my favourite bit she sings is in "stay alive - reprise " when she says "is he breathing is he going to survive this, who did this, alexander did you know" because it sounds so good and her voice has real raw emotion it gives me chills every time
The most crushing thing about this song is how we know eliza is gentle and kind and at the end she wishes he will burn. The most gentle and kind of that story, had been crushed and broken by this act by Alexander.
when she sings "I'm erasing myself from the narrative" it's like ... I just want to cry because she's so good at singing this song. This song is one of my favorites
do you think maybe she didn’t think about sustainability because they were recording the film? maybe she did it differently for her normal performances? i just wonder if that could affect her choices somehow 🤔
Yes for sure! I'm sure the fact that it was filmed affected her performance in many ways. I know for a fact she's got great technique so I'm not worried about her based on this one performance!!
I think maybe it was just when she was acting. She definitely does a more smooth push in the cast recording of the song. I have listened to it many times lol. She sounds slightly different in a few places on the recording versus the film.
Also from I know about the night of that performance she was also grieving a family loss and it was a more emotional night for her so that could’ve affected her performance when it was filmed.
They also filmed this performance after doing a regular 8 show week, and had to run it multiple times. This should have been their very necessary rest day, but instead they had to do more performances. Every single one of them was physically and vocally exhausted (aside from Groff who had already left the show and just came back to film).
so I'm a theatre tech person who can't sing worth a darn... but I love your reaction videos, I'm always in awe of singers... This is remarkable reaction to great singing... but as a lighting person, I have to comment on how well it is lit and the color blending between her dress and the blue light that surrounds her, without losing any natural tones on her skin... and if you get a wider shot of this scene you will notice that they also matched the color of the accent lighting on the stage to the color of the flame...
I loved hearing about lighting from a techs point of view! I danced a lot growing up and tech rehearsals were always so long and I never understood why. I didn’t realize so much went into lighting! Thanks for sharing!
She is definitely one of the best in the theater. Oh my god, she has the voice of a goodness. One recommendation I have is Peter Hollens' Disney Medley. It's so good and covers so many genres. Amazing video, Hannah!
Please do a reaction to Alex Brightman! He is my absolute favorite Broadway actor! He's been in School of Rock, which I think is the most like the way he likes to sing, but it's a little raspy and shouty because of the intensity of all the songs. Then there's Beetlejuice where he does a specific voice. I think it would be really neat if you could watch an interview where he talks about the voice, because it's something only he can do without damaging his vocal chords. And then he has a solo song called Marie and Me, which I think is the truest to his real voice. Love your videos so much!
FUN FACT: they used a special kind of paper for the letters eliza burns, so it burns from the point she lights it up until the song ends so she can exit in a total blackout
I LOVE how instructive this is! You give us so much insight in how she's doing what she's doing and other ways that she could perform it that might be easier (or gentler on our own voices) than how Philippa Soo does it herself in this performance.
I love that the song has a backstory like how she loved Alexander, she adored him and you could see that in the movie and hear it in the music, she loved him and he broke her heart, I love this song because it has a backstory and emotion, AMAZING JOB! The crying and trembling in the voice at some moments makes it so beautiful.
Hannah you uploaded your video litterally one minute after Ryan Mccartan and Samantha Fekete posted a video reacting to your reaction to ryan singing dead girl walking lol
When I saw the thumbnail, I was like "Oh, so is Phillipa going to react and analyze her own performance??". And Hannah's look here (the hair, the clothing) adds to this feeling even more hahaha
Love this song! Burn will always hold a special place in my heart, as I played Eliza as my first “big” role in a musical. So much fun, and Who Lives Who Dies is a song you should definitely react too! Some awesome notes in that song
I remember when you first popped up on my recommended and I watched because I thought you looked like Phillipa. But then I fell in love with the way you teached/your reactions. And now I just see Hannah :,,)
I honestly like those little rasps because from the acting standpoint it sound like fighting back tears. For the sustainability part you talked about I feel like some of this was different because they were recording for Disney because when I saw the show I didn’t notice some of this Just my opinion love you:)
I can kinda see how you guys look alike but that might just be bc you both are gorgeous! Also burn is one of my favorite songs to sing❤️love you Hannah!
I love how she brings a lot more weight to her voice when she stands up. Standing up or sitting down are usually a really powerful physical actions in theatre as they usually mark a turning point to the character's emotions and bringing this to a turning point to her voice as well is great acting being done. She makes very good choices.
