Tong snapping at Wrathion in MoP was one of my favorite story related memories from MoP. It was so cool and unexpected from a seemingly random and silent NPC lol
Well, if Wrathion had played The Burning Crusade, he would've known of the uncorrupted black dragons led by Sabellian living in the Blade's Edge Mountains. But Wrathion famously skipped that expansion by not having been born yet.
There's at most half a dozen grown Black Dragons. Sabellian uncorrupted 3, the Red Flight raised a bunch of drakes. And then there's Wrathion and Ebyssian.
The acting by Wrathion and Anduin playing their 'game' was good. People undervalue the impact a quiet scene can have when acted well enough to keep the player interested
25:19 On top of the Horde and Alliance being separate yet teamed up, the night elves were also not even a part of the alliance, and arguably hated both factions. Adding an extra layer of evidence that "Oh yeah, we don't need to unite to cooperate"
26:00 And this is why, after knowing the FULL story and EVERYTHING he's done, this was the single greatest moment of the entire BFA expansion, hands down.
Wrathion is ultimately responsible for the death of Varian after all. The fact Wrathion dosen't argue back; dosen't be arrogant but just basically says "yeah. I deserved that".

Wrathion did the best that he could with the knowledge he had. He didn't know who he could trust. After both the Horde and Alliance failed to provide him with a dominant leader, he decided to create his own army to fight the legion. (Kinda like Illidan tried to take on the legion during bc.)
In terms of pretty major characters with little ingame back story, would be good to see a video about Valeera. She’s one of the og Warcraft characters yet is treated as background design throughout the entirety of WoW

