When your opponent plays a short ball to your forehand, you can play an attacking stroke by using the flick. This stroke is also known as the flip. In this video we teach you everything you need to know to be able to play the forehand flick.
1. Contact the ball at the peak of the bounce
2. Get your wrist back to start the stroke
3. Hit the ball flat like a mini smash
4. Adjust the angle of your bat depending on the spin
5. Move your right foot under the table (left foot if left handed)

You two are doing the best videos, with the best explanaition on RUclips. So please keep on, I love to see more from you.
Thanks for your kind words. Make sure to take a look at the PingSkills website too :)
I love this move. I tried this today, against a slow, shallow topspin serve and had great results. It takes a lot of practice and I definitely made some errors. Hopefully, I can try the flick tomorrow on a friend that uses shallow backspin serves. I hate those serves. Very frustrating for me. Thanks a lot guys!
You're welcome!
This was a very enjoyable table tennis training lesson. You made me laugh and smile with your humor and personality. You are very friendly and charming.
Best source of knowledge. Thank you. These videos are exponentially making me better.
I really like that you explain in every video how to do the different mechanics step by step. The videos are very helpful and easy to understand! Thanks for all the tricks, with your videos I already won matches I wouldn't without your help!
+steffen234fly Well done. It's great to hear that we are helping you! Keep working on your game and I'm sure you'll keep improving.
That's right Manfred R.
If the ball is lower than the net you can flick the ball but only slowly because you won't be able to get the ball up over the net and still drop on the table if you hit it to fast. If it's low you'd be better off using a short push return, or the banana flick which allows you to get more topspin. But really if you want to flick try to get the ball at the top of the bounce. It will make it much easier.
PingSkills
Thanks
Ping skills I want to make a new serve please give me video for a good serve
Hi Ricky,
There are a number of ways to practice backhands down the line. You can start just by playing backhand to forehand with your practice partner. As a separate exercise you could play one ball to your partner's backhand and one to their forehand. Have them only play to your backhand.
Very good instructional video's. 62 yrs old and wishing I would have had instruction like this 50 year ago. These are good for getting the young people up to speed. Then we have someone to play with..
It's great to hear you are enjoying the videos. The Internet certainly is a wonderful thing. It's amazing what you can learn now that would have been much more difficult before.
table tennis will become a famous sports one day because of you awesome guys. Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words.
Excellent explanation and demonstration...VERY helpful!
I’ve been looking for a way to attack the short 3rd ball with backspin. Thanks for the explanations as to why I’ve been putting them into the net. The wrist is the key here. Thanks so mucn
I'm glad it helped. Keep practicing!
very good explanations..
these tips are helping a lot when I play with friends, especially back hand flip stroke.
nice videos guys.. keep it up
The quality of Australian sport is high. These instructions are spot on. Cheers PSkzz
Thanks for your support.
I have quite a positive opinion about the forehand flick shot. A slight variation on what's shown in your video, this shot can be used close to the net with low balls with an adjustment of the bat angle; the closer to the net, the flatter the bat starting position. As a added benefit, this return proves effective when facing a cross table serve when the opponent (often) moves away from the corner of the table after the serve; the ball can then be returned just over the net as near as possible to the net bracket on the opponent's side.
The last couple of backhand serves were difficult to notice. I guess you have to look at the paddle and see the angle the server is hitting from. Thanks for the videos. These are great and fun to watch.
+FedorMachida Last Yeah that is exactly right with the serves. It definitely takes practice :)
Awesome video!Pls make more of these types and less of ask the coach vids
THEEXPERTGAMER12 Thanks. I'm glad you liked this one. We already have hundreds of these type of videos. Take a look especially at the strokes and techniques section of the lessons page on our website.

Thank you, guys! Another solid lesson!
+Nilan Kaluarachchi You are most welcome :)
great video. In your video, you mentioned he has to adjust the angles of his racket for the level of backspin. Could you give some tips on how to notice how heavy the spin will be?
