What If Les Claypool 🐷 Became Metallica Bassist Instead Of Jason Newsted 🐺

- 1986 was both a triumphal and tragic year for Metallica: Master of Puppets and Cliff Burton's death. And so happened first (out of two ever) Metallica bass auditions, when Jason Newsted joined the band, being the only bassist who matched all criteria. But what if he didn't show up or failed the audition? Who'd replace Cliff Burton? There was one really special guy, and James Hetfiled said he was "too good" for them. Of course, it's Les Claypool, who later got famous with Primus. So let's imagine what if Les Claypool became Metallica new bassist after Cliff?

Hi Andriy.......... Notification Gang
Damn, when are you gonna make an Anthrax or Death Magnetic
Andriy, have you listened to primus cover of the thing that should not be?
Great video.... James and Lars are good politician s ... There is a reason.why dave mustaine hates lars
I’m very happy les didn’t make it mainly cause that would not fit at all
Remember when David Ellefson almost joined Metallica
Not quite almost, but there was such a talk
Andriy Vasylenko that’s what it was okay now I remember thank you
@@AndriyVasylenko Why didn't I heard anything about it?
@@tieukhavu8832 Where can we find some information?
@@TheMetallicaTVHS Ask Andriy. The information with Elefson is also new to me
Les Claypool is one of the best bassists ever. Hearing him in Metallica woulda either been a blessing or a curse. Glad he got his own thing going and Metallica stayed Metallica
It would have been 'Blursed'
That's right.
Just look at "metal head to head".. with Billy Sheehan and Marco Mendoza. Two pure bass geniusses, in their own rights with a different styles, nonetheless with respect towards eachother.
Imagine if Les Claypool was in Metallica. It would go something like this:
Searchiiiiin' boing-skap-a-biddly-diddly-doddly-pong-ping-pang-bonk-a-doink SEEK AND DESTROY!!!
Lol
Searchiiiiinnnnnnn
Yeeeaaaaahhhhh
LOL! That is true.
But we got:
"Searchiiiiiiin'..... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!1"
Metallica wouldn't have been Metallica.
Primus wouldn't have been.
THIS is the thing that should not be.
There needs to be a video about Ron McGoveney.
Andriy, don't skip Govniy.
It must a full interview. We don't know much of Ron. So it'd be best if he tells it himself, instead me pouring all the made up crap
@@AndriyVasylenko You think you'd do anything about Frank Lloyd, their first guitarist ever? There's a couple interviews floating around, he's a cool guy, hope I get to meet him one day.
@@HOSTGANGENT I want to interview everyone who ever was with Metallica, so yeah
@@AndriyVasylenko Best of luck to that, frrrrrrriend. Hope you're doing okay during this pandemic.
I think the "Claytallica" situation is a perfect example of how talent doesn't automatically fit anywhere. In the same way Lars wouldn't fit in any other band, Claypool would not have fit in well with Metallica. He's probably the most gifted bass player of all time, but his style was just too funky. He might have fit in the Red Hot Chili Peppers or even Rage Against the Machine, but Metallica was on a whole other spectrum.
That being said, I'd love to hear Metallica cover "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver."
yeeeeeeeeeeeee he he he heeeeeeeeeee by james?
A slice of ham ”Heeeeeey hey hey hey hey heyyy”
Les is too good for RHCP. Les is what Flea tries so hard to be. Also, please, don't say that about Big Brown Beaver, the bass would be burried in the mix and they would butcher such a great song. Also, Lars can't fit anywhere, he can't even count and keep a steady rythm
Nothing against Robert, but I feel like that about him. His home is Suicidal/Infectious. He could be at home in Fishbone, with his former bandmate Rocky George.
@@SLAYER.APO.VOLO. I actually think Les might be too busy for RHCP.
i’d honestly pay good money to hear metallica with les claypool on bass
Joel Curry damn same
Damn right
Well I’ve got chloroform and a lot of free time
There is a guy on RUclips that plays Metallica songs in les style. Just type in if les claypool played for Metallica. It's funny
Play the mashup Eye of the Hamburger Train! it's FREE!

