The biggest problems of the fanbases in my opinion:
-Korean fanbase: Being overly possessive of their idols
-International fanbase: Jumping on hate accusations way too easily
Overall there are pros and cons in both, and I really wish we could get some concerts here in Eastern Europe too *cries*

Another thing that i see as a problem in fanbases:
-Kfans: hate to see idols dating and make huge useless scandals over stuff like that.
-International fans: love to see idols dating but make a lot of ships and make idols uncomfortable with each other

Kfans are little too obsessed with Korean beauty standards

Also another problem with the Korean fandom is that they can be VERY xenophobic towards other East Asian idols and even more racist towards non East Asian idols. Not all of them, sure, but a very large portion of them are. Sure, they can tolerate and even love a foreign idol as long as they keep their mouths shut and don't do anything to offend the Korean public, but the moment they do something wrong the Korean fanbase is very quick to turn on them. Remember how they bullied (G)I-dle's Shuhua when she mispronounced some Korean words on performances during Hann era? Or how they harrassed Sana for celebrating her country's new era? Or how they hated Yiren for not kneeling in front of her fans because it goes against her culture? Or how Lisa regularly gets called racial slurs on Korean social media platforms simply because she's the most popular Blackpink member overseas?

Not gonna lie as an international fan I feel like we only exist when they need votes or sales or Need to be high on the billboard becuse all of a sudden we get attention than when it's done with we kinda get ignored and than we get a lot of crap from korean fans whenever we ask for simple things like say hi in English or they dont release shows with subtitles and when we speak up we get yelled at like "how dare you be rude to them they don't need subtitles you learn korian if you want to watch or they dont need to say anything to you) and it is possible to do live subtitles when on live they just don't care too.

I get where you’re coming from but that’s a huge double standard. like you don’t see asians constantly on western artists’ asses for not speaking our native languages. plus, that’s how international kpop fans lived before the whole breakthrough of the kpop scene into western media. They learned the language and generous fans even made English subs for other international fans to enjoy. And if you say it isn’t fair since english is a language like half of the world knows, please think about why it is that way. Society has always been so western centric, here in Asia we’re forced to grow up learning our native language/s AND English especially now in the most recent few decades. It’s a minor inconvenience for y’all at most to just wait for other fans to sub the content you wanna watch so… 🤷‍♀️

I'm glad you brought up the multi-stan. International fans seem to be a lot more comfortable staning many groups but Korean fans pour everything into one group, almost like an obsession, it's one of the reasons you will see some groups that are just super popular in Korea but then these smaller groups just don't seem to be able to get a solid Korean fanbase because they are already stanning another group. I also think with the way the music industry is in the west is why international fans are a lot more accepting of things that Korean fans would find unacceptable because the scandals we deal with in western music ... LOL, some of it is pretty crazy. The whole bullying scandals as well. Things idols did as kids can ruin their careers. It's crazy. I don't see why growing up and making mistakes and learning from them is a bad thing. It boggles my mind. DUI though, is a big NONO for everyone I think. If someone is accepting of that then I dunno ... need your head checked.

