Well the gasp is how they interpret the character, most of the gasps are all different because of the actress and how they see why Eliza gasped. That’s why Lin said that there is a different meaning behind each gasp for each Eliza.
To be honest, I 100% agree, I didn’t cry at any of them, then I soon as I saw Phillipa I started to cry, I don’t know why, she is just so talented! Everyone else is to, just her voice and gasp hit a lot harder, as you said
I love how Lin said that the meaning of the gasp varies for each Eliza... watching this compilation you can actually tell that each one of them interprets it in a different way
Everyone's gasp is very different. Some are straight up heart wrenching, some are in wonder and disbelief, others fill you with warmth and some are showing gratefulness. Acting is something amazing
some in my opinion are really lame because they don’t show emotion and it’s supposed to be in disbelief and shock and some of them just show ‘hmh’ emotion in theirs if you know what I mean. But yes I agree acting is the most amazing thing :)
selah brooke I personally think it’s cool bc even if it looks emotionless it makes you think why they did it like that, what they saw in the distance, all that,, makes me overthink every time;;;
Something about the way Phillipa just can’t hold back and starts sobbing and clutching her heart just hits so hard. Like, she tried so hard to get his story told and never knew the outcome until now. Millions of people watching this show, bringing not only her husband but her son, her family, her sisters, and herself into the narrative. She’s done it. She told his story. I can’t stop crying oh my gosh.
Y’all are so quick to discount the other girls when only pippa’s is shot professionally and so it ‘s the only one that perfectly captured all the nuances of the performance
I think the other girls did great, but what made Philippa's so special wasn't the camera quality, but the raw emotions she put in her acting and that final gasp.
I, going to bet that those who watched the play live prefer their own version of Eliza. Most people like Soo's version because most watched the Disney plus release.
I'm not gonna lie, I like what the other actresses did, however, I still prefer Phillipa Soo's more not because it was shot more professionally, but because her facial expression to me was the best of all of them, they all sounded great, but Soo's was the only one to get me to tear up, because it felt more raw, and the others sounded like they were still focusing on giving a good vocal gasp that sounded to clear and "Disney princess" like to me. Vocally all of them did well, but Soo's gave me what the scene was asking for more, raw emotion she gave the right facial expression, and her gasp has this weird voice crack to it that makes it sound even more emotional.
The lyric “When my time is up, have I done enough? Will they tell my story?” really shapes how i view the gasp. Right after those lyrics, Eliza sees Hamilton and he takes her to the edge of the stage and shows her the audience. Basically, she had done enough and her family’s story is still being told hundreds of years later and that gasp is her being overwhelmed with joy that her work paid off.
@Sarai BayonTlamintzi OMG I teared up reading these three comments, such a strong thing. I dream of an "Eliza" musical, the same story but told through her eyes. She was the one who suffered the most and still did so much.
Peggy died at age 42. She eloped with a guy who was about 6 years younger than her. He was a distant cousin, and his family was very rich and influential. She had 3 kids, one of which survived to adulthood. Legend has it that she saved her baby niece and possibly her brother (they had a brother, Lin took creative license when in the play they didn't have one) from enemies during the war. She supposedly told them the wrong way to go to find her brother and was nearly killed saving the baby. She was ill for a while before she died. Alexander and her had maintained a platonic/familial relationship, and he spent time with her while she was sick, writing to Eliza with updates. When Peggy asked him to stay longer, he agreed, so he was there when she died. He was the one to write with the news to Eliza.
The gasp is Elizas realization that their story was told . It's not Alexander at the end grabbing her hand . It's Lin telling her that her story was told 💛
@@srod8004 then Philippa shot his shot down. It's the actor portraying Hamilton presenting the audience to Eliza. (Plus cast notes from all productions are hard to keep secret). Interesting how a couple Eliza's but only one Hamilton made it real obvious.
I love Phillipa’s because not only is her gasp so emotional, but Lin actually plays Alexander Hamilton and brings Eliza up. I just think it is better because it shows how Lin actually told her story.
Philipa just hits harded. I notice the other actresses embrace hands with their counterparts as if their elzas recognize him as hamilton, but philipa hesitates, this person seems familiar but isnt hamilton hes a stranger. Also shes thr only one whos gasp turns to tears which is so powerful!
