Hey, you were speaking in my ear yesterday. Yep. You don’t know it, but I heard you loud and clear when I went to Walmart. I saw a new fall decoration I really liked and was so tempted, but you said: Don’t you already have fall decorations? Yes. Do you need this? No. Wouldn’t you rather have the money? Well, yes. And I left the store without it. I am really trying to shed my materialism! Thank you for your help! I appreciate you so much! I have learned so much from you!

Off grid living isn't about being easy, it's about being independent of water/electric companies grocery stores etc. We have a large garden and fruit trees and I can the yield. We collect rain water for the garden. People will basically be forced into buying less and having less as prices continue to rise. Hopefully they realize that less is OK.

Even though I am not a "prepper," we share some of the some values. I try to conserve water and energy. My house still has the original HVAV (32 years old). My car, washer/dryer, and TV are all almost two decades old. My last laptop literally fell apart after 10 years. I buy new clothes only rarely, and then usually to replace something that "wore out." I have a decent level of wealth, but you would never know it looking at my car. What most people don't understand about a frugal lifestyle, is that it leaves money for the important things in life to splurge on, such as a great vacation. It also allows for generosity, to give to the causes I believe in.

I really agree with your concept of conservation. The off-grid thing is beginning to wear on people who have been doing it for awhile. There was a reason why people thought of and eventually successfully developed running water, indoor plumbing, electricity, central heat and labor-saving appliances. But just because we have these things and don't have to raise and slaughter our own animals, we don't need to gorge ourselves on meat or be wasteful of our resources.

    • @rhondashotwell7358
      @rhondashotwell7358 Год назад +1

You can have all of that with solar, wind, geothermal, and water power depending on where you live. Being off grid doesn't mean you have to live like we did hundreds of years ago. I think each household producing it's own electricity is a good way to conserve resources. Of course not everyone will be able to do that because of where they live, income, and willingness, but if the ones who can did that would reduce the pull on the grid and not tax it to the point of rolling blackouts because the supply can't provide enough for the demand. Also, the types of housing we build could reduce our needs even further.

Doing with less is really hard for some people, and many of those same people waste so much. As I've gotten older, I tend to buy quality things that I will be able to use for years, and now, I buy things that make my day to day life easier. I do a lot of cooking, food processing and preserving, so I've acquired things that don't wear out or break easily and take care of them. The same goes for garden tools. I have quality tools and equipment so that I don't have to replace these things. I buy clothing when something wears out to the point that I cannot repair it, and I either make a new garment, or buy another at a thrift store. My last alternative is buying something new, and if that's really necessary, it will not be from an expensive store. I'm retired and I garden and do a lot of yard work, so I wear mostly jeans, shorts and t-shirts. Who gives a toot if I wear well-worn clothing to buy groceries, and I buy only groceries that I don't produce and actually need, and most of what I buy I have a plan to preserve and make stretch. In other words, I try to live my life by making it, fixing it, growing it and preserving it!

After paying off thousands in credit card debt (YAY!) that act alone has the potential to deprogram materialism really quick! Most folks may need to keep at least one major credit card in their wallet. They may not be overly materialistic, they may be a thrifty spender and quite frugal but emergencies happen regardless.
After I paid off thousands on major credit cards, I'm debt free but I still carry a chase card with a large limit in my wallet. The difference is that when one pulls out that credit card, after paying it off, purchases become much more well thought out, more rational,, instead of instant decision, instant gratification type purchases. Progress made in becoming debt free, creating budgets, turning liabilities into growing assets, all of it makes you much more analytical with regard to your purchase decisions. Admittedly, I'm upset that this change didn't occur until I was in my 40s but better late than never.
Have always loved this channels content because it just flat out makes good sense. There is at least one other prepping channel that has a rather large following but the content is geared more toward sensationalized doomsday scenarios. In the past couple years the content creator on that channel has made a few snarky passive insult remarks toward this channels content creator. Why? His channel doesn't offer any real world day to day advice on how to save, be frugal, make rational decisions, prepare for a future which is much more likely than his desire for a post apocalyptic dystopian existence.
More of us who have to get thru the day to day, week to week, month to month type of living, appreciate the advice we get here as compared to the OH MY GOD THE WORLD IS ENDING sensationalism we might find elsewhere.
It's very much appreciated and I for one have learned a great deal here. As regards the things I already knew, a refresher course never hurt anyone, right!

