It is kinda weird how little Rod and Todd are in the show despite living next to the Simpson's and Ned being such a major character. Dead Putting Society is probably the most either of them are in an episode and that is like in the first 20 episodes. Also with Lemon of Troy and Skinner's Sense of Snow it really feels like they were involved just so Ned can come get them later in the episode with Homer.

It was always clear who was Rod and who was Todd, based off of appearances. Also, it could just be me, but it felt like Flanders (especially Rod & Todd) got weirder and weirder after Maude's death. Like some of Ned's most exaggerated "nagging Christian man" scenes were in later seasons, as well as Rod & Todd appearing more and more sheltered & out of touch with the real world. Perhaps that's just me. Also, Simpsons Histories on Inanimate Carbon Rod when???
They did get kind of weird in the later seasons. Like playing games where they freeze in place for a long time or playing with pretend presents. It's hard to tell since they were always kind of weird, but they did seem a little more space-y in the later years.
I guess it's that before Maude died they were largely a well knit family that Homer envied, those weak spots existed here and there but a wife/mother to unite them all prevented that vulnerability showing too often besides minor comic relief, while as mentioned in the video, we get more moments of proper limelight with the boys and Marge or Edna trying to bond with them after that tragedy, so those quirks work as a conflict to that.
There is an episode where I think Ned is watching tv shows and marking down if there is anything offensive. Rod and Todd walk in and look concerned. One of them comments along the lines of "we think you need a new mommy."
The beauty of earlier Simpsons is that none, literally none, of these continuity issues mattered. It was only as the show dragged on with the characters not aging but the continuity clearly changing that any of these issues emerged. Basically when the show become worse I started getting hung up on details. It's weird to me when you compare things that happened in season 29 with something like Bart Sells His Soul as they're practically different shows.
57 Year Old James Bond you’re thinking of the baby shower for Maggie, which was only 2 years before she moved there. My guess is she’s some kind of time traveler
I remember an episode where marge met up with ruth and she was a bodybuilder who was in prison. I guess she got arrested for the high speed chase she was in.
Don't forget, this is the episode where a photo of Maggie is on the wall before Maggie is even born... Ruth Powers must be time travelling with Maggie hahaha 🤣
I always thought Rod was about 12 just because he's pretty lanky, like he's on the cusp of an adolescent growth spurt, but it's hard to tell their ages because they both ACT younger than Bart and Lisa.
No mention on how ‘Rock Bottom’ had to make the correction “The older Flanders boy is Todd, not Rod”? I think the real mystery is why ‘Rock Bottom’ was reporting on the Flanders in the first place. Either way, something doesn’t line up if you’re now saying Rod is the elder, I mean all the rest of the ‘Rock Bottom’ corrections were accurate: Styrofoam isn’t made from kittens, salt water doesn’t chase the thirsties away, and I did slow it down to read them all so yes I do not have a life.
You're giving us a lot of credit knowing the differences between those characters. I still need to write on my hand Lenny = White and Carl = Black to tell the difference.
Something to note about Rod being introverted is in season 5 episode Homer Loves Flanders, when the Flanders and the Simpsons go on their trip and Homer plays his rap tape, Rod is sat in the boat by himself while everyone else is in the car
It could also be that the game is very vanilla and boring as it was based off of Mystery Date, which was an actual board game by Milton Bradley in the 1960s. I like to think Josh Weinstein also took a jab at Mystery Date with Bart's boredom at playing the game the family is playing while Lisa gets to go off and have fun, saying that Mystery Date was "a very disappointing game to play as a little boy"
It's a fair point to make, I have to look up which one is Rod and which one is Todd. They ARE very similar in personality, and I think the show tends to emphasize how sheltered they are due to how Ned (and Maude before she died) raised them than creating any distinguishing characteristics between them, other than that one of them is technically older than the other.
I can't help but notice in earlier seasons they were more pale than a lot of other characters. They were literally sheltered, in that they must have stayed inside way more than everyone else.
Rod and Todd are, in my opinion, a representation of kids who have overprotective parents and how their parent's overprotectiveness has an impact on the way their child grows up. Like literally in every episode the Flanders appear Rod and Todd experience relentless sheltering by their parents from nearly everything that doesn't connect to religion or any other pious things that their family enjoys. As a result, they have strange personalities.
Love your videos but one thing I want to point out. Early on the Flanders family seemed to represent the "grass is greener" on the otherside. Rather than be a cautionary tale (which is what it evolved too) we always see Flanders having a great successful life. The leftorium episode breaks away from this, but as we see in earlier episodes Homer is quite jealous of Flander's success with everything. Only really after the death of Maude do we see Rod and Todd get much more sheltered...possibly because of Ned's overprotection?
These characters are definitely odd. Despite appearing quite often, I feel there isn't much in them. They feel like empty characters at times, although they're not unlikable or anything. Btw, I do like the Mario and Luigi comparison. My favorite gaming franchise and one of my favorite cartoons in one video!