she was an amazing, beautiful, and wonderful person who was like her husband, and she died just like Alexander with accomplishing so much to make our USA the place it is. (the good side ofc)
She isn’t seeing heaven. Some of her last lines are, “And when my time is up, have I done enough, will they tell my story...” She is being shown the crowd watching her story, and all the hard work she spent to tell Alexander’s story. The gasp is because she is seeing that her husband, family, and herself are all having their story told to millions of people.
OMG. I also love how he offers his hand to her, and she hesitates before taking it. Forgiveness? Accepting this is real? Open to interpretation. But it feels more authentic than rushing to each other.
Yes, her performance checks all the boxes. Don't get me wrong, all the other Elizas are wonderful and incredibly talented, but Phillipa is just more authentic. It's just more soulful or heartfelt or something.
I see so many people talking about an “Eliza” musical in her eyes, but I believe that Lin did enough. The entire ending gave her so much justice to the fact that Eliza did everything for everyone. Lin let Eliza have the ending, which is about the most powerful part in a show. It’s what leaves people all teary-eyed when the curtain drops. Lin knew that Eliza should have the ending since Hamilton isn’t quite the “star”, he’s just the person that every characters story circles around.
I think that if there was an Eliza musical it wouldn’t do that well and would face backlash with people saying it copied Hamilton or ‘we didn’t need this!’ So I feel it’s unnecessary for her own musical.
Victoria Epps and even that, while I'm sure Eliza has an interesting background of her own and her accomplishments are pretty amazing I don't think it could rival Alexander's in upbringing/war & political involvement + much of the story would reflect the current musical making it redundant. Much rather this impactful closing. P.S. by "rival" I mean in terms of theatrics
In the end, this is what Eliza would wanted, everyone to remember the story of her husband and everyone that fought for America. Is thanks to her that there’s so much information about them and, since she dedicated most of her life to this, she deserves the end of the musical that exist so anyone forgets this story.
@@lasarahdex9984 I guess the plot twitch is that “never been the type and grad the Spotlight” but actually Halmiton is about her, Eliza Halmiton and the stories she told “Will they tell my story?” Here
I love how fast Denée and her Hamilton rush to each other instead of the pause, like they can't stand to wait any longer to meet each other again. Then I particularly like the way Sharon Rose holds her arm out. It makes the wait on the gasp make more since, like she's trying to see through the binding light and finally sees who's there.
I can’t be the only one who cried at this? Philippa really gets it across and makes me cry when she sings about the orphanage everyone is great but Philippa is the best
I think the reason that phillipa's gasp is the best because she is the person who came up with that emotion. It's also a really specific emotion so it would be hard to give the same effect while portraying it differently.
Exactly they had time to figure it out and make it perfect the others sorts had to follow but the small touches in Phillipa's really sell it like how Lin mouths hello to her when their eyes first meet and the hesitation to grab his hand it all just overwhelms the senses well the others truly are stunning and beautiful in their own right Phillipa's can not be beat
I'm a sucker for the original cast but WOW. These guys are honestly amazing. They each bring their own spin on the character. They honestly all gave me goosebumps listening to them.
Phillipa’s just hits different man. Her acting is just *chefs kiss*. She sings as though she’s sharing a secret on “can I show you what I’m proudest of”, meek pride “I get to see them growing up”, grief coming back up “in their eyes I see you Alexander”, “when my time is up have I done enough” urgency to get everything done, “oh I can’t wait to see you again” finally relaxing into death. Even when she starts to counter Lin around the stage you see that she’s showing that somethings pulling her to walk around until she sees him. Wow. Her Vocals and her acting just make this heartbreaking
No offense to other actresses but damn Philipa is so damn good, the emotions, her breathing, her voice especially when she said “And when my time is up, have I done enough? Will they tell my story?” can’t help but tear up on that one.
Yes! That part right there! In the very beginning of me watching this, I would always tear up at that part; but now whenever I watch that last performance, I always grab the tissues and find myself in tears for this song! It’s bittersweet for me, because her performance is epic!
