    Nottie, you really got to learn something about open tunings. Open D tuning DADF#AD, Dm tuning would be DADFAD. It means that strings are tuned in an open chord, that helps playing chords with slide. Just sliding down and up the neck and you get the chords D, E, F#...and so on. Only challenge is that it is either in major or minor. Then you might have to add special fingerings, if you want to play different chords, like D, Em7, G-5.

    hey, ardent octopus is right. you can do anything u put ur mind to. patience and consistence. i started playing slide back in May, and although my skill is no where near as sick as his, it's coming along pretty well. just be determined and when u get pissed off, its ok to put it down and take a break, just make sure u pick it back up during that day, not the following month...thats all. hope thats gives someone more inspiration...

    I am searching around to exactly figure out from where this tune is mostly borrowed. There are some elements of "Big Road Blues" and "Dust My Broom" in this tune. However, borrowing elements of blues from various tunes is what this soulful music is all about. This tune is more than playing musical notes, it also is about playing an accompanying bass/rhythmic timing. This is uncomplicated good stuff played at a correct tempo.

    @Wesh67300 17 лет назад

    Ok I get it. But my previous comment wasn't mean or anything, your playing is really great, and I used the word "basic" because it is a well known tune among blues guitarists, but I know it is very hard to play! I might start slide playing. I have been playing for 1 year, do you think I should wait to get more comfortable with the guitar, or should I start know? Keep on rocking and sliding!!

  • @LeekyChicken

    how did you learn to play like that... because i dont really know where to learn something that sounds like that... i mean alot of mainstream songs have tabs (can you read music), but i dont really know the names of any songs that could get me on track with blues... like i play metal, but i didnt need any help to get the sound right. i would rather do blues like this than metal.

    This has probably been mentioned but it is odd to play bottleneck stye slide with the extended nut installed. That super high action is for lap stye playing. With the nut extension you can only play slide notes. It is impossible to fret any notes in a practical or in-tune way. I play bottleneck slide and like to mix in some fretted playing.

  • @ESQ134

    I strapped on my wet-tuned accordion and played with the slide guitar. He's playing progression D-G-A. This is not a complicated tune, but the simplicity and authenticity of the little piece is quite attractive. We could make money playing together. This is really fun music. My compliments to you, and I wish you all the best.

  • @Drratburn

    Yeah tell me about it. I just bought a Resonator guitar for pretty cheap, but it is great. I've been playing bass for a while, but I never learned about the instruments themselves, only how to play. Just gotta keep researching I guess. If there is anything worth knowing that you could tell me, that'd be fantastic.

  • @amjayven

    I was more upset about my first post being deleted. I cited a book published in '75 that has the opening progression note for note. I've played it over and over as well. Your playing is great and I mis-took you for the author of the book, especially when you say it's your sig piece. A few beers later and I'm being an ass about it. Sorry.

    hey oct. I have been messing around with some slide and I was wondering. The nut extender that you are using in this video, is it made of black rubber? cause that what it looks like. I have been using a steel one that sounds fine but I was just curious. Maybe it's graphite?

  • @barflew
    @barflew 16 лет назад

    You have a great technique. I have a mess of guitars set up for slide, and one is an old Yamaha 12 string in open C tuning. The old cheap guitars seem to have much less over tones and better sustain. Of course you know that. when I hear someone play as well as you, I go back to playing my harmonica's.

  • @tangledup625
    @tangledup625 17 лет назад

    Very nice. Great sound and technique. Hard to tell how heavy your glass slide is. Is it custom or can you tell me what it is. (I'm just teaching myself (well, attempting to) and I have a brass slide, but your glass one sounds much fuller. (Probably just your skill level!) Do you have a preference?

    Hey mate - you wouldn't have any expertise on rebuilding an old guitar into a proper slideguitar? :) I have an old B&H London 1930 Jazz Guitar with double f-holes - and it would be awesome to be able to use it as a slide guitar instead.

    Thank you very much, very glad you like it... OK, now on the why mono thing... hmm, besides it's all I had at the time let's see if this makes sense. If you are sitting in the room with me listening to me play live, say in your kitchen, my guitar has one sound hole and I am one person playing one thing so live I am mono so I am just keeping it real. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    I learned to play this style accidentally, not so much where I was going but where I ended up. Mostly because I did not no where to find the rite way to play slide. I can read music but not for his stuff. Check out my lesson vid for some basics and keep in mind I have been at it for 30 years and I am still trying to figure it out as well... Good luck and have fun. You may find something you like that is not like this on your way, just keep making music.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    Sometimes I use them sometimes I prefer just fingers. Easier to get the bass muffle and thump with the pick since it is like having your nail come out the side of your thumb. That is a better angle to rest your palm on the strings near the bridge for that thud sound. Fingers have lots of pluses as well so back and forth and always trying slightly different ways. Anything is correct if you like the sound you get. Thanks, Good luck

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    This is D... I have a serious dislike of the key of G, I always here how great it is to play in G but I just can't get on board. It moves the root to the 5th string and generally annoys me. Hey, if U like G go for it... When I need G I can play that key while tuned to open E. So it is not the key I avoid it's the tunning. Thanks and sorry if that was way more then you wanted to know.

