Her EP of these songs was the bestselling EP of 2016! Then she toured, on her own and opening for famous bands. And starred in a movie. She came through all this and now, four years later, she is an original artist and a pleasant, down to earth person. Well done.
Once into the final three rounds it stopped being AGT and became The Grace VanderWaal Show. She closed the show for the quarter finals and the finals, and arguably saved their season after the Olympic break. Running the table with four original songs she set the bar impossibly high and we'll probably never see that feat repeated. She broke AGT and they've been trying since to capture that lightning in a bottle. But they haven't been able to duplicate the genesis of Grace VanderWaal.
Not completely fair, Darci Lynne and Shin Lim both generated a ton of interest, but you’re totally right about the experience level . She was a complete novice and the almost everyone else( talented) had orders of magnitude more experience. On her season alone BJC had been on Broadway for 10 years, the opera singer had been performing for years and actually won another country’s “got talent”, Tapeface is an international superstar, so were the illusionists. What I find interesting is watching people's "React" videos to hearing Grace Vanderwaal, because there is a common thread in all of them. They sense her genuine raw talent that hasnt been spoiled by the industry. And she does have a talent to make one feel like there is hope for people; that there are things that can make you smile from within.👍

After I heard her first performance, I told anyone, and everyone, that she was going to win, and go on to be a force in the industry Her songwriting and lyrics are extraordinary for any artist, let alone someone her age. She is insightful beyond her years. To top out off, she seems to be a genuinely caring person. I hope the industry doesn't destroy her.

