    amazing video! my only question is that you recommend not to cross "center line" on the loop forehand finish position, but it looks like you cross the center line on the bigger forehand loop stroke every time.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  4 месяца назад

      The center line is really just to highlight not going across your body too much. If you pass it just a little bit that is fine.

  • @AANasseh
    @AANasseh 7 лет назад

    You said not to cross the midline in the forehand top spin but in every shot you hit you crossed it. Was that an ideal statement or a practical one as the hand crosses the nose in every forehand top spin I see in this video!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 лет назад

      The main point is to make sure you don't swing too low and lose the shape and therefore the consistency of your stroke. Also note that as the body twists so does that middle line.

    • @AANasseh
      @AANasseh 7 лет назад

      I see. But wouldn't the head rotate along with the body twisting? Seems to me the relationship of the cervical and thoracic spine would stay the same on the pelvis. Thank you for your reply! I'm going to become a member to your site. You have excellent videos!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 лет назад

      Awesome. Yeah the main point is to keep the finish position up high near your forehead. As soon as you swing low and across your body the stroke becomes very inconsistent.

    What is the best way to return a fast low ball top spin? Should I block or should I loop kill?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад +1

      If you can loop it back then go for it. It is a difficult shot which is why a lot of people choose to block the ball back.

    • @Khrylezon
      @Khrylezon 8 лет назад

      PingSkills... That's true.. It's very difficult to loop kill a fast top spin but very low ball... It always goes into the net or off the table otherwise... Thanks. I think it's better to block that shots.

    • @jeffplumb8870
      @jeffplumb8870 8 лет назад

      It's certainly more likely to go back on the table! But as I said, if you feel confident and can execute the counter attack then it's far more devastating.

      Between the middle and the edge of the rubber is a good spot. Having said that, experiment yourself and see what results you get from hitting the ball in different spots. • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 лет назад

      Nice to see you taking notice. The bat can go past a little bit and the stroke will still be consistent and this is fine as a technique. The main point about not crossing the line is to ensure you don't go right across your body which a lot of players tend to do when learning the stroke, as this will cause the stroke to be very inconsistent.

    I have got a faster racquet, palio expert2 and now i am having hard time playing powerful strokes. All i am able to do is block, or sometime play half hearted strokes. Can you suggest some ways i can adjust quickly. With my previous racquet, i was able to play so many shots, from different positions and now if i am not in position i always miss time it. Looks like margin of error is very less.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 лет назад +1

      With a faster rubber it can seem like it is hard to control but once you get used to it and are able to trust yourself to play full shots, you will then be able to generate the topspin on the ball which will give you the extra margin for error for attacking strokes. Take a look at this answer to a question and see if it helps you: www.pingskills.com/table-tennis-forum/adjusting-myself-with-new-bat
      You can always leave a comment on the website if you have further questions. Good luck with your new bat. I have heard it is a good bat.

    great information thanks. I've always had trouble with proper technique on my forehand. Just a few questions though. Does this technique change for close to table or far from table hitting? Also what changes for hitting backspin other than angle of the stroke?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад +1

      +Rocky s Great questions. The basic technique stays the same but if you are closer to the table you may need to shorten your swing a little since you'll have less time. And if you are further away you can lengthen it a little. Against backspin you need to swing a bit more vertically to counter the spin. Take a look at our Forehand Topspin Against Backspin video for more details on this. You can find all the videos nicely presented in order on the PingSkills website. Let me know if this helps out. Good luck with your table tennis.

    i have a question regarding the forward force
    are you using the turning of the body primarily for the forward force? or does the shoulder/arm also turn forward just a bit? it seems like arm basically snaps and adds spin and the turning of the body delivers most of the forward power? is that correct?

    • @pingskills

    In the past i have tried to add a bit of wrist movement (as you suggest here), but found it threw my timing off. Is there an easy way to get started with that? Also, I could be wrong, but is this the first video where I see Alois hitting shots?!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  9 лет назад

      +Zazen forever I don't think you really need to focus too much on the wrist if it is throwing your timing off. The key is to relax it and let it work naturally.
      Alois has done the hitting in other videos too. You can see them all easily on the PingSkills website.

