Alois and Jeff, you guys have improved my game exponentially better in the last few days. And I was already considered one of the best players (but far from the best) at Hacker Dojo in Silicon Valley. I'm loving playing with the correct technique and this has dramatically improved my consistency - I used to be known for making a lot of unforced errors and my inability to return a ball 3 times in a row, but now I can match most people in forehand, backhand, chops without making unforced errors. And my defensive game is getting better each day (it didn't even exist about a week ago)! Thank you, PingSkills!
Thanks Cody van Beek. For some reason I can't reply directly to your comment. If the balls are going into the net, try and get some more topspin on the ball as this makes it dip onto the table letting you hit the ball faster.
This is awesome. You don't have to fully rotate your hips to generate power. Look how hard Jeff is hitting the ball, just using technique. I will definitely try to work on this. I am mainly a forehand player and have a weak backhand.
Very good tutorial! It's amazing how fast Jeff can hit those backspin balls! If I try that the balls all fly in the net, so I have to make a long and slow hit to get the balls on the table
very good explanations. especially the bit about how much hip rotation is needed, and how important it is to never forget cocking back the wrist before the stroke.
When i see you , i wish i am @ the ttclub , practicing again and again till Success ! Backhand Topspin is such a powerfull / inattendu rushing ball for the opponent . Thanks for sharing.
I love a fast game, but dam the chops/spins make it hell for me, I'm great with a straight game but chops make me uncomfortable since i don't have much control over them, hoping this will help me!
Jeff, what particular brand of BLADE and RUBBER and RUBBER thickness are you using in this video? The SOUND of the ball-contact off your bat is higher pitched than when I do the same stroke. I presume that's because I am still BRUSHING the ball too much and not hitting the ball as FLAT as you are, or as FAST as you are hitting the ball. However, I also thought it might be that your rubber thickness might be thinner than mine and so the ball "hits the wood" on your bat even when you might be hitting the ball with less speed. I remember about 40 years ago I had a bat with only 1 mm of rubber/sponge on each side and the bat produced more of a higher pitched sound than when I used my usual Yasaka Mark V with 2.0 mm of rubber/sponge on each side. So if you don't mind telling me, please tell me what particular brand of BLADE and RUBBER and RUBBER thickness are you using in this video?
This is great stuff. I like the emphasis on follow through with the wrist continuing to flop sideways at the finish. This is natural but unfortunately goes against what most people are taught here in America 😥 and seemingly in China as well.
great tutorial mr, now I am learning about this technique, for making simple of my movement actually, I like forehand very much(I often use forehand for every boll) but to day because of my physic no good any more, I try to take left boll with this stroke. thank's again
PingSkills I've been looking at this video few times and utilized this stroke myself. I've noticed from my experience that there is added power by striking the ball at the edge of the racket, vs toward the middle. I also see that Jeff hits it like this. Is my observation correct?
Hi Roman Adar, yes that is correct. Because of the action that part of th bat will be moving a bit faster so you'll get a bit more power there. I think players tend to find the "sweet spot" naturally with practice so it's not something we focus on too much in coaching.
Thanks for these excellent videos , I try and take away the lesson to the the table , easier said than done sometimes :) , I'm unclear where the topspin delivery is coming from at 4:15 , it looks like the ball being delivered is being pushed under the ball hence it's a mild backspin , am I seeing this wrong , confused but ambitious pomme !
Hi David, you are spot on. At this point Alois is feeding me multiball and is putting some light backspin on the ball. Keep enjoying your table tennis and keep up the practice :)
i have a really good backhand topspin but i have problems agains deep backspin ball ....can you help me, also i want to know some exercises for improve the footwork... thank u so much... love your videos
+IVAN DAVID ANDRADE SANCHEZ Thanks for the kind words. The deep backspin ball can be tricky. One way to deal with this is to take half a step back to give yourself some more room and then you can execute the stroke like we demonstrate in the backhand topspin against backspin video. You really need to make the stroke more vertical against the backspin ball but still maintain the brushing contact. For footwork, take a look at our footwork basics video. A simple way to practice is by getting your training partner to block on ball to your forehand and one to the middle and you have to move to play both balls with your forehand. It's simple but effective. Also on the PingSkills website we have a free downloads section where we have a training drills PDF which lists lots of useful exercises. Good luck and be sure to visit the PingSkills website :)
