The metaphor of the grand tours being an ancient dance is lovely. Whoever thought to pair this footage with Renaissance instrumental dance music is a genius. Great historical artworks give you a nostalgia even if you never experienced it or weren’t even alive then. This film does that. Thank you for sharing this.
What an era! Incroyable ! these domestiques/ waterboys were robbed but the character and strength of will is admirable. The fealty to their king, the soldiering attitude makes today's racers look tame, and pampered by comparison. i love the panache and mayhem of the rest stops most of all, along with the kisses from the old men to the riders! My wife is French so I spend a lot of time there and physical affection between men does not have the connotation it has in North America. We should have more joi de vivre !
Totally agree, bring back the joie de vivre. I have a 14 year old son and nothing stops me from regularly giving him a big hug and a kiss, sport takes itself way too seriously these days.
1:40 I can not recognize this rider...looks like Roger De Vlaemink, but I think might be someone else. These are precious images which give cycling a real "human" soul, when Technologies had not overthrown it, yet, and riders did find a simple way to enjoy their long hours on a saddle. They were no whimsical, no snooty, no shiftless! Dope hadn't shown yet, and riders had no ruse to hide! But when obnoxious "doctors" got up on the stage, cycling went through a very hard time.
What a beautiful time then. Eddy Merckx = "The Cannibal" they give at him this Nickname because Eddy it was the Greatest Winner 🏆 of the History of Cycling, because he takes the one Victory to another (!). In his Great Carrier he has over than 500 Victories Totally (!). Also his son Axel Merckx it was at the podium of Olympic Games in Greece Athens 2004 at the Third place bronze metal (!). Eddy Merckx Always on 🌹🔝🌹 🏆🚴🏆👩🚀👍
this is 1973 not 1974. Gimondi won the world championship road race in 1973 and would have been in the rainbow jersey in 1974. In the video, Marino Basso is wearing the rainbow jersey which he won in 1972.
Must have been the Giro '73. Not 74. Marino Basso is the world champion. Gimondi Italian champion. Later in Barcelona Gimondi became world champion. He arrived with Merckx, Maertens and Ocana. How Belgium could lose that one is a true mystery.

Lmfao they all looked like farmer dudes on bicycles. Christ pro cycling has become an embarrassment. Look at them going into a coffee shop for bathroom break rofl!!!
I know they cycle for hundreds of miles but clammy wet socks and shoes and clothes as well...sounds awful....plenty of water to drink sounds better. Just sayin.....
the golden years...when it was more than just a competitive sport...it was filled with character and flair..community spirit....

Brilliance in every aspect of filmmaking.
Those domestiques are freaking highway robbers!
they were enjoying themselves and sharing.👌
Pirates. Merckx, Gimondi, de Vlaeminck. Killer medieval soundtrack, too.
Back then grand tours were about 1000km longer than the modern versions .
Cycling in its best years
Just gold
I migliori giorni del ciclismo.

Oozes with atmosphere! Will never be the same, let that sink in...@1:36
Love it.
bellissimo, thank you for sharing
Bellissimo!
Very emotional sharing food and drinks....
Ah, our beautiful sport ☺🚲
Quarantine has its highlights....youtube is one of it.
Qeul charme

The first rule of bike racing, Eat! The 2nd rule, EAT MORE!
bons tempos.
Merckx didn't send gregarios back, he did it himself!
Spot Rigolo

Right on! 👍
Excactly! 👍
The antics must be on the controlled (pre-race) portion and / or last day of the race as is traditional. Glass juice bottles - crikey...

So chilled compared with todays cut-throat attitude
what is that orange beverage ?

From what movie is this clip? It looks like "Stars and water carriers" but I don't remember the scene?
oh, 1973 was my miss numbering.
I corrected it.
This clip is from 1974 tour's movie, Eddy's last Giro d'Italia.
Thank's for your awakening ~ ~
Yes, I think it is. From the Giro '73.
Put a big glass bottle in your jersey pocket. What could go wrong?
07:28 hhhhhhh
It s 1973 not 74
Yes Marino Basso is world champion.
Jesus how much soda and mineral water do they need
Back in the day grand tour stages were long af. They needed as much drink as possible to not die of thirst
Can not be in 1974 gimondi was world's champion
True 1974, Gimondi won in Barcellona 1973, so wear jersey during Giro 1974
It's from '73. Basso is world champion.
what a mess
Lmfao they all looked like farmer dudes on bicycles. Christ pro cycling has become an embarrassment. Look at them going into a coffee shop for bathroom break rofl!!!
When it was real. Today, SO plastic. Everything......... The &^%$#@! bikes, riders, you name it.
The medieval introduction music is slightly out of place.
I know they cycle for hundreds of miles but clammy wet socks and shoes and clothes as well...sounds awful....plenty of water to drink sounds better. Just sayin.....
