  • This is my overland built jeep cherokee xj. Here is a walk around of everything I have done to the exterior! I show my Baja fiber hood as well as my Notch Customs Xmax Flares. I’m running a 4.5in lift on 35 in tires. I also go over future modifications. Thanks for checking it out!

    Great looking XJ. The most important mod I did to mine was welding on frame stiffeners. The XJs have a reputation for unibody flexing and the stiffeners reduce all that tweaking of the body. Before, I couldn't open or close the rear hatch when the axles were articulated, but now I can open all doors when crossed up. They also let the suspension perform as it should and provide a great place to slide over obstacles without ruining the thin frame. If rock sliders or a cage is in the plan, the stiffeners are a great foundation for those as well. In fact, in my opinion they should be the first mod for any XJ that sees offroad use. I promise you will love the quietness and peace of mind. Just my 2 cents. Take care. Oh yeah...you're son will inherit a great jeep years on down the line.

    one of the perks of having an XJ is you can usually find a used axle set from a few other jeeps. i picked up a built set of built dana 44/8.8 combo from a TJ for 800 bucks. i believe it was a bronco front axle, about stock width. had to cut off the TJ rear mounts and weld up the XJ spring perches. about 1000$ total for 4.88 gears lockers high steer knuckles and the best part is the 1/2 ton pickup truck brakes/disc rear

  • @cobeallen8015
    @cobeallen8015 4 года назад +1

    I put a Ford 8.8 with a Yukon grizzly locker Yukon shafts and man what a change. I did do the artec truss for my Dana 30 I plan to do chromoly shafts when I brake mine but honestly running great. Granted I’m running 33s but I was surprised how nice you can make those Dana 30 for not a bad price 🤘🏼

    • @jcjeeps
      @jcjeeps  4 года назад

      Nice I have looked into an 8.8 but From what I read it doesn’t seem to be much of an upgrade from the 8.25. What do you think? And yea I wish I could just upstage my d30 but I need more strength 😬

    • @offroad8163
      @offroad8163 4 года назад

      Chiming in. That's a great set up and nice xj by the way man, love the front bumper, and the dana 30 in 35s is fine.. very strong axles. And that 8.25 trussed with new axles and disk brakes is fine, could travel the world on that set .

    Your looking good on the styling. Like your hood. So far like what you have done. Careful with your axle swap and suspension up grades. If you go to big and heavy on the upgrades, you will lose the magic dust which makes the XJ such an enjoyable vehicle to own and drive. What made the XJ so good in the 1st place was the combination of right sizing the physical size with the right combination of overall weight and toughness and strength. Adding beefiness and strength adds weight. A lot of it. You need to figure out at what point it’s time to stop and move onto a more heavy duty higher capacity vehicle. Bigger tires, leads to bigger axles, leads to bigger brakes, leads to bigger suspension. And then your adding more gearing and engine. Then transmission and transfer case upgrades. Next thing yo know, your 3400 light weight, nimble maneuverable fun to drive Jeep is now a hippopotamus weighing in at 4900 pounds and your sitting at 6000 pounds ready to go with all your gear on board. All in a body shell designed for a 4500 pound total weight capacity. If you need the capacity of a Toyota Land Cruiser or Chevrolet 3/4 or 1 ton Tahoe or Suburban, then your better off in the long run migrating to that platform to start with and save a lot of expensive upgrades and get a package basically already built to the performance your striving for. Right now, you have 1 little boy. He does not yet take up to much space. When the next little one comes along, your space requirement is going to triple to accommodate their needs. That XJ will suddenly become very small and very cramped. Your calling your Cherokee an over-landing vehicle. Not a rock crawler or stump jumper. Their needs and capabilities are quite different. I suggest you take a look down the road and consider if your going to get where you want to go with an XJ or something else.

    • @jcjeeps
      @jcjeeps  4 года назад +1

      Absolutely, the reason I am sticking to the g2 core 44 axle is because it’s a direct figment so I keep Same steering and width etc. I have looked into many many options as well with switching vehicles and honestly I love this platform I have 2 baby’s and 2 huskies we got out in! The new front axle is to assure that I have the strength I need while on trails with added weight. But I totally understand we’re your coming from because those are all things I have thought about. I previously had a 2016 rubicon 4 door and while yes probably more suitable but the Cherokee works for now and I’m sure I will have another build later on down the road! Thanks for the advice!

    I really like your XJ, man... since it is your everyday car, I think you should keep the rear bumper with the tire carrier, because that extra weight gives the car more stability, so the rear tires are less likely to spin when you are either in the city, on the highway, or off road if needed.

    I don’t even know where to start..... JB conversions SYE with upgraded yolks, Cavfab High clearance crossover steering, Cavfab alpha three link long arms, Iron Man 4 x 4 fab track bar w/ track bar brace, steering box brace, Iron rock off-road frame stiffeners, trail head off road cowl intake, BBK 62 mm throttlebody, performance distributors cap and rotor with live wires and screaming demon coil, I’m totally jealous of your Notch customs fender flares, roof rack and hood but I built my xj the opposite way. My vote for steering upgrade is definitely CAVFAB crossover steering it’s the best on the market. If I were you my next model would be frame stiffeners then long arms....That is after the axle upgrade

    35s is plenty for 90% of trails n the d30 will serve you well. That 4.0 will never over work it. Brace it inner n outer. Chromemoly shafts are stout but hard to find in the bush in case of emergency. I doubt you'll be doing any hard core king of the hammer stuff lol I run 35s w/d30 on my 83 cj7 for 20 yrs. I know you’re wanting to do some actual swaps and some stuff like that but it really depends on what size tire you’re wanting to run. If you’re wanting to stick with 35s I wouldn’t even look at swapping axles you can throw a couple things at the Dana 30 and not have to worry about it at all. Aqua shafts a locker and you’re pretty much set if you’re wanting to stick with 35‘s.

      Dan Hambrick I have honestly thought about just sticking with the Dana 30 but I do typically go pretty hard when wheeling, I go to ejs every year and do some hard trails so I’d like to have the piece of mind of the stronger axle. Also after I regear and put arb locker and chromoly shafts and new ball joints I’m looking at over a few grand when the g2 axle is 3500 complete. But your right it’s been a back and forth decision for sure!

    • @jcjeeps
      @jcjeeps  4 года назад +1

      It is a good amount of work but well worth it and the explorer should have an 8.8 rear which is a great rear axle to put in the xj

  • @ryanaupperlee2662
    @ryanaupperlee2662 4 года назад

    I would take the money and buy a second vhiecle and not DD the xj and just build the d30 and whatever the rear is unless its a d35 or a 27 spline c8.25, i would look for a xj d44 or a ford 8.8 for the rear
