Jani if you can hear me from beyond I hope you found peace. And don't worry, the song may be embarrassing to you but it brought a lot of joy to a lot of people.
I honestly think it wasn't just the song that he hated but the circumstances behind it. He said the label didn't "hear the single" when they listened to the album, so Jani wrote "Cherry Pie" and the rest is history. In other words, their finished album meant nothing to the label until "Cherry Pie" came into the picture and that's what he became known for and it really didn't help that the album was released at the end of the Glam era and the fact that come September of the following year, Nirvana and Grunge would take over MTV.
I liked the song, but I feel so bad for what he was put through by people because of it. The lyrics and video are still funny. But bed of roses, blind faith, uncle Tom's cabin, you're the only hell your mama ever raised. If you can't hear the art in those songs, then you're a fkn idiot.
I agree with you, I liked that song in High school and I wish Jani was still with us. Everything doesn't have to be so serious, you can have fun songs too. There is room for everything.
This is why music sucks now. Because of idiots like yourself not understanding that songs like this come from your coporate masters, not from anyone's soul.

I can see where Jani is coming from. Nonsense. The label just wanted an anthem type of song. Gene and Paul don't cry about "Rock And Roll All Nite". Nobody made him write "Cherry Pie". If the label had brought the song in from a third party songwriter and forced the band to record it, that would have been different. They didn't. Jani wrote it. He has to live with it. Well, you know what I mean...

@Mister Robato sure, it wasn't some life or death situation. By that logic, no one is forced to do anything. Nobody has to work. Fuck it. Be out on your ass and dead broke. This is heartbreaking to watch. Jani was a talented kid who let fame and subsequent demise from fame ultimately destroy him. So sad. Warrant had some great songs too.

Funny how Jani could basically pump out songs at will...wow that is talent! I always liked the song but can understand how he was trying to write deeper songs like I saw Red.

i luved that song Cherry Pie jani Lane ws a totally awesome singer and his group just totally rocked. Yeah when he died a piece of rock and roll died with him. He will be missed forever by me!!!
Say what you will about hair metal bands like Warrant and others, but if that's true what he said about writing that song in a day, that's talent. People are way too hard on hair bands. Everyone has to act as if a song doesn't change your life,it's not worth listening to...I hate that pretentious shit! Sometimes music is just supposed to be fun,and that's it.
Lisa Surlie, Wtf? I didn’t mention Tom Kiefer, just like I never mentioned Kurt Cobain, or Sebastian Bach. You did, just like *you* were the only one here who brought up Vince Meal. Put the effing drugs away, lady. Drug addicts are not interesting to anyone but other drug addicts.
That’s so sad. He gave so many people so much more joy than 99.9 % of the other people here ever did. Rip. I wish /hope he found it on this side of the dirt
@AbsolutRussell Yeah, it was. Cause you could see the pain in his face and voice. The fact is, he's right..he got a raw deal. You listen to other songs on that same album "Song and Dance Man", "Uncle Tom's Cabin", "Blind Faith", etc. and you knew this guy was a tremendous writer. Even their other "party anthems" (i.e. "Down Boys", "D.R.F.S.R.") had sharp lyrics about life on the other side. The guy was immensely talented, yet goes down as the "Cherry Pie guy"
He reminds me of Burt Reynolds when he said he wished he had done more movies like "Deliverance" instead of "Cannonball Run". He should be proud, it was good sounding, fun song, and that has a certain charm all its own.
Polarcupcheck The problem with the song was that it took over his entire life and he couldn't escape it. He was not allowed to evolve as a musician because society and his record label wanted another cherry pie.