Something interesting I've observed with Korean fans is something I've noticed about Japanese idol fans, too: they are RARELY multistans. Being a dedicated fan of multiple groups with multiple biases is looked down upon there, while overseas, this is common and actually encouraged, with people who have a super long list of groups they stan being considered impressive and experienced fans and people who are only into one or two groups being considered newbies or "baby" fans, at least from what I've observed in my experience. In Korea or Japan, if you change biases or start to stan another group besides your ult group, that's considered betraying your bias (or your oshi in Japan). In a western country (I'll use America as an example), your average kpop fan will have at least five different groups they're dedicated to and then some other groups they like but not as much. This is probably part of why nugu groups tend to stay nugu: because Korean fans refuse to put lots of effort into stanning a group of new rookies from a small company when they're already stanning a popular group from a big company. Also, Korean kpop fans and Japanese jpop fans (I'm making this comparison continually because I notice the same behaviors in both fandoms) are more likely to be solo stans than overseas fans are. In the English-speaking kpop online community, being a solo stan (having one bias that you favor over the other members and you exclusively follow that member without giving as much attention to the other members) is looked down on and seen as a sign of a toxic fan, but this is more common among Korean and Japanese idol fans. The opinion of overseas fans on this tends to be that it's OK to have a bias but not at the expense of ignoring or hating the other group members.
Mostly I think international fans tend to be way more accepting and less harsh than Korean fans, but that's mainly because of the cultural differences in how we're raised and how we see celebrities, and just music culture in general. What's frustrating is that sometimes, Korean fans don't see that and expect so much more from international fans and they don't accept us as part of the fandom. I remember an incident with one kpop group's fandom I'm in where a Korean fan took to Twitter to express their anger at how international fans weren't streaming enough and how they were being lazy and obviously didn't care about the group enough, and I think that really highlighted a huge difference in how different cultures see celebrities and music. In Korea and some other Asian countries (specifically Japan), you give your life to your idol. In America and other western countries, your life and your idol are two different things and you prioritize your studies, your family, your mental health, etc. over a singer you don't even know. The priorities are just different. Plus, being an international, non-Korean-speaking fan is hard, and sometimes I get the feeling (and I know other international fans do, too) that Korean fans don't understand and appreciate that because they take so much for granted. They get to go to fansigns, music show performances, concerts, etc. often, and buying albums and merch is easier and cheaper for them. Also, they don't need subtitles because Korean is their mother tongue. However, for many of us overseas fans, this isn't the case. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go to a concert, and we have to travel to another, more major city to do it most of the time. Forget going to a fansign or other event. We often get one chance to even breathe the same air as the group we stan. Overseas shipping for albums and other merch is expensive, and half the time we're broke. And we don't all have the time or motivation to learn Korean. Lots of people don't even speak English, so being able to understand English subtitles isn't always super easy for everyone. Some people are already learning another language or simply don't have the time to learn another alphabet and language, and for some people, kpop is just some music they like to listen to and isn't their main fandom, so they don't have the motivation to learn a WHOLE NEW LANGUAGE. We're doing what we can with what we have and I hope more Korean fans will come to see that and appreciate it.

I agree kfans (chinese, korean and Japanese fans in general) can be a bit harsh but you’re also not recognizing a huge fact that’s been true since before kpop even got recognized in the international market: it’s their loyalty and “obsession” with these groups and members they solo stan that drives a huge part of their career. Idk if you’re aware but a lot of idols and groups get gigs, sponsorships, endorsements, etc. BECAUSE of the kfans and their fan projects. Even just birthday ads go insane for idols in Asian countries like fanbases collect hundreds of thousands just for that single day alone. Kinda hard to do if you’re doing it for multiple groups but that’s just the culture of how things are in the east asian entertainment industry.

@@norabeckwith6893 The thing is, and I’m not saying it’s all Kpop idols, there have been multiple instances of idols using a culturally significant object/song or any other manifestation of a culture or religion and use it as a prop or a way of entertainment. Is it just kpop idols that do this? Of course not! However, there are compilations of many idols doing offensive things that could have them called racist if not for the fact that a huge card that defends them is the fact that Koreans are not always aware of how insensitive their actions can be because of their lack of exposure to these issues.
Basically, not all kpop idols are racist but you can understand where their (the accuser’s) train of thought comes from. I don’t find it cool at all to put kpop idols under the category of being racists just to be clear if the comment didn’t make it obvious enough, but I wanted to put my input on this topic, so I’m sorry if any of this was bothersome 😅

@@norabeckwith6893 Personally, when I’m made aware of any western celebrity drama I do see huge amounts of backlash and I feel like they are more held responsible for their actions because topics like racism are severely discussed among the west and so western celebrities have no excuse for any racial insensitivity as they’re expected to know that already. I do agree that some fans tend to quickly forget a western celebrity’s scandal/controversy or at-least always try to justify their actions when it’s clear as day that those actions can’t be pardoned by the fans that were unaffected by the celebrity’s actions and instead that right should be given to the community that was ACTUALLY affected. Just like Kanye West’s recent controversy for his antisemitic comments that completely devastated his fans that were Jews yet that were trying to be justified by fans of his that have the popular excuse of “-but he did graduation…”
Sadly, the only reason I can think of off of the top off my head as to why western celebrities have their controversies forgotten very quickly is because it is very common nowadays for a celebrity to be outed as racist or any other controversial affiliation in western countries.

