There's lots of great painting videos here on RUclips, but as far as the actual explanation of what's going on and what you're doing, this one is by far the best. Learned a lot today, thanks!
This is a fantastic series Tony, i v been painting 20 years plus. Was self taught, what i d have given for this back then, but still everydays a learning day . Keep up the great work👍👍
thanks fella and genuinly mate im the same 20 years and self taught and thats my main goal with these videos if i had these back then man id have had half the issues i have had lol, so for me being able to give people this help means alot and i can give them the help we didnt have all those years ago
Súper Tonys excelente tus consejos gracias por compartir siempre!!!!!!!!💯😇
de nada gracias por mirar
Really well explained and demonstrated, finally found a video that explains exactly what I wanted to see, thank you.
Thankyou Darren appreciate that and glad it’s helped mate

Hey buddy welcome to the channel and great to have you with us too mate , and no we’re not a channel for camera tricks or anything like that we like to get everything into a video for our viewers a no jokes barred honest video on how to do the job otherwise what’s the point ? Thanks for watching fella
Great info. Easy to follow. Keep up the good work.
thanks johnathan

Q: "What do you think of turning the pattern knob all the way out?"
A: "I'm a BIG FAN of that."
😂😂😂
Seriously, these vids are great. They show that no matter how good you are technically, there's an artistry to this work too.
Chris Freemesser lol love it mate 😂, and thanks buddy but 100% your right mate on that one at the end of the day what makes you good at this or not is knowledge and keeping to the steps that need to be done the right way wether that’s gun control prep or just the basics of blending the right way all those little things add up to that perfect job
Top watch explained clear and concise thanks for your time and effort. 👏
Is there no basecoat blender needed with waterbase to stop sand piling? I'm not experienced with waterbased.
I’ve not used it once with the lesonal system mate tbh it’s a lot nicer to apply the awkward colours with like coarse metallics ect anyway as it stays liquid for longer solvent you always have the issue that’s it’s drying as it leaves the gun so if say the temp is to high on a hot day or you dust it to dry then there’s issues but at the same time you can cure that with slow reducer and thanks for the kind comments too mate it’s nice to see people are seeing the effort we’ve put into this new series and trying to make it as detailed as we can for you guys watching too
Awesomeness tony mate ... Incredibly detailed and well executed ... If only the world had teachers like yourself . ... Top work buddy ... Top gun . peace mate 👑😊
Thanks fella and I’m sure somewhere out there there’s plenty like me mate
@@TonysRefinishingTV only a rare breed ... A handful in every country unfortunately
great informative video
Thanks
Hello Tony, Any Advice on spraying cellulose metallic paint please... I just can get the Metallic right... Well done on all your videos, your one of the bests on RUclips.... Well done keep it up.
Nice tony👍
thanks gary
Great vid Tony, it's nice to see someone replying to peoples questions, I also sub to a sprayer down under (you may know who I mean), he is very active uploading vids but I hardly ever see him answer any questions, I asked one on there a couple of weeks ago but no reply, it was him that heats his clearcoat on cold days so that was why I tried it.
hey john firstly fella awesome to have you with us mate, and i know who you mean fella, for him its gotta be hard mate all those views and subs means so many questions and comments across so many videos a day it would be a huge task to get back to everyone or even a 1/4 of the questions he gets tbh, myself im pretty strict that i am always present for the first 2 hours a video goes live to answer everything i can at the time , also i put an hour or two aside each day mostly one morning one evening to go through and try to help you guys as at the end of the day this channel and everything for us is nothing without the viewers so for me the help continues after publishing a video wether it be comments , instagram dms or facebook messages on our page il always try my hardest to help, thanks for watching buddy
I think everyone here really appreciates what you do for us diy/shed sprayers, I have to say that the chap down under is an amazing sprayer but you are right its a lot of work replying to all those messages, you seem to reply to all questions plus you have to earn a living. Just watched your 3 part vids on base and clearcoat, I never thought of buying a car wing from eBay plus at that price you cant go wrong, thanks for the tip, got a Toyota one for £25, happy days!! 😎
im sure there will come a day mate for me too when it just gets to overwhelming to answer everyone but il always try my best to answer them all till it becomes to much time in the day but even so i will still set aside that time each day for it to do as many as i can, and yeah mate even we do that ourselves when we get a new clear in or new product to try i have new test panels in the shop i use to try things on or new tools on first so we can get a gauge of how they will perform , its a cheap sensible way to test products and ideal for people to learn with too
Ok thanks for all your help Tony 👍
Great video buddie
thanks fella good to see you here again too man
Great job Tony love this tutorial I was wondering each time you do a episode would it be ok for you to mention temperature you spray hope is not to much to ask thank you for sharing your skills
hey buddy sorry i forgot in this one but in all these beginner videos im spraying with no burners on in the booth so for this video is was no higher than 10c on the day but definitely il add the temp in for you mate in the future
Loving this begginer series. When it comes to light Metalics like blues and golds. Do you just do it with this process ie flicking the wrist to loose it, or do you use a clear base before your last coat so the last coat of regular base lands in the wet base of the clear (not lacquer) hope this makes sense.. see lots of it on American chanels but rarely on UK seems to stop the halo effect on light metallics. Also is their any difference when blending solvent base. Great videos dude
Do you have any videos on blending or fade out smart repair on a 2pack non laquer job I have a classic car im hoping to fade out half way up pillar to avoid painting entire roof can this be done with fact no laquer being used cheers 👍
You make it look so simple. No need to spot prime and no basecoat blender needed. Maybe the water is not so bad. Thanks
We didn’t need to spot prime with this as it hadn’t had filler or broke through to underlying metal , you could pop abit of wet on wet primer over the rub throughs if you wanted but it wouldn’t need it on a job like this in water in solvent I would have wet on wet the repair area to reduce risk of paint reaction. , and water is so much easier and cleaner once you get the hang of it
👍
I have trouble finding the right things for blending area.
