  • Genocide Pact vocalist/guitarist Tim Mullaney and drummer Connor
Donegan discuss forming the band after meeting through playing in hardcore/powerviolence/grindcore bands. The spark was the fact that they were both wearing Morbid Angel shirts, so they decided to start a band reminiscent of the 'Two from the Vault' series CDs they had (Suffocation, Obituary, Pestilence), Carcass and other old-school death metal favourites. They talk about their love for Necrophagist, Cryptopsy, Gorguts and Nile growing up but explain why they didn't go the technical death metal route, as they already had to up their chops for the band, anyway. Interview conducted April 19, 2018, while the band were in Toronto on tour.

This was a great interview, thanks! These guys basically remind me of my bros in that they seem kinda nerdy, and really down to earth. They seem like really cool dudes. I just discovered their album “Order of Torment”, and I’ve only listened to it a couple times so far, but I freaking love it! Just another killer album that makes me wish I could afford a good record player, so I could jam it on vinyl. Maybe someday... Keep up the good work, dudes!

Love their attitude. Write a good song, who cares about how technical it is

I'm with ya! I actually have a bit of an aversion to the word "technical" these days. If it says that I'm less likely to like it.

Agreed. The musicianship is amazing but those bands just can't seem to write a groove to save their lives. And that farty fretless in your face bass thing annoys the hell out of me. I love Nile though.

Honestly, I have a love/hate relationship with fretless bass. Sometimes it sounds rad, but often it sounds like they're just flashing it in your face like OH LOOK I HAVE FRETLESS BASS LISTEN TO ME GO!

Exactly. When Les Claypool does it it's badass. Beyond Creation just annoys me.
