I owned a Hyundai IONIQ 5 Project 45 version for just over 3 years. I’ve driven it from Dorset to the Highlands of Scotland without any problems. It’s a really comfortable long range cruiser. In fact I liked it so much I’ve just swopped it for the 2025 IONIQ 5, with a bigger battery, a rear windscreen wiper, matrix LED headlights, vision roof and digital wing ‘mirrors’. Hyundai IONIQ 5 definitely gets my vote. BTW the graphics and menus are now much better….!!

I looked at the Model Y moving from a Kia E Niro +4 but ride was too firm. Tried the Model 3 Highland and that won me over. So easy to drive and still easy to get into. For efficiency and charging costs Tesla is a winner. I used Apple Car Play completely with my Kia but have found most needs are easily fulfilled by the Tesla apps. Charging is much better using the Tesla maps for Navigation, it pulls in Apple's Music and Podcasts, brings up my messages, it is great and not missed Apple Car Play.
I have owned Audi's and last one I had was a Q5, but the Tesla is so much better IMO.

We've done 60k kms in our Ioniq 5. Great car and as you say, the best for 3 in the back which we need with 3 kids. Charges so fast 200-230 kWh from 5%-65%. My normal 25%-80% charge on the motorway takes 15 mins. 7 year unlimited km warranty is a big plus. Very quiet in the cabin for the price. Downsides...I personally find the ride a bit crashy on bad roads. We have a 2021 model, maybe they made some changes. No rear wiper can be annoying - fortunately we live somewhere with no snow and not much rain. We test drive the MY (twice), the Q4 and the iX3 (twice). Happy The Ioniq 5 was the right pick for our use case.

I've owned a couple of BMW X3s in the past and they were great cars to drive with good build quality, but I never wanted an iX3 EV, because there was no AWD option, as chassis design is based around ICE technology, hence poor utilisation of space, especially under the bonnet. I've driven Audis, build quality is excellent, but I was always put-off from buying as the options list read like war and peace. My first EV was top spec Hyundai Kona EV, it was a great practical car, only let down by the software, and it highlighted to me at the time how poor the public charging network was compared with Tesla's, though this has improved over the past couple of years. I currently own a 2022 Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD. This was the model year which came with significant suspension and ride quality improvements and a rear parcel shelf. It's a fantastic car to drive. The performance is excellent, the sat nav works great, I love the car's software, and it feels like you are getting a new car every time you receive a major software update when new functionality is added, like smart summon last week, and fully adaptive headlights six months prior. And of course, the Tesla supercharger network is excellent and so easy to use. Once you've had a Tesla you never want to go back to a legacy auto manufacturer's product offering. Tesla ownership experience along with the phone app / key / summon remote control is great. Next week, I take delivery of a 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range AWD, again with enhanced auto pilot as per my Model Y. Part exchanging my Model Y and purchasing a new Model 3 to replace it is all managed seamlessly via the App with step-by-step instructions for the end-to-end process.

We’ve done 38k in our pre facelift iX3. Excellent ride and handling and pretty quick. Plenty of space for 3 kids in the back (6,12&15), but the usb ports in the back have been trashed as that is where the middle seat passenger ends up putting their feet. Boot is good for our dog (Husky), even with some luggage. 220 miles in winter, 240 in summer. The only things the facelift model has that ours hasn’t is a heated steering wheel and ‘on the go’ battery preconditioning. All models are well specced. If fitted, models with towbar can tow 750kg. The boot can also be opened by waving your foot under the rear bumper.

Having spent a couple of years or so watching the electric car market, and this channel in particular, I bought an Ioniq 5 namsan 73 plate. It came down to this or the Enyaq 85 awd.
The Skoda was too expensive for the spec. I always liked the Tesla Y but having almost everything on touch screen put me off a bit and my son now has one - the seats are not so supportive and the suspension is harsh. I really like the Hyundai, so smooth. Getting used to using cruise control around town (tried the limiter but performance takes a holiday). Sometimes just use the cruise (on/off) and paddles. Digital mirrors are really great once to you get used to them. Lousy turning circle is about the only thing I have a problem with. Great videos...