Metallica would've gone through alternative metal but it wouldn't be as bluesy/artsy as it is. Kirk+Lars were mostly responsible for the softer creative direction
dave cant play proper lead guitar for anything not thrash metal
no way thats too "Risk"y dude
ight imma head out
still would've been better than risk, but dave with short hair is scarier than anything
@@stedmangg LOL.

That reminds me of lars driving behind their tour bus going
*HEY DO YOU NEED A DRUMMER HEYYY*
Without Jason, we wouldn't have my all time favorite Metallica tune, "Blackened". I should watch the whole video before I comment...
Constable 1976 me too, man. can’t live a world without that song
What other songs did Jason write?
@@Candleinchains My friend of misery and Where the wild things are. I won't say all of both, but definitely the most distinctive parts of them.
And Jason should have been credited more on Load & Reload
Jason was to good for Metallica
I read somewhere that before Cliff died, James and him were gonna replace Lars after the Puppets tour. If that's true, that could be a fun video idea?
Imagined if they fired Lars and he somehow ended up in Megadeth
@@KopfTrommel “so umm, Dave. About when I umm Fired you...”
Lars was an absolute animal on the justice tour.
Thank God they didn't because Lars is perfect for the band, especially on AJFA.
@@duffbeer9202 ehhh, I don't know about that. Lets not forget the fact that AJFA's drums had to be stitched together because Lars couldn't keep up or play them correctly (if I recall correctly)
Les Claypool did play in a Thrash Metal band called Blind Illusion!
Check out their 1988 release "The Sane Asylum", it has him on it!
Sometimes I imagine James + Dave + Cliff + literally any other drummer in the world...
Imagine someone like Nick Menza propelling the band!
Lombardo!
Gar was a God, though... and I'm happy that the World wound up with Peace Sells.
And Justice for Claypool wouldn't happen. No way Lars could mute Les' bass playing.
Les would have muted Lars Drums instead. :D
I wouldn't want les in a thrash metal band, it doesn't work.
@@dumbr2098 Look into Blind Illusion. Les played bass in their first album The Sane Asylum. Great stuff.
Just because Les made it big later in Primus does NOT mean he would have had any clout joining Metallica. That’s just plain wrong and not how shit works when one joins a signed, established band. If he had joined Metallica, he would have just shut up and played bass like a good boy, or been sent down the line. Fact.
@@JCDwyer well I Mean Jason came a Lot more to the for-front later on becuse of his backup vocals. I think Les Would have done the same
There is probably some parallel dimension where cliff is still alive and probably dave mustaine is still there in metallica and exodus is in the big 4.
That means Paul Baloff is still in Exodus, and Zetro is still in Testament, so where is Chuck Billy?
What if Dimebag Darrel and Vinnie Paul were in Megadeth? Just the thought of Dave Mustaine and Dimebag in the same band is insane!
Dime: beautiful solo
Dave: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I hate government
I'm glad that didn't happen.
Then it would be Tom Araya. The perfect bass player for Justice
Hehe true
Tom sits too loud in the mix for justice ;)
I suggest someone who actually plays their own bass tracks
Mr. Bungle is the perfect example of combination of great bassist and guitarist. I’m not mentioning drummer and singer that are very talented. It’s almost like super band of some kind
Nice video! Before 'Primus' Les had a band called 'Blind Illusion' or something like that which was a thrash/heavy metal act with strong prog influences, so I guess at that time (1986) he might have fit in perfectly. Fortunately, he decided to unfold his weirdness in Primus (I'm a big fan of both bands).
Hey please make if dimebag joined megadeth
That would be weird, but cool.
@@laoude7890 he had to do it, but he refused because Vinnie couldn't join
you should check out Blind Illusion, it's a technical thrash band with 2 future Primus members one of which is an ex-Possessed member, Les Claypool plays bass on the first album
Thanks for suggestion!
