I hate that they called it 'observation' rather than 'interaction', it leads so many people into thinking quantum events are magic god events where you commune with the divine. Observation in this narrow context merely means interaction. The 'observer' can be a single photon being absorbed and re-emitted by whatever is being 'observed', like an electron. No minds are involved, minds (or rather the substrate they exist on) probably can't even be small enough to participate in any singular sense. 'Quantum' also doesn't mean space magic where anything goes, it just means we're dealing with certain discrete quantities. That's not a pet peeve of mine though so I usually let it go.
How much you wanna bet Humanity will find SOME way to make Quantum mean space magic where anything goes? We’ll just whack the problem until it actually works. Humanity can and will break and remake reality. That’s just what we do. We don’t need really. Because WE SIMPLY ARE REALITY! An actual scientist: that’s not how that works… Humanity: *Somehow makes it work* Scientist: *faints*
To be fair, the core concept is basically a what if on a misconception of quantum physics, making the observation matter rather than the inevitable interaction because of observation at that scale. If it worked like actually quantum, the bots would need to be doing a lot more than thinking hard. Instead we just have countless simple minds thinking "I see X, therefore Y", with X being an observable phenomenon, and Y a desired outcome. Applied theology likely connects the dots between what's effectively mass produced prayer and mathematics that would need to cover both quantum and astronomical scales to not accidentally a black hole or something.
Better yet, it's one that I've seen misunderstood hundreds of times by math educators and multiple times in ACTUAL SCIENCE PAPERS. It's an embarrassment, seriously. "Observation" should be one of the most discussed and deeply studied things in all of physics.