I have an Ioniq 5 2024 Ultimate RWD. Richard’s comments are bang on on all accounts. Efficiency great on lower speed but does suffer on the motorway, especially cold wintery and windy days. Accessibility was the thing for us. Elderly parents who walk with sticks are our main passengers and they can get in and out of front and back seat easily. Charge speed is great and V2L is useful. Thinking of changing our other car for a used Model Y

Hi Richard, greetings from Oxford. Thanks for another great video on BEVs. Your information is much better than many of those ‘fluffy’ automotive journalists. I still have my 2019 BMW i3 which I bought new, still happy with the car. I would criticise the overly harsh ride, and of course range and DC charging speeds are not great by modern BEV standards, but overall it makes for a great daily commuter and city car.

What a great video thanks! I love these sorts of comparisons. Ive had an iX3 for nearly 3 years and I still find it epic. It's not class leading in lots of areas but to be in and drive is just the best for me. I've always enjoyed BMWs way of building cars and this is no exception. The adaptive suspension is standard which helps I'm sure. It's also been pretty faultless so far (only 30k miles though). And like all electric cars so cheap to run if you can charge at home. Not selling mine as I still enjoy it too much!

Another great video - I'm guilty of assuming most people have been following the EV market as long as I have, and I tend to forget there are loads of people who are "EV curious" and looking for comprehensive overviews like this. I own a '22 Mach-E and while I love 90% of my car, I wish it charged a bit faster and had a bit longer range, but that's to be expected from the standard 70kWh battery pack I chose. And I love the door handles. Again, another great, informative video - well done!

Thank you for the great review Richard. Very balanced and informative. I have had Ioniq 5 RWD large battery for just over 3 years, 46,000 miles. No problems with it. Pros - Ride comfort, especially on long drives, v good efficiency in town/A & B roads (have averaged 3.9 KWH since new), good space, controllable re-gen and quick charging speed. Cons - Poor turning circle, software/screen could be better and some hard plastics in interior.

Had an ix3 for nearly 3 years - very comfortable, quiet, reasonable efficiency for a large car - 240 miles each way to Cornwall this week, averaged 3.1m/kwh sticking to 70mph in the cold, but usually manage 3.6-3.8 in the summer. Made use of the lifton supercharger each way and charged at a full 150kw (at least for a while). Good practical size and shape for lugggage and a dog - takes 2 bicycle boxes ok. Not had any issues so far and no loss in range noted yet either. Cost effective servicing every 2 years especially with a servicing package. Still on original tyres after 25000 miles. Also prefer the normal car appearance with real buttons and even indicator stalks! Good strong regen in B mode and on bigger roads the “autopilot’ equivalent works well and is relaxing - not so much on smaller roads. No regrets on buying and intend to keep for a good few years

Another one for the iX3! 👍
As you mentioned, it has a nice ride - a good balance between a "sporty" drive that will let you feel car's reactions, and a "comfort" drive that is not too fidgety lile in Tesla (I have both and can compare).
The app in BMW is also great, in some parts even better than Tesla: it has a full protocol of your rides and charges, no extra app required. It would also let you start charging on a public charher directly from the same app.
It has a very nice head up display, as you mentioned, but also a 360° camera, a digital car key that can be used on the phone, so that you don't need to have an extra key on you, etc.
The BMW is probably the only one from the "traditional" car vendors that is coming close to Tesla on the software side. I really like the iX3!

I got a Tesla Model 3 LR in Dec 2021, wonderful efficient car. So easy to drive having knackered joints and fibro myalgia. Traded up to a 24 Tesla Model Y LR as I now have a mobility scooter and the model 3 boot was getting annoying getting the scooter in and out. In the Y I only have to remove the seat back of the scooter to then lift it in. The still got lots space. Miss the ultra efficiency of the model 3 but the Y is not far behind. The model Y having higher seating position makes getting in and out so much easier.

