  • Concussions are more common than many realize, affecting over 3.8 million people annually in North America. While concussions are often associated with athletes, they can happen to anyone, whether from a fall, car accident, or even a bump to the head. Despite their frequency, concussions are sometimes overlooked or misunderstood, making it essential to recognize the symptoms early-like headaches, dizziness, and memory problems-to prevent long-term damage.
Early diagnosis is key. Many people delay seeking help, thinking their symptoms will just go away. But a concussion is a brain injury, and untreated, it can lead to chronic issues like memory loss, mood changes, and persistent headaches. Seeking medical attention right away helps doctors monitor your brain’s recovery and prevent further damage.
Unfortunately, there's a stigma around concussions. Some think they’re not serious or that admitting to one is a sign of weakness, especially in sports. Others worry they’ll be judged for “making a big deal” out of it. These misconceptions can stop people from getting the help they need, but understanding that concussions are a real medical issue is the first step to proper care and recovery.

Thanks for this video. Had a severe concussion after a fall were I cracked my skull over thirty years ago. This information would have been good back then. I can identify with many of the symptoms.

Great video Dr. Furlan. Is is quite informative and I look forward to the rest of the videos in the series. I have many questions that I hope are covered in this series of videos. I'm a long time US viewer, who lives with chronic pain, and uses your suggestion in my pain management regime. When I tell my personal physician of any changes I've made to pain management plan, she agrees with them, and on my recommendation has watched at least some of your videos. Thank you!