And i just seen recently where supposed kfans are attacking hyunjin from stray kids, once again, for a bullying scandal that happened years ago and has been resolved ever since because of the new show “the glory” on netflix. Like from what was proven is that hyunjin and another student got into an altercation because the other student was making fun of his dog. But that was all that happened. And i think it was said to have happened when he was in middle school. Like that was a fight between two students, not bullying. Like netizens need to understand the difference between when something is actually bullying versus just a little fight. And the worst part is that hyunjin has apologized numerous times over it. Even though in my opinion, I don’t think he needed to as he was the one being provoked and it was nowhere near bullying.

I would say that is not the main reason tho. Well idk but minimum not the only one. Bc I've seen that they feel like lied to? And maybe betrayed, when they are dating in secret yet at the same time flirting or such with the fans. So it feels like being played with. I understand their feelings tbh, and many blame the fans but I would say the main culprits are the companies for making them do and act a certain way, creating those para social relationships and obsession, and worse not doing anything to change it bc it was on purpose and they want the money..
Anyways, but yes no matter how they feel it's no justification to throw hate and whatever, keep it to yourself or your friends and later decide if you are going to support them or not when you are calmed down..
Second reason I read, it's that they don't consider it professional, and they don't think they should date bc then they wouldn't concentrate on their job, specially since first years are crucial.
Also that they should keep their private life private, they don't mind but don't want to know, and if they do reveal it, it should be enough years after and when the couple is serious when they dated more than 2 or 3 years, because, and that's a big reason, it would affect the group. And fans (nor the company), want that. And it is the truth bc firstly romantic and/ or se,ual attraction is a big component on stanning someone and therefore the group, so if it comes up they are dating, either they feel jealous or not the same and stop stanning, or even if they don't mind(and I've seen this a lot with Dawn kfans for example), they know or assume it's going to be an scandal and will affect the group reputation and popularity, and it happened, but mainly bc of cube that kicked them out (bc they broke the trust with the company they said lol) when fans actually didn't want that.
And I want to add a third point, and that is that probably the hate comments are from antis from the group or even a member from the group they stan, and the GP, but not the actual fandom..And then it's sheep mentality and bc they think others think that when they don't and issue gets bigger than it would, etc. 🙃

As an international fan, ngl for certain idols sometimes it feels like we aren't part of the fandom in a way. I feel like we are only acknowledged when it comes to international or worldwide voting. Also some Korean fans aren't really accepting of international fans and don't consider them as part of the fandom. An example of this is when international fans are asking for subtitles in a video and some Korean fans would say that we should learn Korean instead of always asking for subtitles.
And there are a lot of differences between Korean and international fans. International fans are more open and accepting of the idols doing things that most Korean stans will find unacceptable. Another thing is Korean fans are overly possessive of the idols, treat them like gods, and like them too much that it starts to look like an obsession, unlike international fans who treat idols like normal people they idolize, they are fine with their idols dating and support them unless there is actually something wrong with the relationship. Most international fans also prioritize their life more than the idols. The downside to international fans is that whenever there is an issue some of them will come to a conclusion too quickly without actually double checking the accusations. Unlike Korean fans who will analyze every sentence and picture before coming to a conclusion. Also the multi-stan thing international fans are most likely fans of multiple groups while Korean fans are really dedicated to only one group. That's why a lot of groups especially new groups are super popular international but barely have Korean fans because a lot of them are already part of another fandom. Sometimes though it's the knets that is really toxic and not the fandom itself.

If you manage to "take over" the korean market the group/artist will be just fine. You can look at TWICE, they're not huge overseas but they managed to be the #1 k-pop group in Japan and the albums sold there are comparable to the ones of the artists who are more popular in the states or uk. There's also dreamcatcher who are not doing incredibly well in the korean market but oversees are actually doing alright (i believe most of their fans are international or a huge chunk of it at least).
There's also a difference between the fans. Korean fans are more strict etc. whilst international fans just listen to the music and support without caring (most of them) about the "controversies" and what "they are supposed to do as an idol or not". International fans are more laid back, don't cancel or take part in the "fan wars" (again, most of them). They also view the members very differently than the korean fans.
I don't know why k-pop hasn't branched out into europe via tour. I feel like the first group that will go in most of europe's capitals will gain a lot of fans in that region.

