Yeah it's very durable but one weakness is certain chemicals will stain the finish, like chain cleaner. You just have to be careful with the rear wheel. Just use soap and water to clean it the plasti dip finish. I never got any chips on the plasti dip finish. Basically, it's a rubber coating. It will protect your wheel from salt and road grime. Many people actually spray their rims on their car with plasti dip in the winter to protect the wheels from salt. It's good stuff!
Because you want the plasti dip to seal around the edge of the rim. if you put tape on the wall of the tire, when you go to pull the tape off it will pull away from the edge of the rim, exactly what you don't want to happen. PD comes off the tire very easy.
You shouldn't mess with the edge of the wheel at all, it's best to leave the edge of the wheel alone and just peel the PD off around the wall of the tire. The reason you do that is b/c you want to ensure the edge of the rim is SEALED on around the edge. If not, the wind will eventually pull up the PD off the edge of the rim. Doing it my way it comes out clean and I put 2500 miles on those wheels with zero issues before I sold my bike. PS- drying time depends on climate and humidity.
I also have a CBR250 and want to dip my rims... But I'm not sure how to get my wheels off, and when they are off, what to do with the bike. Did you have a stand? How easy was it to get the wheels off?
if you want it to look clean, take the wheels off and do it right. Taking the wheels off is pretty easy, just make sure you have a torque wrench when putting the wheels back on.
with your experience having Plastidip.. would you say that it would hold up if i used on my Rear Set and Passenger Peg Sets?... or would it wear off fairly easy?
The "interrupted" technique keeps you from overcoating, believe me you don't want to overspray an area, you'll get air bubbles for sure. I learned that the hard way with the first wheel I did (rear wheel).
thanks brah! gonna get a my first bike soon. its gonna be a red/white cbr and im gonna plastidip the wheels red and then eventually powder coat them. so stoked.
that's the worst thing you can do is use tape or index cards around the edge of the rim, you want the edge to be sealed around the lip of the rim b/c if it it's not just wait and see what happens when the wind drag pulls on the edge over time. If you do it my way the edge of the rim is sealed and you will never incur any problems.
Good idea. How well does the PD hold up to tire irons. If it is damaged from a tire change, do you have to repaint the whole wheel or just touch it up?
I want to plasti- dip the fairings on my bike.Should i add a clear coat so it can last longer? I don't want peeling off every time. By the way, im a fan of your vids. Thanks
thanks, I had this video up but youtube took monetization off of it b/c it had music in it, so I had to re-upload the video but without music this time.
what did you do with the bike while the rims were off? Do you have a video of you dismounting the rims and removing the brakes? sorry brand new to bikes and want to do this mod
Hi, when you say it is durable, does it withstand chemicals such as wheel acid and hard scrubbing?, because I was thinking of doing my wheels, but I commute and get alot of road grime, salt and brake dust mainly during these winter months ( I live in England, so it gets quite heavy). I am basically just worried that it would come off with cleaning/scrubbing. Thanks in advance.
Use electrical tape for curved edges as it doesn't crinkle or fold onto itself and you can stretch it to curve with the tire. Also, if you do 2-3 coats quickly (5 mins at most apart from each other) you can then quickly peal off the tape from the sidewalks so it doesn't peel up from the rim. Check out dipyourcar's how to video on rim spray.
You shouldn't use tape around the side, you'll weaken the strength of the plasti dip around the lip. That's the main reason I created this video, to keep people from putting tape around the edge.
Thank you for the reply, for the sake of that i think i shall be practical and have them painted/powdercoated normally was thinking matt black everything with body panels blaze blue, and blaze blue around the rim of the wheel for a rim tape effect. Thanks once again the help!.
Now, what if you want to have the sides of the spokes silver so the 'star' pattern stands out? Can you use a die grinder with a scotchbrite pad to remove it and the paint but leave the rest of the black?
@CycleCruza How many cans of plasti dip did you use for both wheels? and also-what do you use to keep your bike up while the wheels are off? or do you just set it on the ground?
Blaze yellow... Like Hi Viz rims would be awesome with red reflective tape around the outer edge of the rim. Or even cooler to have hi viz rim with white accents
Hey man, I really really like what you've done here, I am now motivated to do it to my CBR too! Can you tell me how many cans of the black plasti-dip you used?
I don't know, I never got a chance to change my tires on that bike. Even if you have to re-plasti dip them it's not a big deal b/c it's so easy to re-plasti dip them.
How do install the front tire back on without letting the brake caliper touch the rim? Everytime i try to put it back on i chip a piece off the dip. did you have someone pull back the caliper while you put it on or what?
would this work on my wheelchair as its covered in scratches but im not allowed to fully change the could becuase when i got it was blue and has on the paper work what colour it is so if i took it back when i got a new wheelchair they would reconise it wasnt that colour when i first had it now its covered in scraches and everything after i flipped it woopsss how easy will it be to get off would it remove anymore of the paint thats left on my wheelchair thanks
One of the main reasons plasti dip is popular is because it doesn't mess up the paint. It's only a hassle when there are a bunch of holes (some rims have designs that make it a hassle)
yeah but while I'm riding it I want it to look masculine, lol. Red with silver wheels was too feminine for my tastes. It was pretty easy plasti dipping the wheels, the hardest part was taking the rear wheel off and that wasn't too bad after you do it the first time.
How long does that paint last before it starts to flake off as it is exposed to the sun all the time? I need something that will look good for a long, long time.
Don't know, never kept that bike long enough to know but it still looked great when I traded the bike in (forgot to tell the dealership the wheels were platsi dipped. lol SOBs probably thought I had them powder-coated. lol They ripped me off some so it even out. lol)
Good result but the "interupted" technique is not just annoying but it soesn't make any sense from the application perspective. But as i said turned out ok so that's all that matters?
terrible attention to detail, spraying from one angle you wont cover the entire surface of the rim for example if your sitting at the bottom of the wheel the entire time when you tip the wheel upwards the creases will not be painted....
5TRYD4 I don't know I only kept that cbr250r for 5 months. It should last a while though. Many people plasti dip their car rims for winter driving and it seems to hold up fine.
you just made more work for yourself and you compromised the lip of the rip. You WANT overspray b/c it seals the lip of the rim, honestly that is the biggest point of my video. The overspray comes up very easy with a toothpick and peels right off leaving the lip of the rim protected. Much easier and the PD will last longer on the rim.
Yes it's very durable but you can easily scratch it, plasti dip was made for a quick and cheap new look for your vehicle it wasn't made to last years it can last years if you don't peal it or scratch it in any way.
TheBuddylove420 Taping the edge will screw up the seal around the lip of the rim, do it my way and you won't have any problems with the plasti dip coming off. It's much easier my way anyways.