  • @RobertoCostas
    @RobertoCostas 6 лет назад

    I've seen trainers advising their players to move the bat leg forward while hitting de ball. I think it's unnecesary if you correctly transfer your body weight from leg to leg and that it compromises your balance and the recovery of the legs for the next stroke. What do you think about that?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 лет назад

      It certainly is important to maintain your balance, hence I like the weight transfer not to be from your back leg to your front leg. However sometimes when people are hitting the ball really fast they can jump into the ball.

    So, Jeff obviously has a bent arm loop with his elbow bent at 90 degrees. Many others advocate a straight arm loop (Brett Clarke, for one). What are advantages/disadvantages of either? Its hard for me to get a lot of power with a bent arm loop. Am i doing something wrong? Thanks.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 лет назад

      HI Zazen, I like to have my arm bent at the start as I feel I get more control like this. A lot of European players have forehands like this. Alois though starts with his arm much straighter and more Chinese players play their forehands like that. If you feel more comfortable then start with your arm straighter. In fact Alois generally recommends this too. Great question! Good luck improving your forehand.
      Cheers,
      Jeff.

    Hi Alos, I noticed that Jeff's arm is bent at a 90 degree angle at the bottom of his backswing, yet most of the Chinese instruction videos I see (and Brett Clark"s) show the arm fully extended. Is this just a matter of personal preference?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад

      +Zazen forever It is a matter of personal preference. As you mention a lot of the Chinese have the arm straight and Alois generally prefers this. Some of the Europeans have there arm bent more. Do you have a preference yourself? If not go for the shot with the arm extended a bit and see how it goes.

    hi i wanted to ask is there any relation with power for this stroke as i have a wide body built and went to gym
    i happen to bring more power than spin what to do for this i have tibhar genius rubber on my for hand
    can you help me

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад

      To get more spin, you still need to swing the bat fast, however you need to brush the ball finely. The more finely you hit the ball (still with a lot of bat speed) the more spin you will get. Try to imagine a fly is sitting on the top of the ball and you are trying to brush the fly off without touching the ball. Obviously you do need to touch the ball but I think this helps illustrate what I am talking about. Let me know if that helps. Good luck!

    Thanks a lot great video :D. I just have one question which nobody can seem to answer, I get too much sidespin on the ball and players at my club say that is not a good thing. I'm an intermediate player so I can control the sidespin but I can't seem to get straight forehand topspin shots there's always a little sidespin to it. This problem is only for my forehand and i'm a lefty. Please suggest something I can do to tackle this problem.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  9 лет назад

      +Ahmed Bilal Getting sidespin is not a problem if that's what you mean to do. The sidespin is caused by the bat being on an angle and it's often because you've locked your wrist. If you try and relax you wrist then you should be able to hit the ball with your wrist not on an angle and get just topspin. Let me know if this helps.

    • @mayankgupta2543
      @mayankgupta2543 2 года назад

      And one reason which I think is that you hit ball close to your body when it is in front of you.
      To hit pure top spin you will need to let ball come to your side or if it is coming towards to your body you need to move away to make space so that ball comes to your side and there is arm length gap and then you hit.
      I think i am slightly late in replying

  • @doktorkumpel9691
    @doktorkumpel9691 8 лет назад

    I noticed that Jeff has a rather small snap of the forearm during his topspin. The angle between the forearm and the upper arm is almost the same before and after the stroke. He compensates for the potential lack of power with a good body rotation but it might still be a thing to keep an eye on for further instructional videos.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад

      Good observations. This can vary between top level players. Most of the Chinese have a longer backspin extending the elbow but some Europeans like Timo Boll have a much smaller backswing and use their rotation.

      The key is to get the correct start and finish positions, and then get the bat moving quickly between them like we discuss in this video. Good luck!

