    The bit about allocating wounds is fantastic. Also note that the cover saves from terrain rules and many of the terrain properties apply to MODELS, not units. Which means you don't need every model in a unit in the terrain feature utilize a cover save. I've not seen that difference in 9th mentioned much, but its a big one and relates to choosing which models take saves.

    I have played a couple of test games on TTS with Eldar before watching this video and was actually implementing a lot of these tactics in my test games and they work...really really well. Make no mistake, Eldar aren't going anywhere anytime soon. They are a very well rounded army capable of really scoring those secondaries quickly which a lot of other factions will struggle with. And if you play a killy style list, like Crimson Hunter Exarchs, Serpents, Spinners, Spears, etc, you are fast enough and hit hard enough to blast your opponent away in short order and you can focus on picking up those primary points in the last couple of turns. I think you guys touched on all of those point very well here. 9th Edition will be good for the space elves.

      Caludot I’m the same, I’m new and just decided to make Eldar my first army as they are my favorite by far... but maybe something can be made from having a kill focused army that first tries to destroy much of your enemy and blast them off objectives and get your objectives later (and use either Wave Serpents and/or Wraiths to grab some objectives earlier). The nerf to flying makes no sense in the context of what a flying/hovering unit could actually do though... that part does piss me off.

    I must say, I don’t think you mention how much a shooting army threatens the eldar. Firstly, it’s a lot harder to hide out of line of sight, quite a lot harder actually, and an army like astra militarum can just sweep these guys away.
    For that wave serpent example, they’ll have no trouble blowing up a single wave serpent, and then their fragile t3 infantry will be comically easy to clear away.
    It’s a strong strategy, but if your opponent really wants you to stop scoring, they can do so effortlessly.

      They cant really point out stuff like that and critique certain rule changes for a reason :) If you listen to them in their last few videos about 9th they subtly mention that shooting is being buffed. Makes you wonder why even bother playing close combat armies. I can already predict that armis like you mentioned astra militarum and probably tau will be broken at release. With eldar being made of paper and with how - to hit being capped at -1 i think eldar will suffer greatly now since 9th is suppose to be this more shooting edition (you get this feeling like they are trying to paint the 8th ed in a way where CC was really good and shooting needed buffs so 9th will have them which is not the case LOL)

    This is a good video, but I’m still very concerned that my Alaitoc footdar army is completely DoA. Saying our infantry can be “easily shot down” is an understatement. I have a lot of aspect warriors on foot (banshees, swooping hawks, striking scorpions, fire dragons) who are going to be wrecked by the changes to blast and cover, mods to hit, fly, and objective scoring.
    My entire army feels like it is made out of paper. I have no idea how banshees or scorpions in particular are going to kill anything, or survive to score anything, now that tripointing is dead and that MSU is the new meta. A small squad of 5 banshees can’t kill anything. The banshee mask also is nearly useless now with the change to overwatch. I think the days of S3 T3 melee are dead and over.
    I am terrified my entire army is going to be tabled turn one by a hail of bolter fire.

    • @majortriphazard6738

      Agreed, i think combat aspect warriors (or most aspect warriors in general) just aren't worth in 9th unless they get an update. What i have found to be strong however are jetbikes. Grab a lot of shining spears, maybe even a warlock skyrunner conclave with witch strike, and put them all in a windrider host. With the nimble escape stratagem and some clever plays they can be the ultimate hit and run army.

    • @ChefSandwichboy
      @ChefSandwichboy 4 года назад +2

      There's definitely some stuff in the codex that needs to be updated immediately as they've been completely negated by the new rules (looking at you crystal targeting matrix and Deadeye.) As much as I fully acknowledge the cheesiness of the negative hit modifier spam, simply nerfing it to a flat -1 across the board when they quite clearly designed the codex to rely on them and then KEPT ADDING MORE with every subsequent CA update, is pretty stupid without simultaneously releasing relevant balance changes to match. But this is GW we're talking about, why change their formula of "nerf the current meta into the ground so you'll be encouraged to buy the premium priced hot new army with new scuplts" when it seems to work every time?

