      I wouldn't call it a "love" song because it's about a guy obsessed with a celebrity, something that was starting to become serious even in that pre-Internet era (just imagine it today!). Remember that this song was recorded just over a year after John Lennon was killed by a stalker obsessed with him, and shortly afterwards, then recently inaugurated U.S. president Ronald Reagan was nearly killed by another stalker who wanted to draw his idol Jodie Foster's attention by doing something big. These high-profile incidents probably inspired the song to some degree, so it has a dark backstory.
      Anyway, it's a brilliantly crafted song, and I believe it will grow in you with time as "School" did (not that I think that "Bonnie" is a masterpiece as "School" is, it definitely isn't, but it's interesting enough to reveal new and unexpected aspects the more you listen to it). It reminds me a bit of "Rudy" not because of any real similarity (they're completely different songs, of course) but because in both songs Rick made a lush arrangement that has a surprise in store at every turn. The bridge in "Bonnie" is amazing!

      Yea, I guess more of a 1 way "love/obsession" song. Good point about the timing/history. Enjoyed it, but a ST grower is always welcome! Still excited for the rest of this album. Thanks for tuning in!

    Please do once Rosie Has Everything Planned by the relatively unknown second album Indelibly Stamped, a real beautiful song. Their criminally underrated eponymous first album also has great tracks like Maybe I'm a Beggar or one of their longest prog tracks Try Again. If you liked Salisbury by Uriah Heep and Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd, you will love this album. They are all from the same time and stylistically similar.

    One of the better tracks off the album. Thanks a lot for the reaction, been watching your videos for quite a while now (along with those from Genesis) it makes me revisit one of my all-time favourite bands. Hoping you will do "Waiting So Long" and "Don't Leave Me Now" from the same album, in my opinion the two highlights, among my favourite from the band. A French fan.

      @@retroreactions.... You will LOVE those 3, C'est Le Bon is very nostalgic and emotional, Know Who You Are is extremely beautiful, Waiting So Long is a great "British" Argentinian TANGO.
      Don't forget Hodgson solo "Only Because of You" (incredible and underated 8' 37''' song), "Lovers in the Wind" (in my top 5, 80's ballads) and Puppet Dance.

    Grew on me in that unusual ending. Assume Rick Davies wrote it? I think Roger was the one with the genius writing.

      @retroreactions....  Месяц назад

      Yes, the ending a nice payoff for sure! Yes, written by Rick. I have to see if it's in reference to any real person or story. Thanks for stopping by!

    • @goytabr
      @goytabr Месяц назад +1

      It's hard to compare them because they're very different, with nearly polar opposite styles and outlooks. Roger is dreamier, more mystical, sometimes cryptical. Rick is more down-to-earth and noticeably more jazz-influenced. I think Supertramp worked so well for so long (until it didn't anymore) because it was a tao of Roger's yin with Rick's yang. I think both are great, each in his own ways.

    Thank you Brandon, well it was mercifully short compared to many other groups from the 70s, but I guess they learnt to adapt along the way...
    Two things though:
    - The lyrics are incredibly teenagish for a group in its dotage,
    - The piano descent could have been a nice motif but four times in a row is just overkill.
    Cheers from Paris 😅

    A lovely song, but far from Davies' best lovesong. People have said that Famous Last Words suffers from the knowledge of the impending breakup, and each writer was saving their better songs (that they had written to date) for their first post-breakup albums, Brother Where You Bound (for Rick) and In the Eye of the Storm (by Roger). For my taste, Rick's best love song in terms of both musical beauty and lyrics is "Downstream" from Even in the Quietest Moments. Indeed after Crime, EitQM probably contains Rick's best work. "From Now On" is another amazing Rick song from that album.
    .
    I would definitely suggest checking out In the Eye of the Storm, Roger's first post-Supertramp album. There's some great, great music there. I'd suggest starting with either "Had a Dream," which has some proggy elements, or "In Jeopardy" which has a fun, funky beat and thoughty lyrics.

      Hi there! Great info. I read that even the album cover may have been hinting at their split. Ah, Downstream is on my short list. I will add your votes for that and From Now On, as well as the 2 Roger solo songs. So much amazing music to get to, would take multiple lifetimes I think!! Thanks bud

    • @goytabr
      @goytabr Месяц назад +2

      I love both recommendations. I suspect that "Downstream" may have inspired or influenced Christopher Cross' megahit "Sailing" (which I love, too) because it was recorded a bit earlier and the two songs have a lot in common: a dreamy atmosphere, the theme of boating to be with oneself, a rhythmic keyboard setting the mood (piano in "Downstream", synths in "Sailing"). And "From Now On" has one of the most elegant arrangements by Rick ever - and this is saying something! I still remember that song each and every Monday - Brandon will understand why when he gets to it.

    • @sourisvoleur4854
      @sourisvoleur4854 Месяц назад +1

      @@goytabr Interesting the similarities between Downstreasm and Sailing! "Downstream" always reminds me of my first girlfriend because I took her sailing (on a Saturday, but hey). It was just her and me. As romantic as the song.

    Downstream is the chillest of chillsongs dude!
    From Now on is a theatre of two genre collision combustion! 🔥
    Yep I've been inspired by the comments below.
    FLW was an unjustly rejected LP by many Including Myself. So, I'm glad I've heard this. Once again, the blue nile appear to have been inspired by the middle instrumental melody section! First Sylvian & Sakamoto and now this, both from 1982! I'm learning lots from your channel Brandon.
    A question: Do you play tracks for the minority music fan? Say the Blue Nile- ies or Lilac Time-ies? Or is your selection process data driven in a Votey Stylee first past the post likey likey? I'll try "Let's Go Out Tonight" by the former and "In Iverna Gardens" by the latter then!
    Many thanks. I enjoyed acknowledging my misguided 80s prejudice as I listened to this particular track. Maybe I was wrong regarding the LP too. Over the years I've bought the later Supertramp albums and labelled them SessionMuso music, missing the Uniqueness Factor. (see opening Sentence!)
