- Nurburgring 24 hour 2011. Mal Rose's Donut King V8 Commodore Supercar and Darren Turner in the factory Aston Martin GT4 V8 Vantage "smurf" complete one lap in close proximity. Damp but drying track, early in the race, and both cars lapping in the 9:30 to 9:40 range (equivalent to sub 7:50 Nordschleife time). Enjoy the sounds of the 6 litre torque monster versus the high revving 4.7 litre Aston sound-track.
love 2 see v8 supercars overseas! thank you
It's damp and they're on slicks. The popping you hear from the Commodore is the 3-foot long flames. Check Darren's commitment at 4:48 and his nonchalant "hey, wake up dude" gesture at 7:45 as he, a ring rookie, does a triple-stint from the start. Thanks for watching. Comments are welcome, but driving tips from Playstation heroes are not. Sabine, if you wish to comment - feel absolutely free! Feature film hopefully completed sometime... soon... ish....
Yes, I am also a race driver and have travelled with Mal Rose to the Ring 5 or 6 times. Also Dubai, Spa, etc. Most often it's to make TV shows about his exploits, or as crew. The onboard footage is an important part. Unfortunately this means I am too busy to actually drive the 24h event. Mal switched camps and drove THAT Aston in the 2012 event - to a best ever result of about 33rd outright. Speed of the two cars is very comparable, but the Aston is much easier to drive.
I never realised how fast that track actually is until I looked at it like this. Beautiful sound from the V8s, especially the Commodore not working quite so hard as the 5L homologation for V8Supercars.
Also don't forget that Mal is a Privateer. So an endless supply of parts and development time is not plentiful. Hes clearly driving the car concervatively. The driver of the Aston on the other hand had to use all of the car to catch the commodore, he also has the advantage of Aston factory support for parts etc. That car was part of a factory effort.
Built by Gary Rodgers, well known car in Aus, and previously driven by Bargwanna and/or Whincup. Mal could tell you the full history, but it started as a V8 Supercar and has been modified for enduro. Runs a big torque 6 litre, not 5 litre - motor built by GRM. So yeah - it was the real deal. Now improved.
@dl500b Correct. They are restricted to 5 litre, but this one complies to a different set of rules, for SP8 class. So Mal put one in that generates the same power, more torque, but doesn't have to rev and work the valve-gear as hard. A 5 litre Supercar engine would be hard-pressed to last the distance if using 7500rpm constantly.
I should point out that the in the 2012 race Mal returned without the Commodore and drove the orange Aston. And it had another year of refinements and had picked up some a bit more pace. In 2011, the Commodore was marginally quicker. But in 2012, with Peter Cate UK and Mal Rose AUS lapped the Aston faster than the Commodore had previously done. Other drivers were Rob Thomson AUS and Jurgen Stumpf GER (who sadly passed away just weeks after the event, in a hunting accident).
the Holden have at least 5% more grunt. it accelerates harder.
I think great fun and huge is maybe a bit of an understatement. It is the holy grail! Thank you for the info, alas I can rarely afford local track days. Although it is quite high on to do list!
I love this vid and love that the commodore had a faster best lap lol. Everyone has to remember its not a sprint race you need the machinery to finish the race.
Great Driving Guys :)
Great Work Stu :)
Great Place :)
Hi Roger. Couple of points. "Smurf" the Aston - so called because it was originally painted blue, is 1350kg dry. But the supercar is heavier. It has a lot of ancillary stuff for the 24h - a second big battery, oversize alternator for all the lights (permanently fitted to a second bonnet), extra bar-work, bigger mufflers, etc. Endurance is the key not weight. The motor is a full-on Supercar built by GRM (Mike Excel built). Stroker 6 litre. No way related to L98.
Great footage ,,Thanks Mate..
Is the Holden a real V8 Supercar? Or "just" build for the 24h of Nordschleife?
cheers
Oh, he's working hard. Couple of reasons why it looks cruisy. (1) 6 litre Chev motor can't tolerate constant big revs over 24 hours, so short-changing at 6500. (2) The guy driving is the guy who will have to fix it if it breaks (3) it's probably 300kg heavier than the Aston, so you can't dive-bomb under brakes and be quite so aggressive - you just have to respect all that extra mass. Makes change of direction a bit slower.
@IdoZatTimeInaVan I was proud to see some early 928s there (you 928 lover), but they're not eligible for the 24h and were confined to the historic "New Timers" or "Old Timers" races. Classics 70s and 80s colours too - poo brown, custard, sky blue. Yes, a plethora of 911s in the 24h. In the previous lap both these guys were ambushed by the super fast Cup S, RSR, M3GTR, R8V10 brigade.
These clips are in synch, by the way. A pedant may notice the satellite-based clocks are exactly an hour apart. Mal's car was set at German time, the Aston at GMT.
So race laps, especially in an endurance event are obviously going to be nowhere near a hotlap time, just out of curiosity though, what kind of times is the Commodore doing in full on hotlap mode? ( if one was done that is)
thanks for sharing that was cool.
thanx stu! the bars on supercar are quite heavy as i tried to lift them~they r heavy fiberglass...
I would do ANYTHING to run on the 'ring. especially in a V8 Supercar.. although I must say If I got that far and still had a choice, I'd go a Ford ;)
Fantastic vid thankyou.