I will be very happy if you explain this things simple way.
bay this ,this ... mix with this and you are ready to spray.
living in uk.
Just use your basecoat as it normally is for spraying mixed with thinners 2:1 nothing else is needed with most colours
Hey mate great video, couple of very important questions for you as I will be painting my rear quarter panel bmw code 475. At around 2 minutes when you were sanding you didn’t mention exactly how deep to go ? We’re you just removing the layer of clear coat ? Or some paint also ? 2nd question can this blending method that you have done work with a urethan based black sapphire metallic ? If not urethan than which base would you recommend? God bless you man I’m seriously debating wether I should just pay up the 1000$ or have my friend do it he’s super insistent on doing it as he paints at work says it’s easy but I don’t seem to trust him as this blending and matching is making my head hurt but I will give this a go if I hear from ya mate stay safe cheers
I was told that you needed p600 scratches to really get a good bond with new clear. Is there any advantage to go coarser than p1000?
finally someome using the same soup.
using sikkens autowave.
u didnt Put Effect coats there is that right?
i have issues with some silvers DF and DC mostly
Technically I didn’t put an effect coat no but I blended over the repair area too giving the same thing as an effect coat , with this I find one 70% coat one full wet coat then a drop or effect coat is enough to be done and finished tbh on most colours
Does 1k grit accept basecoat to a degree then Tony?
Hi Tony I've been watching the How To post's with great interest and would to say a big thank you the last time I painted anything was probably before you was born😃😃😃. Now the big question would be would it be OK to ask you about the types of paint to use and if I would be better off using a smaller gun as the compressor is only 8-10 bar but with a small tank. Many thanks Gary. .... isle of Wight
Hi Gary best way for us to have a chat on this would be to message me on our Facebook one so we can go into abit more detail for you mate drop me message on there and then we can chat more
Any tips on silver blends, I did one a few years ago in solvent that looked great up close but 50 yards away it looked like 2 different cars.
Dark round the edge of the blend I’m guessing ? Some silvers it’s best to use a wet bed mate or drop the pressure right off on the blend and drop coat the higher the pressure the more the metallic gets buried into the colour itself rather than laying on the surface so hence a darker appearance
Hi mate.
Great video I've stumbled across.
Is that a normal sarchem tack rag you are using for waterbase? Thanks mate
sure is mate
Very interesting mate. Always thought you have to strictly use water tack rags.
Brillliant, that's exactly what I was looking for. Question if I may good man. If I have used a standard gun (the ones that you suggested iwata blue flash with 1.3 mm set up, 2 ½ turn fluid, full fan), I have touched up with my touch up gun (sealey 0.7mm set up), colours is a great match but on a metallic paint the pattern seems different. So, question is, I'm assuming that at least in metallic, should I use the same gun? will changing guns like normal vs touch up create a different pattern? I mean, people chant see it but I can!
Do you mean you’ve got striping or something fella in the metallic or it’s landed different ?
@@TonysRefinishingTV sorry for delay. It seems it landed differently. Dont know what striping looks like exactly but I can imagine lines running... Def seems more that it landed differently for the little i know man. Thank you
@@TonysRefinishingTV yes, good man, just checked, it def how the paint landed. Def I kept the same pressure but I used a touch up gun rather than my normal one.
Got ya ok , the touch up hun may run different pressure wise to your normal gun mate that could be the issue
why didnt you put primer on the repair ?
Hi, sorry to ask on an old video. What if the clear coat on the repainted wing is different to the factory clear on the door? It'll still look off
How do you mean as in the finish ?
@@TonysRefinishingTV yeah i.e. the final look, tone warmth, as different clearcoats look different. Plus new to old
So putting reducer in your paint blends your paint out better I saw on RUclips that someone said that using a slow reducer is better I never used a reducer before but next time gonna mix reducer and base together with basecoat and clear.
