  • North Atlantic right whales are on the brink of extinction. With fewer than 340 remaining, every whale is vital to the species’ survival.
IFAW commissioned the research vessel, Song of the Whale, to study North Atlantic right whales during their annual migration along the eastern coast of the United States. Operated by Marine Conservation Research International, Song of the Whale began its research expedition off the coast of Florida in January 2023, sailing north in the following months.
The core expertise of Song of the Whale’s research is bioacoustics - the sounds that marine mammals make. The team has spent years developing acoustic systems for detecting vocalizations of right whales underwater.
