    Hey, tattoo apprentice here--I just wanted to add a tip from the opposite side of the conversation! If you want to get tattooed by an artist but don't know what tattoo you want, I would also recommend asking that artist if they have a "wannado" book or a bunch of designs that they would like to tattoo but haven't yet. This is a great way to ensure that you're getting some work that your artist is proud of and enthusiastic about.

    A+ advice on the keeping it professional, not personal. I've heard a lot of tattoo artists talk about how that's a downside the tattoo shows. They give people this idea that getting a tattoo is also a confessional experience, and it can make them super uncomfortable. Some people may be into it, but some aren't. Like my mom was getting a survivors ribbon with a couple of colors that represent different things, and I drew a quick doodle that was kind of muddied. So she asked the artist if he wanted to know what the colors were. Meaning "purple", etc. He thought she meant what they mean, and the look on his face was panicked! It was actually pretty funny.

      huffle-pride my first tattoo was a suuuuper personal piece and i got really anxious thinking that i had to explain why i wanted it to my tattoo artist (because of the shows like kat von d and miami ink)... at the end, we talked about everything but the story behing the tattoo and everything went great 🙈

    I got a watercolor tattoo on the back of my leg, and I sent the artist about 5 pictures for reference and the size I wanted with only a few specifics. like I wanted sunflowers in a bouquet tied with a ribbon. when I got there for my appointment he showed me his drawing, we tweaked it a tiny bit, we mixed the specific color I wanted for my ribbon, I gave guidelines for what I wanted and then say do whatever for the watercolor I have no qualms about it as long as it looks cohesive. I now have a tattoo that I love, and a very good artist because I love his line work and I'll be going to him for my next tattoo that I get.

    I had to deeply explain to an artist once that I didn't want an exact copy of the art I brought in; I showed him what I liked and didn't like about it and asked him to design something. First time it was exactly the same. Second time it came out unique and beautiful but it was a nerve wracking experience for me. 😣

    I feel like such a stalker though if I find an artist I want to get tattooed by... Especially because if I just want a small quote or something. I don't think it's jazzy enough for a really talented artist...but still...I have trust issues just going to someone with a shop down the road or something you know?

    • @SmilyLily1996
      @SmilyLily1996 8 лет назад +6

      +Irene Suhwon I would look up the artist and if their work is good and they're nice and you feel good talking to them, it's absolutely fine. Just make sure you feel comfortable around the artist.

    • @richellebrink1688
      @richellebrink1688 7 лет назад +2

      SmilyLily1996 Exactly this. I went to a local shop and didn't really know what to expect. I went to get a simple thick line, and they were kinda like putting me down. I told my artist I was a little nervous since she asked me, and she told me 'thats like nothing lol you arent even getting any shading done'
      As long as you like their work and you feel comfortable it will work out!

    • @izzybump6194
      @izzybump6194 7 лет назад +5

      I actually recently had a friend from grade school come to me and was like "I hope this isn't weird or stalkery but I really like your work and have been watching the stuff you post a lot and I was hoping to get a tattoo from you." When it comes to any sort of art, not even tattooing, if a person is putting their work out there, they want you to look at it! They want people they don't know to contact them about it, to approach them asking for work, to like their stuff and broaden their viewership. Don't be afraid!! As long as you're serious about getting some work and aren't just wasting their time by talking about something you "might want but haven't actually decided yet" (to a tattoo artist, this is a red flag for someone who likes the idea of getting tattooed but will never actually come in to get anything) or asking a bunch of questions without actually offering them any business, most artists will be more than happy you contacted them. The most important thing you should do and the most helpful you can be as a client when you're looking to get tattooed is research your artist!! So you're doing the most important part right, don't be afraid to contact them c:

    Hey I have a question. I want my leg tattooed (from my foot to the middle of my thigh). I've already got my foot done but how do I ask the tattoo artist to design the whole tattoo before actually tattooing it on me? A lot of places have turned me down for asking them to draw the whole thing first. I just want to make sure it'll all work and flow together before hand since I can't make any changes once it's on me.

    I've used Instagram to find quite a few artists. But if I'm looking for artists In a particular city I like to google shops in that city and look at their reviews from customers, and then go to their websites, check out their studio layout and description of artists and then I look the artists up on IG, if I like what they have on their website. And then I email. Also the more tat videos of yours I watch, the more tattoos I seem to get. Lolol. Next Tuesday I'll be getting my 12th tat in LA (1st time in LA!) and I'm stoked. Can't wait to see what you talk about next Tuesday. :) have a good week!