And ofc everyone knows how most korean fans overreact dating, cursing, or just how the idols look. (I mean ik the kbs is kinda part of their culture but it's so strict and it's just their look, and everyone has a preference, what they think is pretty, and what they think is not. What I'm trying to say is that I don't think kbs should be taken THAT seriously)
And the so called world tours shouldn't be called world tours, only if they are really world tours. Imo MCND did the right thing, they made a Europe tour and an American tour, and I think that's how it should go also whit other continents. (I believe they only went to North America but at least they noticed that Europe exists)

Korean fans and international stans are different first by what they call themselves. Fan vs Stan
Korean fans also leave things alone once proven false. International stans use the "it's my opinion" "they were paid off" "So what. I still don't like them" as an excuse to continuously hate and bully idols. International stans will also believe any rumor told just to jump on a hate train and they'll add extra rumors to it just to keep the hate alive. Should we have a talk about Woojin?
Korean fans have the chance to stalk, and hurt idols. International stans use words to hurt them because they can't do anything else. Let idols move to America while promoting. You'll see false accusations against idols sky rocket
Korean fans are strict because of cultural differences. While international stans are angry, jealous, petty, controlling, mean, aggressive and everything else for the sake of drama and "being woke"
Kpop fans in general are worrying. They'll put their own lives on hold just to worry about what another HUMAN is doing. A lot of them can't function properly if they can't see or hear an idol. They need said idol to be perfect for their fantasy. They need said idol to be perfect because they themselves can't be. It's sad
Kpop has brought out the worst in a lot of people. Only some are aware of this and we're brave enough to admit it
Kpop needs to go back to focusing on Asia only. They'll be just fine with the support from China and Japan. They'll have less drama if they cut the United States off. Trust me

Whereas I-fans have the least bit of sensitivity to actual cultural norms, a deluded sense of morality and feminism and of course the instant cancel culture trend.

I don't necessarily agree with the "possessive" culture of korean fans necessarily as they are just in the same country and are able to support more. There's so much that ifans don't actually understand it's actually a bit incredible, but I'm not surprised. Ifans have this huge bias towards kfans becasue kpop articles always report on knetz because it's just a low-hanging fruit and gets clicks and has now made ifans have a biased opinion against kfans.
I'll tell you all the times I've been to Korea I've met the bad and the good sides. I've unfortunately on accident have befriended sasaengs (thankfully dropped them when I discovered their behavior) but the vast VAST majority of korean fans I've befriended have been the most caring people I've ever met super welcoming too.
A bunch of us set up a fan cafe for supporting a group and one of the girls who was doing the most setup didn't sleep for 3 days. She was still attending broadcasts during promotions and I saw her taking a nap next to me at music bank (since music bank is seated) and I would wake her up when our group came on and she would cheer then nap again. This was all for her planning this cafe and her school work and also attending promotions. Korean fans are extremely dedicated and supportive people they just don't want their idol to have a potentially negative image in the public's eye because that would affect their future after being an idol if they went into acting for example. Koreans think long term. Ifans just don't care which is fine.. but that's the thing they don't care so much about what an idol does that they also don't care about how it would affect them. This is the part that people don't understand.
All in all with that aside though I agree with your points

I agree - and good analysis. FYI: I’m an older kpop fan who grew up during the MTV generation in the US. I became a fan of kpop in 2009 when I randomly came across a music video and was impressed with the choreography and production quality. I’ve followed almost exclusively female groups as they seem more interesting and their performances are more creative and appealing. Some things that still vex me about kpop are the dating ban (for adult idols), the strict beauty standards (some take plastic surgery too far), and the overreaction regarding everything they do or say. It’s ok to be critical, just don’t be psycho. Half these performers are minors who should still be picking their nose in high school - so just chill.

The reason why you don’t see as many artists go to Europe is because of Two big factors: 1.) location-getting there is a lot harder compared to North America and probably with the Ukraine conflict, flying over or near Russia is a no go (it’s still possible to go to Europe from Korea Ofc, but getting there is harder compared to North America or other Asian countries). 2.) visas/touring-since Europe is many smaller countries and yes there is the EU but there’s probably different rules for each country with touring/music visas. Ofc it’s possible (ie blackpink) but it’s a lot harder compared to touring in North America. So agencies have to really commit and put in a lot more work for Europe concerts compared to other countries.

