Just watched Hamilton on Disney+ for the first time and I am absolutely enamored with this scene. Me tooo. I watched it four times in different videos. Cried every time. Gonna give credit to how amazing Phillipa was through this. She embodies Eliza so well
When I see I Eliza gasp, I’m overwhelmed with emotions and I just sit their and cry. Thinking you can finally rest Eliza. Looking back on the play and the real story, it was never just Alexander’s story. It was Eliza’s as well.
the lines that never fail to make me start crying: “but when you’re gone who remembers your name? who keeps your flame? who tells your story?” “i put myself back in the narrative.” “he gives me what you always wanted - he gives me more TIME!” “you could have done so much more if you only had time...” “the orphanage...” “in their eyes i see you alexander...!” “will they tell my story? oh i can’t wait to see you again...”
Wait i just realised why the line "i helped raise hundreds of children, I get to see them growing up" was so emphasised. Cuz she couldnt really see phillip grow up, she never saw him get married, have kids, fulfil his dreams...
This is the part of this song that gets me the most. Just "the orphanage" I already feel tears. I've watched the musical twice with my family and both times me and my mom were crying at the end
The end gasp is so beautiful. I love the idea of it being a reaction to the audience and musical as a whole because I just think that’s so sweet. It makes sense too, her expression is shock and disbelief at first and then turns into a sort of happiness. Phillipa gave a PERFORMANCE
Big misconception is that the part when Eliza gasps it’s actually her breaking the 4th wall and seeing the audience and how she did her best to make her and Alexander’s story told and it’s NOT her going to heaven and seeing Alexander it’s just her being proud of what she did and accomplished
There’s no real answer or real ending. That’s how Lin explained it in an interview, that you could interpret it as anything because every Elisa did it differently.
"I think it's different for each Eliza," Miranda stated when asked what the gasp actually means. "I do think that it traverses time, in some way, whether that thing she's seeing is Hamilton, whether that thing she's seeing is heaven, whether that thing she's seeing is the world now. I think those are all valid and all fair. I do think she is seeing across a span of time." - Lin-Manuel Miranda during a Wired interview. So I guess in a weird way, you're all correct, so as long as you are not telling someone else they aren't.
So coming from a person, who has never seen Hamilton, this broke my heart. I didn’t know what I was expecting when I would hear the gasp, as I’ve seen so many reports about it and such. As soon as I heard it and saw her face, I got chills so hard, and I started to tear up. I really want to watch this now, and I had been planning to for a bit now, but this definitely confirmed it!
Here’s my little theory of the ending when Eliza Gasps: I feel like it’s breaking the 4th wall because as she’s walking towards Alexander and takes his hand I feel like this is her already in heaven reunited with everyone. What my interpretation of the ending is that as he walks her to the front of the stage this is Alexander showing his wife that she did it, that all she did to make sure that his story was told payed off because the audience was watching
@@sassypants7536 Same here. "Who tells your story" seemed to be that of Hamilton, but she accomplished something amazing with establishing the first orphanage of NYC.
Jill Salkin and at the end she says "will they tell MY story" and then Alexander shows her the audience. She's reunited with Alex in heaven and then he shows her the impact of her story as well as his, the audience there to watch the show. She can then move on and be at peace.
Every single time I hear this song, I keep telling myself that this is the time I'm NOT gonna cry. And then Christopher Jackson as Washington sings, "She tells my story", and I lose it. Something about his singing just hits me right in the heart. By this point in the song, I'm an ugly mess of tears every. single. time.
And when she sings about speaking against slavery, Chris bows his head in shame because George did not speak against slavery. I love all the little details that each actor put into their character and how Lin allowed them to run with their interpretations of characters.
God the ending always has me ugly sobbing. Just when Eliza sees hamilton when she dies and her gasp really hits you in the feels. This musical can make you laugh and cry, it's amazing. Dang it I'm still crying.
*this is just a theory* when “Hamilton” walks behind Eliza, its not Hamilton, its Lin. hes showing Eliza that its ok to go. its ok and that her story has been told. so he lets go and when she looks up and takes that big deep breath... thats Eliza seeing that her story, Hamiltons story, and everyone elses story has been told, and that she did it. its truly beautiful.
