Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour in 1924. He won in 1925 too and for his temper become a hero in France. Sadly, Bottecchia died in 1927 in mysterious circumstances. He was attacked while he was on training on a solitary road by someone who was never identified and died days later from the injuries.

Everything looks better and righter for cycling and racing once you go back past twenty or 25 years. The bikes, the frames, the pad breaks the profiles, bike helmets only when you want to, otherwise caps or bareheaded. It's a pure cyclist look. An old school look. It's a look I strive for in some ways, although I've never gone for sunglasses in sports.
