Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to produce and post this video. I really enjoyed it.
You totally saved my day man, thanks, never seen anyone explain it with such detail. awesome, thanks a lot for the very geeky explanation, loved that.
Eric, you really have THE BEST video tutorials for mixing on RUclips. I love how you don't just approach it as "i've found a bass sound that's cool, lets play with that" and you share more of the science behind finding a great sound that actually WORKS in a mix. This video has really helped in my understanding of not only mixing the bass guitar, but how to use my plugins like I never knew. Thanks so much!
Man, your videos are amazing. Seriously, very helpful. Just wait and you will get lots of viewers and subscribers.
Not dissing Pro Audio Files, but I subscribed to the Pro Audio Files because of your presentation. I'm sure the others are ample, but your presentations are the best. Subscribing now.
so clear and helpful, keep doing this stuffs, it's great to have someone who show you how to do things the right way
Thanks for your feedback! I am glad to hear you found it helpful. Keep rocking out!
Thank you so much for this and your other videos, i hope you don't mind but i want to download this so i can watch it over again when i am on the road. the info you pack into these videos is amazing.
i watched the drum one and was instantly memorized at all the stuff i learned .
once again thank you so much Eric.
kind regards ..Tony
Thanks for checking out the video. I'm glad it was helpful. Keep rocking out!
These are what i call tutorials !! great stuff Eric !
Great tutorial! Just what I've been searching for.
Many thanks for sharing the knowledge!
Cheers, and keep up the good work!
I love Eric's videos
Thanks!
This is an amazing masterclass. It'll take time to test but it's been really educative and extremely well explained. Besides, the tune is great. Thank you!!
That is a good idea. In theory a limiter is just a compressor with a high ratio. Therefore, if your bass is too dynamic, then you could increase the ratio of the compressor until it is acting like a limiter. Or just throw on a dedicated limiter from the get-go.
Great tutorial Eric! Keep it up!
I have the Kramer plug-ins. They are great. You can definitely get great results using them. All these plug-ins are a little different, but you can achieve good results with both the Kramer and Slate plug-ins. In general my philosophy is to make use of what you have and only purchase new things when necessary. You can make that call yourself though.
Super sound! Bravo!
Thanks for your feedback. Keep rocking out!
No problem, that plug-in is a "Trim" plug-in. It is a "volume" or "gain" plug-in that changes the amplitude of a signal.
i mixed my bass on a modern metal(Metalcore) mix like you did and it sounded amazing, thanks dude
+Felipe Jarkor:$ Awesome. I'd be interested in hearing how it sounds, if you have it posted some where online. Keep rocking out!
thats great to hear...I'm waiting for the piano tutorial...and please consider using any VSTi piano for your tutorial please.
Thanks for your feedback! A vocal video is in the works. I also have some other ideas for bass and piano too...
Softube saturation is a free AAX plug-in. It would be a cheap way to add some subtle 'analog-type' saturation to your mixes.
I guess my description was probably a little bit confusing. My video really only demonstrated "spectral evidence" that nonlinear processing is occurring. Harmonics can be a consequence of a nonlinear system. I am going to run out of space for my response so I will break it up into a couple of answers.
Awesome sound!
really curious about the whole project mix with all those plugs, your computer specs and any idea on work around to it...if you could that would be awesome...oh sound really great and I learned a lot from you...thanks...
Amazing tutorial. Thank You.
Thank you mate,very helpful tutorial,cheers
Thanks for checking out the videos. I would be happy to send any of the videos for you to download. Send me a private message, and I can upload them for you.
It is a stock Pro Tools plug-in called Trim
Hi Eric,
Love this video and technique, keep up the good work!!, is it possible to achieve a similar technique with the Kramer tape and tube plugins?? I just wanted to check if it's possible before going out and spending more money on the Slate ones.
Hi Eric, your tutorial is really helpful to me....I always having issues with my bass....I mostly use VSTi bass, will appreciate if you could make Tutorials On VSTi's please.
The drums are from the CLA Expansion Pack for SSD4. I tweaked them a little bit too. You can check out my video on that if you want to know how I achieved this particular sound.
Thanks for all your questions. It is a stock Pro Tools plug-in.
I swear I'm listening to Kermit teach me how to mix a bass guitar. This is awesome.
great video! thanks
You're the Man!
Thanks! Keep rocking out
you keep me from working xD MASTERCLASS
Thanks for your feedback. Keep rocking out! If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a message.
In the video I am demonstrating the Waves Frequency Analyzer and also the IK Multimedia Frequency Analyzer that comes as part of the T-racks bundle.
Thanks for clarifying. Could you do a video dedicated to frequency masking? I am sure there's a lot of people out there that are having difficulties fitting all instruments in a mix, including myself.
the song sounds amazing... are you a sound engineer or something?
i'm making the mixing of a post rock band EP, and this is very helpfull, but the thing is they use a GK bass amp system, there's a big difference talking about room space and acoustic issues in the recording methods, but anyway i'd like to know how could I dig in the recording process I only have a sm57 and a "crap"inger B1 condenser mic... is a good idea to blend both trying to do the job of a Senn 421
(i know is not comparable a dynamic and a condenser) but?
or just the sm57?
plus using a DI to amulate the bass into the SVX?
forward to SSL E channel, Waves Q10 EQ, "secret incredient fxs, API 2500 compressor, and such... I use logic pro DAW...
