Hey! This week I offer up some advice on what happens when you aren't completely in love with an artist's sketch. This week i'll share a couple of my stories about how I've talked to artists about tweaking different designs, and even one time where I had to walk away from a tattoo completely.
Hopefully that never happens to you! But stay turned for this week's tattoo talk tuesday.

I had to ask an artist to change a drawing once. He actually insisted on making a new appointment and redrawing the whole thing and told me we would treat that appointment as a consultation... Super nice guy.

I had to turn down my first tattoo, so I was already nervous enough ! I tried to be really clear with the references I gave the artist and I showed up on the day and it was twice as large and totally different to what I had in mind. I was so devastated with all the apprehension beforehand then finally seeing a design that just wasn't for me. I was honest with my artist and we ended up working together on creating something perfect and he happily drew it up for me and we both left happy. It took a little longer because of course he had to redraw the whole thing but it was 100% worth nicely turning down the original tattoo and taking on his ideas and knowledge as an artist - definitely worth being brave and talking to your artist if you need to ! It's your body you gotta love every inch forever x

Hey that's really cool they worked with you to make you happy! Normally I tell my artist my size preference, or if size isn't a factor I tell them my price range and they could make it revel any to that. I'm glad it worked out tho!!

actually i've been in situations like this..
last summer I was in Victoria BC and i wanted to get a tattoo to remember my trip. So i went in a random tattoo shop and asked for an appointment for the next day. I asked for a bear head and i wanted it to have a nice happy look on its face. But.... i forgot to mention that i wanted it to be this way as most bear tattoos portray like angry screaming bears. So anyway, I came in the next day and the tattoo artist was drawing the stencil and asked me to come and see if it was okay, and he was drawing that kind of angry bear. And I was like "well, I forgot to mention it yesterday, but i imagined it more like a happy bear..." and he was like yeah no problem i printed a happy bear too so no worries. So i got it tattooed and i'm super happy with it and the artist was really cool

My most recent tattoo was from a travelling tattoo artist, she's from the UK and came to Canada for a convention. I booked an appointment ahead of time and met up with her at the convention. I was getting a pinecone and the reference image I sent was a short chubby pinecone but the image she had drawn was tall and narrow and more spread out than I had hoped for, and she had drawn it up really nicely on this crazy beautiful paper so it wasn't like a quick fix sketch or anything. The drawing though was beautiful and truly her style and for a moment I was a bit panicked bc I had imagined it differently but the longer I looked at it, the more I loved it. I didn't ask for any changes and I got it tattooed and now I'm so happy with it and it feels more like a piece of her art and I'm actually glad it happened the way it did.

The same thing happened with me today with my first tattoo. I sent two references pictures because I wasn't sure which one of the arrows I sent I really wanted. Instead the artist combined the two arrow designs into one arrow. At first I was like this is now what I wanted can this be changed. My tattoo artist was going to change it for me but the more me and my sister looked at it the more we fell in love with the design the artist drew up. It's such a unique looking arrow. Absolutely love it and couldn't have asked for a better first tattoo.

I have a similar experience w my bumble bee tattoo I just got, my artist drew it totally different than I had imagined, we made some small adjustments but I went w her original design. I absolutely love how it turned out. It is probably one of the best tattoos I have. Trust the process!!

As an artist and a budding tattoo artist, I must say: PLEAAAASE tell the artist if you don't like a design! Artists are usually good at receiving criticism, it's one of the integral parts of becoming a GOOD artist. If someone reacts badly to criticism or even minor suggestions, it's not your fault. Sure, it hurts, but artists need to hear it. Personally I prefer constructive criticism over praise and "likes", because I can't get anything out of them :/
Also, when it comes to tattoos, certain amount of customer service is there. Artists should be flexible; tweaks are always possible, even if it means more work. Some artists are simply too busy (or cocky) for it, but you can always at least ask! I'd hate to do a tattoo on someone if they don't like something about the design D: I want you to WANT it.
And, when you see the design, look at it for a while... It may not be exactly what you had in your mind (that's pretty impossible), but see if it grows on you.
Talking is always better when it comes to something as permanent as a tattoo.