This is my theory on why she gasps: Earlier in the song, she says "And when my time is up, have I done enough? While they tell my story?". After that she says "I can't wait to see you again." Then she sees Hamilton and takes his hand. This symbolizes her arriving in Heaven and "seeing Hamilton again". Then he takes her to the front of the stage as if he's going to show her something. In this moment he breaks the 4th wall and shows her that in the future, her work has paid off, and their story is actually told; she sees the audience and realizes this. Then she gasps because she's overwhelmed with emotion.
This last minute says so much. Elizabeth Schuyler was the definition of beauty and good. She wanted and didn't get the recognition she deserves. "When my time is up have I done enough? Will they tell my story?" Lin saw this and gave her what she wanted. Not only did he tell her husbands story, which she also wanted. Her story was told, too. I can relate to Eliza a lot about wanted your story to be told and feeling like your not doing enough, so this song really speaks to me. Lin is such a talented writer and this song is really moving.
everyone's already mentioned the gasp so i'll talk about another stage direction that i love. the first time hamilton walks past eliza, she just misses him. and then finally, *finally*, they see each other and they're so emotional and happy. i mean, what's it like to outlive your spouse by fifty years? there's a tumblr post that talks about this in a beautiful way, but that's the gist! is this how eliza felt? feeling like she *just* missed him? him being always there but not really? god, i adore this staging
I love how Hamilton takes a step back to give eliza this moment. Sure the musical is about him and it starts with him front and center. But at the end its her. Its Elizas moment.
I saw this theory in TikTok, so basically, when Eliza finishes the song, Lin, not Alexander, takes her my the hand and brings her back to the gifting of the stage. She comes to realize that Lin told their story, and bursts into tears. :)
The sweetest lines in Hamilton “At least my dear Eliza’s his wife.” “My life is going to be fine, because Eliza’s in it.” “Hey, best of wives and best of women.” “In their eyes I see you, Alexander, I see you everytime.” “God, I can’t wait to see her again.” (From Ten Things, One Thing, a deleted song.) “They’ll tell the story of tonight.” “I was too young and blind to see the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me.” “*she takes his hand*, It’s quiet uptown.” “And long as I’m alive, Eliza, swear to God you’ll never feel so helpless.” “I love my sister more than anything in this life.”
I’ve always wondered why she gasped out of nowhere at the end, until I re-listened to the whole musical again and one of Eliza’s earliest lines is “I have never been the type to try and grab the spotlight.” It’s probably super obvious to everyone else but it took me a while
i think it's a culmination of all of these theories. lin shows her that the world knows alexander's story, which leads her to gasp and break the fourth wall and see for herself that how many people truly knew what happened, and right after notice the sense of calm on her face. Maybe it's because she feels like her job of spreading his story is done, and she can finally go to heaven where her husband, son, and sisters and friends wait for her. That's why I think she looks so calm after her gasp. Or maybe I'm just looking into this too deeply lol.
The emotion and unspoken communication in this scene is simply AMAZING! I like how he guides her to the "light" of the afterlife and she now sees his AND her story. Incredible stage play! 💯🔥
I think at the end when Eliza gasps she is seeing how their stories are told and how they are remembered. In an interview Lin said that each actress though it was a different thing that Eliza was seeing.
I hope Eliza knows she did enough and she was more than enough. She fought for her husband’s legacy and many people including Washington himself. She kept the torch on for decades long enough for their story to be told. I hope she knows how much we admire her life, her strength, her love and courage. We are telling your story
I read somewhere that Philippa lost a family member before the show and in some of the scenes she was actually crying. And a couple of times you can see Lin mouthing ‘you ok?’ And stuff which I think is really sweet 🥺
I’ve alwAys looked at it as it’s goes from Lin playing Hamilton to Lin being Lin. Then he guides her downstage to show her the audience and she sees that they all knew her and Hamilton’s story. One reason I think this above other theories is the way she looks at Lin. She looks at him as if he’s a stranger she just met not her husband who’s she’s been reunited with. Not in a bad way, but like not in a “I KNOW YOU” way. Idk I love it no matter what.
As a grieving mother, I like to choose to interpret her gasp at the end as being reunited with Philip. Alexander took her hand and led her to see her son again after the blessing and curse of living such a long time after his death. After caring for other children as her legacy. That's what I like to imagine at least.