27:22 My favourite is the white one at the back. If it's a relatively simple RWD Std version, so much the better as the efficiency is best, even the pre-2024 suspension is fine and the performance is still extremely vivid. Plus you get all the Tesla good bits. I think it's Tesla's best all-round car. I see someone has mentioned the standard loading banana box for the northern hemisphere. Contact Mr Bjorn Nyland of Norway for cardboard dimensions. He did it and made it popular first. Hence, we all kind of get the sense of loading space from him. 😇

Have owned the model Y since May 2022. It is without a doubt one of the most practical cars I have ever owned and any shortfalls it has are really relatively minor. Other than the actual car itself which you can't change, the amount of software updates and ease of updates since I have had it is proof of how far ahead Tesla is against the competitors. They have introduced some truly useful features to improve it. That said it would be nice if the adaptive cruise control was sorted out to deal with change of speeds better. A lot is made of the ride comfort and yes on less than perfect roads it is jiggly but then it is also a car that does 0-60 in 5 seconds and onto stupid speeds so it can't handle like a jelly. For the most part I find it very quiet and relaxing to drive and the driving position for me at least is ideal. I have also hired model Ys on holiday in the states and it is at its best carrying four passengers including driver. Five is a bit tight. Four full 23.5kg cases can fit in the boot (just) but you also have the frunk and the understorage in the boot so on holiday we made full use of that for hand luggage as well. It will be interesting to see how the model Y evolves with the anticipated and expected new version perhaps next year. They appear to have done a nice job with the model 3 but my hope would be that they reverse the idea on having no gear and indicator stalks. That's a solution to a problem that was never there. Great car though and very pleased with it.

Owned an EV now for 2 years. I always think with EV's, in terms of choosing what to buy/lease, one of the really big questions to ask is what sort of driving are you likely to be doing, and how often? Plus, (in terms of making the switch to electric at all), can you charge at home? We are a family of 4, plus a dog. Often away for UK based weekends here and there, so relatively long trips maybe 4 or 5 times per year. Plus I also considered the practicality and running costs. Because of this I chose the Model Y Tesla. Yes, the software is pretty unique and very good (still even vs the BYD). It's quick, great to drive - bit firm on the ride. For me though the 3 big selling points were 1) Supercharger network - it's hard to overstate how brilliantly this integrates into the car's navigation system. If you need an on journey charge, it's seamless and very easy. Any anxiety I've had is because I've been an idiot and tried to push on past the charger recommended to the next one. 2) There are zero running costs beyond, tyres every 30,000 miles, a £20, 2 year air filter change that you do yourself, and the brakes checked every 3 years. 3) Practicality - until the EV9, there was nothing to compare for the boot space - even the iX. You look at the outside of the Y, and it's mad how much stuff you can get in there. We load up with the dog, luggage, 2 kids. Trips away, all sorted. This just meant the car fitted our needs, and my laziness of figuring out charging stops. There are better cars on the market than the Tesla - the EV6 is terrific I think and not mentioned here, the iX is a lovely place to sit, and if you can lease it (to avoid the depreciation), the Taycan estate is truly magnificent. But the Tesla fitted our needs. You just need to figure out what fits yours.

I was talking about the Ioniq5 as that is what Richard was mentioning in relation to rear wipers. I own an EV6 GT and totally agree that the EV6 doesn’t need a wiper. Never been an issue for me. However would have liked a rear camera washer for sure. I also felt that the old one looks better. However I was recently at my local dealer and WoW the new EV6 GT line in this crayon grey colour looks stunning in real life and much better than what the images and pictures show. Plus after going through the specs, there is actually more upgrades than you think, especially the infotainment and the Meridian sound system improvements. Not to mention a bigger battery and the new steering wheel does make the interior feel more up market. Plus the piano black has virtually gone and it has wireless CarPlay. 🙏🏻. So I for one will be looking to upgrade to the new GT when it hits. Especially as it will almost replicate the ioniq5N in power and gear shifting noises.

    • @JohnCap523
      @JohnCap523 Месяц назад

@ I know there’s software and interior changes but you said “facelift”.
For me, the only things I would love to see improved on EV6 is put speed in the middle of the driver display rather than upper left where the steering wheel blocks it (I could do that in my 22 Tucson PHEV), the manual door handles on the Wind trim suck, and I hate the wheels on most every Asian car (I replaced mine). Otherwise, a great EV. My son has a top of the line Mach-E and he’s had nothing but problems with it, aside from the awful thermals that throttle acceleration and charging. And any honest Tesla owner who has experienced good EVs openly admits how crappy Teslas really are. Beyond that, I’m not a fan of European cars so I’d not even consider a BMW or Audi EV.

