SOMEBODY NEEDS TO VHS TAPE THESE for future generations
I recorded every DBZ episode back in 2001 a month before I was injured. The old Zenith TV set and the VCR and some new VHS in hand once you insert it and press REC with the red light, you're about to keep and treasure these timeless shows for future generations man.

They didn't do it back then because they didn't think that they needed to. This is an act of desperation, and a half-hearted one at that. Sailor Moon, then an hour of DBZ Kai, and then Naruto, and even that is only on Friday? That's it? Where's Gundam/Outlaw Star/Tenchi/One Piece/etc?
They're doing this PRECISELY BECAUSE cable TV is struggling with content, since most of the important stuff's going to streaming, thus, classic programming is a good choice to fill the schedule. This is why Toonami Rewind is taking the Checkered Past spot for the Fridays.
You the consumer ruined cable, not the companies. Japan still makes it coexist, so why is it that Americans ruined it?

If you're looking for the Ocean dub of DragonBall Z and the DiC dub of Sailor Moon, you'll be sorely disappointed.
- Sailor Moon back after 23 years
- DBZ Kai back north of Toonami after at least 6 years
- Naruto airings off of Toonami

I gotta point out that both DBZ and Sailor Moon are not the original dubs that aired back then but the Funimation versions with the Japanese OSTs, in the case of DBZ Kai it's the latest version of the anime minus the filler from the original. Also slapping it with the OG Naruto is jarring af. I love the OG Naruto more than Shippuden and the OST was better in the original series, but i would have picked a Gundam series or Yu Yu Hakusho.
Sailor Moon has returned after 23 years!
Sailor Moon is back to television after 23 long years of hiatus for 2 decades. This was the very first anime (before I watched Dragon Ball, before I watched Pokémon, before I watched Digimon, and so many others) that I started with back when I was a toddler in the fall of 1995. Thank you, Toonami and Jason Demarco.
I remember when Sailor Moon first started on Toonami.

@@bradleyforney4520 That is true, as the DiC dub is no longer going to be watched on any network as Wildbrain owns that dub, but not the license to Sailor Moon.
In fact, Toonami Rewind is basically going to be the old Toonami shows shown uncut (or as uncut as Cartoon Network will allow).
I remember that Sailor Moon first appeared on television on syndication in 1995 (The WB!, UPN, FOX) three years before it appeared on Toonami on Cartoon Network.
Toonami in the AFTERNOONS? That hasn’t been done since the early 2000s! Even tho it will be apart of Adult Swim. But seeing Naruto during the day time on network will be interesting. I liked how they also used older toonami graphic before it was shutdown.

@@davidugono3727 depending on the time zone it might be evening or it might be afternoon. For example, a 5pm time block in the east would be 2pm pst unless they have a west coast feed
The fact that Sailor Moon is airing on tv again for the first time in YEARS is exciting as Hell! Although, I low-key wish it was the DIC or Cloverway dub of the show instead.
Well, cartoon network or those two don't have the rights to them anymore so they can't.
@@japan9690 I doubt any attempt of the DIC dub coming back is possible , considering that people kind of hate it for its inaccuracy. The only way I’ve been able to watch it officially was via the method involving piracy.
@@abbycollins Not only that, but the old DiC/Cloverway dubs haven't been commercially available in like 20 some odd years and stopped airing on CN and Toonami in just about as long.
@@abbycollins I have to agree. Also, Wildbrain is the current owner of the Dic dub, as they own the cartoons and shows DiC made, but they do not own the license to Sailor Moon, and chances are they never will get it to show the DiC dub, even on MeTV Toons.

Actually, I'm older enough to confirm that Sailor Moon lasted aired on Cartoon Network on July 5, 2002 proper, and the final airing of the DiC dub on US television. However, the Sailor Moon: Super S movie would later premiere September 13, 2002. The serialized show would later return a little under 22 years later on Adult Swim, as part of the Toonami Rewind block on May 31, 2024, as the VIZ dub. It will be like the late 90s to early 2000s all over again.
Someone needs to archive this so when we remember this we know where to find it!

In case people aren't aware of why [adult swim] needed to broadcast Dragon Ball Z Kai as part of Toonami Rewind, here's the breakdown:
Dragon Ball Z Kai is not only a recut version of the original version of Z, but it's also an adaptation of the Dragon Ball Z manga series, and its English dub stays close to the original Japanese translations. And if Toonami wanted to broadcast the original DBZ in the first place, they'd have to pay extra for copyright in order to play it. That's why you'll find 2 episodes of Kai in between Sailor Moon (ViZ's english dub only - Sorry, DiC fans.) and Naruto. (Original)

Just like 2012, it’s back but with Sailor Moon appearing just like that when it was released (so excited for the VIZ Media version)
Between this, checkered past & metv toons. Broadcast tv is having a glorious renaissance & as a guy born in 92 I couldn't be happier. Hopefully other networks are paying attention, not everyone wants or likes streaming.

If it's about the mangaka, you'd have to separate the art from the artist. The only other reason they couldn't bring it is due to licensing issues (if that exists).
About that the Yu Yu Hakusho Mangaka just so happened to get Married to SAILOR Moon's creator and I believe they still ARE.

Yes but at 1 episode a week it would take LIKE 5 YEARS to air Sailor Stars Episodes 164 to 200.

Great to see them go for a mix of nostalgia and modern by letting the updated (and frankly better) dubs air with the old school bumpers. Makes me almost wish I had cable lol.