She’s the only Eliza that really made an audible gasp, the others were silent. Also the difference between the clip of Pippa from Disney+ and the preview of the show she originally sounded just the same as the others but she developed it and added more emotion
@@mollyelizabeth2009 when you try to make a beautifully subtle scene pretty, it doesn’t work. It just sounds like you’re showing off your voice, but we all know Lin better than to cast someone who would do that. Not saying the woman doesn’t have a nice voice, but it’s a simple and emotional scene. We want to focus on the emotions and not the vocals that are competing for attention.
I feel like this, When Lin was the one bringing Eliza to the front and with Pippas gasp it was like he showed her that he told her story. But, with the other ones it’s was like it was Elizas final breath and she got to see Alexander again! I’ve heard that the gasp is however you want to see it. And that’s one of the best things about art, that two different people can see different things from the same art!
eliza told everyone’s story but not her own, so lin did it for her, i believe that that’s why she gasped because she just realised she had done enough.
Everyone is talking about how Lin brings her more towards the crowd, and like shows her. Because he WROTE the show, so of course that part is more special to him than the other Alexander performers. But that doesn’t mean the other actors aren’t as good, it’s probably just not as meaningful to them. And let’s not bring any Eliza’s down they’re all so talented, I mean to even get on Broadway you have to have a lot of talent.
Ember Lina1378 I know, I’m just saying that when Lin performs the ending, when he presents crowd to Eliza will obviously be more emotional to Lin because unlike other performers he WROTE the show. So that’s why there’s more like emotion and meaning in Lin’s representation of Alexander.
It also may just be actor preference. Like no two Elizas did the gasp the same so maybe the Alexander’s all have quirks like that where they do or don’t do things lin did
2 theories about what I think the gasp means: 1. They’re breaking the fourth wall. Since Alexander died, Lin isn’t playing him, he’s playing himself. Lin is guiding Eliza to the stage to show her how all of their stories get told. 2. Alexander is leading her to the gates of heaven and she’s seeing all of her lost loved ones. Possibly also how her story gets told
I believe Lin debunked the first one as he stated he was always playing Alexander the whole time but it’s still beautiful either way ugh I cry every time
I think it’s Alexander leading her to the audience, they whole song and play discuss about telling your story and trying to build a legacy so in this case it would be very moving to see her happy her hard work paid off and her story will be told for years to come
xMoonWitchx XCGirl84 Interesting! I also watched an interview with Phillipa Soo and she mentioned that it meant something different to her almost every night. Sometimes she’s emotional and sometimes she almost happy so I guess it’s all up to how the actors feel that night
I didn’t know either, so I googled it! So, she met with Alexander in heaven and he showed her the crowd learning their story. She was all happy bc if it wasn’t for her, no one would know how important these people are and how she changed the view of Alexander and the others. But she was also rlly moved bc she hadn’t thought she done enough so the gasp has A LOT of emotion and feeling put into it
Ari's gasp is just so pure and sweet. Lexi reaching out slaps me in the feels. Rachelle didnt gasp but that point carried the same magic. The was that Solea looks at her "HamiLin" is so intimate before letting go. 💕 Denée's voice is pure and strong pixie dust. Sharon's little scamper to the edge of the stage is cute af! Phillipa may be an angel but they all bring something special and beautiful to end it!
welcome to hell Thank you finally the other comments were just like " everyone was good but Pippa" she is amazing but other people have played Eliza as well like come on
I wish they had more than one version of Hamilton on Disney+ but that's impossible.. but I love the other ways they portray the character! But I'm content with Angelica from the original and listening to satisfied forever 🙂
I love how Denee can almost sense when Alexander walks behind her, it’s almost as if she was expecting him, like she isn’t surprised at all and is so happy that he is there
Agreed. I honestly love Denee. She is outstanding. If you haven’t already if you like Denee, check her out in “Natasha, Pierre and the great comet of 1812” it is based off of war and peace. Outstanding musical. :)
My theory is that when Lin comes on at the end, he isn't Hamilton, he's himself. He takes Eliza's hand and shows her the audience and how he told her story. Her gasp is when she sees the audience and how they all know her story now.
I love the little “Hi” that Lin’s Alexander mouths to Phillipa’s Eliza when they first catch eyes. He does it on both occasions. Missed it on first watch.

