You might need to turn up the volume to hear the difference in the noise testing, they were all pretty quiet so it is hard to hear

its slightly confusing with GPU's .. what's more important VRAM or CUDA cores ?
Suggestion: You should get a sensor that mesures sound by dB for the sound tests, to get more "concrete" results.

Running 2 GTX980Ti Strix in SLI and your video confirms my thoughts and that is wait until at least the next Gen cards to upgrade again as mine run at 1360 Boost 7600 Clock quite happily.

EVGA for customer support. MSI and Asus are pretty equivalent, but Asus is too expensive for what you get imo. I would just get an EVGA. Or a Palit (because they have good coolers as well) if you don't care about customer support.

Selling them and upgrading will probably be less expensive than paying so much for the power they waste.
Pretty much called it when it came to the difference of the 980TI and the 1080. Basically 0-13 FPS difference when it mattered and only was 20+ when the 980TI was already getting 100+ frames. Knew the 980TI would of been a hard beast to beat. Great video and cannot wait to see the RX480 review.

Hey Kev, i think it would be really awesome if you did a general explanation video on GPU specs. Like why is some GPU better/faster than the other based on specs and what generally are the most important numbers when GPU specs are considered. You keep having hard time explaining that in a short time in these showdown videos, then you skip it and it remains unexplained. So make it simple, explain all the specs and meanings of it in one video so everyone can keep up with you talking about them in these other videos! It is just my recommendation. Good luck and keep being awesome!

The only new feature that I see useful is the FastSync feature which I can wait for till they release a more powerful card that is considered a tangible upgrade like may a GTX 1080 Ti

😊 No I'm not frustrated at all, and sure the GTX 1080 is faster than the GTX 980 Ti, but is it worth it, I know hardwarecanucks and it's a decent site indeed but you can't compare results like that simply because it's conducted on different systems, I saw more than one comparison between the two and the one was closest to my system was the one of Tech of Tomorrow and the results were indeed in the margin of 10-20% at most, he is on a Z97 system with 4790K same as mine and at the end his final conclusion was that the upgrade from the GTX 980 Ti to the GTX 1080 is not worthy, better wait for the next GP102 whatever that will be, check his review Tech of Tomorrow and by the way he also did a review of the same card you mentioned along with the reference cards
Nice vid, but I'm looking forward to that RX 480 vid tho. I might sell my R9 380 to my friend (he is in dear need of a GPU) and buy the 480 when it comes out!

overclocked my 980ti stable at 1502 core 4000 memory, happy with it:)
I'm a Strix owner, built my PC in March this year, without knowing that Nvidia were going to be releasing a new card, as you can imagine I was upset. Then I saw the benchmarks across lots of reviews, wait for the 1080ti . I've just bought a second 980ti Strix for £345 (original price well over £670) 2 of these cards will eat anything you throw at it. If you have the money by all means get the 1080, if not look on Amazon and other sites for the strix/oc edition for half the price and basically the same performance

In my old GTX 780 Ti vs GTX 980 benchmarking there was a similar difference of around 10fps, for example with the two gigabyte models of 780ti & 980 in the old tomb raider, the 780ti got 99.2fps and the 980 got 111.2fps, quite interesting
I just upgraded from Windforce 780 Ti to MSI Gaming X GTX 1080. The Ti did great until the end, even at 1440p.
Hmm not the generational jump I'd heard we might get with the change to 16nm. Shame really.

Quico Gil Ah yes. But what I mean is that if this reflects the same improvement as 780ti to 980, which were both 28nm, to see that level of improvement happen again 980ti to 1080 even though it's gone 28nm to 16nm seems a little underwhelming. But I take your point on the cooler.
I know the 1080 has that VR simultaneous projection thing which must be useful. If it were usable with nVidia 3D Vision I'd be very interested indeed.

Fun fact: The total memory bandwith of the 1080 is 5% less than on the 980ti.
Just talking raw specs, the 1080 on average is only 11% better than the 980ti. Not sure what to make of that.
Now I know what to make from that: Calculating the average hardware improvements can be seen as a guide to how much better it will perform in software.
Rise of the Tombraider is not really DX12, I would say it is DX11.4 or something.
Nice compassion i bought a new gtx 1060 6gb that was dead on arrival so i got the money back and on the same day i did i found a used gtx 980 ti for less the money i paid for the 1060 and this far i love the card !

you should update the vid by adding annotation that 1000 series reference cards support GPU boost 3.0 which OCes the card to max limit rendering manual OC useless thus the founders edition of 1080 matches the non-reference cards in performance thus this review is the other way around as its unfair to 980 Ti as it operates at 1430 Mhz and can be OCed to 1500+ as max OC which gets around additional 4-5 frames, 980 Ti performance per clock is alot better than 1080 because it has more CUDA cores and wider memory bus.
check 980 Ti owners club, people who OCed their cards more than 1500 Mhz beat the 1080, some even Oced it to 1600 on water cooling, the same cannot be said on all 1000 series cards.
1080 runs hot and you need to OC massively it to get ANY decent gains over a 980 ti.

Does anyone remember IF the GTX 780TI was better than GTX 970 when GTX 970 first came out? BECAUSE NOW THE GTX 970 IS BETTER THAN GTX 780TI,by small margin. GTX 980TI seems to be better than GTX 1070 and TOTTTALY not worth it going for GTX 1080. Just grab a cheap GTX 980TI,right?
I don't know if the 970 would be better now as the difference even back then was quite large, for example, with the Gigabyte 780ti vs Gigabyte 970 in Heaven the 780ti got 66fps & the 970 got 55.3fps and in tomb raider the 780ti got 99.2fps and the 970 got 82.8fps, those are large margins to overcome with just drivers.

If you have a 980ti 980 970 don't even sweat it. If you can afford a $699 4K g-sync monitor, buy this.
gtx 980 ti and 1070 are now the 1440p kings. Takes a 1080oc to do 4k ultra, maybe even a 1080 ti...

Majority of reviews are based on best possible results for 1080 and worst of 980Ti, which is a joke. Welcome to capitalism child

MSI 980Ti factory overclocked, on air, I guess silicon lottery. It is perfect for 3440x1440 gaming and everything else.
no no no no no......unless you want nvidia sucking your bank account and soul dry,no. 1080 is no better than 980ti,... the vid showed a 2db diff on acoustics!!!!!!!!!! 5-10 fps in most games!!!!!!! seriously im not a fan of either camp red or green, but im hanging out for amd polaris........ the new rx480, as much horsepower as a r9 390x but for 200 dollars?????? errr fkk yeah!!!!!