I don't know if this is specifically a difference between international and Korean fans or a different issue, but I've noticed that certain fans are quick to call an idol's treatment disrespectful. Like in the US celebrities get asked about their dating lives and controversies they have had all the time. Sometimes they choose not to talk about those things, but asking the questions is usually not thought of as disrespectful or rude. When kpop idols come to America and get asked the same types of questions it's suddenly seen as disrespectful, rude or xenophobic. The same thing happens sometimes when it comes to jokes. When talk show hosts make jokes or celebrities take part in comedy skits about themselves we all laugh, when it happens with idols it's disrespectful.
I've been wondering about this behavior for a while.

As a European K-pop fan, I know what it’s like to not have any K-pop group come to ur county and if they do they tend to go to the capital and as I live in the other side of the county to the capital city, it’s even harder knowing they are in the county but I can’t see them. Blackpink cane one to my county, had in concert and then left. Nit helping the fact that came in a Wednesday is u could not go see them anyway. It suck’s 😭😭😭

As an international fan i should say korean people haven't global education enough 💀 I think the non korean people are the only one who can see how strict the culture specially beauty standards...i really disgust how young idols got sexualized and also colourism😖

this isn't a Korea thing though?
Also ifans don't even attempt to really learn about Korean culture but will just crucify it without trying to understand it.
I won't disregard some things that Korea does though because the debuting young idols thing has always been weird to me.
You're saying that Koreans shouldn't hold their idols to a standard though to remain professional? If people want to see idols who don't act professional or with tact they can just go look at artists in the west lol. It's just so strange. Ifans will crucify Koreans for wanting their idol to remain in a positive professional image because that is what is good for the longevity of their career far past them being just an idol but if they go into acting afterwards... and ifans by that point will have just moved on to the next new group that shows up. This is why multifandom is way more popular with ifans than kfans.
To say that korean people aren't educated "enough" though is so weird. Maybe all of us ifans should actually try to educate ourselves on Korean culture instead of just not trying to understand it and writing it off and saying it's just bad.. lets not forget that our idols are from that country lol.

KOREAN FANS ARE LIKE TOO MUCH DEDICATED TO KPOP... IT'S LIKE A PART OF THEIR CULTURE... KPOP IS THE WAY(ALONG WITH KDRAMA) KOREA IS PRESENTED TO WORLD....AND WE ALL KNOW HOW IMAGE CONSCIOUS KOREANS ARE....SO, THEY WANT EVERYTHING TO BE PERFECT ABOUT IDOLS....

@@bryce1616 Most idol groups do not have any fanbases outside of Asia. It's only one group that does. And most groups fans outside of Korea are kpop stans not dedicated to one group except that group which is the only one with actual numbers outside of Asia for a reason. Also your side of the fandom is too obsessed with the idols and treat them like the manufactured puppets on stage they are. Which is perpetuated and driven by their companies especially Medium 3. Thank God I don't belong to kpop fandoms like these. In fact I don't consider our fandom a kpop one. Also I do agree with you on idols with no values like Criminal bang but I don't agree on treating them like your personal dolls. They are grown adults and like all other people they need to have a personal life outside of their work like all normal people do. They are not your possessions..And I won't say anything about your beauty standards but to me as an outsider it seems to me that you are ashamed of your own characteristics and culture and also promoting unhealthy body images as a health professional.

As Korean society that more collectivist compared to the west that more individualistic oriented
I know the Korean fandom have really strong solidarity in fandom circle and they get better access to the exclusive fan club
In the other side , the collectivism mentality also breeds a toxic concept of idol belongs to the fans , which makes idol having a difficulty to having an individual rights for themselves such as right for dating or married as they demanded to prioritize public expectation over their individual right (( this also no exception in Japanese entertainment landscape as well ))

It just my opinion but you brought out "international fans" but only using USA flag while other countries fans also consider as international fans. Maybe you could changes it into world or any other symbol, bcs this world not just USA