    Wish I saw this video before getting my first tattoo..
    I basically had an emotional email, made the appointment last minute and didn't do consultations before getting the tattoo. My tattoo artist also clearly liked black and white tattoos more than the color tattoo I wanted. I also didn't get a good connection with them. It sucks that it was my first tattoo and a big deal to me. But because of stupid unspoken rules of communication (despite my research on tattooing) that my first experience was bad. She even forgot to color the top bit of my compass.

    I’m making an appointment for my first tattoo and the artist replied saying he makes the designs for the day of the appointment (so I would see the design on the day) which is quite common but I’m a bit hesitant as I’m such a perfectionist (really hate this trait) ...would it be rude to ask him for the design a bit more in advance? I do trust him and love all his work but I’m just a bit spooked on the idea of seeing it on the day and not liking it but feeling like I have to get it

    So like, I have 2 big tattoos one on my thigh and one on my ribcage and almost 2 years I decided it's time for another one my issue is I know exactly how I want it to look because I designed it myself. Is there any way to say that politely without disrespecting the artist?
    Both my other tattoos were done by an old friend of mine and he designed both himself, even freehanding one of them with pen directly on my leg before actually inking it. Unfortunately I moved away and I have to go to a new artist who has a few pieces posted on his IG in a similar style i want this one to be in. Any tips on that?

    How would you go about getting your first tattoo from someone far away? I'm wanting a tattoo and have searched far and wide, and the closest tattoo artists whos styles i really like are a day away. Bc of this, i won't be able to go into the shop for consultation. I don't have a spesific idea in mind yet, is it wise to just pick a flash and maybe change some aspects of it? Also, because my parents are very strict, i'll need a lot of info about the inks, other peoples experiences going to that place etc.. Can i ask former clients or would that be rude? And can i ask about info of their equipment in the email?

    The tattoo shop close to my house is amazing, but they only let you make an appointment if you pay 50$ in advance and pay the rest after the tattoo, the want people to pay 50$ in advance so that they know they'll show up and that they will pay afterwards.

      Annastasia Pitre Sounds fair I'd say (: a lot of Tattoo shops here in germany do it as well just because it already takes time and work for the artist to Design your Tattoo and if you don't Show up they've "wasted" time which they could've spent on someone actually paying and getting tattoed (:

      Sounds fair is a saying:

      my comment was in no way meant to criticize yours

    how do you go about asking for prices? sometimes I feel rude asking for their price details and blindly go get tattooed. mostly because I'm not sure how to ask.

      +nuzlea f I don't have any tattoos (yet) so this may not be the right way.. but asking if they have an hourly rate or specifying the size of tattoo you want, and asking for a price estimation seems fine. I think she's answered this before in other videos, unless you're haggling for a cheaper price, it's not rude. :)

      +itscarolinemary I have tattoos and have never haggled an artist, (I didn't even know ppl did that since it's super rude) but it's still something I struggle with. on account of how awkward I am. but generally, I would like to hear how Amanda, a person who is heavily tattooed, deals with this topic.

      +nuzlea f I'm pretty heavily tattooed and most of mine are done by the same guy. I am very lucky that I've been getting tattoos since the beginning of his career and I have gotten grandfathered into his old prices. normally i book a day and in the beginning i've asked 'how much for a complete day', he never charges more then that. sometimes its less then half. recently he tattooed my mom and i and gave us a really good deal the tattoo wasn't super in depth or anything but still i really thought that was nice of him. but i always always always tip him after every session. and i tip him well. but even if it was someone new i would go 'how much time should i book and what are you looking at for price', i never haggle either. when you think about it it's not just the time they're tattooing you but they're doing a lot of work outside of the studio coming up with ideas for your tattoo and prepping too.

      I would just ask the hourly rate and then how much time they think the tattoo will take

      +nuzlea f It deppends on the tattoo artist status. A local artist would give you a price with the appointment I guess. An artist with more reputation may email you back with the price per session or per hour of work. A super duper to high class artist will make you choose an stimation of the money you are willing to spend, not less than 1200$, and will make an stimation which eventually can end up being 500$ up or down that price.
      It's for sure something complicated, most artists don't really know how much they are going to charge until they finish the tattoo, because it's hard to plan how long it's going to take. My best advice would be to always think it's going to be more expensive than the stimated price, that way you won't be in trouble.

    how and when do you ask about pricing and if you need to give a deposit. Also how do you give a deposit to artists out of town? thank you!

    My artist moved to a different province and I want more scarifications. I already talked to him about it; asking if he was intending to come back as a guest at any point in the future and if I would know when by keeping an eye on his shops FB page. But I'm stressing out a bit on this. I like to give him a lot creative freedom so I'd like to give him plenty of time to think and sketch out my scar, but I don't want to harass him either. Do you think it would be okay to talk to him now or should I just tough it out and wait till he visits?
