I think my all-time favorite fourth wall break Capcom has ever put in their games is Cody's super from Alpha 3. He throws punches behind himself at the same intervals that gave you an infinite in the original Final Fight. It's just a beautiful nod to the actual gamer player base, and I love it.
They're not very consistent on how Cody went to jail. First it was because he just couldn't stop figthing, then poison framed him for her crimes or maybe he willingly took the blame for guy's crimes. Either way he finally reformed and he's currently metro city's mayor.
It was more like, he couldn't stop fighting, but what it REALLY was, was he couldn't stop fighting the wrong people. AKA the ones that could get him imprisoned.
@@allcapcomeverything3866 I disagree, during Cody's prison phase Cody develops a nihilistic and depressed attitude, dismissing the concept of justice and being a hero again (despite those traits being so ingrained in him he only breaks out to when evil is afoot and targets said evil boss, succeeding with one of the 26 copies of Seth) because jail time was his "reward" for saving Jessica and Metro City. This points to the frame up being the main cause for Cody's predicament. V also points to this being the case due to the ease Mike was able to free him. Cody also isn't the type of person to randomly beat up people who don't want to fight. Though by the ambiguous syntax, if you were instead referring to Eddie E (who notably was the only cop to try to keep Cody in his cell) and other high end criminals that have government power I apologize for my confusion.
@Will Diesel Unlike Streetwise, Revenge was never explicitly stated to be non canon, gets more information in the Street Fighter Zero 3 Secret File Book and its events are referenced in Zero/Aplha 3 itself. I never stated he was completely nihilistic, heck my very post suggests otherwise, ("despite those traits being so ingrained in him he only breaks out to when evil is afoot and targets said evil boss, succeeding with one of the 26 copies of Seth")
@Will Diesel That wasn't a canonical appearance of Belgar and just a Easter Egg as according to the story Belgar is still dead and someone new is reviving the Mad Gears. Nothing canonical interferes with Revenge. If anything its FF3 thats getting the shaft as Lucia is suddenly old friends with Cody and teamed up with him to fight Mad Gears in the past and may or may not be his new love interest.
@Will Diesel Mike would've killed zombie!Belgar according to the Secret File book keeping him dead. (either way though he isn't alive) The frustrating thing with Lucia is she is for sure a cop at the time and Capcom implies the events take place over 3. It is just implication though. Mad Gear seems to be a constant problem for Metro City if SFV is any indication so it could be more of a case like Revenge or SFV where they stay in Metro City instead of country hopping like in 2. On the bright side SFV is setting up a FF plot so that gives me hope for a new FF game since the new SoR game was successful.
Great video. There's a couple obscure tidbits about Cody: 1. Cody in SFA3 was originally supposed to be the return of Joe (SF1 character) but for whatever reason, Cody was brought back instead. There were rumors that Joe was supposed to be the main character of Street Fighter '89, but then became Cody, which is why they share a couple moves. A much later interview stated that it was Ryu and Ken who were supposed to be the main characters of SF89. 2. Cody didn't have a last name for a long time, until Streetwise, where it was stated to be Travers. Capcom Japan actually went ahead and made that last name canon as of SFV. They did the same thing with Charlie, where his Japanese name (Nash) was never considered to be his last name until SFV released. 3. An issue of the SF comic had Cody make reference to how many enemies he could fight at once in whatever port of Final Fight (he says something like "it doesn't matter whether there's 2 of you, 6 of you, or 8 of you, I'll take you on!") He mentions it as a fourth wall thing. I can't remember what issue it was off the top of my head.
I was actually just about to bring up the first bit. It's very interesting how closely connected Cody and Joe actually were in the early stages of Final Fight/SFA3's development. Kinda makes me wonder what would've happened if it was Joe in that jumpsuit and not Cody.
Cody's story is incredibly tragic as he got screwed for just being the hero. I'm glad he's got his groove back ( in charge of Metro City no less) but still sad Jessica isn't in his life. I'm still shocked Capcom got dark and turned on their main hero for over 20 years.