Five cars reviewed in the time it takes other RUclipsrs to cover just one! Great stuff. 👍🙂
My Model Y's eminently practical for my own needs. I was initially disappointed with the narrowness of the tailgate opening, but was able to get my bike in there on holiday last year by removing the front wheel and lowering a (straight) handlebar into one of the rear bins. The cabin's a nice place to be, the touchscreen display's lovely, the ride's OK, the range and acceleration are confidence-inspiring, the one-pedal driving's a treat. The turning circle's not great, but you develop the skills to deal with it. The over-the-air software updates are a brilliant idea and occasionally worthwhile. The Traffic-Aware Cruise Control's good at not driving into the car in front, but is slow to pick up speed afterwards. Autosteer's a complete waste of time. The hesitations and sudden loud panicky false alarms from the "safety" systems are the pits. The matrix headlights' auto dipping is a distracting light show, but a useful last resort if I neglect to dip them myself. Only one of the five USB ports can actually communicate with a USB stick and it's hidden away in the glove box and already used for the dashcam and Sentry Mode. But despite the gripes, I've yet to see a car I prefer and have no thought of changing it! 🙂

When I was deciding what car to go for last year, my top 3 picks were: Ioniq5, Model3 and Enyaq. Other ones I wouldn’t touch or were too expensive. Model3 ended up on 3rd place due to poor build quality compared to other two and hard ride. Enyaq was my runner up due to slower charging speed. The winner was Ioniq5, good charging speed and charging curve, good build quality, V2L, looks😍, decent mi/kWh. Tesla charging network isn’t better than the rest. Any Service station on Motorways is 20 to 30 miles apart and has plenty high powered chargers. The only difference is price and handshake time (5 seconds vs 20 seconds). Every EV has pros and cons, it’s for every individual to find that sweet spot when choosing an EV.

Someone else mentioned the front storage which I purchased from Germany, is a good addition. Range? You have to be really careful to eke 250 miles out of it and if you do, you’ll be down to electron fumes! Very cold day? 180 miles is more accurate for range. We had the rear wheel drive Q4. It was quite efficient. 250 miles at 70mph and typically 300 miles in mixed driving. The routing software looked great but was unreliable. A number of times showed we would arrive with more charge than we started with - without charging! The charging speed was awful. The early plates have no battery preconditioning and rarely hit 90Kw peak at below 10% SOC rather than the quoted 130Kw. Boot height was great for the dogs (2*GSD) but they could only lay down like 2 sardines laying across the boot (Smaller dogs are available)

I got the model Y because they were doing a great PCH deal with 15,000 free charging miles - which will actually end up being closer to 20,000 miles.
It's not quite as wide inside but the seats down load length is long which lets me get 2 E Bikes in with just the front wheels off - little things can be important to different people.
The box test is fun but if you look at the overall storage in the MY, I bet it's up there. The deep wells on each side of the load floor are very handy for plants and the like
I don't think the ride is too harsh at all but I wish it still had USS rather than relying on Tesla Vision. I don't care what people say, Tesla Vision is NOT as good as USS for all weather parking in tight UK roads and car parks. Makes me smile when I get the "parking assistant degraded" message when it's dark and raining - I mean who needs accurate parking sensors when it's dark and raining! lol.
When the stalks go, that will probably mean I don't get another Y and I think the Audi would be the one I go for.