The album was even produced by Kirk, hope you like it!
@@Hoxie69 Thanks for the heads up...I really liked the first two songs so far. I never heard of these guys.
@@DBSG1976 they're pretty underrated, great band

Noice, I play bass and I like Jason Newsted a lot. Flotsam and Jetsam (Doomsday for the Deceiver is a kickass album), Metallica, Papa Wheelie, Echobrain (The Echobrain self titled debut album is amazing), Voivod, Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band, Newsted and the Chophouse Band are cool. Jason Newsted is an awesome bass player and musician.
Les Claypool is an amazing bass player. Primus is cool.
Other than that, cool:).
Much respect to you, JTJ.. I love Jason Newsted's style and abilities as well. I have much appreciate and respect for him. He is way underrated and heavily criticized. Being compared to Cliff is BS because Jason is his own musical prodigy. I'm not knocking Cliff, we all know Cliff was awesome; but people fail to see how good Jason is because they keep putting him in Cliff's shadow. I'd like to see people look at Jason and say: "wow; he too is phenomenal!"
I too love Jason Newsted he was not Cliff but he held the band with his aggressive bass playing, strong backing vocals and stage presence. Jason was perfect for Metallica style of Music. I miss Jason in Metallica. Jason has been my Idol for bass playing and defined my style of playing aggressively bass. 😀
6:27 great now that’s my favorite picture of all time
You could imagine it went something like Blind Illusion, Les Claypool's thrash band from the Bay Area, especially the sound on "The Sane Asylum".

Primus actually got me into metal and most importantly playing bass. To Defy the Laws of Tradition was THE song.
It's my favorite piece primus did too. I'm gonna learn it someday.
...And #TeleGang for All
Duuuude, u doing Les’ voice, I laughed so hard I had tears streaming down my face. Fuggin Classico man haha
Your impression of Les Claypool towards the end of the video was pure gold.
we needed this, thank you very much
Nice topic, I think one thing in particular is pretty interesting: the clash between the interview Les gave for the Metallica doc and the one that he did about himself. You know, the "I wept. Like a little girl" v. "It's bullshit. They thought I was a weirdo".
What I think is that maybe he was kind of persuaded to say that by either the management or the production, because the two interviews definitely struggle with each other.
Primus also have a cover of 'The Thing that Should Not Be' off the Rhinoplasty EP and it is awesome, well worth a listen. Also, Les' first band, Blind Illusion is a great heavy metal band (he was not the band leader though) and I do believe Kirk Hammet worked with them at one point... maybe.
Been told about that in the comments :) I'll check out, thanks for suggestion anyway!
@@AndriyVasylenko no worries, awesome video!
A video about my two favorite bass players? Oh yeah Andriy, you know the way to my heart ;)
02:17 I'm the only one, who thinks that Les is better than Flea? I mean both of them are legends, but... You know what I'm talking about.
Flea should not be top 10
Les is like five musicians in a bassist's body, of course he's better
@@AndriyVasylenko Now that's what I was talking about :D \m/
Starve Harris should have been on that list
You're not alone. Flea is amazing but Claypool is better.
I'd definitely love to see more what if/alternate timeline videos like this for sure. It's always fun to speculate with stuff like this.
Great video bro 👊!!! Could you play your version of some metallica tune with les claypool style? Just an idea 🤠
I'm good only at slapping my wife's butt
@@AndriyVasylenko Nice one! Can we see her? /w\/w\
I think the perfect bassist for Metallica is...
Andy McBunker
Cliff burton
@@almostliterally593 oh trust me, my suggestion is even better ;)
And what about Joey Vera? As far as I know, they invited him too into Metallica, but he wanted to stay in Armored Saint. I think he would be a great choice.
You need to make a video about Bob Rock being Metallica's third bass player (4th if you count Mcgovney). He recorded bass with Metallica and played live bass with Metallica before Rob joined.
