I think Bart and Skinner would be a good relationship to explore. They obviously have a rivalry but it is clear they both have some respect for each other, as shown in episodes like “Sweet Seymour Skinner’s Badass Song” and “Grade School Confidential”.
It would also be worth mentioning how Skinner acts as a sort of second father figure in bringing out a more mature side in Bart sometimes, while Bart sometimes brings out the rebellious side in Skinner he once had that he longs for.
I agree, there's an appreciation from an adult perspective that Skinner doesn't "hate" Bart, that being a good teacher (or parent) often involves being strict.
If they were neighbors they would probably get along, Bart struggles to conform to the system. While, Principle Skinner being a Vietnam War veteran himself, was betrayed by it when sent off to war. If Skinner wasn't his principle, they could find ways to relate to eachother.
@@randomguyontheinternet7940 In the infamous episode where Skinner is not Skinner but Armin Tamzarian, the audience finds out that he was a rebel before joining the military. Perhaps he understands Bart to some degree.
People always talk about "Flanderisation" and how that "killed his character" and all that, yet to me Ned will always be one of my favourite characters. While he may have been run pretty ragged with ideas over the seasons, I will still always find a simple joy in his diddly-dang-doodly speech patterns and overall good nature. No relationship in other entertainment media can quite capture the dynamic Homer and Ned have, even if it isn't the first or last of its kind.
The weird thing is that Flanders probably isn't the best example of Flanderization on the show these days. He did get exaggerated quite a bit in the middle teen seasons, but they course corrected and he mostly feels like the same as the early seasons
@@nickrustyson8124 That went back and forth. I hate when they turned him from consensual ladies' man to straight up rapist (Peter's exact words to Quagmire at the end of a Cleveland Show episode). You’re bang on about the brotherly aspect, especially in the context of the show’s age. When the show was younger, Homer and Ned fought and got into trouble half the time they interacted, but now in its 20s and 30s, they’re a lot more kind and generous to each other. That metaphor really hits home.
I wonder what new possibilities could be had with them if the show finally adds a permanent resident to 740 Evergreen Terrance that doesn't disappear into the void after an episode and have a new character or an existing character that can act as a foil to both of them to spice things up every once in a while. Maybe someone who can both play the mediator and the instigator between them according to his mood of the day. There's only so many ways you could do the Homer vs Flanders formula in a show that's been around so long that you can measure years with it before writers start retreading familiar plots again. Maybe that's just me.
I see Homer and Flanders as Bart and Nelson. They fight, they sometimes dislike eachother, they sometimes are wholesome to eachother and sometimes are inseparable. If you asked Bart and Homer who their best friend was, they wouldn't say Ned nor Nelson. But from what we've seen, they do keep them in high regards.
Bart and Nelson is quite fascinating to me. To see how their relationship develops from one extreme to the other over the series, in a gradual and subtle way.
But Bart's best friend is Millhouse. Bart and Nelson don't have issues in saying they are friends anymore. Bart is more embarrassed to say he's Millhouse's friend, if you think about it.
When I was a kid, the part that made me laugh the most was during hurricane neddy when Ned goes crazy and is like "ah he'll diddily ding dong crap!" Lol
I always liked the line in "Homer Loves Flanders" where Homer goes "and this time, you can be the Nacho Man!" You know this relationship is going to deteriorate in a matter of seconds but for the moment, it's a cute sign of his affection for Ned.
I like to call this kind of friendship "Begrudging friends", it's usually when although one party (Or neither party) will admit it, you can still tell they're friends. Homer and Flanders is kind of like the reverse SpongeBob and Squidward, with the happy-go-lucky neighbor being our main character and the grumpy relatable lead being the neighbor. Homer (And Squidward) may not admit it often, but they do like their neighbor on some level. Now if only I could find more friendships like Quark and Odo, that would be great.
It’s a cartoon; over the top drama comes with the territory. That’s like saying Homer genuinely wants to kill Bart when he’s strangling him or that Squidward is genuinely trying to kill SpongeBob. Over the top wacky antics come with the territory in a cartoon.
This got me wondering...does Flanders have other friends? The closest thing I can think of is Reverend Lovejoy, and he arguably hates Ned more than Homer. Is that why Ned is always so quick to call Homer his best friend despite their extremely dysfunctional relationship?
I think from my memories that Flanders has a lot of friendly acquaintances and is generally respected but doesn't have many people he's intimate with (not in the sexual way, we've seen the wall of dead wives). Homer's one of the few people alongside bart he seems to engage with emotionally.
The level of complexity to Homer and Flanders relationship is one of the most defining aspects of the show. That for all the problems they have for each, very deep down they're friends.
It might be worth doing a character dive video into the Term "Flanderization" and a look at all the characters in the show that have been impacted by this term.
I think a reason Homer might be willing to help Flanders when he asks for it is that Homer views Flanders asking for help is an admission that he isn't better, but rather that Homer is better in some way. If one of Homer's biggest issues with Flanders is how he makes Homer feel inferior by comparison, then showing weakness by asking for help is a good way to get past that, at least for a time.