Tesla Model Y 74 plate. Love the colour midnight cherry red.
    Dislikes:
    1) seats aren’t big enough. 😩 I’m a large man who struggles to buy clothes in the U.K. However, whenever I go to USA, I find it easy to buy clothes that fit me. As the Tesla is an American car, why are the seats soo small! 😋
    2) windscreen wipers push water off the windscreen down the side of the car predominantly on the drivers window so I can’t see my wing mirror 😡, and they also flick water from the blade in front of the driver, onto the windscreen in front of the passenger! 😡
    3) autopilot is great but when I change lanes and engage autopilot too soon, why does it have to violently steer me across into the next lane and then violently lurch back to the centre of the lane so quickly. It could coast into lane with no stress?!
    4) Also, when in traffic, autopilot will slow to a stop, but then violently accelerate when the car in front moves off, only for the system to brake aggressively when it realises it is closing in on the car in front !!
    Likes:
    5) I love the sound system. It is soo immersive. There is a sound bar across the width of the windscreen, plus 13 other speakers.
    6) the entertainment system is incredible. I was stuck behind an accident in a road closure for an hour. I watched RUclips videos in surround sound the whole time with the heating on! What’s the phrase: ‘Time flies’!!🤩
    7) the size of the model y is big, but you don’t feel like it’s a big car when driving.
    8) single pedal driving just makes soo much sense.😅
    9) charging at home makes soo much sense @ £0.07/kw is soooo cheap!
    10) getting into a car that is already at the required temperature 😮 particularly when surrounded by frozen cars.
    11) I used your referral code so get money off my car whilst you also received Tesla credit!!

Thanks for the nice roundup of the slightly larger EVs. I have a M3 and can say the minimalist interior is over rated and some of the tech glitches with the Tesla are long over due to be fixed and seemingly continue to be ignored. i agree with the comments you have on most of these cars. I would say the one I am most attracted to is the Ioniq 5 with the 800v architecture and open design and attractive good looks. Not really a fan of those I5 displays, but at least there is a driver display and a HUD. They desperately need to update their infotainment and nav software. At least it has Carplay/Android Auto, but you can't use the built in nav for preconditioning and Carplay at the same time. I saw there is a hack to get around that limitation however. I saw on the Ioniq 9 it appears there is a new infotainment center coming and new software. Hopefully that fixes a lot of these problems and is used in all the vehicles in their lineup. But if in the market for a used car I would be most tempted by the I5. Would love to see Hyundai come out with a "wagon" version of this car for just a little more room in the back.

Of these, I’ve driven the Model Y, and the Q4 e-Tron. Based on this video, I’d probably pick the iX3. But one point about the Q4 e-tron is that the plastics inside are very hard, and I found it extremely uncomfortable to drive as a result. I’m referring to the plastics used on top of the door where I sometimes lean my arm, on the armrest itself, and worst of all, in the narrow footwell, where I felt like there was always a hard plastic against my leg that made driving it very uncomfortable. Of course this may not apply to others. But it’s definitely worth looking out for in a long test drive if you’re considering this otherwise very nice car. Ironically, at the time, it was a loaner for my then regular aka Q8 e-tron, which was the polar opposite. The Q8 or 2nd hand e-tron of the same size is super comfortable with soft plastics, leather etc everywhere, and a high quality feel to everything. Its biggest let down is its range. But other than that, it’s an amazing EV.

Having driven a Tesla Y for a few days, it’s not a car for small towns or city centres. Difficult to park, in particular for the models without parking sensors, large turning point, inferior build quality, inside and sometimes outside, and while the infotainment is best in class, the lack of any central indicator or hud is annoying. Like BMW in general, but the new generation infotainment is way better, the Mustang is interesting but I haven’t yet tested it.

Not really looking for a range monster so none of these meet my needs but I enjoyed the review. Tesla really does have the best setup when it comes to the app, software, route planning, customization and charging infrastructure. That’s a ton. But. Every single thing you need to do is in the screen. Texting and driving is dangerous but controlling every function of your device from an iPad is fine? The minimalist interior presents as cheap to me. Sitting in the seat feels like you’re sitting at a very plain desk with a terminal on it so you can crank out your daily reports. There’s nothing to look at, twist, rotate or click like you have in almost every other vehicle. They are however very efficient and provide really good performance. I think the efficiency and performance are directly related to the weight of the device and the fact that there’s nothing in it. I like the look of the Mach E in GT trim and while not roomy the seats feel really good and supportive. I’m also not a fan of the screen in that vehicle either. It doesn’t look like it’s well integrated. While most everyone prefers the ionic5 I prefer the styling of the EV6 with the exception of the ionic5 N. If that vehicle had a heads up display and powered seats with memory I’d definitely consider adding that to the garage. If I were to pick any EV that has the most of what I’m looking for it would be the GV70 Electrified. The Audi and BMW don’t really speak to me.