"He was too good" meaning "He would've outshined us"
I don't think he meant it like that. I think he was politely saying that he's a great player but he didn't fit. Cliff was easily "too good" for them.
He wasn't being in any way sympathetic towards Cliffs passing at the time...nuff said
Andriy’s eyebrows are sharper than my intelligence
well, claypol had his chance in metal. just check out "the sane asylum" (1988) by his band Blind Illusion. it's brilliant.
Still, I'm so glad it didn't happen. Otherwise, we would have missed out on Primus' bizarre masterpiece, Pork Soda, with songs like DMV and Bob.
He probably would’ve stayed in Flotsam and Jetsam, to be honest, I wish he’d write and record with them, at least a song or two. F&J is such a killer band.
FUCKING JASON YWAAAAA this guys inpires me so much
Great video! Big vibes from Costa Rica!! The claypool Lennon delirium it's a great band! Brings something different. I am sure Metallica could've been way different! But history was written and Jason was stunnin
No mention of Blind Illusion? There's pretty much what Les would have done if he got the Metallica gig. Good basslines. Fit the music. Nothing flashy though.
Was going to mention Blind Illusion, good example of how Les made his style work with thrash.
That Isley brothers joke always gets me lmao classic stark
Imagine how good Flotsam and Jetsam would have become with Jason Newsted still the main songwriter. Doomsday for the Deceiver was awesome.
for going off an idea of what it’d sound like, Primus also did a cover of The Thing That Should Not Be on Rhinoplasty
Check out the Primus cover of The Thing That Should Not Be off of the Rhinoplasty album
I am very surprised that you didn't bring up the primus cover of the thing that should not be.
Claypool would have taken the band in a very “weird” direction.
Probably into a Thrash Funk Prog route.
Nice reference to too many puppies :)
We need a video on Robert, and his amazing bass playing and contributions to riffs on death magnetic!!!
Jason Newsted is so underrated :(
Good thing we have "the thing that shouldnt be" covered by primus
Very cool... Thank you friend 😎
If Metallica has said yes to Les Claypool I wouldn't play bass or just play bass as fast as I can. I would be less motivated. Les Claypool is such a big inspiration to me, I love his skills and his weird band.
You probably would’ve been able to hear Claypools’ bass on the And Justice For All
Find out on Eye of the Hamburger Train
This is the 1st time I heard andriy talk about les claypool.
James played on Les's AntiPop album.
wait, rlly? which track tell me plss
@@seflw9666 Eclectic Electric
If Les joined, that would maybe have meant no The Sane Asylum by Blind Illusion where Les played before Primus, and that would be a loss, the bass sound in this album is spinechilling and highlights bass like no other metal band except Primus.
Fun fact: Burton was the bass player in FNM drummer Mike Bordin's fisrt band EZ-Street, also featuring FNM golden era guitarist Jim Martin. Bordin has also collaborated with Primus (posse vocals on Los Bastardos and John the Fisherman, drums on some obscure track).
Hetfield played on a track on Primus' Antipop. But I can't remember which one, now. I think it was "Eclectic Electric"
Lars definitely wouldn’t mute his bass on Justice if they made that.
Telegang!
GANG GANG
Its not Metallica without Jason
Its just Tallica
If you want to hear a collaboration of Metallica’s and Primus’s styles, there was a track on the Primus album Antipop that was guest produced by James Hetfield called Eclectic Electric. It still leans more toward Primus’s sound, but you can hear inklings of Metallica in it.
I think it's time for a new "garage days revisited/garage inc." type album... Would love to hear 'tallica take on some of the greatest tunes of the last 20+ years and work their magic on them.
I'd like the scenario of what if Cliff was still alive. Or I wonder what things be like if Metallica got another bassist other than Les Claypool, maybe someone like Steve DiGiorgio.
hey Andriy✨this was a nice video and now i have a question...you included videos of James talkimg about (i guess) Jason...where can i find them (or this video)? Greetings from Germany🤘🏻
I wonder what Justice would sound like with Les' slap-and-pop funk style?