@@jiriki1188 Several other red dragons. It was a horrible experience for everyone involved. Especially when the Dragonmaw's leader, Nekros, crushed one of Alexstrasza's eggs and smeared it across her face to show her what would happen if she didn't comply.
I am quite impressed you did not mention the fanfiction wow community who started to ship Wrathion and Anduin like it's a highschool romance manga during the pandaria events. It was so wild that even some of the writers had to step in to say "they are just friends... though...🤔 no no they are just friends!"
I love watching Anduin punch Wrathion. It also irritates me that (afaik) Blizzard dropped the quest chain in MoP was because they were discontinuing the Valor tokens and instead of just removing that one quest that required x amount of tokens and have the player move on to the next part of the quest chain they did said, "well if you got passed that part of the quest chain, you can finish the rest of the quest at your own pace." Or something like that, but it was somewhere in the middle so if you weren't already started it on it you would have to really hustle just to get over that one hurdle. I honestly didn't know Wrathion was involved with the time travel bit, so thanks for that nugget of info. I'm not going to hold my breath for any good writing for Wrathion for the next x-pac, Shadowland's didn't really do anything to convince me they care.
@@allanwidner9276 Honestly since the invasion that got his father killed was pretty much almost entirely his fault, I'm surprised Anduin ONLY punched him.
I'd pay good money to play a wow storyline that just... Made sense. The 3 worst things you can do to story-telling is: 1: Resurrections - Nothing matters, someone will always come back for no reason 2: Time Travel - Nothing matters, we'll fix it in post 3: Multiverses. Nothing matters and nothing makes sense
That's why I feel like Shadowlands is a permanent stain on the future of WoW storytelling. There's no reason to become emotionally invested in any character anymore because we can just go to and from the Shadowlands, no problem. Same with your 3 things.
@@Gorre022 That is exactly how I feel. Death has no emotional weight whatsoever now, seeing as dead characters are just as "alive and well". So why should we even care when someone dies? This Shadowlands concept should have never been made into an expansion. But now that it has happened, it's going to forever taint this fantasy world. It really, really sucks.
@@sevengaming2179 the whole idea of shadowlands per se wasn't that bad. You visit some kind of shadowlands during DK introduce questlines. When you are given the quest to get mount, you bassicly go to shadowlands and take horse from this world, allthough you still map-wise are in the DK starting zone. The problem with shadowlands is how it was developed and endend. You have this big cinematic after jailor deafet, where the veil is closing. And then you go back to Oribos and meet Khadgar, who is like ,,hehe, I wanted to explore death realm while I am still alive, hehe" and other weird stuff
I will disagree with the first one, resurrections that is. Since it's the thing that made Warcraft warcraft, like the lich king, the scourge. Medivh is resurrected by Aegwynn his mom. But it's extremely hard to do, etc. but it can be done well, and I think they did it well early on. Not so much anymore. Especially with the whole Queen Calia. Time travel on the other hand and multiverses are really the be all of "your decisions don't matter, and nothing will make sense." Hell, the whole afterlife-is-a-seperate planet is also kinda stupid. What the hell are night elves wisps then? not to mention the scourge and shit like that.
I will correct you. What you listed are the 3 sorry things a person can do to story-telling when done improperly. All of those 3 things can make a story very good, but must be handled well.
Platinum, I'm convinced that the legion writers entirely forgot about wrathion during planning for Legion. They ended up removing his role in legion cause it was 1. last minute 2. would've required more work. So they just said eff it and made Khadgar the lore center again and made a new black dragon Ebonhorn
I mean having this hidden black dragon in a place no-one knows about or goes to; hiding amoung a tribe of Tauren [who usually dragons do not associate with] makes sense. Oh; and EBONHORN is now the aspect. He is the leader of the Black Dragonflight. Not Wrathion.
Don't forget sabellian, he was god knows where in outland all this time and also fumbled the "i wanna be aspect" too and just agreed with proposing ebyssian as aspect of the black dragonflight lol
I like his entire conversation with Anduin. They were so young and their talk was quirky. They disregard each other in the most childish way possible. It almost feels like i watching tv drama, lol. No actual tense and conflict between them. One of them trying to act wise ass, the other was like the rascal kid who want to do things in his own way
They ultimately want the same thing, a united Azeroth. However Anduin wants to achieve it through peace and diplomacy. Wrathion takes on a "whatever it takes" stance. Where the ends justify the means. It is why Anduin finds a non violent method to render the Divine Bell useless.