It’s rumoured that his jail story would have been attributed to Joe from the first street fighter (the guy who breaks the wall in the intro, and the kick-boxer) I wonder how that would have turned out?
Actually, the guy who broke the wall in the original game was an early version of Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury/The King of Fighters. In an interview, Hiroshi Matsumoto mentions the Caucasian man who wore a leather jacket during the opening sequence of the game. Despite appearing in the opening, he was not found in the actual game. At the time they had already decided that one of the other playable characters for Street Fighter (1987) would be another dougi-clad karate fighter (but in red), but the devs wanted to include the Caucasian man in the next game if given the opportunity. The mysterious man ended up being the model for Terry in his next game Garou Densetsu: Shukumei no Tatakai (1991).
Joe on the other hand was one of the inspirations behind Cody, and was originally going to be playable in Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 3 (1998) instead of Final Fight's hero.
@@pleaseshutup7053 i always wondered if Cody knew Karin back in the day, they connected. She backed his journey, and kept that secret. My head canon was that at the end of Final Fight the destruction Hagar Guy and Cody wrought was huge and with the killing of Mad Gear's boss, the cops needed to arrest somebody. Hagar was Mayor and Guy was a ninja who helped with no ties. So Cody took the fall and went to jail. In jail Cody would become hardened and cold and the romance between him and Jessica would weaken. Cody eventually escaping jail in Alpha 3 to exercise his skills.

Cody is my favorite character in SF and this was a good video for a breakdown of his history. Honestly at the time seeing a character so devoted to justice get framed and lose everything, which causes him to fall down a nihilistic depression spiral was depressing. Thankfully Cody never lost that sense of justice no matter how much he tried to hide it and Mike would fix things and save Cody, resulting in him becoming mayor. (hopefully one day Guy will get see his efforts were not in vain) SFV does make one make one strange albeit major change not covered here Lucia and Cody apparently fought the Mad Gear together at one point and now are old friends.
A lot of people don't believe me when I say that Final Fight was supposed to be Street Fighter successor, Street Fighter '89. That's why a lot of the FF characters make random appearances. Sodom and Rolento made early appearances, Hugo and Poison in some later games (Hugo was in SF3)Lucia showed up in 5 but sadly Maki only made an appearance in CvS2 (she was my favorite and hopeful she'll return in SF6). What a great and informative video on Cody as a character. However I feel like you also left out the fun fact that Cody is one of the strongest characters in Street Fighter and the reason he used to wear the handcuffs is as a handicap. If he wasn’t holding back, he could potentially beat Akuma and Oni lol
I'd like to think that at some point after Cody became mayor, he eventually would encounter Jessica again, and thanks to Haggar, the two would get back together.
Why, she dumped him when he was at his lowest. Even left the country. DIdn't even check in on him to see if he's doing ok. If someone called her up and told her Cody became mayor, and THEN she decided to come back, it would be a bad look on her part.

I read somewhere that there's a theory that Marlowe is actually Jessica Haggar in disguise, keeping an eye on Cody as mayor at her father's direction. Any solid evidence for this?
I always assumed because Cody's specialty was knives he must've killed someone in in final fight since his next appearance was in Alpha 3 I thought that's why he was in jail, I like that story better than Eddie E framing him
Am I mistaken? I thought Street Fighter Alpha was a prequel. Did it not depict the events BEFORE the first Final Fight? Was Cody a trouble maker and wind up in jail BEFORE he met Jessica? Is that why Haggar held some initial resentment for him? I think the Street Fighter games also occurred in a different order from when they were released. But it's very likely I'm just confused.
Top Hat Gaming Man, you should definitely do a Street Fighter character documentary video on Poison! Capcom has a controversial history involving her if she is transgender or not. Pretty please?
