  • This clip is from our series "Interview with Dr. Walter Martin on Cults".
This clip answers the question: What about Ellen G. White, one of the leaders of the Seventh-day Adventists, was she guilty of plagiarism in her writings? Did she utter false prophecies? Are the Seventh-day Adventists part of the cults? What makes the difference?

We are not under Law, but under Grace. Keeping a holy day, whether it be Saturday or Sunday is anathema to God. "..let no man judge you in meat, or drink, or of a holy day, or of the Sabbath day..". It is law, or it is grace. You cannot mix the two. We live today in the dispensation of Grace. God's law program was in Ages Past. God's program today is Grace without the works of the law.

Every SDA should read the following:
"Seventh-day Adventism Renounced" by D. M. Canright, 1914 for a thorough biblical rebuttal of Adventist teachings and insight to EGW background history.
I also highly recommend folk read The Four Major Cults: Christian Science, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism, Seventh-day Adventism by Anthony A. Hoekema

I didn't get any response from anyone showing me that Ellen White was a false prophet and she goes against the scripture. The teachings are based on the Bible not on her books. In fact SHE'S saying that her writing is not above the scriptures. Any mature adult with half a brain can read her books and scrutinise next to the bible, if it's against scriptures than don't take in consideration!

And one more thing, I came out of the Christian fundamental church. Basically, I was baptist in my background. Let me tell you, as one who believes in Christ and the Advent movement, I have had a much richer, more abundant life than I ever had before. BY the way - Seventh day = Sabbath, Advent means we believe in Christs return. We are not "SDA". We are Seventh Day Adventists!

God will judge Ellen White and not man, so as me. I do not worship E.G.White or Pope or anyone on earth. Professor E.G.White was a writer, a human writer. If her writings do not go against the Bible I would rather burn them but I understand the Bible clearly after reading some of the E.G.W writings. Now, you tell me which writer does better on biblical matters than E.G.W. Is there is any. I never come across any prolific writer and by our modern standard, she could be a professor in that field. After all, I believe in God, not any human.

Pls check the 28 Fundamental Beliefs of SDA and let me know if there is a teaching that is NOT Bible-based. There is NO single EGW teaching in the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. She is NOT above the Bible and not ranking equal to Jesus. During her lifetime she wrote more than 5,000 periodical articles and over 40 books. As of 2015 more than 100 White titles are available in English, including compilations from her 100,000 pages of manuscript. Her writings are translated to 140 languages.

Being from an Adventist background, I'm well aware of the Adventist position on the Sabbath & how IMPORTANT Sabbath keeping is for the remnant & end time Christians. But I'm at a loss to understand WHY the New Testament never brings it out with great clarity so it was left to Ellen White to do it. The NT is the Bible & EGW is NOT! Also with such a secular/anti-religion agenda in America now & a weak Catholic Church, I can't see how Sunday law could get passed by Democrats, atheists, liberals etc

The interviewee is WOEFULLY incorrect. For instance his Statement about Desmond Ford. Yes,DF was let go of his position at the General Conference, however, the interviewee states that he is not Adventist anymore. This is patently FALSE. He is still a member, and he still keeps the Sabbath. So, how does that help his argument? The differences between the GC and DF were doctrinal teachings having nothing to do with the foundational tenets of Adventism - keep The Commandments and Faith in Jesus.

also, brother, please do not think that adventists do not come to Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. in fact, we always need Jesus every time for guidance. also without Him our sins will never be forgiven.

    Okay then answer me this:
In the Bible, Jesus himself described in graphic detail the reality of eternal torment in Hell where the fire is never quenched and the worm does not die.
Now contrary to the Bible, Ellen White teaches the unbiblical doctrine of soul-sleep, which claims that there is no such place as Hell.
Well...one of them's got to be wrong. So answer me this: WHO WAS WRONG? JESUS CHRIST?? OR ELLEN WHITE???