People say the reason for the gasp is because Lin breaks character and is literally himself but Eliza stays the same. So Lin walks her to the front of the stage and she realizes that Lin Manuel told her story and that they’re not forgotten
She turns around and graps hands with hamilton who the break their character and leads her to the audience. Then she relized that they told their story. Also I think Phillipa Soo has the best gasp cause a tiny little “breathe” wouldn’t be what it would be like if someone retold your life story.
@@cayleeharper17 I sort of agree. In some of the Elizas (Rachelle Ann Go especially), the gasp is so faint that the Alex turns to Lin theory doesn't work and we're constrained to think that she's either seeing Alexander in front of her.
The gasp at the end is her relizing her and hamilton’s story has been told. Eliza turns around and graps hands with hamilton. then hamilton breaks charater and shows her everyone watching. And she relizes that her story has been told.
I feel that in the London version Alexander lets go of Eliza too quickly, almost as if he was nearly shoving her on stage rather than acompaning her, and I wonder if affects Rachel Ann Go's performance As a reminder scenes like the gasp are actually not scripted, so the actress can do it however she wishes. Simply copying Lin and Philippa would make it less interesting
I've seen this show 5 times now, London was definitely my least favorite. Eliza was definitely one of the best actors in the show, Hamilton was fine and burr was just awful! In my opinion! 😣
Though Phillipa my favourite actress, Rachelle Ann Go is a close second. I really like her singing and her portrayal of Eliza, it feels very authentic. I also love the passion in Sharon Rose's acting and voice. They all did splendidly!!
Lexi Lawson, the emphasis that she put on, “I get to see them growing up” hit me differently about how she didn’t get to see Philip grow up. So cool to see different versions and people that bring out different things
Ophelia Sturz Hamilton IS ABOUT ELIZA. The first act is about Alexander. And during the 2nd act Eliza takes over (probably during Burn). It’s about Eliza spreading the word. If she hadn’t dedicated her life to preserving her family’s legacy, Hamilton wouldn’t exist, so the real life Eliza created Hamilton the Musical if you think about it. However, I would like Eliza to get a spinoff musical called Hamilton’s Love maybe. There obviously won’t ever be a sequel tho so I stand by what I said.
@@tylermoore8218 The musical isnt about her, its about hamiton thats why its called that. I see where you could have thought that the second act was about her though its not its (mostly) about hamiltons affair and what happened after it and beacuse of that eliza is in a lot of it because she was affected by it and who lives who dies who tells your story tells what she did for him and his memory it dosent tell it in full. Which makes sence beacuse its about Alexander and not eliza i see where your coming from but i think your incorrect
I really believe that the gasp isn't her last breathe. She's already dead during that. Alexander/Lin guides Eliza to the audience. She takes a look around, sees the people, that's where the 4th wall breaks and she realizes that Lin told her story. That's a gasp out of hapiness+surprise
is it just me who feels like eliza has to be taken to the audience at a specific time. phillipa’s/lin’s timing was spot on because she saw the audience and reacted at a perfect time without any awkwardness, but the rest kind of were left to stand there and then give a tiny gasp after a while, which really killed the whole vibe for me. phillipa’s gasp happens almost immediately when she sees the audience which shows the pure emotion and relief eliza feels, but the rest kind of stare and then just gasp a bit and i don’t feel like the emotion is carried across as well because of that awkward amount of time just stood at the front of the stage.
I liked the Eliza that looked all around the theater and not just the balcony. I think the only looking in the balcony why so many people interpreted it as god or something else. I am all for turning the house lights on.
The title should be either of the following: - "12 minutes of the whole fandom's weakness" - "12 minutes of Eliza making the whole fandom sob in the dark corner of their rooms" - "a 12 minute video of Eliza blessing your life and heart with her story and her many beautiful voices" - "how to get goosebumps and a waterfall of tears at 3am by Eliza Schuyler-Hamilton" Jk I love this so much thank you T^T
Phillipa will always reign supreme, but Lexi Lawson had a really interesting interpretation in the last few moments and one of the only ones where the intention seems super clear to me. You can see her scan across the entire audience and up to the balcony and realize how her story is being told and react to that which was really cool!
Phillipa’s always makes my eyes tear up and stomach wrench. Her scream after Phillips death and this end scene. Idk what it is her about her performance but wowee
At the ending, Eliza isn’t looking at Alexander. She’s looking at Lin, who has told her story and shows her. And then she gasps when she looks at the audience because she has realised that her story and everyone else’s story has been told.