9:43 ROFL 😂😂😂
Greetings from Poland 😉
Great video. I like Primus. I think too that Les' skills would be too much for Metallica...
I agree with with you (and also with Les Claypool himself) as to why this wouldn't work, as cool as is on paper. When people wonder "what if [person] played for [band] instead of [other person]?", they tend to think of how those artists are now and what that fusion would be, but earlier in their careers, they'd be at different points artistically and personality-wise. So when we wonder what it would be like if Les played for Metallica instead of Jason, we imagine a Primus/Metallica hybrid, when that probably wouldn't have been the case as you said. Still, I'd love to see them collaborate now. Maybe not a whole album because that might backfire (see Lulu), but maybe something like bringing Les on live and have him play the bass part for "Master of Puppets" in his style or something like that.
Primus covered The Thing That Should Not Be (Album Rhinoplasty) and James Hetfield played with Primus on Eclectic Electric (Album Antipop).
Awesome vid, Mr Vasylenko....I've often wondered what could have been if they(James n Lars) offered Les the position...he is too good, even if Les himself doesnt believe that lol
Don't forget Primus' cover of The Thing That Should not Be.
I did forget
Blind Illusion- The Sane Asylum
Thrash metal band with Les & Ler pre-primus. Look it up.
Look up Blind Illusion’s The Sane Asylum album. Les Claypool’s bass playing on that cd would be a better glimpse into what metalica would have sounded like Had they chose Les over Jason!
THAT'S a scary thought!! What if is better than Oh, MY GOD!! And wishing that it wasn't so what was is what was and we don't have to wonder now. Simply be glad that things turned out the way that they did. Could you imagine Metallica doing "Winona's Big Brown Beaver"? ????
After St. Anger Metallica learned: "Don't f**k with sound"
Death Magnetic: "Am I a joke to you!!?"
I was hoping for some Metallica alternative takes with you playing what Les might have done... c'mon -- give us some "...And Claypool For All"...
that best bassist of all time list is raising my blood pressure
Id love to see that crossover
But not only Jasons attitude but also his singing style and musical agression fits Metallica better than Les weirdnes.
Cliff was that talented, maybe didnt slap, but he was fast as fuck. Les is a better replacement than jason in that matter but the weirdnes is just too much hahah he would have been lars and James target
Basically load and reload would’ve been pretty interesting
As a bassist I can respect Les’s talent and playing but I’m not a fan of him or Primus. I think Flotsam and Jetsam could’ve been much bigger with Jason tho.
LOVE JASON ...I DONT LISTEN WITHOUT HIM
Deep Thoughts with Jack Handy
Ohhh Lars I love you, you have give us, so many memes
Should hear Primus cover of The Thing That Should Not Be......on their Rhinoplasty album. It's MUCH heavier than the Metallica version in my opinion
Robert was also in ozzy's band
Les Claypool played Bass in a Progressive Thrash band called Blind Illusion and it was freaking amazing!
He'd do a fantastic job in Metallica....if they'd set their egos aside and let him do it!
I thought the example was gonna be Eclectic Electric from Primus' Antipop which has James Hetfield on guitar
Primus covered The Thing That Should Not Be, and it's definitely Primus covering Metallica
Oh! & Andriy my friend.. Quick question.. I know it's a random question but I noticed the length of your nails on your right hand..
A bit longer then the left/fretboard hand.. Is that helpful to you? I personally keep my nails short on both hands.. If anything a tad bit longer on my right hand if playing guitar/acoustic. Anyhow! Stay well frieend 😎

I just looked back & I think I got it wrong.. It appears you/we both & possibly many other players tend to have our (RIGHT) hand fingernails a bit longer for finger picking and so on 😁 Anyhow! I still keep my right hand fingernails relatively short.. Specially when full on playing Bass
Nails give a fuller ringing tone, almost like a pick :)