Desmond Ford was right about the doctrine of the sanctuary and the doctrine of 1844 not being supported using the Historicist method of interpretation. However the Seventh day Adventist church does not use that same method of interpretation this argument is invalid. It would be like saying to an Evangelical christian that the Antichrist is not a man who will rule for 7 years in the future because, according to the Preterist method of interpretation, the Antichrist was the Greek king Antiochus Epiphanes. Because evangelical Christians teach that the Antichrist wasn't Antiochus Epiphanes, but rather a future individual, then all evangelicals are wrong and should be considered a cult. This argument is invalid because most evangelical denominations use futurism as their method of interpretation and not Preterism. The same applies to Seventh day Adventists. You can not accuse them based on this reasoning or you end up caught in your own snare.

      a. Ellen White believed in the certainty of false prophets:
      (1) They will arise (2SM 392).
      (2) There will be many false prophets and many will be deceived (2SM 72, 392).
      (3) As the end approaches, their numbers will increase, both in the U.S.A. and in other countries (RH, 25 May 1905; 2SM 72; Ev 610).
      (4) Many of these false prophets will be genuinely sincere, not at all a hoax and a fraud (2SM 72).
      A. The alleged disclaimer
      1. On Sabbath, 1 October 1904, while preaching in the Battle Creek Tabernacle to an audience estimated at 2,500 to 3,000 people, and the next day, Sunday, speaking to about 2,000 people, she made a remark to the effect that she had never claimed to be a prophet.
      C. The clarification
      1. She stated that she had never claimed the title of prophet.
      2. But, equally important, she never disclaimed the role of prophet!
      a. "Some have stumbled over the fact that I said I did not claim to be a prophet, and they have asked, Why is this?
"I have had no claims to make, only that I am instructed that I am the Lord's messenger.... Early in my work I was asked several times, Are you a prophet? I have ever responded, "I am the Lord's messenger." I know that many have called me a prophet, but I have made no claim to this title. My Saviour declared me to be His messenger. "Your work," He instructed me, "is to bear My word. Strange things will arise; and in your youth I set you apart to bear the message to the erring ones, to carry the word before unbelievers, and with pen and voice to reprove from the Word actions that are not right. Exhort from the Word. I will make My Word open to you.... My spirit and My power shall be with you.
""Be not afraid of men, for My shield will protect you. It is not you that speaketh; it is the Lord that giveth the messages of warning and reproof. Never deviate from the truth under any circumstances. Give the light I shall give you. The messages for these last days shall be written in books, and shall stand immortalized, to testify against those who have once rejoiced in the light, but who have been led to give it up because of the seductive influences of evil."" (Ms. 63, 29 June 1906, published in RH, 26 July 1906, pp. 8, 9, and later in 1SM 31-36.)

THE BIBLE 📚ONLY, not Ellen White
Ellen G. White and "The Bible and the Bible Only"
🤔Do Seventh-day Adventists believe that the writings of Ellen G. White are EQUAL to, or an ADDITION TO, the Scriptures? If the Bible is all-sufficient, why do we need Ellen White's writings?
👉Seventh-day Adventists DO NOT place Ellen White's writings on the SAME LEVEL as Scripture. "The Holy Scriptures stand alone, the unique standard by which her and all other writings MUST BE JUDGED and to which they must be subject" (Seventh-day Adventists Believe . . . , p. 227). Another way of framing this question is to ask why the church should need any of the promised gifts of the Holy Spirit. Ellen White answered this question in the Introduction to her book The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan:
"In His word, God has committed to men the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are to be accepted as an authoritative, infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the revealer of doctrines, and the test of experience. "Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness; that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16, 17, R.V.).
"Yet the fact that God has revealed His will to men through His Word, has not rendered needless the continued presence and guiding of the Holy Spirit. On the contrary, the Spirit was promised by our Saviour, to open the Word to His servants, to illuminate and apply its teachings. And since it was the Spirit of God that inspired the Bible, it is impossible that the teaching of the Spirit should ever be contrary to that of the Word.
"The Spirit was not given--nor can it ever be bestowed--to supersede the Bible; for the Scriptures explicitly state that the Word of God is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. . . .
"In harmony with the Word of God, His Spirit was to continue its work throughout the period of the gospel dispensation. During the ages while the Scriptures of both the Old and the New Testament were being given, the Holy Spirit did not cease to communicate light to individual minds, apart from the revelations to be embodied in the Sacred Canon. The Bible itself relates how, through the Holy Spirit, men received warning, reproof, counsel, and instruction, in matters in no way relating to the giving of the Scriptures. And mention is made of prophets in different ages, of whose utterances nothing is recorded. In like manner, after the close of the canon of the Scripture, the Holy Spirit was still to continue its work, to enlighten, warn, and comfort the children of God" (The Great Controversy, pp. vii, viii).
      Pls READ MORE:
      whiteestate.org/legacy/issues-faq-egw-html/
✔️✔️✔️Ellen White herself NEVER CLAIMED the title prophetess, but referred to herself as God’s messenger. She did not, however, correct those who referred to her as prophetess. Her testimonies to the Church were so extensive that all people will find content that concerns them. If accepted, this counsel will bring about that change of character, which God intends for all His children. Ellen White wrote this:
"I said that I DID NOT claim to be a prophetess. I have not stood before the people claiming this title, though many called me thus. I have been instructed to say, ‘I am God’s messenger, sent to bear a message of reproof to the erring and of encouragement to the meek and lowly.’ With pen and with voice, I am to bear the messages given me. The word given me is, ‘You are faithfully to reprove those who would mar the faith of the people of God. Write out the things which I shall give you, that they may stand as a witness to the truth till the end of time (Review and Herald, January 26, 1905)."
      True prophet glorifies God
      FALSE PROPHET glorifies self