I know they're basically disappeared from the show over the past few years, but I'd like to see one done for Nelson's bully friends. Not Jimbo, Dolph, and Kearney, the much shorter guys who were really just background characters (not sure they even have names). They were part of the plot in Bart the General, I believe, when Bart was fighting against Nelson's continued bullying.
I wish the later seasons of Simpsons did what the later seasons of Arthur did and explore side characters, their personalities, families, traits and thought just as much, if not more than the main character. I would love to see episodes exploring Rod and Todd's character. The fact that Todd actually does something really cool and brave in that Season 17 episode really makes me want to watch it now.
The reason I think I always remembered (or more accurately guessed correctly) was that a rod is something that is tall and thin, and if also inanimate and made of carbon, a true American hero
i used to have two cousins that were like rod & tod, one tall, one short both extremely sheltered no matter how i tried they would avoid me like the plague
I could be wrong, but I seem to remember Bart getting paired with Todd for storylines more often than Rod. I always figured Bart and Todd to be the same age, and Rod maybe 2 years older.
2:19 it was alway hilarious to me that the hyper- religious Rodd &Todd Flanders, when standing side by side in their football uniforms spell out 66-6. Back when the Simpsons had gags all over in every episode.
The weird thing with the Flanderses, is that even though they're obviously Biblical literalist fundamentalist Christians, they're not really hateful. You only get an occasional slight hints of bigotry and they're intolerance is portrayed more like neuorsis.
6:12 pastor at church when I was a kid had two sons. Just like Rod and Todd. Older one was quieter and easier going, younger one still a good kid but more prone to being the center of attention or getting in trouble. Parents when they have their first kid, they spend all their attention on them. The kid can learn to be calm and listen. Second kid, parents are worn out by that point and the kid has to fight for attention from birth.
You just reminded me of why I checked out during season 17, that is one of the GOOD episodes! I had these two completely backwards, so thanks for this well researched video.
Todd is the more developed character and has had several episodes in which he is a main character, mainly because he is about the same age of Bart and Lisa ans thus can interact with them outside his family. Rodd is only really around when the Flanders have a group scene, so he doesn't get as much of a chance for the writers to focus on him, thus he is less developed. Really it's just that the Flanders have one too many members for the purposes of the writers of the show (hell even Maude was deemed disposable enough to kill off), so Rodd feels like a superfluous third nipple.
My brother always used to work on the basis that Rodd was 12 and that the audience's assocation of Rodd with Bart and Todd with Lisa had just pushed people to read them as 10 and 8 incorrectly. At the time when we started rewatching the Simpsons with our little brother (about 10 years after we'd watched them originally) this claim that 'Rodd was accidentally called Todd in the first episode' was going around and it used to make him so annoyed. He actually trawled through all their early series appearances looking for confirmation that Todd was 10 and that the child in S1E1 was the shorter Flanders brother. It's neat to see we were not the only ones since I think our rewatch would have been about the time this video came out.
If I am talking about sibling's I almost always list them oldest to youngest, for example: Bart, Lisa, Maggie. Always done this with cousins, friends, characters.
A recent episode had Todd briefly stop believing in God after he becomes depressed because he can no longer remember what his mother looks like.
That's actually believable and sad.

There is an episode where I think Ned is watching tv shows and marking down if there is anything offensive. Rod and Todd walk in and look concerned. One of them comments along the lines of "we think you need a new mommy."
@@robertholston4708 that was one of the episodes I had in mind when I thought of my theory
Season 14 was the last good season.
I’d love a simpsons histories/ mystery on what happened to Ruth Powers
And how did she attend Marge's surprise baby shower years before moving to Springfield?
57 Year Old James Bond you’re thinking of the baby shower for Maggie, which was only 2 years before she moved there. My guess is she’s some kind of time traveler
Oops, my mind was elsewhere.
And Ted Koppel _is_ a robot!
You're giving us a lot of credit knowing the differences between those characters. I still need to write on my hand Lenny = White and Carl = Black to tell the difference.
THEY ARE AS OLD AS THEIR FATHER SAYS THEY ARE
Something to note about Rod being introverted is in season 5 episode Homer Loves Flanders, when the Flanders and the Simpsons go on their trip and Homer plays his rap tape, Rod is sat in the boat by himself while everyone else is in the car
The biggest mystery is why they had that game about dating boys in Summer of 4 Ft. 2.
it could have belonged to Maude, something that she kept from when she was a child/teenager.
They could of brought it with them.
Because they got the Dud.
@@Super_Mario128 suggesting Maude may have grown up in the 1960s?🤔🤔🤔
It's a fair point to make, I have to look up which one is Rod and which one is Todd. They ARE very similar in personality, and I think the show tends to emphasize how sheltered they are due to how Ned (and Maude before she died) raised them than creating any distinguishing characteristics between them, other than that one of them is technically older than the other.