Only 1 couple is able to live without a regular job, and they have other income flows that pay for their needs. Off grid may reduce expenses, but it increases actually needed labor.

A comment about the off-grid lifestyle. It's not all the same and everyone does it differently. For us, we are off-grid meaning we rely on solar for energy, well for water, bikes/buses for transportation, and gardens for food. This saves us 80% of the costs that most people have to pay which makes our lives so much less stressful. Whatever garden work we do is free sun and "Gym exercise". We only apply simple technologies like timers to control watering and pipes for irrigation and solar energy to power phones and computers. We don't sit 9 hrs a day in an office, we eat organic food, and we move around 3-4 hrs a day. It's a much healthier lifestyle. We also don't get bored because there is always something to do, to think, and to accomplish. We travel twice a year for 2-3 weeks for fun. We cage the kitchens and pay a neighbor to watch them for 2-3 weeks. That's it. Life is good!

I am by your estimation one of the 1% who chose to live mostly off grid in a motorhome. It’s a life that allowed me to take early retirement thanks to no mortgage and just occasional lot rental expenses, mainly when I need to be back in town to assist my elderly mother.
That said, I agree that this lifestyle is not for everybody and has his own unique set of challenges. I am blessed that I have mechanical skills and can therefore perform a lot of my own maintenance and repair, and know how to choose competent mechanics for work beyond my ability.
I personally thrive on being outdoors and love the change of scenery, especially traveling with the weather. Will be headed to the long-term visitor areas in Arizona and California this winter where for $180 I will be able to enjoy the desert southwest for the seven months when it’s the most comfortable, with access to dump stations, potable water, and dumpsters for trash. Have large waste and freshwater tanks, solar, and two sets of batteries including one solar power pack to take care of my power needs for everything except air conditioning. If I need to cool off for a bit I can always crank up my onboard generator. Again, being mobile allows me to travel with the weather to keep my cooling and heating needs to a minimum. I also get a chance to acclimate to the local climate, further reducing heating and cooling needs
To address your concern about eventually being too old and limited for travel my longer-term plans include buying a Boxabl and placing it on an inexpensive piece of land, probably northern Arizona for a homebase. The Boxabl can be folded up and relocated as needed for much less cost than just about any other permanent structure.
I personally thrive on the challenge of making do with less, including mastering the art of extreme water conservation while still living very comfortably

It is called "conspicuous consumption" and is the need to increase your social prestige by possessing and showing off luxury goods (diamond necklaces, platinum Rolex watches, mink coats, personal jet aircraft, stable of racehorses...) or bragging about doing costly activities (country club membership, African safari, around the world cruise in a super yacht, holding a Super Bowl skybox party...) or getting one's participation in prestigious activities published in gossip magazines or the society column of the big city's newspaper or social events website. There are even lower income versions of conspicuous consumption such as wearing the newest celebrity endorsed athletic shoes or showing off another addition to that expensive sleeve tattoo or getting a new set of chrome, spinning hub caps for that muscle car.
Instead of "keeping up with the Joneses'" it is about surpassing the Joneses and it is found at all income levels. You typically see this kind of competition for social prestige with people who do not place much value on building hidden wealth through frugal living. Conspicuous consumption goes hand in hand with excess personal debts. These are the people who are "all hat and no cattle" as the old Texas saying goes.