Lots of companies there hiring out decent cars, right through the summer months Steg. A good way to start. If you want a Holden, it might have to be an Opel Astra, and a Ford - probably a Focus. Lots of little race cars to rent on the public days. It's worth the airfare, believe me. But if your budget is up to it, rent a GT3RS or something cheaper - a supercharged Lotus Exige (like I did this year). Great fun. Huge.
The Holden has over 600 horsepower and the Aston in the 400s range. Weight is similar, but the frontal area of the Holden is much bigger. Low gear and midrange urge in the Holden is indeed stronger, but it hits a bit of a brick wall over 260kph because of poorer aero.
I know it's confusing, but it was intentional for this clip. If you know the circuit, you'll figure out that the Aston gradually catches and passes the Commodore. I could have done one, then the other, but I want people to see the difference between a high-revving 4.3 V8 and a low-revving 6.0 V8 at the same points on the track. Confused?
Where is this "The north loop" film? :)
Sorry about the long wait for a reply. Still working on it - when time permits. Hopefully July or Aug this year. Sorry about the looooong wait...
Great video. Nice sound out of the Aston. I think they must have been pushing 280 kmh at the end of the video. What is the name of that fast straight?
Nice one Yoshicat. I allowed your comment as it says more about you than him. 1) go any harder and it wouldn't last. 2) Dunnydore push an RSR? No chance.True he's 50 but not a grandpah yet. So how many championships have you won? More than the old grandpah? Was it you that was rookie of the year in F/Ford, beating no-hopers like Bright, Bargwana and Webber? Was it you I saw on the podium at Bathurst '98 as first privateer - doing all the prep. yourself? Maybe YOU won the Amscar series?
In the description you list the Commo as having a 6 litre engine, but aren't the V8 Supercars restricted to a Chev 5L?
Do you have anything to do with the teeam going over there?
And Mal and his small crew can fix SOME things. If it runs hot or loses oil pressure (as it did in 2011), he just has to park it. But "little" things he can probably fix - broken valve springs, etc. He has a good but small volunteer crew (including one 888 guy, on loan). And a spare motor in the container, but would probably only use the second motor if they had to switch after practice or qual, or if very early in the race. Otherwise - too hard.
voice from australia, mate. 1. the v8 supercars have proper racing engines from chev, not the civil l98 6L engine. the engine itself costs $130,000 AUD. 2. a v8 supercar need a whole big team to support, cant believe the driver has to fix it. 3. the v8 supercar weights 1300KG without the driver. the aston weights 1000kg only? superb if it's ture.
Unfortunately.. shelved for the moment. Various reasons. Raw footage just sitting largely unedited, overtaken by other projects. Hopefully I'll revisit it when time permits. In years to come it might be a nice historical look. The race is changing so fast.. Sorry to disappoint. But if you want to see some fabulous Nurburgring stuff, check out StereoScreen "Chasing the Dream" or anything by Tim Hahne. RUclips or Vimeo.
@grumpystu cheers for the info
good footage but totally incoherant....jumping from one car to the other
No there weren't. There were a bunch of 996 GT3 RS cars, none of which qualified any better than a 2:20 in 2003. (2:24 in 2002 as I remember was the best Porsche qual. time - D.Brabham). And Nathan Pretty : 2:17. Uwe Alzen commented to me that if he knew before it was "anything goes" with the capacity rules he would have brought a "fast" car. Namely "The Alien" his monstrous twin turbo. But these are all very soft times by today's standards. Note: that 427 did it easy - upshifting at 5500rpm!
@lonewolf74 @lonewolf74 Well depending what country you're in, you will need your country's local international-flavour racing licence. The link is adac.24h-rennen.de for entries and rules. But it's got a lot hard for newbies, the major hurdle being that you need to have completed 3 x VLN (German touring car) races at the Nurburgring first, and their compulsory training ($). Basically - you have to be an experienced international enduro driver. Ten years ago it wasn't so hard!
6L RACING ENGINE...this explains my question lol...
@grumpystu p.s. Another Playstation hero. You try it.
then what about the performance of Holden 427's in the 24hrs of bathurst , there was 2 factory spec Porsche RSR's in that race ! including many other euro GT cars, It was'nt even a full factory effort (GRM) , ( un like every factory preped RSR's) See what you can acheive with current talented drivers in a serious/ quality / car effort ! Can Mal Rose whip me in a car race tomorrow of course , If i had had his track time / race opportunity / race milelage , then only God know's ? ,
@lfcjann Yep, some fat bint (actually not the right term, the etymology of bint is actually female ) in an ancient Oz car who happens to end up lapping faster than the Aston. Fat bints rule OK.
what sort of licence do you require to partake in the nurburgrung 24 ?
i assume there's an entrant's fee ?
can you provide details or an link to the information ?
cheers
And I'd be careful about the claim that if you had the same track time and experience as X,Y or Z, you think you might match them. A lot of people think that. I spend a lot of time teaching people, and with Mal in my mirrors, and him with me in his mirrors. I'd be betting against me. And against you Yoshi old son. That's why he did so well in categories where you couldn't buy your way into better kit. Laser series against Skaife, F/Ford, production cars, etc. God only knows? I don't think so.
because he does'nt have the talent to drive fast ( MAL ROSE ) , why can't they put a decent V8supercar driver who actually knows how to push one of these things , it could push a GT3 RSR to its limit , instead of an old slow racing grandpah !