Always use rubbing alcohol. I tried it with vodka, I got drunk did a crap ass job and got arrested pissing in a manhole drain on the side of the road!

Thanks! I thought about the doing the strip but it probably won't stay on the rubber. I'm curious to see how it will work out for you.
Your welcome! I'm glad the video helped!
with your experience having Plastidip.. would you say that it would hold up if i used on my Rear Set and Passenger Peg Sets?... or would it wear off fairly easy?
I wouldn't use on rearsets....

Hello brother, just to be clear the tape needs to expose some of the rim?
That looks great man, I'm thinking about doing this to my super glide.
So, did you do it?
Thanks! I hope it works out for you as well as it did for me. Plasti dip is great stuff.
I probably could have gotten by on two cans but I put like 5 coats on both sides of each wheel. If I ever do it again I would keep it just 3 coats.
Definitely looks better than the silver. Nice job.
that's the worst thing you can do is use tape or index cards around the edge of the rim, you want the edge to be sealed around the lip of the rim b/c if it it's not just wait and see what happens when the wind drag pulls on the edge over time. that stuff is super durable, you can probably even power wash plastidipped wheels with a problem.

Thanks
Eduardo Quintanar Don't use that clearcoat crap, that was a total waste of money, just stick to the plasti dip. Thanks for watching!
Just apply more coats. Itll make the overall coating stronger and last longer
Great video. You posted this in 2012. You mentioned that you plasti dipped your heat sheild. How did it hold up since then?
+jfsj 108739 It held up fine.
Wow, awesome. And how about the water conditions? How do you clean the lub that the chain throw off the rear rim?
will it come off when installing a new tire... looks really good btw
no but they have a liquid rubber spray that can stop leaks, google it.
thanks, I had this video up but youtube took monetization off of it b/c it had music in it, so I had to re-upload the video but without music this time.
what did you do with the bike while the rims were off? Do you have a video of you dismounting the rims and removing the brakes? sorry brand new to bikes and want to do this mod
Sorry I don't own that bike anymore, it will tell you how to remove the wheels in the manual for this bike.
when you go get a tire change do you think the machine they use to change it will tear the plastidip? at the edge