Daddy says dice are wicked
Fat Pie Moth Moth!!!
I like how in one of the episodes in the recent seasons have Todd the main focus with him finally dealing with the passing of his mother.
“Some people prefer Luigi over Mario”
Me, an intellectual: WALUIGI TIME
I always assumed that the older brother got top billing, so I understood Rod to be the taller one.
Tall like a Rod, Tiny Tod was my way of remembering. Glad to see this is a shared device.
the way i remembered it was todd for toddler as hes younger
Love your videos but one thing I want to point out.
Early on the Flanders family seemed to represent the "grass is greener" on the otherside. Rather than be a cautionary tale (which is what it evolved too) we always see Flanders having a great successful life. The leftorium episode breaks away from this, but as we see in earlier episodes Homer is quite jealous of Flander's success with everything.
Only really after the death of Maude do we see Rod and Todd get much more sheltered...possibly because of Ned's overprotection?
Can't wait for the mystery of Sneed's Seed and Feed (formerly Chuck's)
Chuck's Seed and Feed just doesn't have the same ring as
Oh......
Now I’m a Rod fan. I always cheer for the Luigi of a pair. Cause they deserve more attention than they get.
2:35 Wow, that 'possible bad influences' joke with 'Grandma' crossed off is preety dark for the Simpsons
These characters are definitely odd. Despite appearing quite often, I feel there isn't much in them. They feel like empty characters at times, although they're not unlikable or anything. Btw, I do like the Mario and Luigi comparison. My favorite gaming franchise and one of my favorite cartoons in one video!
Lol their football uniforms are 66 , 6
I’ve never figured out the difference between Patty and Selma 😢 0:25
That was Rod and not Todd
2:18 rod and Todd’s numbers make 666 interesting Easter egg
Simpsons mystery on Lenny and Carl? You know what I'm talking about...
Lenny is in his early fortie-
Oh wait
The reason I think I always remembered (or more accurately guessed correctly) was that a rod is something that is tall and thin, and if also inanimate and made of carbon, a true American hero
I actually would love if the series ended with Lisa and Todd ending up together. Homer and Ned would be family lol
Omg same
Homer would probably have a heart attack if that happened
i used to have two cousins that were like rod & tod, one tall, one short both extremely sheltered no matter how i tried they would avoid me like the plague
I missed Simpsons Mysteries. I didn't think there were any mysteries left. Maybe we can still find out how old Mr Burns is.
Rod: "Lets play Who can sit still longest!"
Todd: "Arms Folded!"
Tall Todd....Tiny Todd? Thanks, you just ruined any chance I had of keeping this straight by telling me both of those.
"Rod, Todd, this is God"
*gasp* How did _you_ get on the radio?
No matter how much I learned about Rod and Tod as individuals from each other today, I am sure I'll forget it next week
Todd was in Lemon of troy because they needed to have Ned looking for him so all the parents could use his motor-home lol
6:57 ... well to be fair, I don't think Ned would be very happy with Todd being romantic with such a strict atheist either
Lisa is not an atheist 😂😂😂 she is a non practicing christian, protestant as of her mother's upbringing and currently in Buddhism
i actually got it right because "rod" made me thing of tall, long things, so uh...
...yeah
6:12 pastor at church when I was a kid had two sons. Just like Rod and Todd. Older one was quieter and easier going, younger one still a good kid but more prone to being the center of attention or getting in trouble. Parents when they have their first kid, they spend all their attention on them. The kid can learn to be calm and listen. Second kid, parents are worn out by that point and the kid has to fight for attention from birth.
For me Rod: Mrs Simpson made me gay.
Todd: I don't want to eat my damn vegetables
Well, according to Manger Things, Todd was born after Lisa, The Simpsons managed to mess up the continuity again
Lenny next please
Oh no, not Lenny! Not *_LENNY_*
Kids, turn off the TV, I have some bad news about Lenny!
Ow! My eye!
A little late for Lenny.
Extra extra! Todd smells
We already knew that
I don't know if this should be an extra, Mac Monkeyhat.
Is your source on this reliable?
I don't think it was Todd who first went with Ned to welcome the Simpsons. I always assumed it was Rod and the clothes were hand-me-downs.
Rod, Todd, who's who? All I have for you is a shrug.
If I am talking about sibling's I almost always list them oldest to youngest, for example: Bart, Lisa, Maggie. Always done this with cousins, friends, characters.
Lol, all these years and I still remember that Rod is the diabetic one.
In "I love Lisa" there is a kid in the cafeteria who looks like Rodd sitting at the table when Bart does the "baboon heart" prank.
Everybody remembers a Rod and Tod or Sherri and Terri from school.
I knew a Wendell, Martin, and Database.
I was Martin. My friends were Wendell and Database
i got an ad on the fake "the end" screen so i genuinely thought it was over 😭