    • @anunknownlifeform
      @anunknownlifeform 4 года назад +1

      I have an Alaitoc Aspect warhost myself and I am very much in the same boat. However, none of these problems are new to 9th. CC Aspects have been a poor choice for a long time now (my banshees never served as more than something to tie the enemy up for a turn before getting focused down) and my army has been feeling progressively more fragile and vulnerable to attrition as 8th wore on. At the moment I'm looking into keeping the core theme of the army but meching up my infantry into wave serpents and falcons, dropping the weaker aspect units to help pay for it and aiming to play a very objective focused game.

    • @nrais76
      @nrais76 4 года назад

      @@ChefSandwichboy Ah, but the meta at the end of 8th was marines, marines and more marines (sounds familiar), so while I was waiting for a marine nerf when their codex comes out in October....they're getting a buff instead. Wow. I'm not selling my Craftworlds YET, but...
      Also, they have now at least updated Crystal Targeting Matrix. It now makes Heavy Weapons into Assault if you Advance. So I spend all game zipping around in circles to get recon and making sure I get those -1s without having to use the strat, and I still hit like I was used to hitting in 8th. Not the most effective strategy, probably, but I can't properly analyze it until I get new dice. I seriously need to check the balance on these things, they've consistently rolled terriblly.

    I've collected Eldar since the 90s and have largely shelved them for the time being. They just aren't fun to play, their units are largely terrible and don't really 'feel' like Eldar anymore. There are some viable options, jetbike spam for instance can be fairly effective as an example, but overall they're incredibly weak. Undoubtedly part of the cause was the transition from 7th to 8th editions. A strong codex combined with all the detatchment rules meant Eldar were incredibly strong in 7th so they got nerfed very hard and the lack of updated models resulted in them losing a lot of their wargear options simply because GW wanted to avoid including units/options that weren't being sold. GW really failed to account for the loss of initiative as well, as it's a massive nerf for Eldar to go from striking first in most melees to it being charge dependent and/or alternating.
    The biggest issue, for me in particular as they made up the bulk of my army is that the aspect warriors and phoenix lords are just utter trash. I have loads of striking scorpions and honestly I find them to be one of the absolute worst melee units in the game. Harlequins take some time to master but I enjoy them immensely and aspect warriors like scorpions and banshees should feel the same. Powerful, but precious. You really feel the sting of every model lost when playing harlies but at the same time they're each very capable of dealing a lot of damage.
    The psykers aren't all that strong either, often needing psychic powers just to achieve what many other characters confer as a permanent auras around themselves. Warlock's destructor was reduced from a psychic heavy flamer to the worst smite in the game unless you spend a ton of points on a conclave. Mind war lost it potency now that everyone has smite anyway and no Eldritch storm at all. I literally have a large piece of Eldar art on my wall featuring the iconic imagery of a Farseer blasting lightning out of his fingertips. Apparently, they can't even do that anymore.
    Eldar have always been squishy toughness and armour-wise so it's odd that in the current meta GW throw invulns and 'ignore wound' abilities around like biscuits at a tea-party and yet Eldar really lack them. I mean this is a race that literally value individual lives more than any other, a race with vast amounts of technology, able to craft massive constructs with their minds. A race who's sole motivation for just about everything is survival.
    I could go on (and on and on... hehe) but I'll stop myself. Quite simply for the first time in about 20 years or so, that buzz you get when you start your first army because there's 'something' about them which captures your imagination, has been eradicated by just a complete lack of heart or understanding in their miniatures and codex.

    These guys reek of desperation trying to be positive about the eldar going into 9th lol And BTW 1" or 2" of movement is not "fast" or "mobility"...battle focus notwithstanding as most all eldar infantry guns are consistently 6"(or more) shorter in range than other armies so that you have to roll a freaking 6 to even break even, and in the end all this does is get you into CC range so non-melee oriented marines can wipe you out with 3 s4 attacks each. And the heavy weapons bonus? A bonus everyone gets is a bonus to none. All these guys did was put a wig on the latest lip-sticked pig GW has handed to the eldar.