Thanks for all!
Great tutorial. Is this an actual song? I actually like it quite a lot. ha
Nice video.. Is there any tutorial the drum that is mixed in this video¿?
The other basic characteristic of linear systems is:
When you have some input A that produces output X and some input B that produces output Y, then the input (A+B) should produce output (X+Y). If you really want to understand the difference between linear systems and nonlinear systems, you could start by checking out the "superposition principle" on wikipedia. I would be happy to try to explain any questions you have if it is confusing.
Nice vid...some good ideas. All you need do now is touch on placing the vocal in a mix correctly.
Oh thanks! That was tricky :O)
Eric, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I am being a bit doubtful on attack and release settings: I noticed you mentioned fast attack and release turning the knobs clockwise (I am of course referring to the same waves 1176 plugin), but have seen other videos where they refer to fast attack and release turning knobs counter-clockwise. Could you please provide more insight on this? I want to make sure I am pursuing the right settings when wanting to apply both fast and slow.
The 1176 is a very unique compressor. The fastest settings for attack and release are all the way clockwise. You can try it out for yourself. Watch the gain reduction meter at the extreme settings. If you are not using an 1176 compressor (or model of the compressor) then the attack/release knobs might be different.
thanks a lot!
Linear systems have some basic characteristics:
If you scale the input to the system by some amount then the output should be scaled by the same amount. This was violated in the SSL channel strip because as I increased the level of the input signal, the output signal did not increase by the same amount. In fact the output at the frequency of the input was limited, and energy started occurring at other frequencies.
Slate Digital VCC and Slate digital VTM are very expensive for me, could Waves nls replace them??? Could you recomend any other vsts that would make a similar analog effect??
Thanks
so U are useing 2 exactly the same bass track ? its not recordede with different input; one DI, and other amp ? the same ? no panning, no different eq ?
I'm surprised there's no TSE BOD in the chain :P
Send me a private message and I will send you the session if you want. I have an iMac 3.4 GHz i7 with 4G of ram. I "freeze" a lot of my tracks during mixing to save processing power.
Fantastic mix, what drums are you using in this?
Thanks for the feedback. I am using the SSD4 sampler with the CLA Expansion pack. I have another video where I demonstrate how I like to process it. You can check it out if you are interested in how I got this sound.
Will do, thanks for the reply. I had a sneaking suspicion it might've been it, the snare sounds pretty CLA-ish. If you have it, I'd love to see you do a video on Toontrack's Rock Warehouse SDX!
luiza177music I haven't picked up the Rock Warehouse yet. I will definitely pick it up in the future. I usually wait until Toontrack puts their libraries on sale...
I would've normally waited, but I've been waiting for an SDX like this for a long time, so I just had to have it ASAP. I just usually buy stuff from AudioDeluxe, their prices are the best I've seen.
luiza177music I also tend to find the best prices at AD, but there are several other retailers to also compare. What has been your impression of the Rock Warehouse SDX?
is there anything by waves that can do what the vcc does? i don't own any of slates stuff.
You are right that it is not very intuitive to send a private message on RUclips. You have to go to my user page, click on 'about', then you will 'message'.
The plugin at 26.02, is a tune plugin? sory english is not my native language. Also which brand?
Erik how much do you charge per mix?? Thinking about sending some work
Which Signal Generator??? I know is a sine wave, but don´t know which one you are using.
Holy goddamn hell. How much does all these plugins cost? Think I need to sell my car?
Hey guys, welcome back. Today, I am going to be showing you how to process bass guitar. Along the way, i'll take you through my signal chain. I'm going to be going through all the parameters that I am using. I have all my plugins set up and I'll be going through them one by one to show my signal flow. I'll be going through each plugin one by one so you can see what i am doing. At the end of the video, I am going to talk about gain staging and also touch on non-linear processing. For those of you who have been asking, I'm going to show you the bass guitar today. Great mixes but this is all typed out in the description! Let the video be the video!
Hi Eric,
How do I actually send a pm?? I've been looking all over the place. No luck :O(
Eric why u choose Compression EQ then hi Filter?how do choose when u want Pre or post comp
this depends on if you want the compressor to color certain frequencies. If your compressor will boost low frequencies, it doesn't make sense the have it pre EQ if your going to cut them anyway
thnx for info
Which frequency analiser do you use??
That should work well. Experiment with different ideas until you find what works.
You sound like a great guy! please get to the point, which is...mixing BASS GUITAR !!!???
What band and song is this?
errr mesmerized..ooops sorry
the final mix sounds the same as the initial wtf?
Can not listen to anyone that says ah every other word.
hey! cut him some slack! sometimes he says "endah" instead...
anyway sounds bad