I see the ending as Eliza passing away (which is why she ends with “will they tell MY story?”) and being reunited with Alexander because you can see him whisper “hi” to her (also links back to him saying “I’ll see you on the other side” in The World was Wide Enough). When he leads her to the front of the stage and she gasps it’s him showing Eliza that she DID do enough and his story WAS told in the end (the crowd watching a musical called Hamilton is evidence of this), but more importantly they also told her story too. Edit: the little crossover movement they do where Alexander walks behind could represent her passing over into the afterlife, as Eliza can’t see him at first but he can see her, and it’s only once she has crossed does she see and smile at him. Plus when they hold hands she is clearly hesitant to, as if she’s unsure she even can and has not held his hands in a long time since she died so much later, now she finally can must mean she’s died too.
0:45 as Alexander passes by Eliza he is no longer Alexander, he is now Lin Manuel Miranda. Lin looks at Eliza as they meet for the first time. 1:04 Lin takes Elizas hand and leads her to the audience where she sees that her and Alexander’s story has been passed on and told.
I like how Lin has NEVER confirmed what this means yet everyone is DECLARING the meaning as if it's not meant to be open to interpretation. In my mind it has no set meaning. The scene is emotional, partly for no explicit reason. The actress is made to let out a gasp because it encapsulate the emotions of the scene. It's not **supposed** to "mean" anything. It's only supposed to evoke a feeling, particularly the feeling of the entire number, which could best be described as "sentimental." In musical theater/songs this is usually called a "stinger" or a "button," which is basically like putting a period at the end of a song. The gasp is nothing but a button, a period, rather an exclamation mark, for the entire show.
This is the eleventh time I've watched this clip and I cry every time. My parents are wondering if I'm play he do I explain to them that I'm crying over a founding father's wife who broke the forth wall realizing she had some enough?
ok ill revise my comment bc my fave interpretations that i hold true for me is the end is elizas realization of the impact she made the end is lin/main actor showing eliza the result of her effort ALSO thought abt this but it could be alexander and eliza meetingnin the afterlife too

literally that was me
Jesus I nearly started crying just from remembering that moment
Yeah, that 'forgiveness' part really choked me up.
When I heard this song for the first time, I cried like a baby at the orphanage part.
I also cried at the forgiveness part in its quite uptown.
When I see I Eliza gasp, I’m overwhelmed with emotions and I just sit their and cry. Thinking you can finally rest Eliza. Looking back on the play and the real story, it was never just Alexander’s story. It was Eliza’s as well.
I like to think the play is called Hamilton because it’s not just Alexander’s story but Eliza’s too 🥺
no no youtube why recommend this to me i wasn’t ready
xD none of us werrre
soap2day ?
@@mewhenthesquid bro I use that everday
the lines that never fail to make me start crying:
“but when you’re gone who remembers your name? who keeps your flame? who tells your story?”
“i put myself back in the narrative.”
“he gives me what you always wanted - he gives me more TIME!”
“you could have done so much more if you only had time...”
“the orphanage...”
“in their eyes i see you alexander...!”
“will they tell my story? oh i can’t wait to see you again...”
In its quiet uptown I always cry in this: forgiveness, can you imagine
when washington sings “she tells my story” thoo 🥺
mine is always "and when my time is up, have i done enough? will they tell my story? "
Mine is...
Ughmm...
The Whole Song.
Wait i just realised why the line "i helped raise hundreds of children, I get to see them growing up" was so emphasised. Cuz she couldnt really see phillip grow up, she never saw him get married, have kids, fulfil his dreams...
That gasp she does at the end is just so amazing, seriously. She’s amazing.
Is NO ONE GONNA TALK ABOUT HOW LIN MOUTHED “Hi!☺️” AT 0:54 I LOST MY MIND THATS TOO ADORABLE
Lin’s facial expressions just had me BAWLING.
She’s breaking the fourth wall - into full realization of history, her story, and the watching audience. It’s utterly magnificent! ❤
HeyIts Hannah ^^
HeyIts Hannah hamilton’s director said it’s different for each eliza and that’s a conversation reserved for the specific actress and the character
So I guess in a weird way, you're all correct, so as long as you are not telling someone else they aren't.
im so dumb but wdym by breaking the 4th wall?
