the truth is, as much as this is a funny song, it contains genuine pathos and melancholy. The joke is on Dave Brent, and on Slough, but its also truthful and wistful. Ricky Gervais sees the sadness behind the mundanity of life & a character like Brent and that is why Ricky is so talented, and such a brilliant writer and observer of life
Have you seen his show Derek on netflix? Def a must-see.

his first foray into entertainment came early on when he was a young lad and created the musical duo, Seona Dancing. Just two songs released, one of which hit nr.1 in South Korea. It was very David Bowie.

Ricky I have to say I absolutly LOVE the show Derek. I'm watching it now. I work here in the US in an independent living facility for the elderly and this show is making me laugh, cry, all emotions. Heartwarming show. I loves old ppl. The elderly, babies, and animals, all have something special about them and we cherish every moment we have with them. I'm also a HUGE Office fan UK/US. And your golden globes speech was phenomenal. You are truly a class act 🏆.

I work in a Tesco Extra, not as convenient as an Express, but the fact he referenced Tesco in his opening line makes me smile! 😄
Think of it as a mini Walmart that opens late. We also have Sunday trading laws so shops have to close at 4 or 4.30 on Sunday. But Tesco Express is allowed to stay open late on a Sunday. I can't remember the reason why.

Great but I am a bit disappointed that this is not accompanied by a video.
Equality street was my fav song....but yer ricky I'd also say as funny as the majority of your comedy is...what's even better is the acting careers you have helped kickstart or even maybe bring back from the brink...most people you work with seem to be a handed a golden ticket to bigger better things

Ricky I hope you see this message. I know you probably get this all the time but could you please do a spin off show about Kev. Picture it? I must go on RUclips and look up “best of Kev in derek” weekly. It always makes me laugh and cheers me up. The possibilities are endless, there must be so much material there to do. You could make it as a documentary about him. Some low budget production by some “do gooders” who want to video the plights of a man who’s life is rock bottom. Could follow him around his hang out spots. Boozing on street corners, kids parks etc. He could have a bunch of low life mates too. We’re in a world of too much political correctness at the minute. Someone who’s as crude and disgusting as Kev would give these sort of people nightmares. It would be so refreshing. Hope this message reaches you mate ❤️