If the shot is working well I'd be hesitant to change it. I think though that how we demonstrate the stroke in the video is idea. It gives you plenty of topspin which gives you margin for error and allows you to hit the ball harder.
Not sure if youre gonna see this but, im not sure if im doing the stroke wrong, i just tried it today. I can make the ball go in, but its really stressful on my Shoulder. Is there anyway to correct this or at least lessen the stress
+Wil Reyes That doesn't sound good regarding your shoulder. It shouldn't hurt doing the stroke. If you just pretend to play the stroke without your bat does it still hurt? Try getting the right start position and the right finish position. With the stroke if the ball is going long then you need to get more of a brushing contact to generate the topspin. If the ball is always going into the net then you need to make the stroke more vertical to give it more air over the net, but again you need a brushing contact to generate the topspin. I hope that helps.
hi, i have a question that hopefully you don't think i'm too dumb b/c i'm pretty new to TT (super new to the principles other than physics class). i don't really see any sort of information of what spot on the racket face creates the most top spin so i'm assuming you'd suggest the sweet spot, correct? i know it sounds dumb but i started playing a few months ago and since then have played for about 2-3 months before ever watching videos for TT. so i know it's unorthodox, but i FEEL that sometimes using the dead spots of the paddle for certain spin types helps the ball to spin more (maybe due to leverage? idk; that's why i'm asking haha). like say you're doing the backhand topspin. would hitting the ball w/ the lower third of the racket face possibly cause more rotation on the ball since you could potentially hit it faster without having so much speed on the ball causing it to land off the back of the table? thanks!
Great question. To generate spin you need 2 things, a fast contact, and a brushing contact. Based on this the faster the bat moves and the more it brushes the ball (rather than just hitting it flat) the more spin you'll get. Take a look at this video regarding the contact point for maximum spin on the serve and then let me know if you have more questions about it. I'd love to hear your thoughts. www.pingskills.com/table-tennis/serving-secrets/contact-point-for-maximum-backspin/
There are variations of backhand technique. As far as i can tell, this shot can be played easily if ball comes to u slowly as if you are simply wating for the ball to come and just rip it off with this whip kind of stroke similar to backhand smash where you get enough time. Now when in topspin rally there seems to be a variation of it, which is like an extention of backhand block, quick wrist movement and adding more spin or hitting it through the ball and this action is small and quick and obviously not as strong as the one shown in video. Watched Ma Long playing backhand its different to what shown in video. Please enlighten me :)
Great observations. It is good that you are watching and analysing different players. There certainly are many variations of this shot that can be used effectively.
Hi Venom Ghoul, Sorry I've never used that so can't really say. If anyone else has tried it can you let us know your thoughts? It looks like quite a cheap bat so I'd be a bit worried about the quality of the rubber which will affect your ability to generate spin.
Take a look at this preview of our backhand serve video for some information - www.pingskills.com/blog/backhand-serve-preview Our premium members can access all of the serving lessons so consider that if you want to learn more about improving your serve. Good luck!
I make mistake sometimes and then ball fly over the table, can u please answer me if you are able where i make mistake. Btw your videos are great i learnt a lot by watching them.
Hi Veljko Milanovic, This generally means you aren't getting enough topspin on your strokes. The first thing is to check you have a good bat with decent rubbers that can spin the ball. Once you have that you need to work on the brushing contact to ensure you are generating the topspin. Take a look at our videos on the forehand topspin and backhand topspin against block for some more tips. Good luck!
hey coach the backhand topspin is okey we saw the video and practiced then its okey but the problem is how to send a backhand topspin from on the table as these famous players doing it like ma long jhang jike and othets
+Enes Pasha I think we all wish we could play backhands like Ma Long :) Take a look at the video Backhand Topsin Against Block, it shows how to play a backhand topspin from quite close to the table. Once you have the basics the rest is practice :) Good luck, hopefully one day you'll have a backhand better than Ma Long!
You can smash high balls with heavy backspin and that would be very difficult to return. However it is more risky than smashing with topspin which will also likely win you the point. For this reason most players will tend to execute a normal smash when they get a high ball.
It gets hard to play once the ball gets up high on the backhand. Our advice is to move around and play a forehand. Because it is up high you usually have time to move around. However if you really must play a backhand take a look at our backhand smash video - www.pingskills.com/tutorials/advanced-strokes/backhand-smash