Omg I just got that ending
ᴡʜɪᴍsɪᴄᴀʟ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ so true Phillipa made me cry the most it just ain’t the same when you see another cast XD

she’s my favorite Eliza
Eliza
Eliza’s gasp is her seeing her long-lost sister Peggy and being like: “Gurl, where you been? Haven’t seen you since Act I?”

Its because peggy died young really young so she isn't there after act 1.
@@sammysardar7967 the timing of her gasp was flawless.
All the actresses are amazing but Pippa’s gasp was definately the best
The lyric “When my time is up, have I done enough? Will they tell my story?” really shapes how i view the gasp. Right after those lyrics, Eliza sees Hamilton and he takes her to the edge of the stage and shows her the audience. Basically, she had done enough and her family’s story is still being told hundreds of years later and that gasp is her being overwhelmed with joy that her work paid off.
Lin actually said that it was himself leading her to the edge of the stage. It breaks my heart every time 🥺
@Sarai BayonTlamintzi OMG I teared up reading these three comments, such a strong thing. I dream of an "Eliza" musical, the same story but told through her eyes. She was the one who suffered the most and still did so much.

She tells Hamilton's, Angelica's, phillips,Washington's, Lafayette, mulligan, burr, Lauren's, and all the troops story, BUT WHAT ABOUT PEGGY
Yeah what about my dear love meme PEGGY
Before people explain I know what happened to her this was a joke
She died
Peggy died the same year Philip died
Phillipa’s gasp is the one that made everyone cry, hands down

Why are yall talking about steven universe?
@@outsmartskater then go to a steven universe video, I like steven universe but Hamilton tho
Lin knew that Eliza should have the ending since Hamilton isn’t quite the “star”, he’s just the person that every characters story circles around.
ya I feel like the musical is about the Hamilton legacy, hence the ambiguity in the name and her having the ending.
delilah barnett mm, they never did say which Hamilton it is :’)

Yes I believe that
Everyone is talking about how Lin brings her more towards the crowd, and like shows her. Because he WROTE the show, so of course that part is more special to him than the other Alexander performers. But that doesn’t mean the other actors aren’t as good, it’s probably just not as meaningful to them.

Exactly! They were all good! But Philipa's gasp felt sincere
2 theories about what I think the gasp means:
I think she sees a glimpse of the future and sees that his story does get told in this play

They all sing it like that
Ok, but when are we getting a musical just about Eliza?
Ophelia Sturz Hamilton IS ABOUT ELIZA. The first act is about Alexander. And during the 2nd act Eliza takes over (probably during Burn). It’s about Eliza spreading the word. If she hadn’t dedicated her life to preserving her family’s legacy, Hamilton wouldn’t exist, so the real life Eliza created Hamilton the Musical if you think about it. However, I would like Eliza to get a spinoff musical called Hamilton’s Love maybe. There obviously won’t ever be a sequel tho so I stand by what I said.
@@tylermoore8218 Thanks!
ツ definitely! He wanted to represent the family, primarily the finding father, but the family as a whole
Thats just what i think though
Alternate title: 12 minutes and 54 seconds of everyone watching crying