I believe it was Simon who asked her if she thought she could win. And she said something like "Miracles can happen and it's possible". Fell for her immediately. Wow
The start of the journey with Grace should always start here. Her mother signed her up for the show, thought it would be fun to people watch and give her a bigger stage to perform. She had no idea she would win, or even thought of the response she would get. Over the last four years Grace has become one of the most talented lyrical artists. So glad you reacted to these! Her lyrics are relatable to any age for at least 3 songs. She literally has fans from 8 to 80. Yes, she wrote Beautiful Thing for her sister, but she performed it online (a minute after finishing it, from her bedroom) and intro-ed it saying it was written for someone specifically, but I'm not saying, I want you to let it apply to yourself. So wise! Take another listen, and appreciate her dynamics, especially at the end when she goes suddenly soft. In that and her first, did you notice she takes unpredictable directions of timing and dynamics? So unexpected for a 12 year old, has confidence in her own style. Will mix genres in any song. Yes, she won. With four original compositions, the last two written in just two plus weeks. A song about personal identity and one's place in society, I Don't Know My Name; a song about her relationship with her sister Olivia, Beautiful Thing; a song about sheer happiness and joy, Light The Sky; and a song about bullying, Clay. The lighting and stage blocking for the last two were her concepts, and she had to fight the producers to do Clay - they wanted her to reprise I Don't Know My Name. Yes, the million-dollar prize is an annuity that pays $25,000 a year for 40 years - or you can take the lump sum that would purchase the annuity. The best estimate I've seen is that it was between $360,000 and $385,000 that year, and she went that route. There are two videos that showcase Grace the person; watch them in this order: ruclips.net/video/QbHMs0BhwoQ/видео.html and her performance and acceptance speech at the Billboard 2017 Women In Music Awards where she received the Rising Star award at age 13: ruclips.net/video/VQODLWSiyys/видео.html - reaction optional. The first is from PassItOn.org about confidence. Grace has _always_ promoted tolerance, acceptance, self-acceptance, and self-improvement. Lovely reaction - and you've got a cute daughter!
This popped up on my Facebook page the day after her audition aired (I never watched the show) and I fell in love with her from that moment on. All her AGT performances were originals (highly not recommended) they all all appeared on her perfectly titled EP, Perfectly Imperfect and her first LP Just the Beginning shows how good she is. She, nevertheless, comes across as a kid.. She's brilliant.
As late as this comment is. What a risk Grace took. Each song was an original. Each song moved her forward in the show. Then in the final she didn't even play safe and play her audition song, she played a new song. I call that confidence. And brilliance.
If I'm having a bad day or I have half an hour to kill I always come to these performances, nothing makes time fly and leaves me with a smile on my face quite like this does.
Grace has dozens of performances online. They range from twelve to sixteen years old. Her style definitely evolves. You should check a few out. Your reactions are great.
I'm a ridiculous, obsessed Grace fan. I am so impressed by your candor as well as your relaxed inclusion of your children's visits. Professional and real at the same time!
I love that you went back to the start - she's a find. All original songs,... she's still writing beautiful stuff. Her recent LP Letters Vol.1 will show you how far she she has evolved as a performer. Yes she won. Yes we are all addicted to Grace's voice 'crack' too (lol) ** And your daughter is ADORABLE!
Grace's first CD was called "Perfectly Imperfect," and it had five songs on it. The first four songs were performed on AGT. "Gossip Girl" wasn't. I think her sister did the art work for the CD's cover.
She won, and collapsed in a puddle of tears. Here's the moment captured on video: ruclips.net/video/5wPIsBaYP6c/видео.html (second place was a mentalist act) RUclips now has hundreds of covers of I Don't Know My Name. Grace wrote Beautiful Thing for her sister, Olivia. (With the blue hair) It has become a popular song at weddings. Light the Sky was used as the background for Google's Year in Search 2016, a wonderful message of hope. ruclips.net/video/KIViy7L_lo8/видео.html Clay is Grace's answer to bullying in school, and it still makes my eyes leak wishing we'd had that song 50 years ago. BTW that's an Ingrid Michaelson song playing under the Golden Buzzer moment, an Grace joined Ingrid last year for a duet on her Christmas album.
Grace has signature voice cracks and she can crack on key. It is a little less pronounced in her newer songs. And speaking of Ingrid Michaelson, it was her song "Keep Breathing" that played when Grace got the Golden Buzzer and Grace has now done several co-labs with Ingrid. Here they are last Christmas at Disney - ruclips.net/video/A2ntOhQE2eY/видео.html
I like Grace for her originality. She has a natural Indie edge. Her ukulele is a signature trade mark for sure. In fact Fender Guitars made her a signature model ukulele. Your daughter was cute and i can see both her Mom and Dad in her.. Great reaction video.
"Beautiful Thing" she wrote about her sister was used for the award winning Windex ad "The story of Lucy". Watch it with Kleenex handy. Miss Grace is an old soul. Welcome to her world. She's only getting started.
Cool reaction, thanks!! Whoever suggested (made) this video blew it. You should have been able to view the intro before the first song, as well as awards ceremony when Grace won. All the songs are originals, written by Grace at age 12. I assume you know all this by now. BTW they have the option to take an immediate cash payout of about $325K instead of the 40 year annuity of $1M.
A shy 12 year old who sings all the auditions using music and lyrics she wrote. You can see her confidence build in each audition. Windex used her 2nd audition song for a very pointed heartfelt commercial. Years later Grace remains humble although no longer shy.
I'd recommend listening to her current songs. She's 16 and alot of these songs she doesn't even like singing anymore because she has grown out of them. She still like to do IDKMName because her audience likes that memory of discovering her, and the same for Grace because it launched her career.