I think the fact that homer has a huge rock with Flanders name on it, in case of a rock fight and was ready to use it but stopped when Ned just wanted to talk, shows a lot about their relationship.
I know Flanders is a "good Christian" and everything but if someone's actions led to the death of a loved one of mine...I would never be able to forgive that person let alone live next to them.
I think from Ned's perspective, he understands ultimately that it was an accident. I think Ned defintely knows that Homer isn't terribly fond of him for various reasons, jealously is the most prevalent reason, and for as much of a jerk and an ass Homer can be towards him and his family, it was clearly accidental, and I guess for Ned that's all he needs to forgive Homer.
I mean, that was also just simply down to coincidence. Even though that was a shit thing to do, Homer didn't know that, there would of needed to be a hospital crew. Also the stadium would be liable for having open back crowd stands. Yet, Ned doesn't bring up such thing. He's such a good guy he won't sue a stadium for being unsafe for spectators. You perfectly summed it up. They are brothers who may not like each other every day. But at the core, beyond anything they say or do to each other, they love each other and want to help them out when needed.
Boy Scouts in the Hood is my favorite Homer/Ned interaction ever. "See boy, your old man was right, not Flanders! We ARE doomed!" He'd rather show up Flanders and die rather than be wrong and live 😂😂
Very good job on this project! I love The brothers concept. I see them as lot like Brothers too. They truly do bounce off each other well and make the stories very entertaining. I think doing a video on Lenny and Carl would be fantastic too! When you have time.
It's kinda broad, but tracks because they're all setting-specific characters, but a group Simpsons History episode on the characters that compromise the Springfield Court/Legal System would be fascinating
Flanders is the Yin to Homer's Yang Almost the opposite is every respect but you can't see one without the other Homer may have deep resentment and jealousy to his neighbor but he ultimately does like him Much like Spongebob and Squidward or Phineas and Ferb with Candace, it may be one sided in some cases but they tolerate each other from a place of love and respect
I recall reading that the entire joke behind Flanders as the Simpsons' next-door neighbor is that he's meant to be a subversion of the whole "wacky neighbor" trope; Flanders was, in general, a nice and friendly guy, and Homer hates him despite not having much of a reason to hate him. Of course, this got fleshed out significantly as The Simpsons, as a series, went on, and started to explore just how much of a "nice guy" Flanders really is, and just how patient he can be with a neighbor as obnoxious as Homer.

This is an interesting sub series idea, it also lets you look into dynamics of the main characters who would likely be far too convoluted to track through in a single Simpsons Histories video.
I know that the status quo states otherwise but I think that after all these years the relationships between the characters has changed, technically Barney should be Homer's best friend, bu it's clear that Homer hangs out with Ned way more than he does with barney or even Lenny, Carl or Moe in One episode we find out that Carl didn't even consider the guys his friends, and if we look into It they're relationship Is pretty shallow, in most episodes the guys immediately turn on Homer when the town has had enough of the Simpsons, the only person who stays on Homer's side Is Ned, so I feel comfortable saying that Homer and Ned are indeed best friends, an unusal and mismatched friendship but a really close friendship
Another great Simpsons video! I laughed, I cried, I wrote “Screw Flanders” over and over until I met the 1500 word count on my restaurant review for my local newspaper. Seriously, I understand why Homer laughed at that heartfelt letter Flanders wrote- it had the word, “bosom” and we know what happens when Homer hears the word “titmouse” (he giggles like a schoolgirl). Anyway, I love these! ❤ please make more 💜

This is a really amazing video, and I would love to see more of these relationship type videos even though the ones you listed might be the only ones you can get super detailed in. Homer and Ned’s relationship is one of the more fun combinations in the show, because they are perfect foils for eachother. Moe gets along with homer, milhouse and Bart are usually on the same page other than the climax, and the main family always ends on good terms. Ned and homer episodes are always different and it’s fun to see which version of their friendship will happen that episode.
I would really love to see you take a look at each of the writers for the Simpsons and talk about the episodes they wrote and what they brought to the series.
I will say one thing, I think the part in Hurricane Neddy where Ned snaps has some pretty great jokes and callouts for characters, but the ones he has for Marge and Bart are genuinely mean. He basically throws Marge and her family under the bus and when Bart justifiably tells him to back off Ned relentlessly mocks him and predicts he'll be homeless when he grows up. That's so raw it would make Gordon Ramsay faint. It's worse cause, in most of the future episodes, Bart doesn't have it so well...
I love how Flanders is such a good person that it’s impossible to see anything he does as negative unless you completely separate yourself from any virtue and look at him from a purely secular standpoint and even then it’s a stretch. The perfect foil to Homer