It will be the uncut Viz dub, BTW. The Viz dub of the episodes are TV-PG, TV-14, and the 200th/last episode is TV-MA.
@@holdenmenard1312 that good we can see the uncensored stuff, I got the whole series on DVD plus the movies as well.
And also, not to mention, Viz media finally gave us episodes 2, 5, 6, 20, 42, and 67 in their English dub, which is something DiC never gave us, because they banned them, and also Viz finally gave us the 5th/last season of Sailor Moon, something that Cloverway never gave us either because of the too many objectionable and uncensorable content going on. When the very last episode of Sailor Moon (episode 200) was slapped with a stricter TV-MA rating, it left many Moonies questioning "why such a harsh rating?", well here's the answer: the show and the original manga was NEVER meant for little kids, at all.

@@jeice2226 yes I did but I didn't know that if they're actually going to be doing Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai I was just wondering but after I read a little detail with this article now I understand why they chose Dragon Ball Z Kai also to everyone if you guys are wondering why is Toonami is now returning to Friday afternoon well the reason why is because Cartoon Network ratings are not doing great and basically they've been going downhill so they're trying to do something a little bit interesting to bring back old school and that makes sense because MeTV TOONS that might be the only classic channel for 24 hours of 7 days a week it was boomerang was the denominator but not anymore looks like it's ME-TVs turn and trust me once that channel is launch Cartoon Network will be screwed but the one big question is what about Adult Swim they're doing great job well maybe in the future they might take over 24 hours but until then Cartoon Network is still keeping it strong and also the reason why it's because checked Past going to be discontinued Friday except Monday and Thursday they will continue they're not going away they're just right now taking over shows down and if you guys wondering about the Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack they're just going to be moving back to May 30th so don't worry you guys will still have your favorite shows

Toonami did finished the complete run of Dragon Ball (including Z, GT, Kai, and Super), but Toonami never finished completing Sailor Moon and Naruto's run on television.
Looks like we're seeing the engines of the Absolution MK II.5 again. Guess this means TOM 3.5 is also making a comeback.

@@Naminski1aso? It’s still the show everyone’s been hyping about because it originated it’s popularity on toonami.
I assume they went with Viz's redub of Sailor Moon not just because they're the current rights holders to the anime (and in general) but also because they dubbed the entire OG anime start to finish.
Because of course back in the day the old dubs didn't do the complete run. DiC only dubbed Sailor Moon and R before their license lapsed and then Cloverway Inc dubbed S and SuperS but then skipped over the final part (Sailor Stars) i assume because they found some of the content of the episodes too objectionable or something and thus didn't bother so it wasn't until Viz got a hold of the series about a decade ago that we finally got the complete classic series dubbed and uncut.
Aside from that, the old dubs were censored and particularly with the first two seasons. Given that they are airing uncut versions of anime it makes sense. That, and the old SM dubs haven't been commercially available in about 20 years and it's been just as long as that if not more since they were still airing on TV as Sailor Moon left the Toonami lineup back in mid 2002. That, and those two dubs haven't aged well to be honest given they were done in the mid '90s to early 2000's and reflect that time.
Actually, the reason they didn’t do a sailor stars dub in the 90s was because so many dubs butchered that season with their edits… that the creator, Naoko Takeuchi, basically banned any dubs from being made of that season for quite a while.
@abbycollins That's what i've heard as to why. Apparently it was due to Takeuchi's pull and influence as the creator of the original story given that she's got much more creator control over the franchise than a lot of mangakas have of their works, particularly when it comes to anime adaptations, dubs of them and others. So it makes sense there as to why a dub of Sailor Stars back then didn't happen through Cloverway and it took until Viz got the rights for it to finally happen here in the States.

Actually the ENGLISH 4kidstv DUB for THAT only lasted for like 75 total Episodes and in Japan it lasted for DOUBLE that at 150 BUT online not so LEGAL Websites added in 25 more DUBBED Episodes for 100 but that still leaves out 50 that never left Japan for it.

The only thing on this block that currently has my eye is Sailor Moon. Kai is tolerable, but i've seen it already. Get those views in, expand the block, add One Piece and some more shows, then you'll really have something special.
The East Blue to Sky Island episodes should be perfect for this block.

Yes but 4kids only made 330 episodes then ONCE Funmation took over they SKIPPED episodes 331 to 499 AND Only aired Episodes 500 to 580 on Toonami but its still like 1300+ episodes long 800+ of them which never actually got a TOONAMI dub.
@@veghesther3204 4Kids made 104 episodes out of the first 143. Funimation aired edited versions of 144-174, then uncut versions of 207-384, followed by the current broadcast of 517 onward (currently at 668 this coming Saturday) One Piece is only 1105 episodes currently.

And Full Metal Panic, Chobits, Fruits Basket (Both Original and New Show), Rave Master and G.I. Joe Renegades.
Even though I think they should've included the og Powerpuff Girls for the lineup (since it'd be a cool nod to how that would air on the block on several occasions and it hadn't air on Checkered Past yet), this is actually kind of a cool idea.

Pokémon is now on Netflix in the United States.
Disney XD has the broadcast rights to Yu-Gi-Oh!, while Pokémon is exclusive to Netflix.
Don’t think WB even cares about acquiring the licenses for those shows anymore, as long as they still have Viz and Crunchyroll to license shows.
