Thanks so much for watching! Let us know in the comments below if you would sail without modern technology like satellite imagery, chartplotters, radar and depth sounder. :)
The tall ships had some poor sole up in the crows nest 24/7. Still, Cook ran aground along with countless others. They would also sail ahead of the main ship in a small craft to find safe passage and could be away for days and weeks searching.
Thanks for sharing your deservedly cautious approach to sailing in these tricky waters. Clear explanation of the risk management decision making process, not just a glorification of the lifestyle. I also really appreciate your thorough description of wind angles related to sail choice and SOG. Many channels love to boast on a top instantaneous speed, but almost never discuss apparent angle, sail choice and trim or the sea state. Thanks for keeping it a sailing channel with beautiful inspiring moments of the scenery and underwater life. A fine mix! Cheers
Bula 🌝 What a wonderful episode. And we love your sharing so much about giant clams. About 40 years ago after grad school I got to go to remote Islands in Fiji. And I was blessed to visit a few very remote villages with very few visitors. We knew enough to bring kava and the Chief spent a big part of the day with us recounting in Fijian some wild stories about the battles of old days. He even waved around a big giant sword. Our eyes got very wide. But then when he knew he scared us enough, he started laughing. And the laughing continued for the rest of our stay. Fijians are so warm and genuine as you know. Thank you so much for taking us along 🐠
A nice relief from the snow and cold we have here in the UK , thanks for sharing 😃🍻 And all the modern technology is good , as long as you have skills to fall back on when it fails 😃
We're having a blast out here...mostly! 😂 That really means a lot! We definitely put considerable time and energy into the videos so it's nice to hear you enjoy them. 😊
We're here! Thanks for thinking of us! We have been posting bi-weekly but will probably start posting weekly again. Did you see our last video? ruclips.net/video/c-HChJf1EvE/видео.html
Fabio and Kristin. I realize I keep typing OMG 😱, yet this episode……OMG 😳 what an underwater fantasyland of living coral creatures and fish. The giant clam was almost as big as you. LOL. I was afraid you may have been swallowed up, Kristin. The pink fans are my fave. Bummer on the bug bites and it lets me be aware should our voyages send us to that area. 💡 As I listen to you and the philosophy you speak Kristin, I tend to wonder that in some life you were the special guest at schools and gave poetry and prose readings to appreciative audiences. Totally love this part of each episode. You both are such creatives🌞 One other special part of this episode are the 2-3 smiles of pure bliss from Fabio when the sailing was just right…..”I love this boat!” See you next time. ✨🌊💨⛵️⚓️🏝️👙🌞✨
That looked like a fun time. And out of all of your videos, that’s the first I can recall Yoda actually speaking. Impressive! Will you be heading to the Miami Boat Show next month?
When I came back from Vietnam notj my Mother and Father had just sailed from Tonga to somewhere in Fiji. In a letter Dad said " not for the faint a heart" , Mother was more explicit she wrote " if ya balls of brass, ya might try it" . Y'all did many kudos and ❤
Wow! Thank you for sharing your parent’s impressions of sailing in these waters! We tip our hat to those with “brass” who did it, and with humility we admire their courage for doing it without the aid of technology. 😊😊😊💪💪💪
To see your smiles at the end of the episode makes me want to see more!!! As for sailing without technology, there is something romantic about old school navigation and communication, but in reality technology has brought so much safety and efficiency to boating, you cannot dismiss its benefits and I much more appreciate safety and efficiency. We'll leave the romance to the aft berth.
Stunningly beautiful coral, the scientific work of farming the clams to preserve their existence. I did not hear who was responsible for that clam farming. Was it the community or the government? The villagers were heartwarming in their acceptance of foreign visitors, and the welcome ceremonies to the community were something to behold, I bet they were wonderful to be a part of.
Thank you for watching and for commenting! 😊😊 The chief told us that the government is supporting the farming for conservation of the giant clams. They are wonderful people, warm and welcoming. A unique experience 😊😊
Could we imagine trying to navigate the Oceans and Seas without satellite navigation! Is what kept me from doing it in the early 90s. I’m not to old just don’t want to any longer. I couldn’t pull it off. No money. Not smart enough to impatient. 🤷🏻♀️ Love your videos. Thank you
Very good vid. Beautiful scenery. Can I ask a technical question, your main sail drops straight down into your bag, what do you use for mainsail slides? My rutgerson cars in my mast track always get hung up and the sail needs hauling down physically for the last third of its height. I used to have a tides marine track on another yacht I owned and it fell like yours. Anyway thanks for a good show.
Thanks so much for watching and the compliments! We have Harken cars and we apply a lot Mack lube sail coat on the cars and track. If we don’t it starts to get stuck in the way you describe.
Wonderful story! You inspired us and we have a boat being built! Getting it from Tommy and Amy, a Vision 444. We live in FLL. Do you know anyone that would have a dock to rent?
Thank you so much😊😊! Congratulations on your new boat, the vision 444 is a fantastic boat. Unfortunately it’s really difficult to find dockage in FFL, we had friends who let us stay at their dock. They have since sold their home. Check Dockwa?
a good way to protect yourself from sandflies is to cover your exposed skin with oil... olive oil or coconut etc. it stops the pee/spit from the insects making contact, which is what creates the sting etc.
That's so interesting! Thanks for the great tip!! This will be useful when we go down to South Island in NZ. Apparently sand flies can be a big problem.
Thanks so much for watching! Let us know in the comments below if you would sail without modern technology like satellite imagery, chartplotters, radar and depth sounder. :)
No, why not make life sailing easier with modern technology.
Is it really worth the risk not to use it? Personally, I don't see it.
I would use anything that made my journey safer & easier. Good video yall