    In good news for eldar players, eldar in many editions were known to be good if and only if the player is good. After a while, average players can copy some internet plays and strategies, and obtain good results with the more straightforward lists (think scatterbikes in 7th) that don't use the wide range of units at the player's disposal.
    This new edition will challenge eldar players again. My personal challenge is to make an aspect heavy list shine despite their inability to withstand a lot of punishment.
    In 2nd, 7th and 8th it worked well. Now let's figure out how to play them in 9th.
    A good backup list is of course a tough eldar army with T5+ units. But somehow that seems less fun to me.

    • @Louis-nh1ei

      Yeah my challenge is how to field fire dragon aspect units that cost more points than Eradicator with half range -2T -2W worse save lol No hate but a CW army rely on broken gimmicks that GW overlooked and it would be good that they properly work on it on the next codex.

    Tactics for Aeldari, Wraithguard with D-Scythe - in Wave Serpents. Wraithblades with Axes - in Wave Serpents. Tough units with viscous damage dealing capacity and inbuilt abilities that stop assault from over powering. Such as Wraithguard with D-Scythes - use overwatch if they are charged. Then in your turn, implacable means they can fallback and shoot and assault with S10 -4 AP weapons which auto hit and shoot D3 shots per weapon. Think about that, A unit charges you. You spend the CP and overwatch automatically hitting up to 15 times at S10 -4 AP. Who would survive that. Worse scenario is 5 auto hits with the same devastating stat's. I usually charge the Wave Serpent up the weakest flank. Dismount next turn and roll the flank up or force the opponent to redirect some of his resources that way which technically gets him in a cross fire.
    If you don't have points for Night Spinner, use Support Weapons with the Shadow Weaver gun. 48" indirect fire and much smaller to hide, 165 points for 3, (Not to mention the D6 shots each gets).
    If you are fighting infantry hordes, think Banshee, bearing in mind you are keeping at least one unit of Wraiths. Vs T3 = 4s to wound at -3 AP. If Vs T4 then 5's to wound at -3 AP, but you have Shuriken Pistols prior to assault to help and two attacks per model. Don't forget they can move up to 29" to assault with no overwatch (If you are lucky, at least 20" movement). 8" move, stratagem to move full 6" advance, 12" assault plus extra 3" because of ability. All with shooting. And an Exarch that adds a buff to subtract 1 from hit rolls by your enemy in combat. I am not sure if that works against unwieldy weapons because they already minus 1 to hit.

    -TS sorcerers need LOS
    -Significant trouble killing tanks, limited options to do so
    -Can't take lots of characters anymore without CP penalty due to changes to supreme command, only viable competitive strategy (MW spam) crippled.
    -Taking magnus means you can't take any cult relics at all from psychic awakening book because warlord has to have keyword for any character to take relic, magnus can't get keyword.

Normally its wear them down in shooting phase but eat as much as you can in combat. that won't help unless i can break the metal boxes in shooting and our bolters don't do that well. can't wait for our points to go up by 30% too haha. I was saving my opinion up until I had actually some games on 9th edition played. I did not play much during 8th Edition but I can assure you, Eldar have viable options to control objectives, tie up enemy artillery, shoot up screens and destroy Vehicles, of course with proper spsyker support. A list that I have been running to local success focuses on keeping a small amount of shining spears with sufficient cover for them not to shoot at them turn 1, provided you're playing with enough terrain. Since they move at 18'', you can easily quicken them for a whopping 36'' movement turn 1 which in most cases will suffice to tangle at least some of their artillery for a turn on top of destroying at least one vehicle on the charge. I actually think the smaller board size works to our advantage. I mostly play 3 wave serpents for obsec, and a dire avenger with 4++ for the background obsec. Inside the wave serpents I mostly play 10 guards on 2 of them and a 3rd with wraithblades and a warlock. This provides the flexibility of making them go through all the wounds a wave serpent with spirit stones and a unit of 10 guardians with the 4++ stratagem provide, whilst also having the ability to go on assault with your wraithblades if they contest an objective too closely. The wave serpents and a vyper all have the flexible loadout of twin and single starcannons respectively, although not as punchy as some other loadouts, it soften up their artillery considerable. Mind you wave serpent fire has not been that impressive compared to other units. I don't think approaching 9th edition like a shootout will work to our strenghts, playing mostly to objectives, and tying up their heavy hitters with assault is the way I recommend playing eldar. Theres always the possibility of getting an Autarch skyrunner with the anti-overwatch trait to avoid getting the bikes get blown by overwatch too.

