That is interesting. While I would love to take credit for making the reference. But sadly I cannot. Because when I wrote the story, I did not specifically think about those stories. However, I have read a plethora of folktales, religious texts, and legends. So some part of my brain must have thought about Cartaphilus and Aswatthama while writing that section.

For example a Twilight sparkle powerful enough to crush an Xcom chryssalid, and then later turn a good chunck of their army to stone.

The alien technology. It's limited to a special kind of their species that can alter reality with their thoughts. Most of their species do not have this power. They assume that the story tellers of a species are the ones with this gift, not realizing that every human is capable of telling a story.

40k is a _huge_ thing in all of Eastern Europe from what I understand, so it make sense.
