Chris, this has been the most helpful and informatively detailed video I've seen so far on onsen; should be a great help to first-timers, as is a lot of your info. Arigatoo and Aloha!
Japanese Hot Spring and Bath, they have a lot of hot springs throughout Japan. As the humidity is quite high in Japan, soaking in the bath is an age-long custom. The purpose of taking a bath is not only to wash our bodies but also to relax. We must wash ourselves outside the bathtub first, and then get into the bathtub. It is very relaxing to look at the scenery and nature of the seasons while soaking leisurely in a hot spring. I love to have a long soak in a hot spring when we can also overlook the sea, that is great!!
I'm quite excited to try an Onsen. It'll be my first time to Japan later this year. I think I'm brave enough to go in naked, though my brother is travelling with me so I hope we go in at different times lol
Depends.. The really cheap Public bath (like 500 yen) you typically just take off your street clothes and go in to the bath. Some Ryokan offer a public rate to use their onsen for the day.. in that case you'd get a Yukata, but it would often be a different pattern or color from hotel guests

The most important rule is what onsen guest must wash private part first and well before getting in bath tab.Purifying body first.
If you go to a public bath as opposed to a ryokan will you be given a yukata as well or do you just change out of your street clothes?