I love that song. I wish he would have been able to hear from real fans instead of listening to all the BS that clowns said about him. He might still be alive if he knew that he was appreciated by many people.
When he said "I could shoot myself in the fucking head for writing that song" my heart sank. His voice, the look in his eyes, almost on the verge of tears...
to me, Jani wasn't the "cherry pie guy" all I knew by Warrant as a little kid was the song Heaven which I absolutely loved and still do. I never heard the song Cherry Pie until I saw this spot on VH1. and my first thought was "hey it's the band that does Heaven."
I think Uncle Tom's Cabin was better than Heaven. Heaven was the hair band ballad that went along with the formula record companies wanted along with Cherry Pie.
I too think Uncle Tom's Cabin was their best song. It's practically a masterpiece. Also Down Boys it's quite a powerful song if you actually listen to the lyrics, is like a statement against music critics and the music industry itself.
Yeah Janie, your the "Cherry Pie" guy - you wrote that song; but I just wished you realized you gave millions of people memories with that song. I can hear it and know EXACTLY where I was, who I was with, what I was doing and thinking. The song takes you back better than a time machine. R.I.P. Janie
I hope that Jani realised how awesome Dog Eat Dog was - hugely underrated album. Even if he didn't consider Cherry Pie to be worthy of much, Dog Eat Dog more than made up for it.
I keep coming back to this, Cherry Pie was a staple at The Hungry Years in Brighton, before Janie Laine died I had a funny feeling about him and went to metal Sludge to see what he was up to and news broke he had died - we don't do 'he passed' in England, i find it vile but its just semantics I don't know why but before looking him up I had a strong suspicion that he was dead and inevitably and horribly was not really surprised.. Anyway, he was a great singer, burned some bridges it seems but whatever, gave massive joy to an inordinate amount of people, so God Speed, wish Janie and his family every good grace x
Uncle Tom's Cabin is one of the best rock songs and I ever heard, and the story is so nice. Its cip is one of the best I've seen too. I think these recording industry execs are the worst kind of lime you would ever find in grease-land.
But come on! The song wasn’t as bad as he made it out to be. He’s acting like he was Billy Squire prancing around in a pink jumper and wrapping himself in satin sheets!
My favorite songs by any band were the ones that weren't played to death by FM radio and MTV. I liked them because they weren't as over-exposed as the singles were. Also, it saddens the hell out of me that Jani didn't get the help he needed to conquer his personal demons. I hope he's at peace now.
Its weird cause it tends to happen. There comes a point in which Cobain hated Teen Spirit, Plant hated Starway to Heaven or Dio hated Rainbow in the Dark.
This guy was great! Sux he's gone. Sad. My friend met him at a mall when they came to town. The hotel is on one end. Swank joint. Said Jani was super nice. Record co screwed him. Think of the music he had left to do.
Well I bought the record the day it came out ...ready for this 9/11 1990 ..and I heard 3 or 4 hits uncle Tom's cabin i saw red and blind faith for starters..cherry pie was a great song ..the band was heavy and melodic with great hooks and Steven Sweets drumming was hard n heavy ..they made sure it was not going to be a cupcake lol..great record!
I loved that song so much. I wanted to be that girl in the video back then. Pains me now, to know how much he despised that song. Not once did I ever think of him as the cherry pie guy.
My wife was a big Warrant fan, and I tell you, Warrant was one of the best bands that came out of that genre. The BEST Warrant albums were "D.R.F.S.R." "Uncle Toms Cabin." I.E Cherry Pie. and the BEST, OF ALL 3, was "Dog Eat Dog". Man what an album, it was heavy, some songs were deep, and heartfelt. R.I.P. Jani.