I'm about to do this with the red tire strip. thanks! great video!!
Anyone else watch this video and thought... cycle cruza is WHITE?!
...for years I totally thought you were a black dude 😂
probably but you can always peel it off and do it again and have brand new-looking rims.
Thanks for the video! I was thinking of powdercoating my wheels but after seeing this I think I'll Plastidip my 06' 599. Cheers!
Looks good bro... Deff gave the bike a more aggressive look,
So how long does plasti dip coatings last on a motorcycle wheel?
How many cans of plasti dip did you need? I'm gonna do the same thing to my CBR
@CycleCruza How many cans of plasti dip did you use for both wheels? and also-what do you use to keep your bike up while the wheels are off? or do you just set it on the ground?
Cool!
My favorite new commentator. I ain't tryna get set up for a fucked up day. LOL
would this work on my wheelchair as its covered in scratches but im not allowed to fully change the could becuase when i got it was blue and has on the paper work what colour it is so if i took it back when i got a new wheelchair they would reconise it wasnt that colour when i first had it now its covered in scraches and everything after i flipped it woopsss how easy will it be to get off would it remove anymore of the paint thats left on my wheelchair thanks
Will plasti dipp come of if we clean or wash the wheels?
I never changed the tire, I traded my bike in plasti dipped wheels and all. I don't know if changing the tire will effect it. Call and ask.
How long does that paint last before it starts to flake off as it is exposed to the sun all the time? I need something that will look good for a long, long time.
Don't know, never kept that bike long enough to know but it still looked great when I traded the bike in (forgot to tell the dealership the wheels were platsi dipped. lol SOBs probably thought I had them powder-coated. lol They ripped me off some so it even out. lol)
How does it resist to cleaning up the rear wheel from the chain grease/wax?
If i spray my rims white they will ofcourse get dirt on em. does the dip colour flake off if i wash it? (sorry for my english) :P Nice video!
No. I run my truck through powerwashes without any plastidip coming off
yeah you don't really need anything, like you said plasti dip doesn't stick to the tire.
That'll work too! Even better!
is there a way to just mask off everything and keep the wheel on?
Sounds good!
How do you wash them once they have been plasti-dipped?
Can you make a veido on how to remove the windshield?? I wanna dip it!
Wow those yellow rims sure look nice
where did you get the plasti dip from for so cheap?
will it come off when i clean the wheels?
To save time and money. It takes 4 hours to remove and install a new windscreen on the cbr250r.
god job but i would still prefer electroplating the rims. Much better finish and far more durable. Did it on my Duke 200 and it turned out amazing.
how many can did it take for 2 rims?
@CycleCruza so would this work to stop leaks in my roof's water drain?
Thanks for sharing this nice video. :)
how many bottles do yo need to paint front and back rims bro?
+Muhammad Iqbal probs about 2/3 of 1 at most
Good result but the "interupted" technique is not just annoying but it soesn't make any sense from the application perspective. But as i said turned out ok so that's all that matters?
that's the only way to do it clean, otherwise the brake disc is in the way.
you shouldn't need anymore than 2 cans.
Should I use plasti dip cans to paint my fairing? It will hold on?
Ariel gym I wouldn't recommend it,
Ariel gym Just buy some new ones, then keep your old fairing set for when you sell the bike.
terrible attention to detail, spraying from one angle you wont cover the entire surface of the rim for example if your sitting at the bottom of the wheel the entire time when you tip the wheel upwards the creases will not be painted....
+Sarah Heath Thanks, Capt Obvious. Anyone that has an ounce of common sense will figure that out and adjust the angle of the spray can accordingly.
oh ok, yeah plasti dip is nothing like regular paint. You are essentially spraying liquid rubber.
that's right
how long would it stick, and would it be damaged if you are cleaning the rims?
Great video by the way
CycleCruza looks AWESOME bro! but how long will it last?? Looks to me like winter would tear that shit apart.
5TRYD4 I don't know I only kept that cbr250r for 5 months. It should last a while though. Many people plasti dip their car rims for winter driving and it seems to hold up fine.
CycleCruza
I was gonna get my Vulcan powder coated but this seems easy and I save money
thank you bro t is really helpful and your bike is awesom
2 cans should be fine. Use motorcycle stands to keep the bike up.....
B/c that's more work and it's not necessary.
Thanks a lot for the video. Very helpful!
you lucked out on this one with very little can movement you should shake at least every other time you release the spray
how many cans of plasti dip is required to cover up 2 wheels fully?
2 cans
CycleCruza Thank you for answering so fast :D love your vids :P
How well does it hold up to heat for exaust or motor
Zero problems when I had the heat shield plasti dipped on my former cbr250r.
Put index cards between the wheel and tire
all very well because your using a dark paint so it wont show on the tires so much anyway
you just made more work for yourself and you compromised the lip of the rip. You WANT overspray b/c it seals the lip of the rim, honestly that is the biggest point of my video. The overspray comes up very easy with a toothpick and peels right off leaving the lip of the rim protected. Much easier and the PD will last longer on the rim.
you ca buy this at home depot and many local hadrware stores (for me anyways)
Only one Homer Simpson moment. The tire weight will need to be moved when you get a new tire.
2 cans of PD should be good enough.
yes it will.... no be prepared to redip your rims after the tire is changed
$6 a can?!! The cheapest I could find in the uk is £15!
The cost of living is cheaper in the U.S.
noob question i suppose but why not just remove the tire?
You sound like that guy from were the millers the one that says no regrets
The Home Depot
does the plasti dip hold in rain?
Yes
Yes it's very durable but you can easily scratch it, plasti dip was made for a quick and cheap new look for your vehicle it wasn't made to last years it can last years if you don't peal it or scratch it in any way.
You are suppost to paint the outside of the windscreen.
Home Depot has the glossifier now...
Awesome
Why don't u tape off the side wall of the tire. Rather then pealing it off the tire.
TheBuddylove420 Taping the edge will screw up the seal around the lip of the rim, do it my way and you won't have any problems with the plasti dip coming off. It's much easier my way anyways.