They should have made another video on backhand topspin against backspin. The only reason why he managed to get that across was because the backspin is weak. Heavy backspin requires much more strength then that. Also, they also don't teach the more useable version of backhand techniques. Most of the times it is better for you to use your forehand for power attacks so such a big move is unlikely to be used, unless the opponent is giving is a particularly easy ball to receive.
+Rehan Riaz By using the backhand topspin as shown in this video. Any serve that doesn't bounce twice on the table can be hit back with a topspin and that will be the most difficult for your opponent to return.
+PingSkills I dont know why do we have to relax our wrist because if i would relax my wris then i lose my grip . How prevent it . And , I'm sorry for my bad english .
+Avci Talip Good point. Don't relax your wrist so much that you can't grip the bat. Most people tend to tighten their wrist a lot which is why we give that advice. If you are able to use your wrist well already then don't relax it any more. Does that make sense?
+Avci Talip He mainly does the pendulum serve. We have some videos about this in the ask the coach section of our website and then we also have a serving secrets course for our premium members.
It's a matter of reading the spin and then adjusting the angle of your bat accordingly. We have a whole series of lessons on this on our website for our premium members - www.pingskills.com/table-tennis/receiving-secrets/
Mero PKE The topspin is really important. It causes the ball to dip down on to the table. Because the ball dips with lots of topspin you can hit the ball really hard. Without topspin it's hard to hit a low ball with any power and still get it on the table. The topspin is also hard for your opponent to control when they hit the ball. It will make it jump up off their racket. Cheers, Jeff.
Hi Axami Wazaby, Yes we do, take a look at the store section of our website. We recommend the PingSkills Rook as a beginner bat and then 3 versions of the PingSkills Touch as the next step up.
Hi Cholinesterasa, You can use some wrist on the forehand topspin but I wouldn't focus on it. Just keep your wrist relaxed and it will naturally come through. Especially to start with focus more on your start position and finish position and finishing with a 90 degree angle between your body and arm and elbow and forearm. That's hard to explain in writing but watch our video on the forehand topspin to see it in action and explained in more detail. Good luck!
which racket should I buy 1.donic coppa gold 2.yasaka antipower 3.dhs hurricane 3 neo 4.any other racket under rupees 2500 if I am an aggressive player
You're welcome Tirupati Medepalli. If you ever have any table tennis questions then you can ask them on the PingSkills website under the Ask the Coach section. We love answering people's questions!
+Kanga Da Buya Try starting with our backhand topspin video which explains the basics. You can find this on the PingSkills website under Table Tennis Lessons -> Strokes & Techniques. The key is to generate topspin so that the ball will dip onto the table. Without the topspin the ball will often go long.
+OsAmADx21 Yes. Go back to the basics and concentrate on the start position and finish position. Watch our video on the backhand counterhit which you can find on the PingSkills website. Once you get that then you can move onto the backhand topspin. Good luck!
haha, You can hear the ball bouncing on the table though. This is actually the advantage of having a lot of topspin on the ball, it causes the ball to dip down and so you get a much larger margin for error.
+nafi uzzaman That is important but it's also about being balanced, nice and low so you utilise the muscles in your legs, and then using your wrist and forearm to generate good speed.
He said, when your close to the table, you haven't got time to turn your feet???????? Well that's odd, because whenever I watch players play a game, they're constantly turning their feet, whether their close or far from the table.
Hi Rik Wiewel, Thanks for pointing that out. I had put up a real subtitles file but hadn't published it. I've now fixed it up so that some helpful subtitles should be showing! But the old ones were funny :)
Go back to the basics, and start with the counterhit. Try and practice till you can get 20 on in a row, then you can start to play more aggressive shots. Good luck!
SayanGoko Having a good practice partner makes all the difference too. Find a hitting partner who is either an intermediate player or someone who is committed to learning the game like you are.
Alois and Jeff, you guys have improved my game exponentially better in the last few days. Yes, great to see another rare advanced tutorial. Quite helpful, thanks Alois.
Best ping pong videos out there. Perfect balance of technique explained and then shown.
This is awesome. You don't have to fully rotate your hips to generate power. Look how hard Jeff is hitting the ball, just using technique. I will definitely try to work on this. I am mainly a forehand player and have a weak backhand.
Good luck developing your backhand! It will certainly help you if you can make your backhand more of a weapon.
Ping Skills is my favourite learning site ! Thanks for all your videos. Keep posting ! We love to hear from you.