For my first tattoo I originally wanted a small Raven and poppy flowers, I ended up with a GORGEOUS half sleeve. I have small arms and my tattoo artist and I kind of decided that my idea would look better larger. I was terrified at first because it was my first tattoo and it was going to cover half of my arm. Two years later I'm so happy I trusted his advice to go larger than I originally wanted.

  • @Starchild91

This is one of my biggest fears when it comes to tattoos. What do I do if I hate what they've drawn up for me? I honestly don't know if I would be "brave" enough to say no, or if I would be a big coward, put on a smile and say "I love it!" and then go home and cry forever. I think that's why up until now I have had very simple designs, and just drawn them up myself and sent them to the tattoo artist I have used up until this point.
It's kinda what you do, at least a lot of people do, when they go to the hairdresser and don't love what they have done to your hair. "Do you like it?"... "I love it! :) " and then goes home to scream into a pillow and wear a hat for the rest of your life while listening to sad Evanescence music...

    • @kagitsune
      @kagitsune 7 лет назад +1

Kristin: Many artists and shops have a "no previews" policy because of rampant art theft and cancelations. Basically clients will get the art, send it to a cheaper tattooer, and never follow up with the original artist. :( The custom artists are just trying to protect themselves, and make sure their time and effort is not wasted.

    • @rosa6132

Starchild91 you just need to have more confidence and speak up for yourself. Whether it's a tattoo artist or a hairdresser or whatever, any decent professional will WANT you to speak up if you're not happy so they can fix it and keep your business

    • @azugirl111
      @azugirl111 6 лет назад +1

Bro... Work on speaking up for yourself because it's really bad if you'd seriously consider getting something you don't like permanently etched into your skin just because you were too nervous to say no. Trust me I was like that when I was younger but you gotta get over it eventually.

My most recent tattoo is a big, brightly colored, octopus thigh piece. I love my artist but I actually had to have him rework the tattoo before I got it. It was a really busy time for him and he actually didn't put any thought into the design until the day before my appointment.... and I hated it the sketch. It was just all wrong, it didn't look like it would fit the space properly and it wasn't in his style. I asked him if I were to reschedule my appointment for a few weeks out if he would rework it. He bumped my appointment back 2 weeks and he texted me updates over those weeks. Without the stress of a short deadline the final piece ended up BEAUTIFUL and I wouldn't change a thing about it. Artists are people too, they are mire than willing to work with you... and if they aren't.. walk away.

I just got my first tattoo and when I showed up the stencil was larger than I had asked for and in a more realistic style than I had anticipated. He was super nice about it and redrew it without charge for the extra time and he told me he was happy that I voiced my opinion because it’s my body.

Once I had emailed an artist an idea I had wanted and when I got to the appointment the style was just COMPLETELY different than what I had envisioned and I was honestly caught off guard. I think it's really unprofessional when a tattoo artist is not willing to adjust their design. But also some clients can be quite picky "i want 20 flowers for all of my 20 family members, oh and also all of their names. But 5 of them have to be in this particular font, but i can only have one rose for my boyfriend. And also in 3 of them there has to be a unicorn with rainbows and the new york city skyline"
You should give your artist some freedom to incorporate his/her own style and ideas, and as you said if you really like their work you're going to walk out of that shop happy. I think it should be absolutely no problem to change the design if you tell them politely what you don't like about it.

For my first tattoo I wanted a sun and moon on each of my inner forearms in like dot work to look bohemian and I told the tattoo artist what I wanted and sent in a reference photo for inspiration and when I got there it was nothing like I wanted and I felt so bad because I had to tell him like 4 times of him redoing it that I still didn't like it but luckily in the end I loved it! My second tattoo off him was a hamsa hand and I loved that one as soon as I saw it so I feel like that made up for it! I just learned to be more specific and to send in multiple inspiration pictures of the thing that I want so they can get a better idea!