Hannah, I never felt that you were being nit picky. I found you so incredibly helpful! I am a singer who loves this song and wants to tackle it and everything you mentioned were things I was struggling with in the song. So it felt like I got a mini voice lesson in this song!! Thank you so much, I recently realized, thanks for a voice class, that I’ve been singing with a lot of unnecessary tension and stress and that it should feel relaxing and never tight in your body as you sing. I’m currently working on that now and it’s really hard but feels so good when I remember that it should feel as good physically as it does emotionally 🥰 thanks for your help, now I feel more capable to do this song justice 🤩
This song makes me cry every time no matter how many times I've heard it. The emotion she conveys in her voice is insane! I remember when I first saw this I hadn't even seen hamilton and it still made me cry. It's amazing!
I cannot help it, I choke up everytime I hear this song, even when paused, explained and elaborated up.... some sentences still strike home. I think that is a testiment to the greatness of the song and the performance.
As much as I love Burn I also love First Burn, the first draft of the song. I think its one you would love, especially since a bunch of Eliza’s are singing it
Something I really like about your videos, is that you realize that your audience values your reactions and your insights. I have seen many people doing reaction videos, apologizing for stopping the video too often and talking too much. Which makes no sense, if I wanted to see the full original version, I would go watch the full original version. You on the other hand, apologize when you just watch the video without commenting anything. I like that you realize and respect your own added value that you bring to the table by reacting/talking. Thanks for all your great videos.
This song is not easy to do. It's become a bit of a personal project for me. As a very happy Soprano 1, this song sits right on that edge between my head and chest voice. I'm constantly struggling with that edge. I've actually learned I can only practice is while I'm still only semi-warmed up (I know, horrible), because otherwise I end up really hurting my cords. Someday I will master the balance between emotion and breathing. Besides that, this is the first video I've ever seen of you, Hannah, and I think you're so precious. I already have a bunch of your other video queued up to watch.
Yall I don’t even know how to describe that but her whole look in this video, the slightly messy loose braid the color of her hair and dress just sends me to a whole different time absolutely gorgeous
Hey, I would love to see more from Hamilton on your channel! I think Renee Elise Goldsberry is PHENOMENAL! She plays Angelica, Satisfied is her best song for me. Or Phillipa also does Helpless which is great :)
That song at the end where they reconcile after the death of their son, and then the final song narrated by Soo, had tears streaming down my face. I do *not* cry at movies, but musicals have this weird way of getting to me, my mom and sister thought it was hysterical that i'm damn near bawling at that point in the play, I so wish I could have seen this live.
I would love to see a reaction to "Say No to This" from Hamilton with the original cast! I love hearing all the technical stuff of singing even if I don't understand it all, and that song is one of my favorites! 😊
0:21 Well, honestly seeing the pictures side by side, I can see some resemblance. Also video idea: What if you react to covers on youtube and share your thoughts?
Fun fact: They worked so hard on the scene. Because they had to find the exact right paper that would burn through the exact right amount of time. So they could have a dramatic moment of the fire going out when she leaves the stage.
Its the first time I come across your channel and I am officially a fan. Really love how you've broken each bit down and commented on the techniques used and that aren't that you think might have worked better. Awesome stuff

could you do more vocal instruction videos? like for songs and how to sing them? cause your voice is amazing and you are obviously a great vocal coach and imma need all advice I can get 🥺🖤
I'm with you - I cried through a lot of the show, mostly in the second act,and I never expected that. I had heard a few songs from the performances at the Tonys and the White House and loved them, so I expected the entire musical to be like that. And then came Phillipa's scream of grief when Philip died... Oh my God, that shook me to my core and I burst into tears and then lost it completely during the last song. I salute Lin and company for their excellence.
Ahhh I cried the whole show too! So much emotion, even the extrem happy makes me cry! Part of it being how great it is and part being that my health has been too awful to pursue musical theatre myself and now I'm 35 I think it's waaay too late. Even so, singing brings me so much... Life? It can be a private thing and still feel great.
THIS song hit me hard the first time. My ( now EX ) husband had just left me for another woman who he said he loved. I sat in the theater silently crying like a baby. So heartbreakingly beautiful.
I was so excited to hear Hannah say, right away, the comment about the song starting at that in between point in her range, because I always thought this song lives right at her register break. I love Philippa's gorgeous phrasing. I feel like many other broadway actresses may have over-sung this a bit. Her voice and her singing are so lovely.
i SWEAR they look exactly like each other
Agree, I think it's their smile.