Very good tutorial! It's amazing how fast Jeff can hit those backspin balls! If I try that the balls all fly in the net, so I have to make a long and slow hit to get the balls on the table

Thank you very much for this video. I've been trying to get the hang of the shot for a while but today I finally felt like I had the technique right!

Great video I learned a lot ive been trying to work on my spin for some time now and I think ive got it now. What is the song in the video?
Hi Fred Benson,
I'm glad the video helped you. The music is called "Parasail" and is by "Silent Partner".

Yes you are right
the secret of a big backhand is to expire when you do it. All muscles are free like that.

Thanks Bonnie Ip,

Hi, my movement ends towards the table, and not sideways, also not that high. Is it a problem? i have mastered it this way pretty good.
If the shot is working well I'd be hesitant to change it. I think though that how we demonstrate the stroke in the video is idea. It gives you plenty of topspin which gives you margin for error and allows you to hit the ball harder.
Thank you for sharing! Great tutorial!
You're most welcome.

I like your teaching.

hi, i have a question that hopefully you don't think i'm too dumb b/c i'm pretty new to TT (super new to the principles other than physics class). i don't really see any sort of information of what spot on the racket face creates the most top spin so i'm assuming you'd suggest the sweet spot, correct?
i know it sounds dumb but i started playing a few months ago and since then have played for about 2-3 months before ever watching videos for TT. so i know it's unorthodox, but i FEEL that sometimes using the dead spots of the paddle for certain spin types helps the ball to spin more (maybe due to leverage? idk; that's why i'm asking haha).
like say you're doing the backhand topspin. would hitting the ball w/ the lower third of the racket face possibly cause more rotation on the ball since you could potentially hit it faster without having so much speed on the ball causing it to land off the back of the table?
thanks!
Great question. To generate spin you need 2 things, a fast contact, and a brushing contact. Based on this the faster the bat moves and the more it brushes the ball (rather than just hitting it flat) the more spin you'll get.

Hi Sir,Can you please make a video on table tennis stretching exercises
Take a look at the following episode of the PingSkills show. In it we talk about exercises for warming up - ruclips.net/video/xEhkWqiXANM/видео.html
sir what should be the contact point on the racket for backhand topspin ?
When starting out just aim for the middle of the bat. You can have it hit slightly towards the end of the bat away from the middle.
PingSkills thank u
There are variations of backhand technique. Is the Palio expert bat any good?
Hi Venom Ghoul,
Sorry I've never used that so can't really say. If anyone else has tried it can you let us know your thoughts?
It looks like quite a cheap bat so I'd be a bit worried about the quality of the rubber which will affect your ability to generate spin.
PingSkills Thanks anyway
hello...i still could not get the backspin, topspin serve and backspin, topspin ball. Both seems same can you please explain me

This generally means you aren't getting enough topspin on your strokes. The first thing is to check you have a good bat with decent rubbers that can spin the ball. Once you have that you need to work on the brushing contact to ensure you are generating the topspin. Take a look at our videos on the forehand topspin and backhand topspin against block for some more tips. Good luck!
Sir alois Rosario I'm an armerator which racket do you recommend me to use
Hi Eklavya Goyal,
We'd recommend a pre-made bat for beginners. Something like the PingSkills Rook which we sell on our website.
Thanks for traduce to spanish, is better understand the topics/Gracias por traducirlo al español, es mejor para entendelo

