*Fun Fact:* Mary Katherine Gallagher was not invented by a team of SNL writers. Molly was performing as Mary Katherine, Sally O’Malley & other original characters long before she was on SNL. I’ve been listening to the audio version of Molly Shannon’s new memoir, “Hello Molly!” (Narrated by her) & I have to say that if you can, *get her book.* Personally I recommend the audio version because I think it’s so much funnier when read by her. It sounds cliche but it’s a very inspiring, uplifting book (despite some truly sad parts) and it made me laugh & cry. *I can’t recommend it enough!* 😉

Molly Shannon plays a precocious teen girl so well. Mary Catherine Gallagher is such a great character. Mary's over-the-top trembling during her monologue is hilarious!
Edit: Just came from Stern's interview. Apparently she had been doing the character for years live before SNL. And she's completely right, it absolutely has to be done live. They didn't "get it" on paper. Her body language and energy are _everything._ And that spontaneous ovation when she stumbles off-stage was completely genuine. One of the best character debuts ever. And still the best one for how she used the metal folding chairs and the real sounds and Gabriel Byrne being the straight-man. Later they had to make the stunts safer and used canned sound effects.

I have an amazing story. One day I was driving home, when all of a sudden the Lord came to me in spirit. I felt very close to Him. I knew if I asked him to play any song on the radio he would, I guess to bless my faith.
So I said "ok, Lord play "Come as you are by Nirvana".
I turned on the radio and the song started playing right there on the spot, perfectly…
I started getting flooded with chills like a waterfall, crying, and trembling.
He stayed with me for 10 minutes in my driveway. until I got outta the car.
A couple months after that I started getting amazing prayers answered way more often, because it helped me quit doubting when I pray and I was lined up with biblical instructions. It's 6 years later and I still get answered prayers in Jesus name.

I remember really liking SuperStar as a kid bc of this character, I only read recently that the movie bombed. I guess it’s just nostalgia.

I worked with someone like this, once. Only they were picking scabs off their face and eating them. Sadly I couldn't deal with it and asked to be moved to a different station

When Mary Katherine Gallagher first appeared on SNL, I became obsessed with watching her. I would tape all her appearances on the show.
I think this one and the West Side Story one with Teri Hatcher were the funniest and most well-developed, and have some of the most hilarious comedic details.

Mary Katherine Gallagher from SNL walked so Tootie from Fairly Odd Parents and Tina Belcher from Bob's Burgers could run.