we are allowed to judge those who are inside the church and people who claim to be Christians.

A cult is usually defined with the following three thoughts
    1. Denial of sola scriptura. They believe in new light, or teachings of some modern day prophets, and hold their writings in high authority, much to that of the bible. Many of these groups create their own bible versions(like jehovah witnesses)
    2. Denial of the divinity of Jesus Christ
    3. They teach salvation by works, and not by faith
Cults will usually have one or all of these features.

Brother, i do not know what you heard but i think you are misled about the church. we are saved through the GRACE of Jesus through FAITH. brother you cannot call yourself "faithful" if you continue on sinning. that is why we aknowledge our need for Jesus for us to become faithful in him and that we can be like him. because of our faith we can call Him our savior and that if we have sinned and ask for forgiveness we will be forgiven. the texts are right and we have nothing against that.

SDA CULT members talk with a forked tongue which contradicts themselves over and over. One minute SDA CULT members admit that they have not perfectly stopped sinning, but then when you ask them, "DO you admit you continue to sin and continue being a sinner and continue breaking God's law and 10 Commandments?", they run and hide, insult you, and desperately try to change topics and they cannot bring themselves to admit that they break God's Law because they believe they are lost if they do so!

Martin discovered, not all professing "SDA" believe the same doctrines, individual members may differ in their beliefs. Dear Ones,
Ellen White stated that all Christians should go to the Word of God first. She said she is a lesser light promoting the pure word of God, the greater light. Read the books The Great Controversy and Early Writings. Access to them can be found at the ellenwhiteestate period organization.

The other person who was saying she was plagiarizing was w former secretary who spent time in a mental hospital and later recanted what she said.
So please, tell me who she plagiarized regarding the vision of NYC? These books were long in print and no one had really taken notice of this vision before and when we read it, we were shocked, but not really, because we already knew she was inspired. She herself was fallible, but the Holy Spirit is infallible.

I said that when John got around to listed God's commands which he mentions in this epistles & Revelation, he did so in 1 John 3:23 when he wrote" And this is His command; to believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and to love one another as He commanded". So that is TWO! Loving our neighbor as we love ourselves is the one I can't seem to keep. Especially neighbors who are rude and jerks. I work with a couple like that. Though he was aware that she was critical of the Catholic church & religion, he still held her writings favorably. Tell me, are you automatically contrary to anything Ellen White? I was baptized when I was 27 y.o. in 1977. I did not hear of EGW til after that. Prophets of the Bible plagiarized from other prophets of the Bible, too. That's what Nelson was talking about. Are they any less prophets of God? He brings out some very good points. And I also have have struggles with some of her writings. But, the *majority* of the writings is fantastic. Do I throw it all out? And others have asked, How can you believe a female? That just blows me away. And 1 Tim 4 does not preach against vegetarianism -- that's a stretch. There's so much more to talk about. Hang in there.

