@iandemagi Yes! A decent rubber is required for all of the basic strokes we teach.
@Gustav1455 Congratulations. It's nice to know that we are helping people out there. Keep working hard and you'll get even better.
@Musickia Thanks for the kind words. It is nice to know that our videos are helping people.
@jinlisahonyc Thanks! I'm glad you are finding our videos useful.
@thedoctorthemaster You can do similar things against a fast topspin too. Generally a faster shot will not have as much topspin so you need to vary your stroke to allow for this. Also as the ball is traveling faster you probably don't need to punch the ball as much as you don't need to generate more speed. The counter topspin is also difficult to make because the ball is coming at you faster. So a good option is to use a standard block against a fast topspin.

@COUNTRYLAPI Welcome back to the game. Glad to see you setting some goals for yourself. If you need any help then let us know. We've got an ask the coach section on our website where you can ask any Table Tennis questions and read other peoples.
Good luck getting to 1500!
@yobmas722 Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad we could help you out. Make sure you check out our website as we have a lot of resources on there. For instance you can use the ask the coach section and ask us any Table Tennis question.
Good luck with your Table Tennis.
@salkstap That is difficult to answer. It really depends a lot on your current level. However it does take a long time to learn. Just keep practicing and it will come.
Probably the best group that offers Table Tennis coaching.
Thank you for this tutorial it was very useful. I can beat my cocky coworkers now.
When you're back from the table you have a few options. If wish to be attacking you can play a topspin against topspin. If wish to be defensive you can play a chop stroke. We have videos on both of these on our website.
It can be difficult. I would suggest trying to use a very relaxed grip and block the ball back as a start. We talk about this in the video.
@greekmaxi Thanks for the kind words about our videos. It sounds like you need quite a detailed answer. The best place to ask such a question is on the Ask the Coach section of our website. Try there and we'll see if we can help you out.
@olfikpl Glad you liked it.
If the ball has a lot of topspin, it can be difficult to chop. And if you are close to the table you can't do this effectively off such a spinny topspin.
If you are a defensive player you can certainly chop the ball. We have some lessons on this as well on our website.
@lastxp Some players do this. It is very difficult to execute. I've seen Ma Lin do it brilliantly a number of times.
@zubairaliamirali great to hear.
It really depends on the situation, how well you play each technique and your opponent. Experiment with all 3 and see which works the best for you against various opponents.
@salkstap It certainly does take a lot of practice.
@harry1549 As the long pimples doesn't have much friction, you need to use a different technique using this rubber. Often people try to chop the ball when using long pimples. Try using the Ask the Coach section of our website as we have more room there to answer your questions in detail.
@abed83a thanks for letting us know. I'm glad it helped you out. Take a look at our website as we have a lot more lessons and other sections of the website which I hope you can benefit from.
@Irfan87 Yeah we are quite biased towards the shakehand grip. This is because most players in Australia (where I am from) are shakehand players so that is what we are most familiar with.
Pingskills! Thank so much for those videos, i did get many Medals in table tennis! When Serve, and block and chop! Thank you.
Great video Guys! shows three really good options and progressive responses. One thing advanced players my take for granted that could be helpful here would be mentioning how important it is to saying down, not move you head a bunch, or not tensing up or be surprised by the change of pace when receiving this shot. especially for middle lel and beginners. One big reason why slow spiny topspin shots are effective in game play (besides it's heavy spin) is because its a change of pace from a more direct topspin shot. It can break the rhythm of play. Mid lel and beginner myself included really need to stay down and relaxed if the want to have any type of consistency at any of the three options. Pretty basic I know but Still worth mentioning.
Good points Grant.

pingskills really gives sound and professional techniques and advices...i'm sure this will greatly improve my play...thanks for the upload....peace!
If someone with normal rubber blocks the ball, it will come back with a little bit of topspin on it. If the counter topspin it, it will come back with lots of topspin on it. This means the ball is rotating forwards off your opponents stroke.
OK. To counter the top spin you need to angle your bat forwards. You could try this and attempt to just guide the ball back. Did you take a look on our website at the topspin against topspin video?
We film answers to question that have been asked on our website and then voted upon by our premium members. If you'd like you can ask this question on the website and hope that people vote for it.
@sai0024 You're welcome.
@jayhawker97 You're welcome!
you guys are great! thanks to pingskills i am now member of a tabletennis club!
Thank you for the videos. I watched before our competitions and we got the title "CHAMPION" !