Take a look at our videos on returning serve - www.pingskills.com/categories/serving-and-receiving
I wasn't holding my wrist back or getting close enough to the ball. Can't wait to try that shot again now. Thanks for sharing a great video.
+Stephen Garrett You're welcome. Let us know how it goes when you get a chance to practice this again.
+PingSkills I wasn't putting my right foot under the table either! I tried the shot using your key points, wrist back, right foot under the table, get close to the ball and I could immediately feel an improvement. Still a long way to go before I master the shot under pressure but at least the basics are now there to build on. Thank you again.
+Stephen Garrett Great to hear. Keep practicing :)
Great video! But do you have a backhand Flip video? it would be nice to see.

nice
Hi by watching your vedios i have won the national championship of table tennis
Thanks pingskills
Well done!
Apparently you don’t live in China.
Thank you for the superb video!
I still have a question: How about balls that are very short? Meaning they contact the table rigth near to the net, where its almost impossible to get a good contact due to the distance. So I almost need to jump against the table to reach it. If i rember correctly i see alot of player doing almost a jumping motion when flicking. Or do you reccomend to just let it pop off your rubber and give it back very short aswell?
Pushing the ball back short is also a good option so if you don't think you can make an effective flick then push it back short. The key to those short balls though is to step right in under the table so you can get close to the ball.
thank you!
when we are hitting the ball, are we supposed to be holding the bat tight, or should we just relax? Thanks
very good, learned a lot
Well done
Thank you so much, it is very useful for me.
You're welcome :)
Thank I think this is the hardest shot for me to learn can do it in practice but not so easy in match’s.
It's good you can do it in practice. Keep practicing and try it in some practice matches and then you can start bringing it into your real matches. Good luck!
At the mo I am stepping around for Banana or strawberry flick.
That works well too. That is what a lot of the top players do!
Thanks PingSkills!
+Jacob Baker You're welcome.
saludes desde Colombia ,me gustan mucho tus videos ,,seria posible traducirlos al español como otros que tu tienes
so helpful thanks
Wow, Jeff flicks so hard
Илья Минкин Thanks!
great video.
+himash kavinda Thanks. Make sure to check out the PingSkills website for more :)
Thanks you
Alois, it is ok to bend the wrist back (like holding a "big" tennis racket) on this shot?Normally it is a big no no.
This is my favorite video currently, coz Ive been struggling with understanding how to read spin. Beautiful. Can't wait to go practice. Side note: I'm new to table tennis n I bought a racket called donic, it has an adjustable metal weight in the handle ;-) (signed by a pro player n in his name) all fancy. I'm going to use it for a couple more months coz u advised me not to change rackets. But I reckon the stiga allround Classic with butterfly mark V rubber is what I should buy next, correct? As a starters awesome racket. I'm in India. Thank you for these awesome videos. Johny
I'm glad you are enjoying the videos and are improving your table tennis. Keep up the good work. The Stiga allround classic with Mark V sounds like a good next choice.
Thank you
Chien Cao You're welcome.
Ps: I like the music :)
Good video
Ong Jer Zhi Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.
Good
Hi +PingSkills
can you let me know how to play/ return this serve in this situation.
1. a back spin serve , that lands very near to the table.
i always fail to lift such serve and my bat hits the table or ball flies away when i open the bat to lift it.
A video on this would be soo helpful
+bharadwaj turlapati Wow, you should sign up to our email newsletter as we just sent out a bunch of tips on this topic. If you go to the ask the coach section of the PingSkills website, and then click on the Video Answers link down the right hand side of the page, then look for the video called how to return the Ma Lin serve, that should give you the answer!
The video shows you how to use the push stroke and you can find out more about the push strokes again on the PingSkills website under Table Tennis Lessons -> Strokes & Technqiues.
Let me know if these videos help out. Good luck.
Hello, Alois, thanks for the great videos! I am a right-hander but I feel it naturally to step forward with my left leg first. Is this bad for my balance? Should I pay attention and learn to step with my right foot first?