All truth 😭
Is anybody gonna talk about how well Sharon did it. I was so shocked when i first here her voice. She’s amazing!
I agree!!! Her voice is AMAZING
DANG RIGHT 😱
Phillips Soo portrays Eliza in the most perfect way possible
I like that Phillipas gasp was so emotional it looked real. She actually looked like she was see him. It’s remarkable
Playing this role would be such a blessing
And a curse. some fans of the show would just compare you to Pippa and make you feel like you aren’t talented enough.
@@moonwalker50 that's really true. I never thought f it that way. Nice!
@@lavenderbees13 wow thanks!
@@moonwalker50 sadly that’s how it’ll be with playing any hamilton character.
Yes. Yes it would
I really believe that the gasp isn't her last breathe. She's already dead during that. Alexander/Lin guides Eliza to the audience. She takes a look around, sees the people, that's where the 4th wall breaks and she realizes that Lin told her story. That's a gasp out of hapiness+surprise
What about the other guys who played Alexander?
is it just me who feels like eliza has to be taken to the audience at a specific time. phillipa’s/lin’s timing was spot on because she saw the audience and reacted at a perfect time without any awkwardness, but the rest kind of were left to stand there and then give a tiny gasp after a while, which really killed the whole vibe for me. phillipa’s gasp happens almost immediately when she sees the audience which shows the pure emotion and relief eliza feels, but the rest kind of stare and then just gasp a bit and i don’t feel like the emotion is carried across as well because of that awkward amount of time just stood at the front of the stage.
Yep. The original cast is and always will be the best. No offense. Unless they cast Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, then maybe I would like it better.
yeah i feel that way too. maybe if the others stares were kind of like stares of shock and amazement I would like it more
Fun fact- the famous close up with the gasp of Phillipa was filmed with no audience. Hahaha
Monny Goldberg omg seriously?! imagine how awkward that would be for a few seconds
I liked the Eliza that looked all around the theater and not just the balcony. I think the only looking in the balcony why so many people interpreted it as god or something else. I am all for turning the house lights on.
eliza never raps, cause she never had to rush... to tell her story...
😭
Ooooooooh why did you do this!!! 😭😭😭 i never realized that!! 😭😭😭😭
But she does a kick ass beatbox
@@wysteriaherr8306 DAMN RIGHT
Everyone was a great Eliza but can we take a moment for his voice like damn!

Right?! I was literally like "damn!!"
The Yogurt Shop I think Sharon was hehe
Yass
We love Joshua Henry
i was thinking the same thing!
The title should be either of the following:
- "12 minutes of the whole fandom's weakness"
- "12 minutes of Eliza making the whole fandom sob in the dark corner of their rooms"
- "a 12 minute video of Eliza blessing your life and heart with her story and her many beautiful voices"
- "how to get goosebumps and a waterfall of tears at 3am by Eliza Schuyler-Hamilton"
Jk I love this so much thank you T^T
I did not not cry... my eyes are role playing the ocean....

I'm not crying, I blame it on weed... (BMC preference)
Phillipa will always reign supreme, but Lexi Lawson had a really interesting interpretation in the last few moments and one of the only ones where the intention seems super clear to me. You can see her scan across the entire audience and up to the balcony and realize how her story is being told and react to that which was really cool!
I just realized that the actor who plays Allison in Umbrella Acadamy played Angelica at a time... my mind is blown.
Denne has such a beautiful voice, and I think the sheer joy in Ari's reaction broke me😭
Ari Asfar is a stunning Eliza. Her voice is so beautiful.
Her Eliza is definitely the sweetest and most tender, I love her
I would be happy to see her live.
yes! her voice is so clear!
Solea’s acting is so gentle, and Denée has such a pretty voice. I love all of the different Eliza’s, it’s truly a different show every time
I was upset about the coughing tho
Philipa’s may have been the only one that made me sob uncontrollably but Lexi’s and Sharon rendition almost took me there too.
Most of them did haha
i saw sharon live and she made me ugly cry honestly i just love her eliza sm
@@alicer-w2502 samee I saw her in February and she was so amazing
I love how each Eliza put there own spin on the gasp and just the song in general.
Never heard of “the gasp” before. Was moved the tears.
Phillippa’s GUTS me to my core. I’ve never sobbed so hard in my life when I first watched this on Disney Plus.