    Hi PingSkills! Great material about topspin! My question: is there an optimal ratio of speed and topspin rotation to maximize the magnus effect, means to get the strongest curve? Thanks a lot for your answers or eventually another video! Br Achim

    • @RobertoCostas
      @RobertoCostas 6 лет назад

      Close the angle of the bat as much as you can and maximize the speed of the arm movement. In case the ball still comes down directly into the net, move the bat more vertically.

    Can you tell me how timo boll and other players who have similar jerking the arm motion like action so consistent in hitting topspin continuously on the table because those actions are totally different from what you have taught here

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  9 лет назад

      +Aditya Srivastava It would be hard to suggest that players that good are not doing it right :) It really does work well for them. For most players though I think it will lead to some inconsistency and that's why we teach the stroke the way we do.

      +goelnarendra goel It's really a guide to help you understand not to swing right across the body. If the bat goes slightly passed the middle line it is not a problem.

    Where should my contact be on the ball in my forehand topspin? Should it be shoulder width, in front of me, behind me, next to me, etc?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 лет назад +1

      Put your two hands together in front of you. This is about the distance you want to hit the ball away from your body.

    I've an issue with forehand.. I've just started playing table tennis a year ago...
    Whenever I try to make forehand smash, i kinda brush the ball for top spin which means i can't hit the ball flat.. That's why I lack speed in forehand smash which is definitely not good... I've tried to flatten the contact but most of the time it goes off table if I try to be more flatter..

    What are the approximate BAT ANGLES and ARM MOVEMENT ANGLES that you use for your OPENING LOOP against HEAVY BACKSPIN? And how do these same angles compare to the BAT ANGLES and ARM MOVEMENT ANGLES you personally use for your COUNTER-LOOPS against HEAVY TOPSPIN?

  • @SK-qu4wo
    @SK-qu4wo 7 лет назад

    I recently used my phone to make a video of my practice sessions and I was dissapoonted to see that my tennis roots are still showing in my forehand 😐. I don't drop that racket head quite low enough (waist height instead of knee height) and and I often times end up finishing well above my head when I hit with more power. The end result on the ball is great but I feel like I am doing something wrong here. Is this okay, or do I need to work on this some more? I really want my forehand to start looking like yours and Alois. My backhand looks absolutely fantastic though if I must say so myself.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 лет назад

      Nice one. It sounds like you are starting to make good progress. I would keep working on getting the correct start and finish positions as they do help you with consistency. It's not too bad to be finishing above your head though. Often players finish quite low and across their body and this is what leads to a loss of consistency.

    Can you please tell when does the return to a topspin goes into the net?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 лет назад +1

      If this is happening then you need to brush up on the back of the ball to give it more height whilst still generating lots of topspin yourself to help the ball dip back on to the table.

    Hey Alois I'm a J-pen player and I'm wondering when to block and when to forehand topspin. I know Ryu Seung Min used (well he's a fat middle aged man now so he can't) his lighting fast footwork across the table to forehand topspin but he also blocked as well. How did he make the decision to forehand topspin or to block? How did would he come to the conclusion that he wouldn't be able to forehand topspin in certain situations?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад

      He was an incredible player. I think he tried to attack at every opportunity. Even when he blocked it was a fast block! I think that you try and topspin when you feel confident and have time for the bigger swing. When you have less time that's when to use the block.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 лет назад

      Yeah it is a rule of thumb. It's there to stop you trying to come right across your body. I think it's a good rule of thumb to follow especially when learning the stroke.

    Alois I notice that your racket moves a bit past the centre line. The same happens with me. Is that okay?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад

      If you twist your shoulders then the bat moves further but doesn't really go past the centre line. This is more of a guide and I see a lot of players moving past the centre line all the time and it makes the stroke very inconsistent. I'd suggest working on getting the finish position correct as often as possible.