It's not bad for your balance to step in with the left leg but it makes it harder to recover, and I think generally you can get into a better position for the flick with the right. So I'd suggest practicing trying to step in with the right foot for a while and see if you can make that feel more natural and see if you think it is working for you. Good luck.
شكرا
I'm curious about the footwork here. Generally one moves their right foot forward when going in for a forehand push or flick, like you demonstrated. But when Jeff goes for the big hit at the end, he jumps forward on his left foot. I've seen many other pros do this. Does kicking off onto the left foot give more power? Or perhaps more reach?
As we mention in the video, it's usually best to go in with the right foot as you can recover quicker. If you are trying to hit a winner then you can go in with your left but as you are jumping right in it does leave you exposed if your opponent can get the ball back. Because you are jumping in and hitting the ball whilst your whole body is moving forward you can get some more power like this.
I agree with PingSkills. I honestly think that going in with the left is so bad it's never a good idea to do it in a match. One reason is that the deceptiveness of serves goes way up at the tournament level. Another is that a well aimed right footed flick is utterly devastating. Once you learn to aim it, you realize how many vulnerable areas there are - either corner, the elbow, jamming the backhand, wide to the forehand, etc. Watch some classic Waldner flips and you see it's about deadly quick timing and precision.
Good points.
Do I understand it right that you can only use the flick when the ball is above net level (otherwise it should be the "banana flick")?
in theory you can flip from below net height with more of an upward grazing motion... but this is like a weak loop without much spin, if you can manage to keep it low and short it can be effective as a drop shot, but if its high your opponent will smash it and if its long your opponent will loop kill it. Some people actually do banana flips from the forehand side as well, imagine you have to be damn fast to pull it off.

Hello PingSkills,
I'm a shakehand but every time I play it often happens that the ball hit the index particularly during the backhand counterhit. I'm right and I like the wide rackets because I do not want that the index is longer than the width of the racket.
That frame do you recommend ?
JacK Take a look at our video on how to hold the bat. It will show you the correct way to hold the bat when using the shakehand grip. Once you are using the correct grip it's really a matter of watching the ball closely so you can hit the ball in the middle of the bat.
Which foot i have to put front to play because my local club is giving practise in left leg to right handed pro players.....
Generally when playing a flick I recommend putting the right leg under the table for right handed players.
I noticed on the last stroke, Jeff stepped his left foot forward instead of the right.
Hey ping skills, how do I practice backhand down the line?
Malong is really great at this skill
+Tuong Hoang Yes, Ma Long is really great at every skill in table tennis :)
Hey!
I have a question how to add more power to your Forehand flick. I have no problem with the ball going to table and not hitting the net, but the flick is not so hard and after that ball the oponent attacks my flick with forehand. How cloud i get more power on the Forehand flick?
Get a professional blade and use Tenergy rubber, basically ;)
What part of blade need to contact the ball? Bottom or Top? thanks
To start with just aim for the middle of your bat or slightly towards the top.
Ping skill how to play a four hand spinning serve I have been playing tt for 1 year and services is the only thing to hard for me it is hard plz reply
What rubbers do you normally use
Lazo Ahmed I'm using a PingSkillers Touch blade with Xiom Vega Pro rubbers at the moment.

How to attack sidespin wide on the table serves...
Thank you good sir.
+Serkan Lunkaya You're welcome!
Sir it's difficult learning skills on line, do you give training and what's the process? I really wants to improve my tt
That makes sense. You do need to take what you learn online and put it into practice. The best way to do this is to join a table tennis club. Is there one near you?
PingSkills no sir there is no club and players
Hmmm, that makes it harder. You could try getting some friends interested so you have a group to play with.
Hi! Do you use the gripier side of the bat to hit forehand or backhand??
Often players will use the same type of rubber on both sides. If someone does use a different rubber, they tend to have the slower one on the backhand side.