Good shit! Final Fight was my favorite arcade game as a kid and Cody’s been my main character in SF since Alpha 3. I knew Streetwise existed but never played it. Never knew the story details or that it was non-canon. Gonna have to track down a copy just to see Cody Death for myself. 😂
nice to see that Cody gained 5 inches in height between Final Fight and Street Fighter man, guess prison can really change people PS: Final Fight Streetwise is an awesome underrated gem despite the awful critical reception
Its time for a new final fight game it's way overdue just like Streets of Rage 4 whoever did Streets of Rage 4 can definitely do a new final fight but it would be awesome to see the characters from Streets of Rage DLC for Street Fighter sometime in the near future. here's the issue I'm having being a gamer all these years and Double Dragon final fight and Streets of Rage have not crossed paths and entered each other's universe

Cody was one of my mains in ALPHA III
I read somewhere that there's a theory that Marlowe is actually Jessica Haggar in disguise, keeping an eye on Cody as mayor at her father's direction. Any solid evidence for this?
Peoples simp fanfiction
Hey, Top Hat Gaming Man! Can you please do a Street Fighter character documentary video on Sakura Kasugano?
Cody is a dying name. A cowboy of the past. A cavalier. A pathfinder.
How is Cody only 177 lbs. Hé looks huge
Asian logic
I always assumed because Cody's specialty was knives he must've killed someone in in final fight since his next appearance was in Alpha 3 I thought that's why he was in jail, I like that story better than Eddie E framing him
I didn't know that Top Hat gaming man and lady decade were together both of their channels are freaking awesome
Now we ask Capcom to revive Dean and see what he's been up to
This is something Capcom almost did, until Final Fight: Seven Sons failed to impress focus groups
You are mistaken, Alpha was set between Street Fighter 1 and 2, but they also decided to put Final Fight in the same universe.
@@Mari_Izu So when did Final Fight happen, along the timeline?
@@simonashtear2739 Afrer the first SF but before SFA
YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHH Cody
Boy this was amazingly indepth 👍👍👍🤔🤔
Cody, Guy, Poison, Hagar, and Rose should have been the "Final Challegers" in SF2 Ultra instead of just evil Ryu and Ken.
Top Hat Gaming Man, you should definitely do a Street Fighter character documentary video on Poison! Capcom has a controversial history involving her if she is transgender or not. Pretty please?
So Cody can risk his life saving shawty but she can't stick with him through his bid.. Man these ho£$ ain't loyal
Go to prison, breaks out of prison, becomes a mayor. Ok check. Lol
Cody has the best character development
Have you seen the movie Streets of Fire (1984)?
That's where Capcom got Cody's character from.
Good shit!
Final Fight was my favorite arcade game as a kid and Cody’s been my main character in SF since Alpha 3.
I knew Streetwise existed but never played it. Never knew the story details or that it was non-canon. Gonna have to track down a copy just to see Cody Death for myself. 😂
nice to see that Cody gained 5 inches in height between Final Fight and Street Fighter man, guess prison can really change people
PS: Final Fight Streetwise is an awesome underrated gem despite the awful critical reception
one of the best backstory for a FF/SF character 😘
It would be good to make a fan made game with Cody and Guy from Street fighter alpha , u can also add Andore and Rolento from it as bosses
There is an official Capcom game remake that already did that.
It's called Final Fight One for the Game Boy Advance.
Cody’s switch to criminal is actually in the Final Fight Streetwise on ps2
Its time for a new final fight game it's way overdue just like Streets of Rage 4 whoever did Streets of Rage 4 can definitely do a new final fight but it would be awesome to see the characters from Streets of Rage DLC for Street Fighter sometime in the near future. here's the issue I'm having being a gamer all these years and Double Dragon final fight and Streets of Rage have not crossed paths and entered each other's universe
Yall should check out a lofi hip hop artist named ruffian kick named after one of codys signature moves in sfa. Hes super dope
Cody's secretary got the cake lol
He upgraded
Correction: the GBA port of Final Fight was called Final Fight One, not Final Fight Zero.
Cody Rhodes always cosplaying Mayor Cody in AEW.