    What about straigething your arm before the stroke? Dont you lose alot of bat speed without it?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад +1

      +Boogar You certainly can do this. A lot of the Chinese play the forehand in this manner. As Alois mentions though you can also get a lot of power from your legs, your hips, your shoulders, and your arm.

    • @Aizensama153
      @Aizensama153 8 лет назад

      +PingSkills That is certainly true. However is there a way to combine both to start with a almost straigth arm near to the body and thenuse everything together?
      Or do you think this technique is to high end and im better off with the technique as you have shown?
      Thanks for the answer :)

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад

      +Boogar If you feel comfortable with the straight arm then use that. Alois tends to do this whereas I tend to have the arm more bent. It really is a personal preference. In fact Alois tends to like the straighter arm a little bit more. So if you like it go for it.

  • @z0uLess

    does anyone know what this move is called? It's where you don't bring the bat up but you have it at an angle and you start fairly high. There is still a brushing motion but it is not going upwards, but forwards.

    Nice video but i have i suggestion,i ´ve been playing a cupple of years and i ´ve got more or less the basic shots.But when i have to play my body is very tense and that´s make me fail a lot.I dont know how to stop it becuse for me that´s the normal play(i dotn know if you understand me because my english is not that good but what i try to say is if u can upload a video giving some tips)Thanks :)

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  9 лет назад

      +zZDanylorZz lel Great question. This is a common problem. And realising you are tense is half the problem. Next time you practice really focus on the tension in your body and try to keep it relaxed. By focusing on this it will help you. Try it out and if it still doesn't work then you can ask me more by using the ask the coach section of the PingSkills website. We check questions there all the time.

      +zZDanylorZz lel As you do have quite a bit of experience your coach could be right. If you practice for a few weeks you may get the hang of it. Especially if you spend some time actually working on your consistency.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 лет назад

      I tend to start with my arm bent as I feel I have more control that way but certainly you can start with your arm straight and then when you bend it you get even more bat speed. Alois tends to play more like this. Cheers, Jeff.

    in a game I am able to hit advanced forehand topspin or simple topspin, but after the top spin the balls comes up high so, I try to hit a smash but that smash goes out of the table all the time and same happens with my backhand counter hit the ball goes out after backhand topspin or forehand topspin

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  9 лет назад

      +Rehan Riaz Have you watched our video on the forehand smash? The most common mistake I see is people not getting into good position when the ball goes up high. Make sure as you watch it go up you move quickly into position. Then you should be able to execute a good smash. Watch the video and the tips we give and let me know if it helps you out.

    • @rehanriaz5890
      @rehanriaz5890 9 лет назад

      +PingSkills yeah I have seen that video but the ball comes back way too fast so suggest some remedy for it
      and most of the player I play with just playing pure defence against me as I give them no ball to play shot against me thanks to you

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  9 лет назад

      +Rehan Riaz If the ball is up around shoulder height then you will have time to move into position for a smash. If it comes back lower than that and faster, then I'd suggest that you keep playing a topspin stroke. The more topspin you put on the ball, the more it will dip, and so you'll hit if off the table much less. Give that a try and let me know how it works out.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 лет назад

      Yes, that is really a guide to make sure players aren't coming right across their bodies as this causes a very inconsistent stroke. If you go just a little past then it is still OK.

    • @humgaga
      @humgaga 5 лет назад

      Thanks for clarifying. Another issue related to this, is the bat angle. Assuming keeping the centre line, do we need to worry about the bat angle when returning the ball?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 лет назад

      @@humgaga Yes. Try to keep the bat angle constant throughout the stroke. Watch what happens to the ball after you hit it for feedback. If you're always hitting the ball long then close the bat angle a little. If you're always hitting it into the net then open it slightly. Good luck!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 лет назад +1

      To get more pure topspin you need to change the angle of your racket as you contact the ball. If the racket is parallel to the floor and hits the top and back of the ball it will be pure topspin. To get the sidespin you must be hitting the ball a little bit on the side. It's probably good for your friends to get used to blocking such a shot!