However we do not have a homestead which is a lot more work. Talking about people caring 5 gallons of water why not catch Rainwater like I do. Catching rainwater saves me a lot of effort during the summer because I don't have to go to the spring and bring back water. With any package products, everything from the words, to the colors to the packaging and placement of words on the package itself is put there on purpose to please the eyes and mind. Sometimes I wonder when you choose to buy something, is it really your own personal decision or are you actually being influenced without you knowing it? Some people actually don't care or mind at all though

They are built better and continue to work unlike so many new products today. In my kitchen, I use a 1955 GE Percolator for coffee. My car is a 1958 Ford Fairlane. The engine is all original 64 plus years now and runs like a charm. I am fortunate that I get to work from home 4 days a week, so I do not have to drive everyday. I also have several rotary phones. I love all of my vintage stuff, especially my car. Most of the items have brought a joy and happiness. Now that I am older I realize these things have never let me down, unlike so many other people I have known.

Thank You Prepper Princess ❤! I agree we are enough! I’m trying to convince hubby how much marketing and all of this television watching he does makes people want to purchase things they don’t want and they don’t know why.
I’m not affected. I’m content regardless.

Something I’ve always considered silly, to me, is people spending money on bottled water. Every time I get a glass of water from the sink or hose, people look at me like I’m crazy (especially when I was at work) but I think about those who like you said drink from dirty rivers, ponds, etc. Our water from the water is way cleaner than what some have to drink. I too usually eat one meal a day. I had a great recipe “vegetable beef stoup” that I could make for less than $25 and freeze eat for weeks, until hamburger meat went sky high. I still make it but it costs more now. Te key is to change the flavor by adding different spices when you serve it. 😁

I have 6 pair of jeans. I have just enough. They last forever if you take care of them. I soak in the tub once a week. My bad back appreciates it. I greatly respect your lifestyle. I have watched and appreciated many, many of your videos, and I think this is one of your best.. I was thinking about the concept of living below one's means which we usually think of in terms of spending below our income. As your video illustrates, we can take the concept further, and far more effectively by expanding it to mean that despite have the means, the opportunity, and the programming to buy and use too much, we can live happily buying and using much less. Thanks for the inspiring practical ideas.

I love these types of videos, reminding us of all of the ways we can use less. I need the constant reminders to off set the barrage of other input that I receive.
Recently I reduced my paper towel usage by 66%, I made a plan and tracked the outcome. They were small changes that don’t impact my quality of life but reduce my spending.
I keep an eye on my energy usage and have bought timers and Wi-Fi plugs to keep my energy usage down when I don’t need it.
I keep an eye on my water usage. I remember an old friend who taught her kids to only turn the water on half way when washing their hands. It’s brilliant, we don’t need water on full blast just to wash our hands.
I am in mid life and I am making these changes now to prepare for an early retirement from working full time. I enjoy working and I would like to work part time, not cause I would need the money but just for the enjoyment I get out of it.
I am currently at the peak of my income earning and have to take advantage of it while it lasts, so for now I stay working full time.

Certainly minimalism at its core could be considered the antithesis of materialism, but it doesn't mean living out of a van with no job. I'd venture to say your style of living is aligned with common minimalist practices. Thanks again!

Excellent information. I keep my light, gas and water to $89.00 a month. I take a good shower every other day, use lights when needed..I don't eat out by so I make my own mostly healthy meals. Yes, I do receive food stamps and I am grateful. I live in state housing so my rent is low and I'm most certainly grateful, however, I'd like to "upgrade" to a small bungalow in the future. I have a 2001infiniti with 215,000 miles. Ive had some car work done but my car is seemingly a workhorse. What I do lack is good medical insurance (I'm 62).

I have even less expensive deodorant and toothpaste hacks… salt stone for deodorant Thai Crystal is the best(also I lived in Florida and it worked) it lasts a year or so and costs around $6.25- and I use Dr. Bronner’s peppermint Castile soap travel size for about $3.50 since you only need 1 drop of soap it lasts around 2 years( yes soap makes me gag but so does toothpaste) I also supplement using 2-3 times a week IPSAB tooth powder which is now $9.59. This lasts close to a year too. My dentist is always surprised how clean my teeth are and they feel clean too - also when I want it more pepperminty I add peppermint oil too.