I like Homer's term for Flanders in the episode with the aforementioned strawberry scene, his "worst friend".
The worst thing he’s done to Ned is salting the earth after getting rid of his plants.
I have a suggestion. Can you do a Simpsons Histories for Milhouse's crush on Lisa. I'd be curious to know where it started.
The music in your videos is always so good!
The ending song is my fave song from the final fantasy series.
Very good job on this project! I love The brothers concept. I see them as lot like Brothers too. They truly do bounce off each other well and make the stories very entertaining. I think doing a video on Lenny and Carl would be fantastic too! When you have time.
I like how in the future episode where are Lisa goes to college it is revealed that Ned is Homer's AA sponsor and helps him quit drinking for Marge
It's kinda broad, but tracks because they're all setting-specific characters, but a group Simpsons History episode on the characters that compromise the Springfield Court/Legal System would be fascinating
It's funny because Homer's Status Quo best friend is Barney but I'm not sure they've really shared a bond that didn't involve alcohol.
Yes, there's a few realtionships like that in Simpsons.
Simpsons Shiptories: Homer Loves Flanders
Stupid sexy Flanders!
"Not even the good book can help me now."
"Why not?"
"I sold it to you for seven cents."
"Oh..."
Really loved this style of video. I know you touched on it in a video before, but maybe if there is more to it, Nelson and Martin.
If homer drinks 12 beers at Moe's at $5/beer 3 times a week that's $180/week or nearly $10000/year. easily enough to afford all of Flanders perks
Stew peed a merry cans, right 😉
I'm paraphrasing here: "If everybody were like Ned Flanders we wouldn't need a Heaven because we would already be there". Brings a tear into my eye.
Flanders is the Yin to Homer's Yang
Almost the opposite is every respect but you can't see one without the other
Homer may have deep resentment and jealousy to his neighbor but he ultimately does like him
Much like Spongebob and Squidward or Phineas and Ferb with Candace, it may be one sided in some cases but they tolerate each other from a place of love and respect
“Marge, I think I hate Ted Koppel. No wait I find him informative and witty”
OMG thank you so much! I never watched the bounty hunter episode before

Thanks! I was a little nervous about this video (because it's a new format) so am glad to hear that it came off well 👍
What a genuinely great video. Ty for trying out different types of content, this was a pleasent surprise. :)
Another beautiful video from TheRealJims!
❤ please make more 💜
They both work so well together. They gave us so many great moments.
i wasn't expecting that summary at the end of them being like brothers, and if you had told me at the start that's what you were going to end up saying, i don't think i would've believed it!! but wow that's such an insightful and perfect summary of their relationship.
This was fantastic! Would love to see more relationship studies like this! (Also, as someone who loves both Simpsons and FF, the music always gives it an extra punch. That version of Coin Song at the end? *Carl Carlson Chef Kiss*)
I've said it before, but I think there's no better time than now, what IS Homer and Skinner's relationship? They started as strangers, then friends, and now its very ???, but is there more to this?
My headcanon is that Skinner envies Homer's interesting life and really wants to be friends with him, but Homer couldn't care less about him.
@@matti.8465 They're like the odd couple
@@fixedfunshow Homer's the messy one, and Skinner...
@@lanceuppercut_ Shut up you
@@fixedfunshow Oh, yes. Very well.
I love the idea of Homer and Flanders being brothers. Saying it out loud, it just makes so much sense.
7:28 I get it because, like its enjoyable because you know his ideal is to not get upset, but we're all human, and people break eventually, do things that go against their ideals when push comes to shove.
Barney is Homer's best friend, even if the Jean era completely ignores that.
The Coin Song seems an appropriate choice for the outro!
Right!? It’s my fave FF so g
Wasn't it the Stamp Museum/Cemetery episode where Flanders gives him a cup of coffee on the cold morning and Homer mumbles "Stupid best friend Flanders!"
I've always enjoyed the Homer/Ned dynamic and have long considered Ned to be Homer's best friend. Great video!
Im glad you are posting more regularly.
Why do they keep drawing Flanders with the typical Simpsons beer belly when we all know he's ripped under that sweater
I disagree on “town crier” Homer wanted that before knowing Flanders had it
Oh yeah, you're right. That was more of a general rudeness example
@@TheRealJims still great analysis either way. Always love your content over here in London (UK)
A great analysis as always
17:45 To quote Brothe Love (WWF/E), "Just because I Love you, doesn't mean I like you!"
Always a pleasure to watch your videos!
15:57, love that Coin Song from Final Fantasy VI.
8:30 Can someone name me what episode this is? Where Flanders forgives Homer, I wanna watch that :0
It's "Sex, Pies, and Idiot Scrapes", the first episode of season 20
@@scrooge200 Thanks neighborino :D
Another banger video as always
OMG THE COIN SONG FROM FINAL FANTASY VI!?! It’s my fave FF song of all time!!! Sooo awesome! And it fits with the brother theme!
Looking at that memoriam, Ned sure was a homewrecker in his older years. XD
Loved this video, keep up the great work jims :)
Good call on the Coin of Fate theme!!
I just responded with the same thing! It’s my fave FF song and it totally fits!
I love how Flanders is such a good person that it’s impossible to see anything he does as negative unless you completely separate yourself from any virtue and look at him from a purely secular standpoint and even then it’s a stretch. The perfect foil to Homer
I haven’t watched the sinpsons in like 15 years, but watching your vids makes me wish i had, great content man