@@jordanread5829 The end does justify the mean, there is a saying "heavy is the head that wears the crown", sometimes people have to take choices that are very hard to make, but necessary in order to win. But don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean you should always go for the most "immoral" decision if you have an alternative, just because it would be slightly more efficient, but i am saying that sometimes there is no other option, and you either do and win, or don't and die. The problem is more that wrathion was a effin idiot. He wasn't smart or efficient, and his "end justify the means" was just a coverup for his stupid af decisions.
I still love those discussions between Anduin and Wrathion in MoP. I wish we had more of that stuff. Just NPCs hanging out without really needing the player character around. Woulda been so cool to see Saurfang with Zekhan hiding in the wild during BfA f.e.
Blizzard MUST bring back the MoP legendary cloak quest line. For what end did they remove it? We’re just missing out on a lot of context for the character and a whole sub-zone from the timeless isle.
This is one of the biggest problems with current WoW. Blizzard wants you to play the game, read every book, watch every video, etc. Instead of just PUTTING IT IN THE GAME! I actually have all the books and read them, I spent a lot of time from MoP to BFA explaining to my guildmates just WTF is going on in the story. None of them seemed to understand.
Cant wait for the next instance of Power behind the jailer and the titans to Turn evil for the Sake of protection the people they crap on.... I Hope they will answer all the questions in Hidden isle 3.0
Tbf, the writing of the major plotlines is generally shit-tier and retconned each expansion, sometimes multiple times within an expansion. It's the smaller, more personal stories that are well-written and more deep, imo. (Seriously, wth was all of Shadowlands? Whoever came up with that concept needs firing.)
Idc I love him. He gives so much flavor and character that the game is completely missing. Also his design is something we never get in WoW. Kinky hair, dark skin, jewelry- actually funny humor. it’s Kinda better than the usual boring flavors. He also did have a redemption arc. I met wrathion in BFA and have liked him since.
The only good wow content, are made by third party content creators unaffiliated with blizzard. These alleged professional writers need to get bent, you guys are the heart and soul of this franchise.
While the writing itself is definitely a problem sometimes, the presentation of the story is really the worst thing in wow, it's all over the damn place, between books, removed questlines and whatever other convoluted ways blizzard chooses to present the critical plot points
Wrathion is one of the greatest examples of squandered potential in WoW. They set up so much with him that I thought was really interesting and then, when it all came to fruition, he was no where to be found for most of it.
I remember doing the Badlands questline to cleanse Wrathions egg during Cata, and thought it was really cool at the time. Since he showed up in MoP I always felt a sense of connection to his arc because of that, but still apparently missed most of it 😂 Great vid as always Platinum!👍
I got into WoW right in 5.4. I remember doing the legendary quest line and running across Wrathion and thinking he was such a cool character. His seemingly duplicitous nature and mention of the Titans and an ever looming threat was the thing that got me into WoW lore. I can say almost for certain that MoP Wrathion got me hooked into the lore of Warcraft better than any of their books ever did. Unfortunately, it didn't last long because WoD was such a shit show, but that brief window was really nice to play and learn about the extensive (and reasonably sensible) WoW lore at the time.
I still like the part with Wrathion been called a kid by Anduin (in Pandaria)... because in the end he was just a kid... as we saw him throwing a tantrum. Wrathion just became the "mastermind" of a self fulfilling prophecy.... and he has a thing for Cloak... so who think that he is going to have us a make a new one?
To be fair though ... and hear me out about that ... the cloaks he made ARE stylish. The average child laborer would need a lot of skill to produce something similar to what Wrathion did at such a young age. So what do I want to tell you with this: A new cloak would be nice yes.
In Dragonflight I really hope we get the opportunity to catch up with Sabellian and see what he's been up to over the years. Mostly because I want to see Blizzard deal with the fact that Sabellian is in actuality the rightful heir to the Black Dragonflight as well as the title bearer of Earth Warder. Also because I have it as headcanon that Sabellion begrudgingly accepts Samia Inkling as his adoptive daughter
Wait, I thought dragons didn't get their human form until they've had a Visage day thingy on Wyrmrest Temple or something like that. How did Wrathion skip that?
Wrathion at the start: A test tube baby who wants to be free of anyone trying to control him, whether it be his own father (who wants to destroy/manipulate him since he doesn't have the taint) or the Red Dragon Flight (in order to mass produce him since he's the only one without taint). Wrathion later: "Hmm, there's this weird juice called "Blizzard Plot Juice". I wonder what could be inside?"