Something similar happened to me once! Booked an appointment with an artist I had previously gotten tattooed by because I liked her style and for a long time she was a "can do no wrong" Artist for me. She was pretty busy so I had to book the appointment 2 to 3 months out and during that time period she changed her style of tattooing (I like black and gray traditional and she transitioned from that to more minimalistic tattoos). I felt really bad because during her first tattoo I got we really vibed well and I LOVED it, but I wasn't into the new look and eventually gave up my deposit and appt. I'd rather give up 50 bucks for a tattoo I didn't get than give up way more money for a tattoo I didn't love. During that time before deciding, I thought of your experience with the popular tattoo artist making a drawing that was way too big and definitely benefited from it. Thanks for all your great advice!

I completely agree with your views on finding an artist that does no wrong in your eyes. I've found those artists personally and it makes my experience getting tattooed SO much better. That trust is there and it's so important to trust your artist. And funny story, when I was getting my sacred heart tattoo, I had the same exact experience as you. I had asked for a hand holding a sacred heart and when I got to the shop, the design had a cross in it. I'm not religious at all but love religious artwork and whatnot. But I just simply wasn't ready to have such a strong, iconic symbol tattooed on me at the time. My artist understood and he replaced it with a dagger and I've been in love with that tattoo since day 1. Great video Qcknd, love you!

    I think I haven't gotten the tattoos I want because I can't pick a style and I haven't found a tattoo artist I like in my area.
a thought that came to mind. have you ever come across a tattoo artist that you liked their work but you see unprofessional behavior from them towards another possible client? I did see this one shop in my area through Facebook and while this one possible client did not act appropriate either I felt their response to them was terrible. would you trust them to go to for service or would that be a sign to not consider them?

Illyana Morales I once found a great old school artist who ran a shop with her husband. he was a good artist too but, when ever she was not around he was very unprofessional and extremely inappropriate. after two tattoos with her I decided to find another artist. simply because the bad experience kinda ruined the tattoos for me and the whole process of getting them. I feel the whole process, spontaneous or planed, is just as important as final thing ☺

I started a sleeve tattoo a few years ago, in a Celtic/Nordic tribal-line art'ish style. When I booked the appointment, I brought in loads of inspiration and gave the artist a detailed list of things I liked/didn't like. He says it'll be no problem, and I come back a week later for the actual tattoo. I asked to see the stencil, but he said he hadn't made one since he didn't know the dimensions of my shoulder/upper arm and if he had made a stencil he wouldn't know if it would fit right (which seems like a decent reason?). Then he said he has a clear image in his head, and he would just wing it. In hindsight, it might not have been the best idea to go through with it (I was shy and didn't know how to say no), but damn I'm glad I did. Best tattoo I've ever gotten. I absolutely love it. But yeah, if your artist says they're just going to wing it, I think it would be best to walk. That situation could've turned out horribly.

i was lucky enough to get my last tattoo by an artist who encouraged me to bring up any changes i had in mind before we went through with it. there was only one small tweak, but still he made it super comfortable and easy.
p.s. your look here is fire 🔥🔥

Thank you Amanda for covering this topic. I've heard that turning down a tattoo is better than getting it done if you're still unsure from a tattoo show LOL and i guess some artists think otherwise too (also from said show).

I have yet to watch this video but I thank you for posting it. I am a tattoo apprentice and my buddy wants to tattoo me but I don't know how to say no. I don't want to hurt his feelings by turning him down. He even drew it up and everything!!

This video is so reassuring; I recently got my first tattoo and am planning on getting more, but the fear that whatever it is going to be not looking 100% how I want it (even if I love the artist) is something that sits at the back of my mind all the time.
I think I'm just overthinking it a bit before even committing. :D

The current artist that I go to at the moment always remind me that they can change the designs, even once the line work is down they always ask at least three times if I'm happy with certain colours or if I'd like to look at different ones

One of my artists who has done a few pieces on me now I literally give him the concept and some reference pics of what I'm thinking, the design is then completely up to him, so far he's nailed every single piece and I haven't had to ask for changes at all. So I completely agree with going to an artist with an open mind and letting them create a custom piece completely organically. All of my tattoos I wear (minus 2 tiny ones and another that's now covered) have been completely designed by the artists in their own styles, my most recents are flash pieces from a convention and the artist were so stoked that I was picking their own work and not just the stock standard flash that floats around those places.
But it's 110% okay to say no to a design you're not into, because it's going to be on you and you have the right to choose what you want on your body.