So coming from a person, who has never seen Hamilton, this broke my heart. I didn’t know what I was expecting when I would hear the gasp, as I’ve seen so many reports about it and such. As soon as I heard it and saw her face, I got chills so hard, and I started to tear up. I really want to watch this now, and I had been planning to for a bit now, but this definitely confirmed it!
SAMEEEEEE no one told me abt the gasp, this film alone game me shivers
Here’s my little theory of the ending when Eliza Gasps: I feel like it’s breaking the 4th wall because as she’s walking towards Alexander and takes his hand I feel like this is her already in heaven reunited with everyone. What my interpretation of the ending is that as he walks her to the front of the stage this is Alexander showing his wife that she did it, that all she did to make sure that his story was told payed off because the audience was watching
Amaris Huerta that's my interpretation of it too
@@sassypants7536 Same here.
Thats not Hamilton, thats actually Lin showing her the crowd. And she gasps because she realizes Lin told her story when he wrote the play.
I am here to feel something
you came to the right place
R u ok
also the symbolism of her seeing him again and crossing over after she’s died 😭😭😭
I cry every tiem
Tiem
I cried tears of lemonade
Wait who is Lin?
@@flamingofaith4753 Lin-Manuel Miranda
This is my theory on why she gasps:
Earlier in the song, she says "And when my time is up, have I done enough? While they tell my story?". After that she says "I can't wait to see you again." Then she sees Hamilton and takes his hand. This symbolizes her arriving in Heaven and "seeing Hamilton again". Then he takes her to the front of the stage as if he's going to show her something. In this moment he breaks the 4th wall and shows her that in the future, her work has paid off, and their story is actually told; she sees the audience and realizes this. Then she gasps because she's overwhelmed with emotion.
Yes. My thoughts exactly.
Not to rain on your parade, but Eliza said "Will they tell my story?"
I wonder how Lin felt when writing this for the first time- he’d finished a masterpiece.
THE SINGING IS MAJESTIC, MAGNIFICENT, AMAZING.
Guys, I think my eyes are water-bending..
Imagine
*Heavens gate*
Burr: I waited my whole life for this.
Burr gets let in.
Burr hears a familiar voice.
Hams: *WELL IF IT ISNT AARON BURR, SIR?!*
@Dina Osgood Burr: FUCK, ITS HELL
I love how Hamilton takes a step back to give eliza this moment. Sure the musical is about him and it starts with him front and center. But at the end its her. Its Elizas moment.
Breaking the fourth wall wow 😭
who's cutting onions for a minute and 25 seconds?
I saw this theory in TikTok, so basically, when Eliza finishes the song, Lin, not Alexander, takes her my the hand and brings her back to the gifting of the stage. She comes to realize that Lin told their story, and bursts into tears. :)
This is definitely my fav song ... it’s so emotional and the harmonies are just soo good
1:18
It’s when she realizes that the things she has done we’re being told.
The sweetest lines in Hamilton
“At least my dear Eliza’s his wife.”
“My life is going to be fine, because Eliza’s in it.”
“Hey, best of wives and best of women.”
“In their eyes I see you, Alexander, I see you everytime.”
“God, I can’t wait to see her again.” (From Ten Things, One Thing, a deleted song.)
“They’ll tell the story of tonight.”
“I was too young and blind to see the world was wide enough for both Hamilton and me.”
“*she takes his hand*, It’s quiet uptown.”
“And long as I’m alive, Eliza, swear to God you’ll never feel so helpless.”
“I love my sister more than anything in this life.”
Eliza gasping at the ending, realising that people have learnt about her husband’s legacy was an amazing touch. Good job, Miranda.
Me- Why are you crying Maria??
Still me- ELIZA, QUEEN AAAAAA
Phillipa will always be THE Eliza. I never really cry during shows/movies but Phillipa did have me tearing up during her scenes.
