    Ottavio Bottecchia.
As an Italian I'm proud to remember the great champion Ottavio Bottecchia (1.18).
Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour in 1924.
He won in 1925 too and for his temper become a hero in France.
Sadly, Bottecchia died in 1927 in misterious circumstances.
He was attacked while he was on training on a solitary road by someone who was never identified and died days later for the injuries.

@@nielskjr5432 Merckx didn't have a still upper body climbing style, BUT he got a lot of his power from his back muscles. His position on the bike was perfect though and 525 victories says it all in my opinion.

Fantastic photo's , amazing footage, well done and thanks. Question is, Will there ever be another Eddy Merckx, doesn't seem possible, they say his style wasn't the prettiest but my God you can see the power and determination that he put into every pedal stroke when he was attacking. And what about Bartali amongst the immortals, nobody before or since with a decade between victories, stolen years. As for my contribution, I'm in the middle of building up an old steel vintage bike, but it is going to be renamed in memory of the first tour winner and will be badged up as a Maurice Garin Galibier "midnight cruiser'. I will give it to my brother in law as a present, complete with Camapgnolo super record rear mech @ Bernard Hinault era.