Thank you for this info, yet I still have trouble knowing how I should angle my paddle according to the opponents sidespin topspin
these guys really give great advices and tips....i have learned so much just by practicing what these guys been sharing in their videos...nice job pingskills....peace yah all guys!
Excellent explanation. Though I can do the first two types. But it sometime works sometime does not. Because I was not sure what exactly I am supposed to do. Now, I know. Hope I will be able to emulate it, first in practice and then in match. Thanks a lot.
yes, this is a very good video, so many people at my old club tell me to hold the paddle very firm when blocking or hitting, and it just made matters worse. A soft loose grip i thought was better, and you have just confirmed that. Thank you. A relaxed musscle also moves much quicker then a tense one.
Hi Alois and Jeff ! I love your videos. Keep going through them from time to time. Can you make a video on how to develop a 'brushing' contact when play forehand or backhand topspin ? If a video exists already - can you pls. share the link ? Would be very helpful for me... thanks a lot.
Great suggestion Akshay. We'll try to do this in the coming months!
Thanks! I never knew how to properly counter topspin and now I do! Subscribed!
@maxk880 Do you have pimples on both sides or would you only defend like this on the backhand side?
Hello Coach Alois and Jeff, thanks a lot for your interesting videos . Really helpful . What I like about your videos is that ,you not only explain the ‘how’ but also ‘why’ which makes a lot of sense and the understanding of the rationale behind the shots ! Keep going ! 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for your kind words. Keep enjoying your table tennis!
Excellent Video...I played the game at a reasonable level and would recommend anyone taking up the game to watch these videos....Everything is simplified and you will learn a lot about the game....practice with these tips and you will see your game improve at an incredible rate...Keep the good work up guys
Thanks Gavin Courtney.
dear alois and jeff..., thanks for posting this vid. now i know what to do when a ball with heavy topsin comes..... thanks and more power to you guys from yobmas722.
Wow, fantastic video guys. You've taught me so much from your other videos. And it just keeps coming!
Due to the topspin your opponent has put on the ball, you don't need to brush upwards as you would against a backspin ball. You need to angle your bat to counter the spin and while still brushing the ball, swing forward. So think forward rather than lift for this stroke.
I looked up this tutorial because I got killed tonight by a guy who threw me spiny topspin loops. Every time I made contact the ball flew over the table. Some of my shots got close to landing on the table but none actually landed. It was so frustrating. I played him off the table, but now I'm going to try you guys techniques and step in closer to handle the topspin. Thanks guys!!
+Overseer Kevin Excellent. Let me know how it goes next time you play him.
Thank you. I am learning so much from you both.
Thanks pingskills for your quick reply , These are all slow and loopy topspin when I tried to hit it goes over table , Could you please share video .. It will be really help me lot ...
@hiicoolman You're welcome. Make sure you check out our website. We've got heaps of great videos available there.
thank you so much....it is very very very helpful...i was so confused with my opponent with that shot....now i think i can get him this time...
once again thank you very much!
Very useful video. I do feel that in a match if the topspin is at the end of table then block should be done passively ie soft hands but if it lands inside the table then should be punched while if heavy topspin trajectory is low then should be counter topspin
Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thank you so much for this worthy lesson both the coaches😊.
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped.
Great and easy understanding, Thank you so much for making the video
Never really used that punch, but I would say it is more difficult than the block! Thank you for the video!!!
@arniejerome12 Well done. Make sure you take a look at our website. We've got heaps more lessons available to help you improve even more.
Such a great video. Thank you so much dear Alios and Jeff😊.
You're welcome.
Thankyou really much for this video.
I am going to improve my technics thanks to this!
oh im just wondering too. if i may know, what is he's racket(rubber and wood)? thanks again for this very effective video:)
@pingskills thanks one more question in ping pong what strategy is better the atack or the defence?
Thanks
Hello from France, i am a very good blocker and i would suggest this for a soft block. Yes the secret is the softness. you can do this with the first part of your arm but i have develloped something easy to do. on a soft block i hold the neck of my paddle only with my thumb and the closest finger and maybe the following. the 2 last fingers are a little opened so they don't really hold the neck. with that technique the grip is very soft, and the block is soft and controlled, thanks regards
Thank you so much for all your videos.... I have improved my techniques over the last one year watching those. One question though, with all the 3 techniques mentioned in this video which would be most effective in blocking/countering the loop which has a lot of acceleration (micro adjusted loop)?
One of my friends' loops gets real fast after the bounce making it almost impossible to send it back from close to the table.
Please advise...
If you are faced with a very fast loop, then I would recommend attempting to simply block the ball back, but try to place it well so the next shot is hard for you opponent.