0:33 SHE SAID “WILL THEY TELL MY STORY” WHAT NO STOP I CANT HANDLE THIS
“The orphanage” makes me tear up everytime it sounds so beautiful and god Eliza was just an amazing women 🥺
philippa is crazy talented wow such an emotional performance
“in their eyes i see you, alexander”
philip- gee thanks mom
The emotion and unspoken communication in this scene is simply AMAZING! I like how he guides her to the "light" of the afterlife and she now sees his AND her story. Incredible stage play! 💯🔥
Just watched this today and after Satisfied this was my favorite song 😭
Philipa is such actor, I really respect her, she really tells the story really well
I aspire to sing like Phillipa soo, she has so much control and talent and that’s rare to find in a singer
It's the fact that these actors and actresses put so much emotion In these films and shows and musicals that inspires me and motivates me so much
I think at the end when Eliza gasps she is seeing how their stories are told and how they are remembered. In an interview Lin said that each actress though it was a different thing that Eliza was seeing.
Some of the best acting I’ve ever seen...period
I hope Eliza knows she did enough and she was more than enough. She fought for her husband’s legacy and many people including Washington himself. She kept the torch on for decades long enough for their story to be told. I hope she knows how much we admire her life, her strength, her love and courage. We are telling your story
How is it that I can watch Bambi and there’s no tears. But I watch the last seconds of hamilton. And I’m ugly crying
I did not expect to cry while watching this musical but stranger things have happened
The gasp always gets me, she is an amazing actress 🥹
It doesn't make sense how many times i've watched Hamilton. It's so good I can't
The most I’ve cried is during burn and first burn, philip’s death, laurence’s interlude, and this song
When she gasped, tears flew from out of nowhere !! #Absolutely EXCELLENT !!
Jesus I can’t stop watching this clip but the gasp at the end gives me chills so bad it’s almost painful WHYYY do these people have to be so talented
I cry every time.
My family thinks I'm crazy.😂
As a grieving mother, I like to choose to interpret her gasp at the end as being reunited with Philip. Alexander took her hand and led her to see her son again after the blessing and curse of living such a long time after his death. After caring for other children as her legacy. That's what I like to imagine at least.
This scene i was gone. I couldn’t see my tv anymore, my eyes were blurred from the tears of agony. 🥺🥺
everyone is talking about how the gasp makes them cry every time but i swear to god the first time i saw it it scared the living shit out of me?!?
Jari Biscotti I’ve never seen this scene before and it’s so scary when she gasped like she looks like she’s seen a ghost
Plus when they hold hands she is clearly hesitant to, as if she’s unsure she even can and has not held his hands in a long time since she died so much later, now she finally can must mean she’s died too.
that freaking gasp gets me every time
0:45 as Alexander passes by Eliza he is no longer Alexander, he is now Lin Manuel Miranda. Lin looks at Eliza as they meet for the first time. 1:04 Lin takes Elizas hand and leads her to the audience where she sees that her and Alexander’s story has been passed on and told.
He said that isn’t true
I haven't seen this musical in years and it took me approximately 10 seconds of this video to start bawling. Incredible.
Really goes to show just how much of a masterpiece it is
Oh my god, this is the best sad moment i've ever seen 😭😭😭😭
I cried at this part. :) in a happy way and sad way lol
This scene gets me just thinking about it, so beautiful
The way she says I get to see them growing up, I love the way she smile when she says that.
The wonderful moment when Eliza realizes that her work wasn't in vain.
AKA Hamilton but it’s the section where I started uncontrollably sobbing
The gasp is nothing but a button, a period, rather an exclamation mark, for the entire show.
the acapella ensemble is absolutely chilling
This is the eleventh time I've watched this clip and I cry every time. My parents are wondering if I'm play he do I explain to them that I'm crying over a founding father's wife who broke the forth wall realizing she had some enough?
ok ill revise my comment bc my fave interpretations that i hold true for me is
the end is elizas realization of the impact she made
the end is lin/main actor showing eliza the result of her effort
ALSO thought abt this but it could be alexander and eliza meetingnin the afterlife too
That vocalizing at 0:46 was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.
saaaaaaaaaame. I could just listen to it on a loop
the little “hi” between alexander and eliza breaks my heart every time
I was in the gym watching Hamilton and I just cried while running the treadmill The other guys were like Uhhhh.... and I was kind of embarrassed but at the same time couldn't care about it because this was too sad😢
😢
Wow... Makes me cry everytime. She did it. Phillipa Soo is so talented to express that much emotion in a gasp.
