    I agree, looks like the block gave it up first. Classic failure splitting out thru the bolt holes. Back in the day split several 12v blocks like that some from end to end. At 13:49 it is visible a lot of sand caved in in that casting also appears there maybe a metal issue at the bottom of that right hand head bolt/ You can see it looks real shiny compared to everything else. A pitty Hamilton can't put a chamfer on a hole. Everyone visible there is a sharp as machined hole, that makes a huge stress riser and a perfect place for cracks to start. Going to be some much better recast blocks coming out of Pa/Ohio I hear soon but they won't be wet blocks.

      @@pddofficial One of the shops I do machine work for is looking into getting blocks cast to be a more affordable option to the deck plate motors. They likely will be 4 bolt mains with cross bolts as well to tie the entire lower structure of the block together in a girder around the plane of the crank rather than below it like a girdle does. So no girdle will be needed.

    Core shift. I went through this with 3 Hamilton stage 3 heads before I got a half way decent one. Then the machine work was so bad I ended up going stock ported. Had about the same amount of money at the end of the day. But had a way better head in the end.

    Might also be worth looking at how the fire ring was machined. If it has sharp corners it will be a stress raiser that can cause cracking that would propagate pretty quickly given the stress the block is already under.

    • @pddofficial
      @pddofficial  4 года назад

      Fire ring groove in the block and head is a radius aka round groove, not a rectangular groove.

    PDD is like a family which is nice to see in this day where you can give a company everything you can even to the point of making stuff at home for free and have a bad day that leads to one bad private conversation about someone and get fired or more accurately damn near fired and talked into quitting because of the hostile work environment. Josh you picked an expensive hobby might have been cheaper to have gone with meth or cocaine :) It will all work out though and you will see your 2k eventually. Failure is temporary.

    I am not a diesel mechanic but I know the laws of nature don't change just because diesel fuel is used and ANY engine bellowing black smoke like that is ultra rich and not lean as stated in the video so that might be a failure to consider. Also the claim that the rod stretched very nearly made me piss myself laughing because the huge dent on the side should be a strong clue that it smacked something as it was pinwheeling inside the crankcase. It had to happen after the wrist pin was ejected as well because if the pin was still in the rod it would retain the size of the steel pin no matter what. I want to see if Gale Banks does a video about this failure and if he decides to offer some help in getting to that 2k number. He is working on a dirtymax now but has played with cummins for years as well and it would make an interesting collaboration in my opinion.

      Easy to say when you have a full sponsorship and everythings paid for. Free vehicle, engine, parts, R&D team, mechanics, and basically unlimited resources. Then of course it's easy to say shit like that lol. But I'd be saying the same shit if I was ken ; )

    That oil looks awful. I know diesel oil is dirtier, but is it usually that bad?

    • @pddofficial
      @pddofficial  4 года назад +2

      Oil gets dark quickly on race engines with larger than stock ring gaps and such, the sooty blowby on a diesel is much nastier than a gasoline engine. If we build a new 500ish or less HP engine to nearly stock specs, the oil will stay golden and clean for about 2k miles. On one of these loose big power engines, oil stays golden colored for 1 run! Now the super nasty thick oil in the picture is the result of water mixed with sooty oil, cast iron metal bits, raw fuel, etc.... it was pretty nasty!

    Sorry to hear josh hopefully you can make some cash from this video. Don’t think I would have taken it as well as you when you have gone for the better block. I would maybe I vest a little bit more insulation and protection of your electrical components. So at least protect yourself on that front