  • @rohofmann

    Hey I got a question..
    does a metal (or glass) slide work on a nylon string guitar?
    And another question.. If I buy a non expensive acoustic guitar to play only slide. I'd only have to buy a taller nut.. or would I need a taller nut and bridge?
    Cause I already have a slide but it's really tough to make it sound good on my acoustic cause the action is really low.
    Thanks for the advice ;)
    Great playing by the way =)

    You have clearly not read all the comments and response, hey it's ok there are almost 4500 but I never claimed to have written 12 bar blues.. this is my sig piece as it is the first thing I play when I pick up a guitar, not because I wrote it. Anyway Muddy can have the credit but he did not write it either. For all it matters to me you can have the credit as well. Relax, it is just music so it is my frickin signature tune. Oh and the Diamonds at her feet vid is Muddy but this is more Bukka

    No worries, It was an accidental deletion, I was deleting spam and double clicked and your comment took the fallout. I keep up with deleting spam like crazy but I don't delete things just because I don't agree, unless it's vulgar. Who the heck knows where or from who I learned anything at this point but I never had a slide book, If I did I most likely would not use a raised nut. Beer time here too!!!

    I dont know about this guy, but you can actually buy a peice that goes over your nut that raises the strings higher. You can take it on or off. It's a metal "V" shaped thing. I don't remember what it's called.

"Sory I can't come to the phone Sory I can't come to the phone Leave a messege when you here the tone and I ll call you back when I get home Sory I can't come to the phone" ... @ayronium Defiantly not Old Brown Shoe. Hwy 61 is more like Old Brown Shoe then this. I went and gave it a listen and I gotta go with other then the use of a slide, Nope... Basic 12 bar is a bit like millions of tunes, just a simple 12 bar:) was just playing what I play, never expected 2 million hits, cheers

    I learned about the real blues guys much later, I don't know where this tune came from... sorta my version of something I heard as a kid. The one that made me want to play slide was George Thoroughgood when I was about 10 and it was not until I was between 17 and 20 that I discovered the blues greats. TY

    Hey Brotha... I never said I wrote it..just what I play first thing, I am not familiar with the book but always wondered what the tune was. I have played it since I was 10. So I will look the book up and if it's close enough he can have credit... To me it is just a12 bar thing thats always been stuck in my haed. If you are correct apologies to Arlen.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    Is it hard to play or not? It gets much easier if you practice for 30 years. I am tuned to an open D. You should learn to play in standard tuning first. Nothing truly worth while is easy but at the same time this is not complicated. Basically I can't really answer since it will be different for everyone. I practiced allot.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    Free? you want it for FREE? well it is already free here and actually there is an MP3 version available on the podsafe music network and it was one of the free ones. Sadly all the I want it for free attitude on the internet makes it so only very few can make a living with no day job but I'm not bitter:-)

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    There are so many different ways and so many different spots creating different reasons to deaden as well as times you need not worry about it. My initial thought was, I like sustain, Well since I can't be sure how or where you having a problem the best I can say is practice till you like what you here and then practice till others like it.

  • @ardentoctopus

    .012 gage will be fine going up to E. With .013 tune down to D, in some ways I prefer that with the more boomy bass. Since I play with other musicians I have stopped buying the .013 because of the need to change the tuning to fit the song. I have a lap steel also and I keep .013 on that. Thanks and good luck.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  17 лет назад

    Sorry not taking title submissions at this time. I have said many times if you want to read 4,000 comments that it is just a 12 bar blues and that I stole it from every slide player that ever lived. Relax man, my sig piece because I always play it first thing when I pick up the guitar. Sorry if that's a problem for you.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  15 лет назад

    start slow, keep it simple, my thumb dose not really keep a steady beat if you listen closely. This style is always a compromise and an approximation. Once you can do it you may look back and say, "is that all there is to this". mostly have fun:-) look at the lesson vid on my page. Thanks

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  15 лет назад

    .013 Martin SP strings.I do normally use .012 but sometimes heavy is nicer when tuned down to D. I still experiment with different ones. I was a DR fan for a bit but now I am back on Martin SP's. DR's sound good and perhaps better but not for as long.... Thanks for the comment skydog:-)