I play Ulthwe, so they also have a 6+++. Of course, you'll probably have them in units of 10+1, so they can be moved around in Wave Serpents... Since they're fairly high Ld, though, the large blob doesn't really suffer or benefit from the new morale rules, unless your dice are hot or not. Armed with heavy weapons, the ability to move and shoot without penalty will give them some ability for fire support while also bieng able to bring their melee power to bear later, while a wraithlord with shuriken cannons, flamers and a sword could be a nice primary melee threat

      Wraithlords with expert crafters are pretty tasty with star cannons or missiles. Now they're even better

    I'm not sure i agree on mobility. Typically mobility is better when distances are larger. The less room there is, the less mobility matters. So can you explain this a bit more?
    On a more personal note, I used
    to field a craftworld footdar brigade from about 1600 points onwards. I'm sure I don't have more cp than before.

    Great video :D
    The only thing is that this highlights how broken the game is now, from a realism to war sense. New wound allocation and line of sight rules, and that "sacrificial" tactic, are just so far from believable, or from Eldar lore, it hurts my little crystaline matrix :`(

    Nothing about Wraithblades or Wraithguard? That T6, 3W profile looks good on paper as an anvil unit, did it just not pan out?

      there over costed compared to other units. wraithguard is 10 PL compared to the 4 or 5 PL of the melta marines.

    You missed one new big shot. You can spend CP to put troops into reserve. Thats great, because your biggest weakness of shuriken catapults is its range.
    Now you can let your weak guardsmen and dire avengers come into the game from the sides of the table 9 inches away from enemies. Thats great because it is still in 12 inches range and you won't need transports to actualy use your troops. It is a very cheap way to kill specialits units like devastators, elites and stuff like that. Also if you also have your fire prism at the board, the oponnent probably won't attack your guardsmen anyway with his tanks. So you can clean off alot infanterie and your opponent will probably not handle yours. This could be used to set your opponent under pressure alot.
    The downside is, everbody can do so. That may result in a "you go firs, no you go first" dueling, where players hesitate to reinforce their army. This might make the game in general stuttery.
    Unfortunately with the new overwatch rule, flamethrowers will not be that great anymore.
    Another question, why didn't you mention Vypers? They were already one of the best units of all in 8th. and with 9th they will become even better. Unfortunately Landspeeders will also become much better than vypers, but with alaitoc -1 to hit the vypers are a very durable.
    What realy sucks, with new the focus on melee and the new space marine primaris assault marines, melee seems realy unbalanced. The benefit of shining spears were its speed, more wounds, armor of 3 and inv of 4. Their weapons are great against infantrie but bad against vehicles. Now other factions are also very fast, can also easily charge, they have the same amount of wounds or even more and they have better weapons aswell. Also SM new assault marines have much more attacks and get even more with shock assault, while shining spears have way to less attacks.
    I don't know why GW hates shining spears, they don't even produce them anymore. This video is again an example, that almost everyone needs to kitbash their shining spears on their own. It is not just, that shining spears don't have new models. They don't even sell the old ones anymore. There are out of stock for years now. I NEVER saw them on stock. I was never able to actually buy them from GW directly. And on ebay they are sometimes redicously expensive. So i guess GW abanded them.

      Depending on points wraiths seem to be the only playable units that’ll be survivable