Yes your daughter is a beauty, she is definitely her mother’s daughter!!this is another one who is destined for a great future, I nearly love her as much as Angelina.
First of all - your daughter is a mini Maunalee - so cute and you're always spot on with your reactions (at least in my opinion lol). As soon as Grace sang her first notes on AGT, I knew there was something special. The unique style, the uke, and her song writing abilities - amazing. Now she's in a Disney movie and she was pretty good in it. (During this pandemic, I'm watching everything haha) It's crazy seeing this young talent, especially the dynamic trio, Darci Lynne, Grace and the unbelievable Angelina. And they all seemed to be grounded and have good families. I hope they don't sell out and keep doing what they do best. Btw - Grace lives in my area.
I agree with everything you said except the "pretty good" remark. Stargirl is difficult role for an experienced actor to pull off, much less someone who never acted before. Remember she beat out 700 girls who had auditioned for the part.
Just rewatched 😀- I recall Grace was invited to come back to AGT the next season to perform her then new song Moonlight - check it out (Grace would have been 13). 🙏
If you want to see the range of her current style and ability, you should watch "Today and Tomorrow-live on Jimmy Kimmel and then her music video for "I don't like you"
It was funny watching you at the end going.. "Did she win!?" You should have felt what it was like watching the whole thing unfold in real time! I was lucky enough to stumble upon her audition (I Don't Know my Name) just after it happened. The suspense was very intense! I think there was a month or two between the auditions and the actual competition so in the mean time I must have watched her audition a hundred times. Each time I watched it sunk in a little deeper just how incredible that song and performance and Grace herself really was. She had no clue how good she was... Didn't even think she'd pass the audition! Meanwhile her very first song out of the gate written at 12 years old was going viral with people all over the world doing covers and the video of her audition was getting millions of views. Her songwriting is absolutely astounding coming from a 12 year old, but it's not just her lyrics... Her innate sense of arrangement and song structure is like that of someone who's been doing it for at least a decade or two but she'd just started writing less than a year before AGT! I believe "I Don't Know my Name" was one of the first songs she ever wrote! WOW!!!
All originals and she won! Cute little girl, looks like your own Betty Page Mini-me! Glad you have had Grace grow on you since the rooftop 'Darkness' performance and others; she is so very prolific its like some songs are great as far as each fan goes; and others have their own playlists. Your comments on her voice is spot on and consistent regardless of the song it's applied to. 'Old Soul' had ben mentioned several times by other Grace reactors, as her lyrics bear out messages much older folks (yes me) can identify with, partly I believe because what she had not been thru yet, she has seen happen with others. Her intelligence is certainly high, thus showing her imagination to gather insights others have to live thru to truly understand. Keep it up with your reactions Mauna, I always check in with you and the fineky 8 ball (Yup, had one too; didn't everyone?!) when checking on the few great reactors who have been in the music scene for years as you have, that will actually give a good critique and thumbs up or down opinion!
I think Grace has made more money since she won AGT. She has had two sold out concert tours of her own,and she opened in, I think, 40 cites for Imagine Dragons. Then there are her two CDs and the 1st part of her 3rd that was released recently. She is so popular in Japan that she'd been there a couple of times to perform for her fans there.
If you want to hear what Grace is doing these days, her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel is outstanding. Today and Tomorrow: ruclips.net/video/DEGlLk5j4u8/видео.html Thirteen (cover) ruclips.net/video/1OSd724L94k/видео.html
Yes during AGT she interpreted only originals. Also what you said about her voice its on point precisely why its perfect, perfectly imperfect, like Simon said "your voice is a bit croaky some notes might not be quite right, but thats what makes it perfect". Also i think you'd love her cover of "the a team" from Ed Sheeran at Paste studios NY (i think you wont have copyright isues with that one) ruclips.net/video/IBuGSEhlp7E/видео.html
Yes the prize is a 40 year annuity @ $25k per year, or they can choose to take the present cash value of the annuity that will vary due to interest rates - somewhere around $525k give or take - after taxes say $365k. The Vegas show is only three nights, four if the others sell out. Interestingly the cash prize for the AGT Champions version is only $25k on top of what ever performance fee they negotiated. Grace has made more money on her recordings, streaming, Movie, and Fender deal combined than she did from AGT
I once watched an outdoor concert she did. It was hot, in Texas. She stopped her concert, and told people to get water for those watching her show. FYI, the one with blue hair at her audition is her sister
As everyone has said, Grace won with originals, but they all had to be cut to fit the AGT song time limit. It is worth it to hear the full length versions. Also, AGT usually gets contestants to repeat a slightly longer version of their "audition" for the final. Grace didn't.
Yes , they are all her original songs and yes she won . You should react to some more of her music videos they're pretty cool . and by the way your daughter is adorable , when she smiles I just melted .
She WON. She wrote all of those songs, the last two during the show's run between the quarter final and the finale. She has written all of her recorded songs, with the exception of one, "Clearly," which is a new version of the original, written by a couple of people, who have worked with her.
She opened for Imagine Dragons last year and starred in Stargirl on Disney+ if you want to hear what she's doing lately listen to Today and Tomorrow from the Jimmy Kimmel show.
Great reaction,It does'nt look like you check out the comments on your video's but if you do I would suggest you do more Grace. She is so much more then some of the young cover artist that you do(Angelina Jordan to name one you seem to do alot of) Grace writes all her songs with not a bad one yet,If you like cover artist she can do that also better then most and makes them all her own