You should really always use reducer / thinner in base mate and yes slow is better
@@TonysRefinishingTV what ratio should you mix reducer with basecoat and clearcoat too and can you mix reducer with primer also.
I can’t tell you that as every paint manufacturer Is different on mix ratios you need to ask your supplier for the tds sheets and give them a read
@@TonysRefinishingTV should I use a primer or a sealer I know have to use a reducer because I just got more primer a black primer to put under dark blue metallic midnight blue metallic paint but am thinking about just using a black sealer and reducer which will use also. Am just painting over spots on my truck and trying to blend them all in now. But later in the year painting the whole truck a different color and then will use a epoxy primer sealer I got the clear and basecoat already. Eventually one day before the next 5 years wanna work for myself auto detailing and painting before I get 50 which am 42 now which am moving from Michigan this year to Texas.

Hi tony, great Chanel. How are you mixing your paint? Do you have a mixing system or do you use a local factor? Reason for asking is if your a small business without a In house mixing system, how would you get perfect basecoat all the time with so many different shades of one code?
hiya mate so although were a small place ourselves were lucky to now have our own mixing sheme with scanner so its not a problem for us , now before this there was only one way to ensure good matches and that was to take a part to our local supplier with the code and have it matched with there chips to the closest shade that would always ensure we had a good or the best match, but it was costly as we would constantly have to send someone out to get a match or wait till the next day for the part and colour to be brought back hence our only option when we got busier was to bite the bullet build a mixing room and get a scheme in which soon we will be doing a video on too
Cheers mate. Keep up the videos, they are brilliant to watch. You, the gunman and paint society are 3 of the best channels in my opinion
172jonno thanks man I appreciate that fella
How much roughly is a paint mixing system in water based mate?
172jonno they can start anything from £600-800 for a smart repair system anything up to £5k+ for a full size one mate depends a lot on your spend a month plus who your supplier is and what system you go for too
Tony always worries me when i see you using tack rag after applying paint/clear coat how much time do you allow after spraying before you wipe the panel down, can understand wiping the mist area quite quickly but the rest ? Frightened incase i wipe down too early
Firstly never use a tack rag after any clear coat stage mate that will end up in tears lol , once the panel has been dried to a dull finish and your happy you can see there is now wet or damp patches then it’s fine to tack cloth mate , you have to think to yourself if it wasn’t dry enough to tack off then it isn’t dry enough to clear either , I ideally tack mine off once the base had matted off under the blower just to make sure it’s clean before I move on to the next stage wether that’s a coat of base or the clearcoat
@@TonysRefinishingTV Thanks Tony nice clear advice as usual
Graham Charlton no problem at all buddy
Great video.
Question when didnt you use blender?
Do you mean fade out thinner or basecoat blender ?
@@TonysRefinishingTV yes. And can reducer be used as a blender for 2k paint t
Which one are you on about in the first question ? Fade out or base blender , and yes but it’s not as effective as a proper fade out thinner
@@TonysRefinishingTV base blender
In waterbase it’s rare you ever need it only day on a very high metallic colour would you use it in our system
Tony where are you based in uk
Nantwich in Cheshire
Good video Tony.It looks like your friends from PMP supplyes want just to sell and forget.I sent mail they didnt answer.
Message them through there Facebook page mate that’s probably best buddy I’m sure they get hundreds of emails a day so may take them a while to see it
Hi Tony, that again is a great informative video, can I ask what would you do about colour match if you painted a bumper cover off the car,I’ve done this and then found the colour was miles out(Ford candy blue),I should imagine colour matching can be a nightmare for you painters lol....Thanks again bud 👍
thanks fella appretitate that mate, ok so bumpers are a pain to say the least being plastic they rarely match anway as the paint for whatever reason lands and looks different on plastic to metal, something to try is to blend the wing edges on the car but even this might no always work and itll still look out , as a shop if we do a bumper off the car and say its the original colour then we try to not paint up to the edges where it meets the body of the car so blend the colour towards it, or if its a full paint we have to hope the match is good enough and also let customers know that if we paint just a bumper off the car with no blends ( say if they dont want to pay for blends on the wings ) then its at there risk on the colour side , we always get the best closest match we can and thats the most we can do
Tony's Refinishing Thanks Tony so it’s a bit of a tricky one then really
Steve Guest yeah mate often bumpers cause the most issues colour match wise
Mate tbh even new cars in showrooms the bumpers look off
Tony's Refinishing Being in the trade as a tech I have noticed that a lot of times bumpers being plastic don’t look the same as the metal painted sections
Steve Guest no mate and often it can be a pain to get right most food well but some man they will make you pull your hair out , sometimes it’s even a case of having to tint a colour to match the car so spray the bumper find it’s wrong then tint it the wqu it needs to be to match up to the car and that’s not fun
Stupid Question time....Is this clearcoat water based
Hi Gary no it’s a common question tbh from beginners, the colour is water based but the clear needs to remain solvent based
