It's a bit different in colder climates, where they are seen as summertime beach shoes and very casual. In Brazil it's understandable that people wear much lighter clothing all the time since the climate is so hot. In the North people often wear more conservative clothes in the winter, and go crazy during summer.

Flip flops... lol. The difference is clearly the weather/climate, especially contrasting the west coast (LA) vs northern Atlantic (UK). It's like comparing Florida with Nova Scotia. Of course they are going to dress differently, because it's completely different climates. Anyone who has ever traveled closer down to the equator (which of course she has), think Caribbean, to Sahara, to even pacific islands, and it's flip flops or sandals mostly in the hot months. It's less of an "American" thing and more so a climate thing. Everyone around the world at those latitudes wears sandals ALOT.
Pretty much everyone in the Pacific Islands wears sandals and they have nothing in common with the American man style.