I've never turned down a tattoo but i have begged my tattoo artist to see my vision even though she was skeptical of it, and now it one of both our fav tattoos on me that she has done.
i think if you can find an artist that can value your opinion and see your vision for your body then magical things can happen

I am VERY glad you left the $50 deposit. It genuinely upsets me when someone gets the artist to do a sketch for you, they say no they don't want it, and then demand their money back. You don't approve sure, but they still put their time into it none the less.

Have you ever done the tattoo tag thing where you list all your tattoos, why you got them, pain scale, etc? I'd LOVE to watch that. I know you have a lot but I'm sure your viewers would love the long video!:)

I nearly turned down the last tattoo I got because it wasn't what I'd had in mind, however I'm so glad I didn't now as I'm in love with it and it's my favourite one! It's a tricky subject, luckily it was my 4th tattoo by that artist and I trusted his judgement, which was good for me in the end!

I study Photography and one of the MOST helpful things my professors have stressed is this: the best way to get to know your Camera is by READING THE MANUAL! Honest, it sound like a simple solution, but it's because it is! Read it and then mess around with your Camera. It's going to be the most extensive way to study your camera. :)

Love your videos! I wanted to get a band logo tattoo and I found an amazing artist, but he didn't want to do logos because it wasn't his art. He asked if I'd let him come up with some similar art to the logo and I didn't have to pay a deposit for it. Ended up getting an amazing original tattoo from a great artist. xx

Right now I am getting a tattoo of a heart Galaxy with music notes that at first was supposed to be music notes wrapped around my arm with galaxies. But the tattoo artist had an idea to make it into a heart when I saw the stencil, because it was a watercolour stencil it was hard at first to see the tattoo artist concept and I wasn't sure where she was going to go with this tattoo. Once she explained her idea to me I thought it was a really good idea and I got excited if I did not voice my concerns and my questions to this artist I don't think I would've ended up with such a cool tattoo. I to believe in letting the artists have some creative freedom when doing tattoos I think it's important to meet halfway with the artist and have an idea that you both can agree on and feel passionate about. I'm so glad in the situation that I didn't walk away but that I asked questions and shared with her my concerns so that I could have a super cool tattoo by an artist that I really love.

I almost got a scared flower of life on my left arm with some water color it. It would've been my third tattoo. I was thinking about it all week debating if I wanted it or not. I ended up canceling the appointment which I'm glad I did cause now I have better plans for a better artist. Even if I never got to see the design I'm glad I walked away. I could relate to this a lot

So I screwed up big time when I was 17. I got a matching tattoo with a now ex. We (stereotypically) got our Anniversary inside of hearts. Welp, not even two months later, we broke up. So instead of returning to the artist, who I would have had a bit of a wait for, I went to some scratcher who used a big, black banner to cover the date, filled in the heart poorly, and blew out some script. Needless to say, I'm now 24 and finally getting my cover-up covered up. I'm so glad you put this video out here. As a tattoo collector myself, I wholeheartedly agree that I got some sketchy things "just to get tattooed" and have now been getting them reworked. Moral of the story: walk away if it doesn't feel right. (Oh, and don't get names or dates in black ink 😂)

my artist imo is so great that i don't think i'd ever dislike an idea she'd bring me, and even when she has different ideas than i originally had, with colors and etc, and she usually ends up being in the right. and luckily she sends me a sketch on mail some days before the appointment and asks if there's something i'd like to change. however, knowing myself, if i didn't like what she drew up i probably wouldn't say anything........... but luckily it's never gotten to that!