i luved that song Cherry Pie jani Lane ws a totally awesome singer and his group just totally rocked.
Eddie Vedder wrote the lyrics to every song on "Ten" in the course of one evening.
stfudaco I never heard that before. doesn't mean it's not true.
It's true.
Jani wrote it in under an hour, on a pizza box (some say “15 minutes” & “ sitting on the toilet”).
Still a cool song. Especially when it first come out. I was 12, RIP Jani
I was 16 when this song came out & it helped me through high school
If a silly song about the female anatomy helped you through High School, your problems were not very deep or complicated.
Song so good made a grown man cry,
Sweet cherry pie. 🍒
I saw red. A beautiful number
No Jani.
Your legacy is "Heaven".
One of the greatest love songs ever written.
The people who matter know that.
So now you can rest in peace.
One of my all time favorite interviews
@Lisa Surlie A nice lil parable about fame
R.I.P cherry pie guy:(
I love that song. I wish he would have been able to hear from real fans instead of listening to all the BS that clowns said about him. He might still be alive if he knew that he was appreciated by many people.
DRFSR was the first tape I ever bought. I slept with it, I was in love with jani and their music
Love song cherrie pie😍..from malaysia🤘
I heard that he passed and I immediately thought of this interview. :( Rest In Peace Jani Lane.
the song is an awsome 80s metal song .......you wrote a great song jani !!
When he said "I could shoot myself in the fucking head for writing that song" my heart sank. His voice, the look in his eyes, almost on the verge of tears...
Wow! would have never guessed.
UTC is a kicking tune, much respect.
Saw Warrant open for Poison. Great show, great band.
RIP JANI You will be sadly missed. You were an amazing song writer & lyricist. Hope you found Heaven...and finally @ peace with your soul.
Happy birthday sweet Jani Lane 😘
Uncle Tom's Cabin, Mr Rainmaker, and I Saw Red are the 3 best Warrant songs off, "Cherry Pie!"
to me, Jani wasn't the "cherry pie guy" all I knew by Warrant as a little kid was the song Heaven which I absolutely loved and still do. I never heard the song Cherry Pie until I saw this spot on VH1. and my first thought was "hey it's the band that does Heaven."
be proud of that song it kicked ass , don't say you hated that song
He's a genius for writing such a hit.
"Next i know im cherry pie guy.." Bro you to me you died a music legend
his best song was "Heaven" Still obsessed with it. he had great songs like "I Saw Red" and "Heaven"
I think Uncle Tom's Cabin was better than Heaven. Heaven was the hair band ballad that went along with the formula record companies wanted along with Cherry Pie.
+Tammy Sigmon My all time fav he sings is Sometimes She Cries.
I too think Uncle Tom's Cabin was their best song. It's practically a masterpiece. Also Down Boys it's quite a powerful song if you actually listen to the lyrics, is like a statement against music critics and the music industry itself.
..i think "big talk" and "down boys" are two of their best hits
@@kamillehobbs1126 Mine too
He's so missed & I Loved Cherry Pie & he did say not long before he died that he did like that song.. Swinging Love you Lani
Feels so good, make a grown man cry
It's a great song on It's own but Jani had the golden voice 🔥
Yeah Janie, your the "Cherry Pie" guy - you wrote that song; but I just wished you realized you gave millions of people memories with that song. I can hear it and know EXACTLY where I was, who I was with, what I was doing and thinking. The song takes you back better than a time machine.
R.I.P. Janie
That's a great point. Fall 1990 - I can clearly remember when my buddy handed over his walkman headphones and said "Check this song out"
I hope that Jani realised how awesome Dog Eat Dog was - hugely underrated album. Even if he didn't consider Cherry Pie to be worthy of much, Dog Eat Dog more than made up for it.
R.I.P.... And for the record, I'll always remember you for Heaven, not Cherry Pie.
I miss this guy. Rest in peace❤️
RIP - I hope you found whatever peace you were trying to find in this life.
It really did make a grown man cry...
🤣🤣 brutal!!
What a legend. Jani Lane i love you ❤
Uncle Tom's Cabin is one of the best rock songs and I ever heard, and the story is so nice. Its cip is one of the best I've seen too. I think these recording industry execs are the worst kind of lime you would ever find in grease-land.
Its despicable how many people in the comments think being famous is more important than actually being true to yourself
But come on! The song wasn’t as bad as he made it out to be. He’s acting like he was Billy Squire prancing around in a pink jumper and wrapping himself in satin sheets!
Uncle Tom's Cabin is a work of art... great song...
He’ll always be the Uncle Tom’s Cabin guy to me, I’m glad that was the first song of his I was exposed to. Rest In Peace Jani
*Possibly one of the most gut wrenching heart breaking brutally honest interviews ever given.*
May Jani RIP
My favorite songs by any band were the ones that weren't played to death by FM radio and MTV. I liked them because they weren't as over-exposed as the singles were. Also, it saddens the hell out of me that Jani didn't get the help he needed to conquer his personal demons. I hope he's at peace now.
that's nothing amazing lol. The point of the singles is to draw you in so you check out the rest of their music
In other words you're a hipster
Jani hated the song, but it became Warrant's signature song... weird.
Its weird cause it tends to happen. There comes a point in which Cobain hated Teen Spirit, Plant hated Starway to Heaven or Dio hated Rainbow in the Dark.
You were much more than that one song pal… RIP
Jani wrote ‘ I Saw Red ‘. Met him once. Cool guy. Dig that tune.
Joey Allen said on Eddie Trunk that Jani wrote “Cherry Pie” after hearing the song “All Lips and Hips” by Electric Boys. The influence is incredible.
I just listened to All Lips and No Hips, and it's very clear he ripped a lot of that song off when writing Cherry Pie. No doubt about it.
why i season my alcohol but not my cherry pie
That's a tl;dr of how I got here
Poor him:( you met your wife.from it and people enjoy your song . So positively came out.from it
R.I.P. Jani Lane.
Cherry pie eating contest? This is a sad story, but I died laughing at that part.
I loved that song so much. I wanted to be that girl in the video back then. Pains me now, to know how much he despised that song. Not once did I ever think of him as the cherry pie guy.
The record was done the record was called Uncle Toms Cabin
I feel rlly bad but honestly I fucking love the song and I’m 16. Gosh I was so born in the wrong decade
RIP Jani... This truely did you in!!!
I loved his voice
My wife was a big Warrant fan, and I tell you, Warrant was one of the best bands that came out of that genre. The BEST Warrant albums were "D.R.F.S.R." "Uncle Toms Cabin." I.E Cherry Pie. and the BEST, OF ALL 3, was "Dog Eat Dog". Man what an album, it was heavy, some songs were deep, and heartfelt. R.I.P. Jani.