Now that you have heard just a very few of her songs, and have a handle on her songs, you should again listen to the first one you heard, and really listen to the words and what they have too say. Grace writes on more than one level in her songs.
Do yourself a favor and listen to "Stray" Live at the Slipper Room. Actually it might be a better idea to follow her chronologically and watch her grow and develop musically, but that performance is really something special. In fact I think I'll put it on right now, C ya later
Don't pass on Grace covers, she never sing them like "covers" it almost always sound like new song, good examples are "River" , "Look what you made me do"" "In my blood" or "A Team" "One and Only"it really show how talented she is.I guarantee you will be surprise
Beautiful Thing was written by Grace for her sister Olivia who you saw when she got the golden buzzer. This song has been use in a Windex commercial, and used by many couple for their first wedding dance. It is one of a few songs now that Grace has written about love without using the word. The latest one is Today and Tomorrow that Grace wrote when filming Stargirl, and the director saw it and loved it, this now is my favorite song of hers so far. This is one you really should react too, you will be happy as hell if you do. It’s perfectly Imperfect! And yes she won!
She sang nothing but originals during her time on AGT.
And nobody else has ever done that before.
@@schuhschrank947 Not that I know of, I'm pretty sure it is a first.
@@Paul-D-Hoff And I don't know of anybody who has done that afterwards - not all the way through to the finals!
Great reactions , yup these are all originals , she did win in 2016
Grace + Maunalee + Smiling daughter = Made My Entire "Stay at Home" Day! Thank you!
She won it.She was 2016 AGT.All her performance on AGT is her original composition
self taught in playing ukulele, self taught in songwriting, she dont play by the rules she makes them =)
I'm a ridiculous, obsessed Grace fan. I am so impressed by your candor as well as your relaxed inclusion of your children's visits. Professional and real at the same time!
One major thing about this little sweetheart is she writes her music
I love that you went back to the start - she's a find. All original songs,... she's still writing beautiful stuff. Her recent LP Letters Vol.1 will show you how far she she has evolved as a performer. Yes she won. Yes we are all addicted to Grace's voice 'crack' too (lol) ** And your daughter is ADORABLE!
Grace's first CD was called "Perfectly Imperfect," and it had five songs on it. The first four songs were performed on AGT. "Gossip Girl" wasn't. I think her sister did the art work for the CD's cover.
She won!
yassss she won AMAZING GRACE!
I believe she is the only person who has ever gone through the show completely with original songs, and she won!
She won, and collapsed in a puddle of tears. Here's the moment captured on video:

(second place was a mentalist act)
RUclips now has hundreds of covers of I Don't Know My Name.
Grace wrote Beautiful Thing for her sister, Olivia. (With the blue hair) It has become a popular song at weddings.
Light the Sky was used as the background for Google's Year in Search 2016, a wonderful message of hope.

Clay is Grace's answer to bullying in school, and it still makes my eyes leak wishing we'd had that song 50 years ago.
Thank you I appreciate your reaction I had to chuckle she actually did a duet with Ingrid Michaelson singing Rocking around the Christmas tree
YES! SHE WON!!! Her first film should have already been released on Disney+. It's titled "STARGIRL".
She won!! The rest is history!!!!
Grace Vanderwaal is making her film debut in “StarGirl” on Disney+!!
I'd recommend listening to her current songs. She's 16 and alot of these songs she doesn't even like singing anymore because she has grown out of them. She still like to do IDKMName because her audience likes that memory of discovering her, and the same for Grace because it launched her career.
12 year old musical genius and is headed for the stars - just a matter of time. writes and sings her own music and now she produces it too.
SHE'S a leading roll in STAR GIRL
Just rewatched 😀- I recall Grace was invited to come back to AGT the next season to perform her then new song Moonlight - check it out (Grace would have been 13). 🙏
If you want to see the range of her current style and ability, you should watch "Today and Tomorrow-live on Jimmy Kimmel and then her music video for "I don't like you"
I love grace vanderwall . I'm glad you watched her agt performances
Perfectly imperfect. All originals.. 12 years old. Amazing. Simon Cowell said it perfectly....This girl is special.
They tried to make her sing covers I believe and she said no...if she did not do it her way anad lost then she would regret if forever.
She cut a track with Ingrid Michaelson a couple Christmases ago
Glad you have had Grace grow on you since the rooftop 'Darkness' performance and others; she is so very prolific its like some songs are great as far as each fan goes; and
others have their own playlists.
She sings an xmas song with Ingrid last winter.
Btw she's in a Disney movie. Stargirl released in March. Your little one would enjoy it, I think.
Let's call her a songwriter/singer. Her songs are amazing. I can easily see her writing songs for others.
Contraire Pierre. She is equally a great singer as she is a songwriter. The proof is in her covers. Let's just call her Grace.
If you want to hear what Grace is doing these days, her recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel is outstanding.

Fender is making a ukulele with her name on it. Grace is the youngest that they have made any signature anything for.
Actually Grace had a say in the design. Not surprising, as she now won't allow one of her songs to be produced without her input.
She is, of course, cute but a 12 year old with this voice and songwriting ability transcends cuteness. I honestly think she's a genius.
Yes during AGT she interpreted only originals. Also what you said about her voice its on point precisely why its perfect, perfectly imperfect, like Simon said "your voice is a bit croaky some notes might not be quite right, but thats what makes it perfect".
Also i think you'd love her cover of "the a team" from Ed Sheeran at Paste studios NY (i think you wont have copyright isues with that one)

ACL Austin City Limits festival, I believe she was the youngest performer to be invited at the time😁😎
I think her best performance is the MTV Push version of the song River.
She won a Europe MTV award for her MTV Push performance that includes the cover of "river" by Leon Bridges , definitely one of her best
@@thawk6792 I didn't know that! Makes sense because it's such a gorgeous cover.
She actually assisted with clearly she wrote the amazing bridge
She opened for Imagine Dragons last year and starred in Stargirl on Disney+ if you want to hear what she's doing lately listen to Today and Tomorrow from the Jimmy Kimmel show.
Your mini-me is adorable! 99% of everything you hear from Grace is hers.
That is not to say that you should ignore her covers. She makes the covers her own often out-performing the originals.
Great reaction,It does'nt look like you check out the comments on your video's but if you do I would suggest you do more Grace. She is so much more then some of the young cover artist that you do(Angelina Jordan to name one you seem to do alot of) Grace writes all her songs with not a bad one yet,If you like cover artist she can do that also better then most and makes them all her own
OMG your daughter is adorable and a mini you! She was watching so intently.
One thing you should keep in mind is the fact she wrote all her own music and songs. At age 12
Birth of a star girl. " Light The Sky " The song was Google Song:
Year In Search 2016. I like this girl.
I had no idea what you were talking about. But I tried it. Sure enough, it was there. Good one.

Now that you have heard just a very few of her songs, and have a handle on her songs, you should again listen to the first one you heard, and really listen to the words and what they have too say. Grace writes on more than one level in her songs.
Nice reaction- check out Grace’s recent live performance of Today and Tomorrow on Jimmy Kimmel Show- very moving performance.
She did win
Do yourself a favor and listen to "Stray" Live at the Slipper Room. Actually it might be a better idea to follow her chronologically and watch her grow and develop musically, but that performance is really something special. In fact I think I'll put it on right now, C ya later
Don't pass on Grace covers, she never sing them like "covers" it almost always sound like new song, good examples are "River" , "Look what you made me do"" "In my blood" or "A Team" "One and Only"it really show how talented she is.I guarantee you will be surprise

They are all originals written during the show or when she was 11.
"Today and Tomorrow", another love song of hers without the use of love, and it is used in the credits of Stargirl and if you ever see the movie you will know why it was.
