    I think I know why Cody kept pushing Guy away. Usually with depression people push those who are closest to them away as to not hurt them (even though it does the opposite), which makes this even more sad.

    Cody's actually one of the strongest in canon. Almost at Akuma's tier, in fact. The only thing holding him back is his lack of discipline or training. I believe this was stated by Oro, who is highest currently with believe it or not Dhalsim being the next. Then Akuma, then Cody. This canon could have changed, however, as that's old. Cody has no formal training. He's just brawling and it works. There's no special training or anything for what he does. Whipping out criminal uppers is just him punching so hard that it creates a whirlwind. His character type is like Slayer in Guilty Gear. He's seriously pulling his punches and looking for a challenge. This is what made him bored and lazy. Nothing ever really came close. He had good fights but he never had a challenge. He's the trope of the too strong and bored character.

    • @NinjaWorldWarrior16
      @NinjaWorldWarrior16 5 лет назад +28

      Officially, it's Akuma = Oro > Gill > Gouken > SFIII Ryu > Urien > Black Moons Bison > Illuminati Nash > Cody => Zeku >= Guy > Necalli = Dhalsim.
      Dhalsim is definitely not number 2, he fought V-Trigger Necalli to a draw.

    The reason I always took for why Cody insisted on fighting by himself is sort of the same as why he keeps his handcuffs on willingly. Shame and self-berating. Cody was depressed, and didn't want to disappoint his old friend by trying to improve himself (while he was a criminal) because he thought he was incapable of getting past it.

      Bison doesn't want to be the president he wants to own the entire planet! Marlow could very easily be Kolin since she's shown to be able to change her appearence through Gil's power. The Illuminati pretty much run things and have had their fingers in a whole bunch of pies pre SFIII so she could be there to keep an eye on Cody since it's been stated many times that he's quite powerful and could possibly pose a threat to the Illuminati. Or, she could just be a hardass secretary who knows about Cody's past and wants to keep him in check.

    • @ayoubazargui5729
      @ayoubazargui5729 6 лет назад +11

      British Tea oh the street fighter community loves to be little theorists. Did we forget that Helen = Kolin? Why would she need 3 personas now? And her change from Helen to Kolin was a name change, that’s all. I see no correlation as to why Kolin would be Cody’s secretary. Especially if her story is starting out just now.

    I love the colors chosen for Cody’s suit, With the blue and white not only being representative of his prison uniform, but his original final fight outfit. I would also wager that the orange on his design could be an allusion to the more modern orange prison jumpsuit we now see in most prisons, or more simply it could just be that blue and orange are contrasting colors that look well together

  • @wh3nderson95

    @DiGi Valentine, I like to think the reason for the secretary to have her face concealed could be a reference to the Powerpuff Girls cartoon. In that show, there is a woman named Miss Bellum who is the secretary to the Mayor in that show, she manages Townsville better than the Mayor. Both women are dressed in Red, can occasional scold the Mayor, dependable, and do not have their face exposed. Also, I am getting an air of fanservice with the secretary, while Miss Bellum had an hourglass figure in her depiction. Both are attractive, and work within limitations.
    Metro City is in the United States, it could be a reference to American characters from a beloved franchise.

      considering the rather noticeable shot of marlows butt in some shots being similar to mrs. bellum being a rather in hindsight tricky way of getting fanservice into that show/along with the being obscured by objects or being out of headshot(with a brief close up of her lips and beauty mark near it in the ending aside.) mostly i think it is a intentional reference.(i wouldn't be too surprised considering necalli's a giant shout out to kars and the pillar men from jojo even having transformations,and the games recently tying street fighter to its outside media and even other capcom franchises in a shared,if slightly reworked universe.)

    I always believed that Cody should’ve been the ideal student Oro was looking for. Both characters hold back their full fighting potential with Oro binding one of his arms, and Cody’s handcuffs when we know he could just break out of them. They both state they go easy on their opponent, and if I was Oro I would be interested in where Cody gets his strength from. I would have loved to seen the more interesting relationship between them two rather than Oro and Ryu. It would have been fun seeing the hermit trying to teach the punk his knowledge of fighting and trying to pass it down to Cody. But either way Cody becoming mayor is also a good call so I’ll also take that

    • @Spyder3107
      @Spyder3107 6 лет назад +16

      No he is, in SF4 there's a win quote with Oni that suggests that they're of comparable power if Cody wasn't holding back. He's near Oro tier already.

    • @NinjaWorldWarrior16
      @NinjaWorldWarrior16 5 лет назад +1

      @@Spyder3107 SFIV quotes were poorly translated, though. Narratively Cody is just Guy's superior rival, who is superior to Base Bison which allows us to place Cody above Necalli and Dhalsim. But then it gets all muddy for us to place him higher than that, since then there is Illuminati Nash who held his own against Black Moons Bison (who Cody never fought & hasn't been stated to be superior to), then Urien who is somewhat comparable to Gill, then SFIII Ryu who is just incredibly focused, and then top-tiers like Gouken, Oro and Akuma. It'd take a lot of highballing & speculation to place Cody at that level.

    in his classic design its a basic and large, seeing as its just a pair of plain jeans & a shirt. this is his basic ruffian state. a standard action hero
    after he is jailed his ruffian white and blue is now the stripes of his jumper as if to point that his violent reputation is now the warning signs (a "real" prison jumper would be black or orange, so I really think this is a stylistic choice)
    as mayor white and blue are de-emphesized, that part of his life is over. Now the blue & white stripes are the pinstripe detailing of his dress shirt

    Apparently Cody already has broken out of his cuffs, since he likes wearing them for the reason you just described, but he can just pop them off whenever he pleases, as demonstrated by his taunt in Alpha 3 where he says what sounds to me like "No lie!" like he's saying "yep, they're for show.”

