Da Vinci was influenced by Galen. It's hard to understate how our conceptions are shaped by culture. "The Greeks" were the authoritative source of knowledge at the time and questioning them was seen as hubris. It was always going to be difficult to study the vascular system and he invented ways to fill it with wax and pigment and study some veins (but wax is pretty big and so he won't get most of it). His later drawings outline the body quite accurately which is a huge achievement considering he had to conceive of these structures without the benefit of common knowledge. Yeah he didn't understand the dong in the early drawings, but he got closer than anyone else towards the end. His drawings are accurate even if he added in artistic license for their functions based on 'ancient Greek knowledge'
