      @J B Congratulations on your caricature of French people. I have nothing against people from Belgium, and I don't understand where you come from with this silly charge against Parisians (awesome credential though, you really can talk about stereotypes as you obviously are an expert at wielding them). What you find sad is of no consequence to me. I am not shocked nor butthurt by any of this, this video is not particularly offensive, so what are you talking about? You make up opinions I don't have or things I didn't say and then call me butthurt ! What is wrong with you man :D What is obvious to me though is that THIS guy is seriously butthurt and feels entitled to inflict his prejudices on the rest of the world through this show he is now hosting. You only have to refer to his reaction over the French football team winning the world cup, pointing out that it was Africa who really won, not France, to understand where this guy comes from. Members of the French football team had to react to explain to guys like him that they could both have African origins AND be proud to be French, and that this victory was really a French victory, something a guy like this Trevor can't fit in his "open minded and intelligent" view of the world. He also received a letter from France's ambassador in the US explaining to him what France was about and why we don't go around defining ourselves by our origins, skin colour or religion, and man was the guy Trevor butthurt to receive that letter. His sense of humour is largely dependant on him being the guy making the jokes, I don't think he can take any coming his way. Not the kind of comedian I particularly appreciate. His predecessor, on the other hand, WAS open minded and intelligent, and his show was a pleasure to watch. I won't waste any more of my time explaining any more of this to you, because, you know, like I said, it is a waste of time. You will probably find some other way to twist my arguments and make me look like the arrogant prick you need me to be. Amen to that, I couldn't care less. Take care. Neighbour.

      Wossua a lot of comedians go off a pre-planned script and don't get good at being off the cuff till later in their career, depending on skill level. I have some reservations about Trevor, but if you watch him perform or improvise, he truly has a genius about him that makes comedy come easy to him.
      Right now, there are a lot of African comedians back in his country who are actually very jealous of his rapid growth. Both career wise and skill wise. It'll be a few years before he's at the level of other greats, but he's well on his way.
      Honestly I'm not sure if he has a gift for comedy or if his intellect lets him perform at a high level, but I cant help but feel its the latter.

      @@particuliervdm8603 i think that things like this dont really have borders. The first mention of fries is a painting about a nun in spain frying potatoes.
      However in 1562 potatoes were introduced in the canary islands ( close to africa but part of spain). From south america.
      The first written mention of potatoes in europe is a receipt from the canary islands to the port of antwerp in 1567.
      In mainland spain they arrived in 1570. After that in britain in 1588.
      I think that once people had them they started frying them. So id be inclined to believe that this happened first in belgium or spain since we got the potatoes the fastest.
      There has been a private family source on frying potatoes as fries in belgium but since its from a family archive its hard to check. Borders back then were really just for nobility. It probably devellopped somewhere in the region and spread. Its really not possible to pinpoint things like that. Since you can never for sure know someone was the first. Many were just early adaptors.
      All i can say for sure is that it probably develloped somewhere in the general area

      @@rv3427 I guess the best would be to read the Wikipedia pages on the French Fries in French (more detailed) and in English
      TLDR;
      The Belgian claim has been made by Jo Gérard.
      The Belgian journalist has not produced the manuscript that supports his claim.
      Plus, there are serious challenges to his story:
      - availability of potatoes in Belgium at that time
      - oil spent for poor famers.
      Even Belgian historian like Pierre Leclercq argues against it.
      Meanwhile references exist to support the French claim.
      More questionable argument... ;D
      Belgium started in 1830.

    I teach English in France and this morning one of my students was stuck trying to pronounce walk. He kept sounding as work. I made him repeat Walk and Work a few times and he kept getting them wrong. He said it didn't matter. I'm going him show him this video tomorrow.

      I never managed to say "bread" in english, when I was in Australia I asked for bread in a bakery, she made me repeat like a million times and it didn't walk (ho! no! work ^^), I was so embarrassed (or maybe there was just no bread lol)! Some english words are so hard for french ppl (like ze famous "th" sound)

    • @sakuramari
      @sakuramari 6 лет назад +6

      My students pronounce 'work' as 'walk' because they pronounce the 'or' as it's spelt instead of 'er' , so I ask my students to practise the phrase, "I walk to work."

    • @sakuramari
      @sakuramari 6 лет назад +8

      I also had a student who couldn't say 'bread' so I asked them to say the colour 'red' and then 'b' not as 'bee' but as a short 'bu' sound but without the 'u', (^_^;) sorry it's difficult to explain in text rather than speech, but asked them to try to say it with the 'b' first and then 'red', like 'b.red'. And then they managed it first time :)
      Sorry, that it's difficult for me to explain phonetically in text (^人^;)

    • @cami4974
      @cami4974 6 лет назад

      @sakuramariil, it was clear enough :) I'll try your methos next time, thank you!
      For work/walk it's also about how discrete is the english R (almost a "wl"), so between the "rk" of work and the "lk" of walk, I almost hear the same sound even when Trevor said it, added to what you said on the "a" of walk being like a "o", while the "o" of work is like a "er"!

      Because accents aren't racist unless used intentionally as a racially insensitive mechanism in the context it's being used.
      Just using an accent for the sake of using an accent isn't racist by itself.