I lik you brother you've got wonderful faith, one thing bible prophets did not plagiarize...as in taking others writing and saying that it's yours. Many times when one used the work of another they said for example, Jesus quoting Isiah, but always mentioning it was from him, even though we know Christ inspired him to write those things. Step to Christ is still one of my favorite books, but she has to many other controversial writings, prophecies that never happened, and writings that are not biblical (shut door and investigative judgment). Btw I know 1 tim4 doesn't speak against vegen, what I was saying is that it's against those who teach eating meat is wrong. If u don't mind I would like to know what it means to you. God Bless

Paul said "as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord...to be away from the body and at home with the Lord."(2 Cor 5:6-8) Of course our bodies are in the grave, they shall be raised and united with us again at the ressurection. Paul also said that to die was gain, why? Because it meant to " to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far".(Phil 1:21-23) Yes the FINAL Judgement is at the End, yet there is a Judgement reserved upons ones death.(Hebrews 9:27)

I know nobody who keeps Sunday. seems the biggest deal with both Ancherburg and Walter Martin is the fact that those who oppose the doctrines of the SDA church are put out of the church. I would like to know whether people such as pastors or scholars or just any individual in the churches they belong to were believing and telling others that they don't believe the teachings of their churches or abide by their doctrines. I wonder if they would be put out of their churches too. If I were a 7th Day Sabbath believer and also did not believe what Walter Martins interpretations of his church were.......would I be allowed to teach and preach to his congregation? I doubt it for sure. Did not Lucifer teach against God in heaven for long enough time that more than a third of the angels believed in him and not God. Did not God thrust them out of heaven down to the earth and let their beliefs reveal themselves which has taken nearly 7000 years. It is not some wrong that those who do not believe in the doctrines of churches they subscribe to are put out of the church. This has always been the case from churches today all the way back to heaven itself. Why make some nefarious banter about that point if its not to demean and degrade another church which they themselves do also. Hypocrites.

Limited paperback edition, 46th print, April 1992, page 460, the author says Adventists have little Scriptural justification for their Sabbatarianism. I wonder if Martin, in his 20 years of researching cults, asked any Jews for their opinion. Since that flavor of GOD worship is not deemed a cult, that opinion is not important. The definition of cult status, Martin claims, is partly due to Female worship. Catholic Mary worship is not included because Martin does not list the Church Universal as a cult. The Cube of Saturn, or Islam, in its roots, goes to domestic helpers cleaning the grounds of a certain goddess. NO mention of that in the four pages condemning that flavor.

I have found legalists wil always wrest Romans 7 entirely out of context. Paul clearly shows that we are no longer married to the old husband defined by law but to the new covenant husband Christ, defined by the spirit of grace. By trying to be married to Christ and to the Law at the same time they are committing spiritual adultery. This shows that they really do not understand either law OR grace--their purpose and their application. They are thus fallen from grace and still in their sins

That verse is about the SDA church? What IS your understanding of the gospel? In the 1957 book "Seventh-Day Adventists Answer Questions on Doctrine" it says salvation is by grace alone though faith alone apart from works & keeping the law & the SDA's agree w/ all the major protestant denominations. And good works & obedience to the moral law is the FRUIT of one that HAS been saved by grace alone. I know that many "traditional" Adventists didn't like that book but that's what it said.

1 John 3:23 takes the opportunity to explain what he (John) means when he speaks about God's commandments: "And this is His command, to believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and to love one another as He commanded". This says NOTHING about the Sabbath. And does this indicate what John means in Revelation when he wrote "keep the commandments of God"? The New Testaments either assumes Sabbath keeping or does not require it for gentile converts as it certainly never stresses Sabbath keeping.

Keeping the law perfectly means that you do NOT sin! At all. Not even pride or the slightest hint of jealously. That you love God with ALL your mind and you neighbor as much as you love yourself & your child. The New Testament teaches no such thing. Martin Luther or D.L. Moody never found that in the NT! Keeping the Sabbath is not commanded either for gentile converts. Paul wrote not to judge one on the Sabbath or new moons or eating meat etc. One man esteems one day, another holds all days alike