Oh I see. So the one that gives more spin on the backhand right?? Thanks for the reply!
It really is a personal preference. A lot of people use the same on both sides. And some defensive players use long pimples on the backhand where they can't really generate their own spin.
How do you deal with extremely short and low balls that are practically rolling over the net. I find that it's difficult to reach them and I have to push them back very short just to get them over the net, which puts me off balance because the ball just keeps coming back really short. I've tried stepping forward but my thigh ends up bumping the table, limiting my reach.
+Drag0ncl0ud In this case the short push is probably your best option since it makes it hard for your opponent to attack.
Great technique and thank you for sharing !
+Benjamin Changanaqui Brescia You're welcome. I'm glad you liked our video.
hi, I have a problem with my hand actully with my wrist. When I do any forhand strokes my wrist shivers. I have this problem for 5 months. 3 months before I just couldn't do forhand drive and I didn't have any other problems with other strokes.I have been playing table tennis for 3 years. I also used wristband but didn't help. I visited a doctor and he told me to eat more suger. it also didn't help. really don't know what to do plz help
If it's a medical problem then we certainly aren't qualified to help. If it's to do with technique then we certainly can.
May I ask.How to properly care a racket how to clean them??
Can you help
Yes, take a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/DnEmm4dP7S8/видео.html
Could u do a video for a backhand flick
We already have one :) www.pingskills.com/table-tennis/strokes-and-technique/backhand-flick/
We are actually updating it this week though so keep an eye out for it!
Alios and Jeff
what rubber and blade you prefer?
+mohammad ali I use the PingSkills Touch with Xiom Vega Pro.
is the 729 hinoki carbon with a dhs pf4 in the backhand and a donic desto f3 in the forehand good
I haven't tried that combination. Hopefully some others will be able to help you out.
+PingSkills thanks for replying btw love your videos
You're welcome and thanks for your support.
qual e a melhor raquete que vc acha
+Paulo Roberto It really is a personal preference and depends upon your level. If you are a new player choose an allround blade with something like Mark V. If you are more experienced you can go for something faster. We sell some bats on the PingSkills website that we recommend but there are lots of good options.
Hello Sir.. You're really a nice person :)
+Joel Dann Thanks :)
+PingSkills you even replied to My comment :) hehehe.. Thanks. I love your videos.. Actually we have this make shift table tennis made of ply wood in church and the young people are enjoying playing it. I'm an amateur too and I'm learning skills from you.
+Joel Dann It's great that you have a group to play with. I'm glad we've been able to teach you a few things. Keep enjoying your table tennis and I'm sure you'll keep improving.
I'm using donic baracuda and dhs neo skyline tg 2
the blade is galaxy t2s
what's your appreciation?
+mohammad ali I haven't used that combination myself but it sounds quite good. Do you like it?
PingSkills like it but dhs skyline ,I do not feel it's fast
but it is very spinny
Thanks for the feedback.
I'm convinced this shot is impossible to do for me. Doesn't matter how many tips tricks or videos I use I can't do it on an opponents backspin
sir which is ur racket plz tell price of dat
I'm using the PingSkills Touch: www.pingskills.com/table-tennis-store/pingskills-touch
Please subtitle Indonesia
how to tell if the opponent is serving a backspin or a topspin?
You need to watch the contact of the bat on the ball when they serve. If the hit down the back of the ball or while the bat is moving down it will be backspin. If the brush up the back of the ball or hit the ball when the bat is moving up it will be topspin. It does take a bit of practice to recognise this.
+PingSkills thanks mate!
You're welcome.

You're welcome.
Bte
I want to ask
My opponent is smashing with a top spin very fast
So how can i block it
The real key is to stop him attacking in the first place by serving the ball short and trying to attack yourself. But if he does then use the block stroke - www.pingskills.com/table-tennis/strokes-and-technique/backhand-block/
5:33 OH&S :-)
haha
But, what will you do if someone flicks at you?
A good option is to topspin the next ball.
PingSkills Thanks