Bli$$ *expects* you to pay for a boost for a rogue and to buy their merch. Money is all they've cared about for over a decade now. No surprise all the OG devs for them started leaving around this time
Wrathion is basically what you got when you try to pull out Bismarck-like diplomatic trickery while having no knowledge of how the Alliance or horde Works.
"But it's okay I'm sexy now" had me crying 😂😂 Seriously tho, now Wrathion might be my favourite WoW character now because of this video. Can't wait to see more of him in Dragonflight
Wrathion is easily one of the coolest characters to come out of WoW Hiss origins, his desire for freedom , him having to carry the responsibility of the entire Black Dragonflight and his wholesome interactions with Anduin really make you forget how relatively little screentime he actually gets Which brings us to how badly he's been handled by Blizzard. Their scatterbrained style of storytelling effectively ruined a character who could have been part of the next generation of MCs , alongside Anduin and hell maybe even Zekhan (Zappi boi) with how quickly he grew in popularity PS: I also love his little references to his relatives like "Auntie Onyxia" lol
He isn't a Warcraft character. And he's not cool. He is a token brown guy in a game that had no Arabian fantasy lands to have a turban wearring culture in the first place. And wrathion chose his appearance right after birth to be a turban wearer? Laughable. A freshly born dragon should be huddling naked in the corner afraid of everything. His attempts at dressing should look weird and unpractical, failed, and bland because he has never seen a shit before... Only after learning about others attire she should make his own similar clothes. That means flannel shirts and pants apparently. Ofcourse they could have partially gone around it by having people demand he dresses himself up... Then he looks at an assortment of stolen paintings in the basement and then chooses a look of one turban wearing guy on it. It would still have to be explained what place the paintings depicted in warcraft universe but we could then just have it mentioned to exist and it would be enough...
@@86Corvus i hate tokenism as much as the next person but apart from onyxia, black dragons have been using human forms with brown skin since vanilla lol, and there are turban cloth items from 2004 in the game. This is the most ridiculous thing to be upset about
Wrathion is such a jackass. He embodies the maxim of 'you don't have to be evil to do harm.' Anduin punching him in the face as a reintroduction is so awesome.
This is probably just a cope, but I kinda like to think Wrathion found a cave somewhere and hid his face in shame after he realized he caused the Legion invasion that he wanted to prevent I just think it would be funny to imagine him hiding in a cave in red ridge and drinking himself into a coma before emerging at the end of legion and being like “fuuuuccckk I gotta get my act together dude”
Didnt matter was legion invasion always prophecized best they can do is delay it not stop it and we learn everyone will are not their own upset that dude that destroy the light etc.
i did the full rheastrasza questline AND the legendary daggers. followed wrathion's story up until i stopped playing in wod. so as far as i'm concerned, i raised that boy.
I feel a sort've kinship with Wrathion since I started the game around the time when he made his first real appearance for all classes. He was also young and new to the world just as much as I was at the time. MoP is a tender memory for me, because it introduced me to the game, a shame a lot of what came after was a falling descent with only Legion as a brief respite. I'm probably going to be giving Dragonflight a chance but either way I'm excited to see how his story continues.
Did the red dragonflight really try to kill wrathion? Seems very out of character for them, and strange considering how hard they were trying to protect him
My bet is on them trying to capture him by force, Wrathion defending himself lethally and then interpreting that encounter to the player as them trying to kill him. I mean, you could say the writers forgot about this. But if Wrathion really believed that Red Dragons wanted him dead, maybe he'd be more antagonistic towards them in Dragonflight? So far he only had some sarcastic comments about Alextraza when it came to priorities on the course of action in the Waking Shores.
WoW needs more characters like this; instead of focusing on gigantic faction leaders all the time, they should put focus back on smaller though still important characters within each faction.
Blizz is literally not the same company anymore. If old blizz couldn't figure out that building new characters up would be a good idea before killing off Arthas, new Blizz has no hope
At some point Wrathion is going to throw his hands up and try to unite Azeroth under his banner. Becoming the dictator like the ones he fought and undermined all his life.
This was great, love the WoW lore, and your presentation + editing is absolutely top notch. The statue moving sounds under the player character and the mouth swap at 26:00 ,chefs kiss on that one mate !
The whole storyline with Wrathion is what got me into WoW lore to begin with, I find him such a cool character. Unlike Sylvanas, he *actually* feels like a morally ambiguous hero. He is arrogant, ambitious and not shy to resort to manipulation, coercion and violence if it means carrying out his goals. But ultimately he is a guardian of Azeroth and genuinely means well (even if he did a really bad job at it) I also liked how Anduin acts like a foil to him, someone also interested in peace and safety for everyone but a lot more hesitant to spill blood for it, I genuinely feel like they had good chemistry and yes, I ship them. Perhaps if things have gone differently, he could be that moral foil to Wrathion. Unfortunately between his complete absence from Legion and just showing at the very end of BFA, I think there's been a lot squandered potential. Wrathion is not only one of the only two uncorrupted black dragonflight, doing the duty they were born to do, he was also indirectly responsible for Three whole Expansions. *That is huge.* No other Black Dragon outside of Deathwing and Onyxia has had that much weight over the events of the lore, but neither he nor no one else in-universe seem to acknowledge this. Wrathion should have been this ever-present thing, just outside the margin of events. Simultaneusly mingling with all sorts of characters in public and orchestrating in the shadows for the benefit of Azeroth. Someone with a rotten legacy to make up for and the impulse to prove himself worthy for the task imposed on his kind by The Titans. A character that truly has a good motivation to do what he does but can still end up being an antagonist without resorting to the "LOL CORRUPTED" trope again. No wonder he expressed admiration towards Lei Shen's legacy. rather than disgust.
God, I remember that Badlands quest, and also when they introduced Wrathion. He was a super cool character at the time and it was cool to speculate what would become of him. Interesting to see this so many years later. I don't even play WoW anymore but this was fun to watch!
The one tiny semi-correction I'd make is that Wrathion actually was - regardless of your faction - interested in having Garrosh conquer Azeroth and subjugate the Alliance. He, and he freely admitted it, only changed his mind when Garrosh seemingly went bonkers.
So helpful! I came back to the game at the end of BFA, and had no idea what was going on or who this dude was that got punched by Anduin. This will help a lot with understanding the next expansion.