    You can if you want to, you are only 15, I am 45 so you are just at the beginning. You can learn absolutely anything you put your mind to and playing some blues slide will be far from your greatest achievement but may well be among the most fun. Be patient and consistent, you can do this.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    It is metal, but old and tarnished, can't find another one like it. I have some of the newer kind and they do work just fine. That Yamaha has such lousy action that I have removed it and still can slide about the same. I have put it on my Les Paul for a recording project. Thanks

    Basic blues is all I was doing I'll grant you and I appreciate greatly how many people liked it, I just played it because it's what I like. based on your comment I went strait to your page hoping to see how it should really be done but, sadly you've got nothing, cheers.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    I have not memorized the fret board in every tuning, just scales and shapes that can be moved around. I tend to stick with E and D as the intervals are the same but I can dabble in G if I have to. If you can memorize it all flat out have at it, too much like work for me.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    you are 100% correct. I have removed the raised nut since recording this and have been working on some slide plus finger stuff. I won't abandon this method since it's fun and just a product of my being self taught, I pretty much learned in a vacuum... but I'm with ya brotha:-)

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  16 лет назад

    People have been telling me I stole this since I posted it but I never claimed to have written it or not. I just have no clue. As far as I know it is just a 12 bar blues based on everything I ever heard. I'm sure it incorporates subliminal thievery but your guess is as good as mine, Good luck.

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  17 лет назад

    yes, not as high as this for all slide styles. the way I play is similar to steel guitar, normally played flat on your lap. When playing a style with no fretted notes a nut extender will give you the cleanest sound in the easiest way, that's what you see here... thanks

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  17 лет назад

    Well, you can buy a highly polished brass slide for $6.00 and spend your time playing the guitar. Unless you are making them better the what you ca buy so you can sell them? If you do that I will give you a plug on my podcast. I have a variety of hand made slides and some are pretty cool. Thanks

  • @ardentoctopus
    @ardentoctopus  17 лет назад

    No offense taken! Never wait to play anything,strike while the iron is hot! What's the worst thing that could happen? Good luck. The best music is basic, start slow, keep it simple. The sound of each note is far more important then speed. Mostly have fun and try not to steel my signature tune.

    A glass slide is little bitt better, it gives a smoother sound, but if you drop it on the floor it brakes : P The metal gives a nice sound to, but a little bitt more thin sound, not so warm and smooth ; )

    I have no idea, it is some what based on something I heard as a kid and put together on guitar years later. So I do not claim credit but don't know who to credit. I am also not certain how close it is to the original as that was over 30 years ago.

    Thanks Leo... There is a lesson vid on my page. I don't break it down into extreme detail but It may help. That tune was years ago and honestly my mind is now on other music but it still makes me happy that so many have enjoyed it, thanks

    Not really sure but I played the guitar a hell of a lot, not over night. We all progress at different speeds and at different levels so how long is not important, just keep at it and I guarantee you will never be done any more then I will, enjoy the journey!

    It sounds like something I may have heard as a little kid, that memory mixed with general 12 bar improv and done for about 30 years till it was finally the same every time. So to answer the q is it original, dammed if I know, but I like playing it. Thanks

    12 bar blues on a slide guitar. Not sure if you meant the title or the style but that covers it. Tune is based on like everything I have ever heard. Search DOBRO for guitar style even though I don't play in traditional Dobro style. Thanks

    Thanks much, Jerry was a fine slide player, even did the lap steel work on Teach Your Children from CSN, fantastic compliment and much appreciated. If I could have my dream Jam with anyone it could be Jerry Garcia and Dave Grisman.

    It has a nut extender so the set up is more like steel guitar. slips overt the existing nut. $7.00 at a good music store. It can be hard to find someone that knows what your talking about. Got mine at Mandolin Brothers, Staten Island, NY

    I go by many names. Neapolitan menace, Nunzio Abruzi, Octopus, The Ardent one... then there is the list of things I have been called that I prefer not to repeat. Can I call you the Funky One? Oh, I sometimes answer to Steve as well.

    slow down, way down.. only ad bits of melody sparingly and keep at it, speed will come. I've been playing like that for 30 years . Follow your own path grasshopper, you don't need to sound like me or anyone else, just find grooves that work for you.

    because it's the first thing you will here me play when ever I pick up the guitar and it has a definite repeatable melody, even if it is simple and basic I think you can tell it apart from anything else. That's my story and I'm sticking to it:-)

    What I hate about slide playing and some other creative playing styles is all the different tunings. Open G/A, Open D/E, DADGAD, standard etc. I'd like to have a guitar for each tuning oO

    i was curious as to how you raised your strings so high off of the neck? Yeah i know its a rather stupid question, but i want to know how, before i go messing around with my guitar haha

    @KamiKraziGuy its really a matter of preference. they both have different sounds. metals produce a really well metal on metal sound (for lack of a better word) and glass is very smooth

    I like this style too I know it's probably a generic blues but I like it and would love it if anyone could give me some names of artists that rock this style, would really appreciate it!!