He learns and trains boxing and martial arts since age 9 ( in which people can simply do at home and at local academies). He not so serious into something foolish and ridiculous such as: becoming a warrior, or trying to save the world. Had a beautiful girlfriend that I wished he kept forever, gotten married, and has his stellar career as Mayor. And has high intelligence also. And have such a peaceful, normal, boring life. I'd like to bring up something you might have missed, or simply forgot to bring up: his watch.
    I think its a bit symbolic of his new found responsibility and visual representation that he no longer has the time or freedom to do whatever he wants anymore.
    Also notice how he adjusts his watch on his wrist after certain attacks. It's sort of a visualization that he's still not entirely comfortable with his new role in the city. but although its uncomfortable, he still chooses to wear it, because he's still committed to doing what he needs to.
    I might have read into that minute detail a bit too much but I still feel the designers were trying to convey something with the watch adjustment.

    yes! I was waiting for another of your videos to come! cody's new design seems like it reflects his complex journey , and the stripes give an overall balance between high and low, and convey a sense of upwards verticality that is a parallel to his story.

    Also something i noticed about Cody's outfit bookmark thing is that Cody's first outfit is kind of simple, due to his kind of simple lifestyle of fighting crime, his second outfit is really simplistic (i mean LOOK AT IT it's just a onesie with cuffs) signifying his really simple new lifestyle of just fighting for the jist of it, and then you have his third outfit that is kinda complicated representing his now more complicated lifestyle of being the president.

    I was really hoping you would do a video for Cody and although it had a few inaccuracies (Cody got into prison via being framed by Eddi E. the cop who chases him in SFA3 and his breakouts to fight being a facade for his subdued desire for justice as seen in SF4) you did not disappoint, this was a well done video. Thank you. As for Guy, IMO its because Cody feels that he doesn't deserve Guy's friendship and in his depressed state tries to push Guy away unsuccessfully.

    The only question about his visual design for me is, why does he carry the knife? There's no no need for it. The guy is a literal walking talking weapon! Lol. Is it just like a Future Trunks from Dragonball Z situation? Where he has it just because?

    • @cyanariesdw04
      @cyanariesdw04 6 лет назад +12

      Because it makes him look badass. And it also tells us that every Cody goes, a knife is always near by. Seriously though, in Alpha 3 and 4, everywhere this man went, a knife was directly in the middle between him and whoever he was fighting. He has no pockets in his, so he can't store it and if he had it in his hand, why would he put it down, just to pick it up later?

      Secondarily, Cody is skilled with knives on a level beyond transendence. That was his actual specialty in FF1. He could use melee with knives for a minute, then throw it at random. He basically does the same in SFA and SFV. The knife is a part of cody. I dont mean lodged into him, i mean he and the knife are best friends. Cyan is also right too

  • @Manobaru
    @Manobaru 6 лет назад +1

    When speaking on the handcuffs, you could've mention his SFA3 taunt, when he literally opens them with no problem, to warm up his hand and then clicks them back again. That surely proofs the fact that having them on is purely his choice.
    Oh, and btw, other than that I think this is the best Who Dat episode yet! :D

    For the vast majority, "Street Fighter" is Ryu or Ken. Or maybe one of the "villains" or colorful characters like Zangief.
    But for me, "Street Fighter" has always been and remains Cody.
    This is the character that has the most complete match with this title. The spirit of broken lanterns and dark streets lives in it.
    A man with his own code and concept of justice.
    His life is dramatic and honest.
    It's captivating and it's easy to imagine that such a guy lived somewhere in the neighborhood. Perhaps this is one of the stories told to you by a great-uncle from another city or a bike from your father’s tipsy old friend:
    "Many years ago I knew a guy named Cody. He was a real street fighter, boy..."

    @4:11 is some pretty graphic promotional art. I remember seeing it as a kid after my mom bought me Final Fighter and was unfazed by it then. But looking at it now threw the sensitive goggles of 2018, it’s amazing it got past the censors. Andore has blood gushing from his head(apparently dead) and Cody has blood dripping from his knuckles. It reminds me of the good ole days when there was actually blood in Street Fighter II. Another thing I noticed about this art was it’s clear that Cody was always meant to be the star of the game. Everyone else has a fighting stance up and is tense, but Cody is just relaxed and waiting for the next opponent to try him lol. My boy!!!!!

    Super impressive style of breaking down character sketches. You don't do character bios, but character sketches. Love your content. You always break down ish, in a way that inventive and creative. Dropping unheard gems, as an artist, as well as a fan.
    Your video of "Q" of Street-fighter is heads down one of the best character sketch breakdowns I have ever seen. Working on such an elusive and mysterious Capcom character; working with only limited information and gleaning off the artist direction emphasized in the animations, taunts, color pallets, style was pure brilliance.

    I think the best part about cody in sfv even his gameplay displays how he has changed. In sf4 he had major uppercuts he could summon at anytime. He also throws rocks whenever. But in sfv his uppercut is now a super displaying how restrained he is with his power and his rocks are only for v triggers and tornadoes are now precise projectiles i think the gameplay shows he went from a street thug on the edge and with brute force to a guy who is trying to control his power more responsibly. Its a nice touch and retains everything that made cody cody. Sakura and cody imo display how to advance fighting game characters.

    What's interesting that you didn't point out was the fact that all the designs kept some element of the old blue-and-white color scheme he had in his very first design. Cody could've worn a shocking orange jumpsuit like we tend to see with prisoner characters, but he wears a jumpsuit with blue-and-white stripes, keeping that piece of visual identity with him. Then, with his mayoral outfit, he's got a blue shirt with white pinstripes, and even his pants have the white pinstripes. It's really neat, honestly.