Wrathion did the best that he could with the knowledge he had. He didn't know who he could trust.
After both the Horde and Alliance failed to provide him with a dominant leader, he decided to create his own army to fight the legion. (Kinda like Illidan tried to take on the legion during bc.)

In case you're wondering about the "forced pregnancy" part, the Dragonmaw Clan captured Alextrasza and forced her to birth dragons for the clan to use as their mounts. By allying himself with the Dragonmaw Clan, Garrosh is considered guilty of the crime by association.
He was pretty cool with it when it was brought up, too. So, he doesn't see it as dishonorable, which is pretty damning.
Guilty by association is the worst thing to enter any sort of justice system.

I am quite impressed you did not mention the fanfiction wow community who started to ship Wrathion and Anduin like it's a highschool romance manga during the pandaria events. It was so wild that even some of the writers had to step in to say "they are just friends... though...🤔 no no they are just friends!"
And the coomers have only gained more influence since.
So this where the Tumblr style nonsense gained a foothold in the wow community
Ands there are STILL fan fictions and fan art about these two.
Anduin punching Wrathion was a highlight of BfA.
@@allanwidner9276 Honestly since the invasion that got his father killed was pretty much almost entirely his fault, I'm surprised Anduin ONLY punched him.
I'd pay good money to play a wow storyline that just... Made sense. The 3 worst things you can do to story-telling is:
1: Resurrections - Nothing matters, someone will always come back for no reason
2: Time Travel - Nothing matters, we'll fix it in post
3: Multiverses.
"Break his legs" part always cracks me, how casually he says it
4:34 I love it! 😂
He definitely has a lot of potential to become an amazing character in Dragonflight, I really hope he doesn't get the Sylvanas treatment
My favorite Wrathion appearance was in WoD where he just flew around Khadgar's tower for 2 years.
As someone who spent the ENTIRETY of Cata & MoP in battlegrounds it’s nice to see this lore.
Also, great job, this must be TONS of work.
14:25 perfect summarize "he is talking about loot, that is all i care about"
I still love those discussions between Anduin and Wrathion in MoP.
And then they remove the cool lore quests for the game because... fomo, I guess?
It be like that sometimes
I honestly have spent a lot of time on wowpedia to understand the lore over the years. Shouldn’t be as necessary maybe but yeah I can see your point.
"raised free from my fathers taint..."
I did not realize dragon males lay down eggs through their taint...
Wrathion is one of the greatest examples of squandered potential in WoW. They set up so much with him that I thought was really interesting and then, when it all came to fruition, he was no where to be found for most of it.
Well, maybe he realized what a big fuck up he did so he kinda just *hiiiiid* away until it blows over.

6:54 Absolutely nailed that feeling of finishing off any powerful boss after a short "HE'S WEAKENED! FINISH HIM NOW!"-intermission.

Wait, I thought dragons didn't get their human form until they've had a Visage day thingy on Wyrmrest Temple
or something like that. How did Wrathion skip that?
Probably due to a titan artifact messing with his egg.
Visage Day was introduced as a concept in the Fairytales of Azeroth book, right? Way after Wrathion's introduction.
You probably have two options to chose from, Retcon or Plot Armor!
He hatched before the faces of humans. That, and Fahrad may have helped Wrathion choose a visage, seeing as he was a black dragon all along as well.
Because he special
Wrathion at the start: A test tube baby who wants to be free of anyone trying to control him, whether it be his own father (who wants to destroy/manipulate him since he doesn't have the taint) or the Red Dragon Flight (in order to mass produce him since he's the only one without taint).
Wrathion later: "Hmm, there's this weird juice called "Blizzard Plot Juice". I wonder what could be inside?"

Seriously tho, now Wrathion might be my favourite WoW character now because of this video. Can't wait to see more of him in Dragonflight
Wrathion is easily one of the coolest characters to come out of WoW
Hiss origins, his desire for freedom , him having to carry the responsibility of the entire Black Dragonflight and his wholesome interactions with Anduin really make you forget how relatively little screentime he actually gets
Which brings us to how badly he's been handled by Blizzard.
Their scatterbrained style of storytelling effectively ruined a character who could have been part of the next generation of MCs , alongside Anduin and hell maybe even Zekhan (Zappi boi) with how quickly he grew in popularity
PS:
I also love his little references to his relatives like "Auntie Onyxia" lol

The War Crimes book confirms that Garrosh has been to the Darkmoon Faire. I can just imagine him trying to hunt that stupid rabbit.
I think he's a great character. Him being responsible for all these things very much makes sense if you gave a small child the amount of power he has.
Exactly. He was young and naive
"Oh hey, sorry about that whole planet destroying invasion I sparked but it's okay because I'm sexy now" *PUNCH*
You know, I thought Wrathion was just Nefarian magically coming back somehow. I focused so much on the loot the lore slipped past me completely.
Did the red dragonflight really try to kill wrathion? Seems very out of character for them, and strange considering how hard they were trying to protect him
They wanted to see him grow to be sure he would still be uncorrupted, i guess they prefer him dead than takes this risk.
They just had a very different opinion than Wrathion about how to protect him.
thye should have kill him.
I mean... his actions don't exactly scream "Uncorrupted black dragon" ... quite the opposite, so I see why the red dragons would try to kill him.
Man the editing just gets cooler and cooler every video, this is some of the most entertaining lore content out there
WoW needs more characters like this; instead of focusing on gigantic faction leaders all the time, they should put focus back on smaller though still important characters within each faction.

Wrathion: "Anduin it's been so long"
Anduin: 👺👹👊
So he is even more stupid than previously thought. Interesting.
The baby dragon is hilarious and funny! He's very similar to Lelouch and Light. I love him 😝
Wrathion does have big himbo energy.
So helpful! I came back to the game at the end of BFA, and had no idea what was going on or who this dude was that got punched by Anduin. This will help a lot with understanding the next expansion.
