    To me, it's not about the dollar amount, more about the lifestyle choices that you make. If you live overall a fairly cheap lifestyle, then you'll have money. If you have a lifestyle where you spend a lot, you'll have less. It's more about the mentality and the decisions follow after that.

    • @ccrbonline1752
      @ccrbonline1752 2 года назад +4

      I have a friend who buts cheap stuff at the dollar store all the time. She ends up with a bunch of broken junk she has to replace often, from brooms to flower pots, but she convinces herself she's "saving" because it was cheap to begin with. In the meantime, I'm using my $6 broom for the 15th year.

    • @stringsgalore
      @stringsgalore 2 года назад

      @@ccrbonline1752 it’s all about quality too. There’s an analogy about a person who is poor and needs good working boots, they buy the cheap ones because that’s what they can afford. Over time it ends up costing them more because they have to constantly replace them vs if they were able to buy the better quality more expensive ones. I have a couple of super frugal friends who give me hell because I’ll make big purchases or buy the more expensive thing. For me, it’s about quality. I research. For electronics I’ll ask my brothers to help me make a decision. For example both me and my friend bought our TV’s at the same time. I opted to buy a TV that was about $800 and I got the protection plan. I’m on year 4 and it’s perfect. They bought a same size TV for about $500, they had to replace it 2 years later (had they gotten a protection plan it would been covered). Bought the same TV for a little more this time around and just told me that they have to buy another one because this one has crapped out. So in 4 years they’ve spent over $1000 on TV’s because they went for price vs quality. This relates to everything big or small. That’s not to say it’s not smart to buy the cheaper option (buy generic, shop discounts etc) but sometimes being cheap (also different if you HAVE to be vs choose to be) ends up costing more in the long run. If I had to say my top 5 things to never be overly cheap on: insurance (the price may be lower but the coverage could also be trash and not cover things. I know some personal injury attorneys and not having good insurance can be detrimental) food, vehicles, electronics and clothing.

      For me, the big stuff is the things people often can't cut where I live. We have a 10-year waiting list for low-cost housing and insurance goes up every year whether you like it or not. I have company health insurance but the deductible is up to $7000 plus a 12% copay and it goes up every year based on age going up. House insurance goes up as the assessments of the house value increase every 2 years. I don't own a car but I have friends who are elderly who live a few miles away from a bus stop and there are months in the winter where the snow is so high that they can't walk on the street to get to it.

    Some of the things I do have to spend a bit more on; like I'm allergic to the sulfites in some foods and shampoos. It's better for me for cost and health to just buy the higher-priced and better quality item to avoid all the repercussions. BUT, I cut corners and am more cost-effective in other areas. I've been making my own laundry soap for years. It's crazy cheap and have taught my family how to make it themselves also. Given how toxic store-bought cleaning products are anyway, it is so much more cost-effective to DIY AND better for the health. I've learned to make "luxury" items by simply buying in bulk and saving a ton of money making everything myself. Then, those DIYs make for great gifts too! WINS all around.

    Coming from someone who has a parent who works for a personal injury attorney the only thing I would say is make sure you understand the risks of reducing your coverage to liability only (only can be done if you own the car). If anything make sure you have uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance, because if you get into a car accident and the other person only has liability and your bills are more than that coverage, you would either be on the hook or have to go after the individual and good luck. Also most liability doesn’t cover things such as if you would need a rental. Liability will cover if you are at fault (unless the other persons bills are more than that coverage then it’s on you), but there’s so much that full coverage covers that liability won’t, from rentals to car theft to damage due to weather etc. All things that you would be on the hook for. I would always recommend having Personal Injury Protection (PIP) because if you have to miss work, liability only (theirs or yours) won’t always cover that. As my mom told me (I live in a state where car insurance isn’t tied to the DOL) I have to make sure I have enough coverage to cover the fact that the other drivers don’t. Came in handy when I got into a horrid wreck a few years back.

    • @stringsgalore

      Also with medical insurance, you can only afford to be cheap in that area if you are generally healthy. I’m lucky I work for the government and I have great health insurance that’s like $20/month. But if you have to see the doctor often, have specialty needs, take some meds make sure that you have the coverage. It’s more than just what you pay for premiums but also deductibles, co-insurance and co-pays. If you don’t see the doctors often etc, it won’t really matter.

    I didn't realize what a blessing it is to live in a country (Canada) where your medical is covered. Eye exams are covered, I paid nothing for two surgery's or emergency room visits, nothing out of pocket to see your family doctor. Total cost to have a baby - zero. Between a government plan and a work plan I pay nothing for prescriptions. I would not have been able to make it as a single parent if I had to pay $500 out of pocket every month for a medical plan. I took your advice and got a cheaper car that I paid cash for and when my cell phone bill showed an increase I called to cancel and instead was given a lower rate and the charges were reversed. I know a guy who leased a vehicle because the fully paid for one he was driving required $800 in repairs. He was willing to have a monthly car payment vs coming up with a one time payment of $800. Most student loan providers will work with you. There is deferment.. but as you mentioned the interest rate is outrageous etc. There is also IBR (Income based repayment). There is also pay as you go, while in school, or forbearance, that should only be used for an emergency. Otherwise depending on income do the IBR and try to pay a bit extra each month.

