Thank you! I'd successfully Option-clicked Exclude, but then my shape and text disappeared, and I couldn't figure what had gone wrong. Your fix at 03:12 gave me the solution. Thanks again!
Ok, this solution doesn't work with strokes. So, you have two choices - first one is to expand your rectangle so that the stroke becomes a filled shape and progress as for this video. Second option is to place text over the stroke and above it on the layer stack (the text MUST BE WHITE OR BLACK). Select both the shape and the text and open the Transparency Panel by selecting Window - Transparency. Click the Make Mask button then disable the Clip checkbox and click Invert Mask if the text is white (if it is black then leave unchecked). NOW BEFORE YOU EXIT THIS DIALOG - THIS IS REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT - click the leftmost thumbnail in the dialog to target it so you go back to working on the shape (and so you don't stay on the mask which would be a very bad thing indeed!) Let me know how you go?
What file format are you using to send to your printer? I wonder if that is causing issues. Also, you should convert your text to outlines or expand it before sending it - are you doing this? I know this video is about editable text but, when you are preparing a file for a printer, typically you won't want to send them something with editable text - instead it should be just a regular shape.
So, If you want to tell me what “not working“ actually means I might be able to help you. At what point in this video are things not working for you? Because there’s absolutely no reason why it should not work. If you can tell me where it is failing I can maybe point you to a solution.
That's what i looking for! Thank you! Everybody else talking about Create Outlines what is so inconvenient!
Glad it was helpful! I know, so many people just don't understand that you don't need to convert text most of the time.

Hi Helen, I want to create outlines to send to a screen printer, when I do this it fills it back in. Any work around?
