    Nice and Fun build dear Miyconst! Finally some love for mAtx form factor!
    The only concern i have to say it's about the power consumption of that xeon E5 2667 v4, 135w are quite a lot for that kind of performance.
    Since that cpu is based on broadwell xeons, ipc and frequency are not that far from the first/second gen zen/zen+ that are getting cheaper(finally!), so i would stick with some older ryzen for this kind of project.
    But anyway, you did a great job and your build is well made!

    I've just assembled a matx computer in one of the smallest case i've found on amazon, it is more like an itx form factor but it takes full height graphic cards... it is called "mars Gaming MC-1000" and it costs only 28 euros shipped... maybe try somenthing like that (it opens way more possibilities since it can take full matx boards...)

    I did build a mini ITX pc with a Qiyida x99 MB and end it up pretty well. The key factor is the case as mine is one similar to a NR200 but much cheaper. I also used 2667 V4.

  • @beansnrice321
    @beansnrice321 5 месяцев назад +1

    Being the 1st gen on 14 nm cpus from intel, these Broadwell chips were more efficient than the previous generation but they are a far cry from what came after them in thermal efficiency.
    Usually you have to sacrifice something for a small form factor pc and combining a gaming gpu with a high end workstation cpu was always going to be difficult to cool. While the 4060 was probably the best choice overall it was never going to be easy to cool, either.
    I swear, small form factor pcs are cool for client stations but kind of lame for performance. In most cases I'd rather have a larger pc that's quieter and, going even further in that direction, I'm super compelled by extra-large pcs that cool really well(and quietly). I'm not sure if you ever saw that case that LTT had checked out that worked entirely without fans, it was honestly almost built out of huge aluminum slabs-style heatsinks.
    To me the real dream is the desk pc, a pc built into your desk itself. Done right you should have all the space in the world for cooling.
    Maybe it would be fun to make another pc out of the exact same CPU, MB and GPU to see how much easier it is too cool the thing. =)

  • @AdmV0rl0n
    @AdmV0rl0n 5 месяцев назад

    Anything you do is basically great Mr M! I think here though, and please take this as if we were having a beer. Maybe while its cheap - X99 might not be best choice for trying to sqeeze into a small (and in this case, bad) case :)
    X99 remains king of platforms that refuse to die :)

      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад

    Love the idea of combining an X99 board with a 4060 LP! Two better ventilated slim M-ATX cases that I've seen on AliExpress and Taobao that might be worth a look are the BUG-c1 and the SKTC A10 (both need Flex-ATX PSUs though). Outside of these, the Silverstone Milo ML11 (TFX PSU) might also be an option.

    Keep an eye on Lenovo P520C motherboard I think the market is a little stale now, but I havee seen for as low as 45 USD. Uses LGA2066, also quad channel 2666 ram. Dual NVMe as well. But also a x8 and another x16, with Bifurcation support. Different options for processor, W-2140B seems reasonable, but W-2135 is also good. PSU there is available an FSP 500w for Intel NUC Extreme. You have to add yourself the 5v power and make an extension lead for motherboard. It is Flex ATX size. Seller will accept offer of 30 USD for the power supply (can also find from China modified already to modular PSU)

The mainboard is a MACHINIST X99-K9 and 4x8GB DDR4 ECC RAM, FSP FSP250-50FGBBI(M) 250W Flex-ATX, and cooler; Thermalright AXP120-X67 WHITE ARGB Low-Profile.

    I think Xeon E5-2690V3 would be a better option, in terms of multicore performance is better, and in gaming is a little bit behind the 2667V4. In terms of price 2690V3 cost about 15€, and instead of that motherboard a machinist mr9a costs 52€.

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  5 месяцев назад +1

      I am not an ML / AI expert but one thing I can say for sure - the "infinite" Vega RAM is going to be utterly slow for any serious training, it's much cheaper and way more reasonable to pick old Nvidia Teslas.

    Do you know if any of these boards you've been testing support lower CPU C-States? I'm interested in grabbing one of these older Xeons to build into a home server setup. Mostly to run proxmox with some Windows VMs. It's either this or maybe try one of those erying ES boards.

      @@Miyconst Try something different, they'd be more than fast enough for the tasks. It can be difficult to find secondhand motherboards for good prices. Sure I could get an R5 2600 for $50, the board may be more expensive though. I have an i7-3770k on an AliExpress motherboard, it won't go below C3 and seems to hover around 42-45w at the wall.
      I'm sure a pair of N100 systems might offer comparable performance at a lower TDP, far higher price.
      I do also need to build a dirt-cheap system for my workshop as well. That one is easier, just needs to score above 4000 in multi-core score on CPU-Z validator, GTX 1060 and above.

    Hello, I hope this comment finds you well, I want to make a side machine for server/vm purposes that's not too expensive, I have an x99 board lying around that is a killsre v205, I've gotten turbo unlock working on it since all v201 settings work on it, but afaik the vrm's are not really good for high core high clock cpu's, so I was wondering if a 2630 v3 would require good vrm's or not for the TU (since it has a relatively low power consumption and not many cores). If not which cpu would be good for TU or is it better to go with a high base clock with no TU?
    To explain the use case further, it's not gaming vm's, it's little vm's for single tasks being isolated from each other, which is why I don't really care about the core count that much, but ideally the clocks are fast enough to get the tasks done without drowning or stalling because they take too long, which is why I focus on high clock speeds via turbo unlock or base clocks, that's the ideal scenario.

    I ran into an issue with smart fan on a Chinese X99 board. Fan speed settings in bios would not apply. I was using an aliexpress dual tower cpu cooler, Fans are 4pin. Turned out it was the fans fault, I swapped the fan by an Arctic PWM fan and fan speed settings would apply. Maybe the wiring of the China fan was faulty.

      I had this issue too. I had opened the dispute, and got 50% money back.
      They had connected 3 fans (4-pin plug) in parallel (all 4 wires!), but even when I cut off two control wires, the remaining fan had no PWM.

    • @thefreecase
      @thefreecase 5 месяцев назад

      @@blackbirdestI bought the 2 fan version and I also cut the control wire of the second fan, but no improvement. After all this fuck around and find out, I must admit that I like the dubble tower cooler itself, it's cooling performance is fine. Next time I will buy the one fan version and replace the fan by a proper PWM fan 🤔

    Hello, I want to build a X99 system for multicore performances mostly. Is there any V3 or V4 cpus that can compete with an all core turbo E5 2696v3?

    • @Miyconst
      @Miyconst  4 месяца назад +1

      Not really, E5-2696 V3 with TBU is one of the best but if you need strong performance - go the AM4 route and pick a used R9 3900/3950 or even R7 3700/3800.