    Spend $12k to get solar panels to save $100 a month on electricity not understanding you need 10 years of savings to pay off those panels before you actually save money.

    I just got rid of the 'medical' that my company claims to offer as a perk. For my kids, I will be paying only a quarter of what I was paying for them on that plan. So even though some benefits are less, overall I'm saving a lot and have directed that to automatic savings instead.

    Guilty as charged! I don’t have debt but I started from the penny pinching on the bottom of the list. My next goal is to get higher on the list and cut where I can. I like how you give specific details about what you pay on each item and where to look because it helps me figure out if I’m paying too much and where to look for a different rate.
    I also participate in habits that are costing me money instead of saving like gardening, thrift store browsing, etc. I buy organic fertilizers, a tiller, and built raised beds which cost me more money. Buying the plants costs a lot. I also have to consider the time I waste doing things that really aren’t saving money.

    Living in a small town in Kansas only 2 Internet providers saved 15/mo, cut the cable went to Roku 160/mo saved, cell service 90 for 2 lines now 30 for 2 lines 60/mo saved, total $ 235 per month to attack credit card debit. I had 8 credit cards, just like you said I found a -0-% no fee card for transferring the smaller cards on to it paid down to zero on those and transferring the last 2 larger balances to 1 credit card and beating the crap out of it every pay day. After listening to a few of your videos I finally got it, behavior changes needed to happen. Working remotely gave me the opportunity to move to a cheaper house. I was one of those that filed bankruptcy 2 years ago and was headed the same direction something had to change. I have a big hurdle in front of me now stage 3 or 4 ovarian cancer again. Big surgery coming up in a couple weeks. My employee has great benefits and have been great while I’ve had a few sick days. I still should have plenty of PTO to pay for my benefits while I’m out of office. They should teach this at each grade level after 12 years of age. Learn to save and put your money to work for you. Thank you 😊

    We were forced to take out more than we needed to refinance our home at the lowest possible interest. So, we did. We made sure there was no early repayment penalty.clause, let them extra money sit in the bank account until our payment was due, and sent all the extra money back. The banks count on you being weak and spending it all, but we did not.

    Don't forget Taxes....The Tax Bill will be coming in January or February, turn that Bill over and read the back. The Tax Collectors list the possible Tax Reduction options, such as Homestead Rebate/Reduction, Disability, Military Service Discout, over 50/60/65 years old, Owner Occupied. I have four discounts that I qualified for.
    My Homestead Tax Reduction rolls over to reductions on my water & sewer.
    On my Sewer Bill, I receive the Homestead Reduction, Summer Watering reduction rate and Senior/Low Income discount.
    My city offers an additional discount for Rain Barrels & Rain Gardens that reduce storm water into the sewer systems.
    I'm retired and sold my free & clear pick-up truck to my son. Once or twice I drive him to work, so I can use his truck. No vehicle, reduced insurance to liability coverage. Insurance is $45 per 6 month vs. $125 per month.

    I used to buy laundry detergent, fabric softener plus the scent boosters and the dryer sheets just to do laundry. One day I ran out of the softener and booster and my BF asked "do you really need those?" and I realized that no i do not so I stopped buying them. No difference in the laundry. I still buy the dryer sheets but I'm saving a bunch of money especially because the scent boosters are ridiculously expensive and it's nothing but artificial scents. Doesn't make a huge dent but it helps. I already cut out the big ticket items.

    Well right now I live in military housing. I’ve been here since January of 2020. Military housing can’t negotiate. Did look for a house put in an offer on a few but got out bid well both paid in cash. Then I found out the house’s were put up for rent and of course the rent cost is more then the mortgage in Virginia Beach. I’m glad I don’t have Student loans and I don’t have a Credit Card aside from my bank card with my bank.

    Offer suggestions for low cost repairs on plumbing or other home repairs (- leaky faucets, pipe burst, electrical repairs, etc.). You can be frugal till the cows come home, but if you don't know how to do repairs, all that saved money will go into someone else's pocket when something breaks. What are your suggestions for that? Sometimes attempting a repair to save money can cost money when you don't really know what you're doing.

      I am one of the people who break things whenever I try to fix them, so Carol, I am with you. I broke my dehumidifier trying to get it to work. I broke two television antennas trying to set them up. I am almost entirely finished with house updates without going into debt but I did one project at a time and paid each project off before moving to the next. Most things you can get 0% 24 months financing so you don't have to pay interest or a big price at one time.