Sir it is able to smash long high balls with heavy backspin?
You can smash high balls with heavy backspin and that would be very difficult to return. However it is more risky than smashing with topspin which will also likely win you the point. For this reason most players will tend to execute a normal smash when they get a high ball.
how to play back hand shot slightly above the chest?
It gets hard to play once the ball gets up high on the backhand. Our advice is to move around and play a forehand. Because it is up high you usually have time to move around. However if you really must play a backhand take a look at our backhand smash video - www.pingskills.com/tutorials/advanced-strokes/backhand-smash
thankyou sir that video help me alot
Which song starts at 3:32 ?
It's Parasail by Silent Partner from the RUclips Audio Library. Pretty cool hey?
Benjamin Tros parasail- silent partner.
They should have made another video on backhand topspin against backspin. The only reason why he managed to get that across was because the backspin is weak. Heavy backspin requires much more strength then that. Also, they also don't teach the more useable version of backhand techniques. Most of the times it is better for you to use your forehand for power attacks so such a big move is unlikely to be used, unless the opponent is giving is a particularly easy ball to receive.
can you tell the most effective way of returning a fast serve in backhand
+Rehan Riaz By using the backhand topspin as shown in this video. Any serve that doesn't bounce twice on the table can be hit back with a topspin and that will be the most difficult for your opponent to return.
Nice video thx man
ViktorCi Cich You're welcome. I'm glad you liked it. Have you been playing table tennis for long?
Its 11 years now
ViktorCi Cich Great. It is a fun game. Do you play at a table tennis club?
No unfortunately. I should start though :)
ViktorCi Cich Definitely. It really opens up your opportunities to improve.
very helpful
I'm glad you found it useful.
+PingSkills thx for the answer . And can you learn us how to do the serve of Ma Long ?
+Avci Talip He mainly does the pendulum serve. We have some videos about this in the ask the coach section of our website and then we also have a serving secrets course for our premium members.

What's the song name used on the video?
I've found it! Tks!
Parasail by Silent Partner from the RUclips Audio library.
What's special about the topspin in general what does it add to the hit it spins it in what way that affects the opponents game
Cheers,
Jeff.

Hi Axami Wazaby,
Yes we do, take a look at the store section of our website. We recommend the PingSkills Rook as a beginner bat and then 3 versions of the PingSkills Touch as the next step up.
Do I need to use a wrist with forehand topspin?
Hi Cholinesterasa,
You can use some wrist on the forehand topspin but I wouldn't focus on it. Good luck!
thanks! It was a useful information for me =)
This is a much better video than ITTF's with Michael Maze, despite their advanced recording gear.
+Dieter Verhofstadt Thanks!

which bat does he use?
I was using the PingSkills Touch with Xiom Vega Pro.
When i try this, it always goes out. How can i improve that?
+Kanga Da Buya Try starting with our backhand topspin video which explains the basics. You can find this on the PingSkills website under Table Tennis Lessons -> Strokes & Techniques. The key is to generate topspin so that the ball will dip onto the table. Without the topspin the ball will often go long.
Amazing. Thanks.
You're welcome Viral Stories
You strike off the bounce? It's seems fast
Yes it certainly cuts down the time your opponent has to respond to your stroke.
Backhand topspin should give more effect, this is similar a backhand smash its necessary more effect and less power. What do you think?
I think there's quite a lot of topspin on these shots which is want you need so the ball can be hit quickly but still dip down onto the table.
Hi PingSkills, what kind of bat do you use?
I use the PingSkills Touch with Xiom Vega Pro.
Teach us how to do a megagangbangkillshot

Everytime time I play with my backhand the ball flies away
Any tips?:)
+OsAmADx21 Yes. Go back to the basics and concentrate on the start position and finish position. Watch our video on the backhand counterhit which you can find on the PingSkills website. Once you get that then you can move onto the backhand topspin. Good luck!
+PingSkills thx ;)
+OsAmADx21 You're welcome!
Laughed looking at the ones further from the table, looks like they are getting hit way off the table! :)
haha, You can hear the ball bouncing on the table though. This is actually the advantage of having a lot of topspin on the ball, it causes the ball to dip down and so you get a much larger margin for error.
Where is yr club
We don't play at a specific club anymore.
its all about contact point of the bat
+nafi uzzaman That is important but it's also about being balanced, nice and low so you utilise the muscles in your legs, and then using your wrist and forearm to generate good speed.
+PingSkills ur every point was corrrect...jst telling abt contact point of bat was missing....thats why i mention abt that...
+nafi uzzaman Cool. Thanks :)
He said, when your close to the table, you haven't got time to turn your feet????????
Well that's odd, because whenever I watch players play a game, they're constantly turning their feet, whether their close or far from the table.

Third.....
cant, for the life of me, get the hang of backhand
Go back to the basics, and start with the counterhit. Try and practice till you can get 20 on in a row, then you can start to play more aggressive shots. Good luck!
Thank you for the reply, I will try and do that

Having a good practice partner makes all the difference too. Find a hitting partner who is either an intermediate player or someone who is committed to learning the game like you are.