You're welcome.
thank you so much for the lessons!!!!!! they're really helpful!!!!!
because of these videos.. i won in a best of 3 game. the score is 3-0.
im just 11 yrs. old & my opponent was 21 yrs.old. haha
these videos really help me to improve.
@maxk880 He is certainly a great person to learn from!
this is REAlly good material, thanks lotss
@jasron08 Congratulations!
The best pingskill video yet! ;o)
Just great, thanks a lot to Alois and Jeff! :)
Thank you very much Alois, you really saved my day !
You are welcome!
You're a great instructor.
@DaKrazedKyubizt
ohp, correction, he likes jabs, not punchs. jabs. he's REALLY REALLY good at jabbing. I feel like it might be a problem with my shots coming in a bit too close too shallow. What should I do as a penholder if my friend jabs a shot to my backhand side?
Great stuff! I will try this next time I am at the table.
+FedorMachida Last Good luck!
PingSkills last good luck
so you week never say good luck ever?
Whoops, that was a typing mistake. I just meant "Good luck" :)
PingSkills It's not a mistake, the guy's name ended with "Last", keep up the great job PingSkills!
Thanks!
@pingskills Why do you need to generate even more topspin when counterspinning it? Wouldn't that create too much topspin and the ball would fly over the table? Also what is the difference between a loop and a drive?
Really good video! Good technique.
hi alois and jeff how to return the loop from back not on table , I usually stay behind after returning chop so that I can return their topspin
Hi im using long pimples for my backhand and i wonder can i use the same method to block topspin too?
the best instructor on youtube so far... but why using broken balls?
What about trying to chop the top spin? I usually try to do that. is that a good idea?
@lastxp
You need specialized rubber to really pull that off-certain type long pips.
Alex, when you hit a return ball from a SOFT BLOCK against an incoming SLOW LOOP,
does the ball come off your bat with BACKSPIN (i.e. the SLOW LOOPER'S original TOPSPIN)
or does your SOFT BLOCK impart TOPSPIN to your return ball back to the SLOW LOOPER?
This is great. I must work on my punch as it seems the koolest.
@pingskills can you tell me how much i must practice to master the punch tehnic?
PingSkills has so improved my game that my 2 hitting partners don't come home to play with me anymore :-( I have a good loop going and they find it hard to return it. Up until last month, both used to turn up almost every evening. Now, all I get from them is excuses. I don't know if I should thank or curse PingSkills :-) Now I just lineup the table against the wall and hit out all by myself.
hi.i watch your vids a lot and they have helped me a lot.but can you tell me how to kill the ball with a counter topspin near the table like the pros do.they wait for the ball to reach the highest point and they kill the ball than.thx.
a slow top spin ball is good to give a hard smash to it since it usually bounces back quite high in the air with lots of top spin.
hahaha just have to tell you guys... These are the most enjoyable videos on youtube! I've Discovered a gem :)
I have a pretty amateur competition coming up that we hold every year at a summer camp. I'm usually in the top three, but this will definitely improve my game and hopefully I might just win :p
Great advice, you guys have a great tube,
+JAMES SHERRIFF Thanks for your support. Make sure to checkout the PingSkills website too :)
PingSkills will do , ta
Hi coach, how do I return such forehand when my opponent hits it slow and low over the net (and some sidespin added as well)? I find it difficult mainly because the moment the ball bounces, it accelerates really quickly.
So, my friend and I play ping pong a lot, and he's REALLLLYY good at punches to the backhand side for some reason, and it kinda messes with my head a little. Sometimes I can get a good RPB against it, but usually, i screw it up, especially because their nice shallow shots at a pretty good speed, and I have depth perception problems. Would you know exactly what I should do if I send the ball too shallow so that he goes into his annoying spin-less shallow punches again?
wow thanks for this tutorial! he holds his racket similar to hao shuai's hold hehe in my opinion.
Absolutely Perfect Guide.
I really learn from you guys.
Much much thanks :)
+AsianBoy You're welcome!
Jeff (the guy who does the topspins) uses Butterfly Tenergy 05 (2.1mm) on both sides.
Alois, what if my opponent hits this forehand slow and low over the net? I find it difficult for me to do the return because the moment the ball bounces it accelerates quite fast...
It is still okay for u to brush upwards when counterspinning right?
hi i wanted to ask what happens if i slice the ball - i.e i try and counter his top spin with a sliced shot which generates backspin? im assuming itll just make the ball bounce flatly for him enough to generate an even more powerful topspin smash?
Great help!
@tabletennisperson Nice!
Nice video. Thanks!
